What does Python profets think about this code?
It didn't receive a lot of upvotes so I'm doubt..

Are the spammers gone or not?
I'm confused now.
One of them mentioned me in an answer that was deleted:
> "Nathan Osman believe us if we say you opened our eyes. We aren't interested anymore on doing what we did, nor are we interested on a DDoS attack."
What am I to make of this?
@NathanOsman no - not gone ... just slowing down. sounds like they are getting fed up
I can't quite figure out if my letter made a difference or not.
Either way, I'm fed up too. If they'd just behave, they could post on Meta with their concerns.
they read it - but the latest spam that I've dealt with in the last hour still shows no constructive engagement :/
anyway - bed time for me. night all.
@Lucio better you read the linked questions at the top... that was his main objeticve ;)

Q: Should the bar be higher to create tags...?

BraiamSirs, we have 2772 tags (9*4*77) and pretty much of them are kind of vague, doesn't define a particular topic, or the topic they define has nothing to do with Ubuntu. I've destroyed twice an attempt to create a [ubuntu-13.10] tag (BTW, the question was pretty generic, not even hw related) and the...

heh, @EliahKagan is the one with the largest character count average on answers in AU :P
@Braiam You don't know data.SE to know that, just with a couple of months in the site is enough..
@hbdgaf hell if I know, all I know is I hate Wubi with a passion.
@NathanOsman wowza
@NathanOsman I am having trouble with the internet.
Maybe I should try using a version before social networking and chat.
@fossfreedom duplicate of the same question by the same OP: askubuntu.com/questions/350305/…. Can the two questions be merged?
so I started playing with the appindicator lib and all i can say is meh
there's no reason i should have to call new instead of subclassing an indicator and calling super init
03:47
?
what I'm getting at is prettifying Jono's code, I get something like this:
#!/usr/bin/env python

from gi.repository import Gtk
from gi.repository import AppIndicator3 as appindicator

def menuitem_response(w, buf):
    print buf

'''
This should be called menuItems or something, not indicatorWidget...
but since a true indicatorwidget sub-classable isn't exposed, this is
the ugly we get.
'''

class indicatorWidget(Gtk.Menu):
    def __init__(self):
      Gtk.Menu.__init__(self)
          for i in range(3):
              buf = "Test-undermenu - %d" % i

              menu_items = Gtk.MenuItem(buf)
intresting
it reads better... but it's like trying to perform brain surgery with chopsticks. it's ugly.
my indentation is wrong still, but you get the point... i think
still wish it was a built-in thing, where just one major desktop does things totally diffrent
me too
if appindicator was ready for production, there would be a subclassable indicator widget so you could just say:
indicator_menus = indicatorWidget()
my_indicator = appindicator.indicator(indicator_menus)
Gtk.main()
wouldn't that be pretty pythonic code? i think so
04:05
yeah, the import this statment

Q: How can I view a comment for a deleted answer?

vasa1I had posted a comment to an answer to this question. From my inbox, I can see that there was a response but now that answer and all associated comments including the response to my comment aren't visible. And the bit in my inbox is truncated: I understand that certain measures are being used ...

@hbdgaf might add while jumping on a sole foot ;)
you know what i was trying to say.
@Braiam you're 10k+ right?
on AU? yes
If the problem in the linked but deleted answer is contact, why don't the super-elite browser automators that are spamming the site just answer one question with 2 upvotes so they have voice in chat? — hbdgaf 1 min ago
04:18
I saw that.
take a look at that and see if you think i was out of line...
@NathanOsman good, bad, ugly?
@hbdgaf lets just say "constructive" ;)
@hbdgaf Seems fine to me.
not everything is white/black...
i thought it was spot on, just wanted to make sure i wasn't viewing with a slant.

ATI has two versions of Linux drivers now: The old one, 3.12, which came out in December, and the new one, 3.11, which is actually the beta driver that came out this month. support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Linux+x86
Roland was willing to grant them access to a room where they could vent their frustrations.
he actually gave them voice... I think he rejects it...
really? is the room open? what were they actually railing against?
hm, what about the custom fallback section on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopExperienceTeam/ApplicationIndicators#Python%20version
"Some applications may wish to handle the callback slightly differently than this. In that case the fallback functions are provided in the class structure so that they can be subclassed and overridden."
@Mateo a quick read indicates that's not what i'm looking for, but i could be wrong.
04:25
still sounds like they want the appindicator to be used primarily :(
if they want people to use it, they should build better stuff.
> We propose to migrate the different applets to using simple menus. This change should provide a more consistent interface and be an important step to improve the user experience with the right hand side of the panel.
i understand the ux part of it. i'm talking about the programming part of it
oh, then I misunderstood
@Braiam yeah, so there aren't menus with right and left click stuff and crazy animated gif different styled stuff going on :)
04:29
trading ux for ugly code is not a good trade.
btw, I think he's more a C guy than python, after seeing his C/C++/Vala examples...
here's how i think it should read:

