hi @StefanoPalazzo!
@StefanoPalazzo got any nice queries for me to go through?
I am taking a break from packing
hi @Jorge :)
nope, nothing new at the moment.
there doesn't seem to be too much excitement around it somehow
well
we did get a bunch of work done
when I get a break for a day, I'll implement this idea of digesting Data Explorer queries and then we can let the community solve the problem of coming up with good queries
woo, famous question today
hah, only here 2 days and emmet already nearly has 400 rep
he's crushed my question. awesome guy
20:12
I am surprised he was there
sladen was putting a bunch of effort into it
but I think emmet works more with customers and stuff
I hope he converts his account soon, otherwise the 400 rep will be gone when he clears his browser's cookies :)
what's wrong with his account?
oh hello Jorge :)
hi octavian
It's an unregistered user, so his account is literally just a cookie
20:14
oh
well, he has an OID account
@StefanoPalazzo I've got some new Python books! :)
I dunno if you can merge it with that
@Jorge I can't. This feature is also used to post anonymously, so the mods can't do anything special with these accounts
that's great @Octavian :D
I'm convinced your time will not be wasted
When books and reading is involved time is never wasted. :)
20:18
both Paul Sladen and Emmet Hikory should have probably asserted their authority more clearly
allthough they might not be particular experts in what companies give money to the ubuntu project, so it's just as well I suppose
@OctavianDamiean yeah, I'm saying I think you might still be reading about python in 5 years :)
python does that to people, it sucks you in and then you forget how to write java. It's tricky like that :P
what we really need is some good heuristics to find bug reports disguised as questions. I see a ton of them in the last few weeks

Q: Unity tray panel shows icon as split into two

AshfameI am running default Ubuntu Unity, never changed any theme. And this has happened by itself, first for a single icon, then for all. I tried rebooting thinking the ATI drivers might have gone nuts and reloading everything should work fine but it didn't. One thing to add is that when I open up ...

@StefanoPalazzo I asked sladen to put his work stuff in his profile
@StefanoPalazzo if emmet creates an account you can merge it after right?
No I can't (90% sure)
Well, now that I think about it, I don't know how long the system takes to clean it up. So maybe I can
ok so basically
if someone ever just doesn't create an account they're screwed?
that can't be right
Well, if they create another account after that, I suppose I could merge them
The system may clean up the old one if it detects that they're the same guy though
if it doesn't, I could merge them - provided I'm sure that they're the same person
you can tell that doesn't happen often :)
20:33
should I send him a mail and CC you?
I'd love to have him on the site, so yeah :-)
I wish I could help to get everyone working at canonical excited about AU, they should all use the site. ;-)
5
That'd be pretty cool yes.
no, they should all work on making oneiric better :P
20:37
@StefanoPalazzo we've got a fair number now actually
really, don't hook full-time devs on AU :P
yeah for sure, heh
a bunch of them just vote often
I told them in the absence of time, voting is what they should be doing
Whos the design team leader now?
In my case at least, when the rest of the community was out of ideas, two of them stepped in
@OctavianDamiean ivanka, but she's on extended holiday
20:41
Oh so she will definitely return?
yeah
she just took like 4 months off to ride a motorcyle from alaska to the bottom of south america
she's gone a bit mad!
An extended holiday is something good. :)
From the blog post I was afraid that she is not going to return.
I will be self documenting a bunch of stuff on AU soonish
If you need my help with something, well you know how to reach me. :)
by the way @JorgeCastro, did you get a chance to look at the Ask Ubuntu Classroom thing yet? It'd be pretty awesome if you could hold a session or two
I'm thinking, filing bugs, contributing code and so on
20:47
I have no time this cycle
I got assigned to Ensemble and I'm basically doomed
you should talk to these people to get more help though
and try not to clash with ubuntu developer week, etc.
I'll try to do that!
Ultimately, in the back of my mind the AU classroom is to replace the Ubuntu classroom some day, tbh :)
heh
I doubt we'd ever not use IRC. :(
think big - why not? :)
20:51
Would make sense though.
no reason it can't be the same content, different medium thoughy
Oli
Oli
lernid is better for classroom settings than SE Chat, IMO
that's true. if we can get two people to moderate, we can just relay sessions here using a bot
yeah but lernid only got good the past few weeks
if you want to do a class you have to use a PPA, etc.
imo web-based is the way to go
@Oli Better yet victory chat!
20:52
hah
Oli
Oli
@JorgeCastro lernid has always been pretty good - better than a raw IRC client
hmm, do we have a question for turning random .py scripts into upstart jobs?
@OctavianDamiean not any time soon ;-)
I need 2 scripts to run at boot
we have one,
19
Q: How to run scripts on start up of ubuntu?