better looking code

wait, where the heck was that conversation... I had a blackout somewhere
just that in this case hbdgaf is writing a "simple indicator" with only one menu. and the status icon is built-in and simple (but dosn't work in unity)
it works in xfce as a regular pygi indicator, but unity borks because it needs to use appindicator. appindicator is ugly to use.
04:33
and kde, haven't tried gnome yet
so the concensus is everywhere tested except unity right?
@Mateo if you need testing in gnome3 I can
that would be awesome
so, who I have to "silence"?
@Braiam ?
04:36
:/ ?
@Braiam well if you want here is the expermiental branch(it has the pretty icon): github.com/mateosalta/CamCastic-Desktop/tree/experimental
I think there were some dependencies needed what ubuntu version @Braiam
i would have thought works everywhere but unity would be a valid complaint that didn't result in use a library that ends up with ugly code... if i have to use another library, i just think it should be well formed.
@Mateo debian ;)
if it runs pygi on python3 with gstreamer 1.0 it should be fine.
you show a small house icon right?
has any action?
04:41
yes, just a stock icon with a small sub-menu on right click
yep, it works, but looks weird without decoration
@Braiam the menu?
everything works
on the config window? that's a different thing.
@Mateo ^
04:42
oh, yeah...
well, everything works as expected (counting the fact that I have no webcam)
python3 CamCastic.py
in get_xid
on_error(): (GError("Cannot identify device '/dev/video0'.",), 'v4l2_calls.c(560): gst_v4l2_open (): /GstPipeline:pipeline0/GstV4l2Src:v4l2src0:\nsystem error: No such file or directory')
In keypress
that's fine for now.
yep "ahhhhh, no camera" < code translation
the issue at hand is the appindicator dependency to support unity. it seems to work everywhere but unity.
05:03
@hbdgaf well I can still "whitelist" it on 12.04
Great.. I've got all these pings I've got to find and reply too...
@NathanOsman No, I don't get a popup unless I'm in the room, or you use the "invite" option.

A carbon copy is the under-copy of a document created when carbon paper is placed between the original and the under-copy during the production of a document. With the advent of email, the abbreviation cc or bcc (blind carbon copy) has also come to refer to simultaneously sending copies of an electronic message to secondary recipients. Use A sheet of carbon paper is placed between two sheets of paper and the pressure applied by the writing implement (pen, pencil, typewriter or impact printer) to the top sheet causes pigment from the carbon paper to make a similar mark on the copy. @Braiam No I did not. I don't think it's a libnotify problem, I'm pretty sure it's a Ubuntu/Debian thing, since the necessary settings exist, they just don't work. I could be doing it wrong as well. I'm thinking of asking an SO question about it. The funny thing is that notify-send works just fine with a delay..
@Braiam oh, looks like I didn't size the icon down yet :)
also I think that code is going to change when it is packaged
so not mission critical just yet... just like seeing it when testing :)
05:21
@Seth I don't think you can invite to private rooms.
@NathanOsman I can invite mods (I've ever only tried it on mods..)
And I can invite Mateo..
but not hbdgaf
so yeah.
05:39
so it brings up the menu on right click instead of left like the others, and is not themed the same

@AvinashRaj ?

@oli the indian spammers are back.
askubuntu.com/a/404305/10698 flagged it, everyone should flag this answer so that the site starts to auto delete them...
@AvinashRaj did you flag it?
flag it and move on

@Braiam superb.Does it works?
@vasa1 it's not up to AU, that's an SE decision.
@Alvar, but otherwise this is how they're going to keep busy.
@vasa1 who?
12:49
@Alvar, the spammers. They'll just move from questions to answers and comments.
@vasa1 well, that's why we flag them. so that the site will start to auto nuke them...

ya fedora i didn't see that
spammer
who?
13:34
nate dogg
best thing to do is just flag it..
Already flagged.
@Braiam i don't see the harm in leaving that as duplicate. a broken boot-loader is a broken boot-loader. given that fedora is OT, it's still more helpful to say "here's how we do it" than "we hate fedora"
also, redhat is supposed to be starting to help maintain CentOS \o/. maybe the rpm based free distro will have less package-lag now.
@hbdgaf err... can you install boot-repair in a fedora live cd?
boot repair is a very ubuntu-ish package, and we are not saying "we hate fedora" we are saying "here is where fedora gets support"
I don't know. I only use debian derived. I just don't see where it's more helpful to point them somewhere else instead of saying - "Use an Ubuntu ISO. We do it right."
13:43
Ah! Came back after 5 days

After 5 days of imprisonment! What a relief!
meh, I bet OP will do yum -i boot-repair in his fedora

probably... i still hold the line on my reasoning, but i understand your objection. it's valid.
@Seth I don't take exception to not being invited. I have a really fixed position on the issue, and it doesn't really align with flag all the things. I'm more on the ignore for a while then mass-delete boat.

Wow... that's awesome. You still remembered that little trick? :D
I remember lots of things...

yerp... he does. He was on my linkedin until I deleted it. again: I remember lots of things.

good luck
Yup, you do seem to remember a lot of things..
@hbdgaf ah, not on linked in anymore?
14:10
nope. not at all.

@Mateo cost benefit showed that linkedin was a waste of time.
when was the next mod election going to be held?
@hbdgaf that and some use it wrong, I've had a some try to link and I don't even know them
@AvinashRaj maybe this aprilk
i mean april
why don't you ask a mod?
14:13
I used it to follow interesting conversations and link ppl i know even minimally in various ways.... like how i knew you were jump for that thing the other day. It's still not worth it though. SNR is not good enough to make it useful
did you ever get school recruiters spamming requests and stuff?
I did not.
@Windows8 google.
To be fair, I already had loads of certifications and an MS, so I might have side-stepped their metric.
yeah, I did, for a masters ;p
@AvinashRaj: it would depend if they needed a new mod too
14:15
@hbdgaf ah,you already got the masters :) , they want me to come back for that.
Kartik and akanaks gadhe hai and @alvar okay i am googling
i did the BS and MS in like a year or so...
i sort of want there to be an election where someone else is elected while the spammers have a vote in the game just to make a point.
@JourneymanGeek hello geek
/me is probably sitting out the next one ;p
14:16
my 365 consecutive day on Ask Ubuntu today! :)

@Alvar wow gr8.
thanks
@Alvar nice
must have 20 rep to vote. i don't participate in moderator elections as a candidate because i know i'm not suited to it. this really should trigger an election to say, you could have invested in the community if you wanted your voice heard though
I looked in the history and I had 230 consecutive and then I missed 3 days. now another 365 later :D
14:18
/me stood in the last one in an attempt to keep someone out of the primaries ;p
and ended up the guy refused to sign the COC
so I was like 'lets see!'
@hbdgaf I have a few guesses on the next AU moderators (:
@Alvar what are those?
SE could just choose users instead of elections and i would be comfortable with that.
@hbdgaf: there's a few problems with that
they seem to be really awesome people.
14:20
Its a lot more work (though there's moderators appointed on new sites)
@Alvar I missed that
i believe they would come here and ask people like @foss who just showed up, and the mods that already exist about who would be good. i'm not in the running on purpose, but i think they could find good people that way... and not the spammers.
@fossfreedom I have to talk to you
@JourneymanGeek what is coc
@Windows8 then talk :P
14:21
code of conduct
@AvinashRaj coca cola
its an essential critieria for standing for AU elections
hm
me twaps @Windows8 with a rolled up newspaper
5
@JourneymanGeek can i stand in elections?
how does someone that wants to be a mod on AU not have a ppa?
@Utkarsh nice expansion
14:22
@hbdgaf: not everyone is a coder or maintainer
fair point.
@JourneymanGeek
even a translation ppa would qualify for having signed the CoC though
In finance, time-weighted average price (TWAP) is the average price of a security over a specified time. TWAP is also sometimes used to describe a TWAP trading strategy, that is a strategy that will attempt to execute an order and achieve the TWAP or better. A TWAP strategy underpins more sophisticated ways of buying and selling than simply executing orders en masse: for example, dumping a huge number of shares in one block is likely to affect market perceptions, with an adverse effect on the price. High-volume traders use TWAP to execute their orders over a specific time so they trade to...
AU actually has pretty lax rules otherwise, dosen't even have a minimum badge requirement, or rep requirement
14:25
Vote for JourneymanGeek
as I said, not standing for the next election XD
unless its a SU one
@JourneymanGeek SU?
SUSU?
superuser
SU is hectic somewhat... if it's not a troubleshooting question some will try to close them :)
superuser
@Braiam: used to be laxer ;p
14:27
The su command, also referred to as substitute user, super user, or switch user, allows a computer operator to change the current user account associated with the running virtual console. By default, and without any other command line argument, this will elevate the current user to the superuser of the local system. Usage When run from the command line, su asks for the target user's password, and if authenticated, grants the operator access to that account and the files and directories that account is permitted to access. john@localhost:~$ su Password: root@localhost:/home/john# exit ...
I had a highly upvoted question closed this week XD
i just rejected an edit on su... i was all "REALLY?"
i think mod election was held on every year.am i correct?
it went from how do i to download my software. which is clinically retarded
14:30
not necessarily
It can be run annually, if the existing moderators see the need
changing the heading or question is. it wasn't an answer edit. it was a question edit
(I suppose SE can do it too)
UL hasn't had an election for quite a while... since they get out the beta
@AvinashRaj you are here for first time( i mean first year)?
yes, for only 2 months.
14:34
@AvinashRaj ur profile says 3 months
sorry 80 days
@AvinashRaj i am also for 2 months but still you have more reputation
not too much...
@JourneymanGeek meh, at least is not a retarded reason like "actual problems that you face"
that phrase was meant for "what if ..." kind of questions
@Braiam: oh, I was actually asked to do it ;p
I did talk everyone out of
14:36
There are not necessarily elections every year
just if SE thinks an election is required
@fossfreedom oh, so no election this year?
aha
@Alvar not up-to-me - SE makes that decision.
@fossfreedom well, that statement was more of a question, has SE made a decision? (:
I cant answer that since I dont know - given that elections so far fall roughly on the same dates - not long to find out.
14:39
alright
so much to flag...
why isn't this account nuked?
or suspended...
@Alvar it is...