dustyprogrammerI was wondering how to run scripts when my computer starts up. So I dont have to run scripts manually that I always run. Please and thank you.

Oli
Oli
20:54
look at the cookbook. You'd want the exec line to be: su -c '/usr/bin/python /path/to/script jorge'
but it's not very canonical and not very specific.
the upstart cookbook you mean?
ah, I had forgotten
Oli
Oli
aye
Upstart needs per-user settings if it's going to survive.
turned a closed question into a bug report → win
(and, a user into a contributor \o/)
Oli
Oli
@htorque I don't know... I think it would be good once if the devs took seriously the most common (read: repeated) issues. I realise most of them are solid (and filed) bugs but there are too many graphics/compiz/unity and wireless driver issues still hitting users that can (and should) be handled more automatically.
20:59
man, my xbmc setup is totally horrible
I had power go out
and now I am realizing I have a bunch of manual steps to reset it up
I never bothered to make it survive a reboot
/me hands in his sysadmin card.
21:14
@JorgeCastro wb
21:39
@StefanoPalazzo greetings? :P
Use a PPA with a Password while still using Apt-cacher-ng? http://bit.ly/lwmDHN #ppa
SHUT UP YA STUPID FEED!
good night all
@htorque Goodbye!
see ya
@Lekensteyn is your script cross-OS compatible?
21:55
@TheEvilPhoenix: yes it is. It uses Javascript
@Lekensteyn and what about compatible sound formats? .WAV, .MP3, etc.?
@Lekensteyn and also, what about installation?
ah, there it is, .MP3 only
opens up a media type converter to convert some .WAV sounds into .mp3
22:22
hi all :D
@Alvar Hey, nice to see you!
@Alvar your move
@TheEvilPhoenix I know... thinking....
@Alvar and this is how i generate the PGN notation and also the diagram images: apronus.com/chess/wbeditor.php
@TheEvilPhoenix very good
22:25
yep
you can just plug in the entire notation that i keep attaching to the emails and it'll generate the board based on the notation :P
and you can even make a move and generate the new PGN :P
is this correct? apronus.com/chess/…
@StefanoPalazzo Noch da?
@Alvar yep that matches the board i have
let's see...
@Alvar plug this into the area where the "Absorb notation" button is :P

Hello. Does anyone in here also use Debian?
@Jez no sorry....
@Jez not really, but we'll try and help out where possible
Jez
Jez
well maybe you'd like to follow my Debian proposal :-)

@TheEvilPhoenix yeah...
@Jez what's the proposal?
Jez
Jez
22:35
1
Debian

Proposed Q&A site for debian users and developers.

Currently in definition.

@RolandTaylor up there
oh I see
follows
Jez
Jez
cheers
doesnt Unix & Linux already own the Debian area?
Jez
Jez
@TheEvilPhoenix seems a bit overreaching. there's a bunch of stuff specific to debian.
It would actually be wonderful if the major distros have SE sites
Jez
Jez
22:37
and there's an Ubuntu site, isn't there?
like a fedora one, a pclinuxos one
Jez
Jez
@RolandTaylor and do you have any ideas as to how to get the Debian proposal off the ground? how for example did this Ubuntu proposal take off?
@Jez following
Jez
Jez
@TheEvilPhoenix cool
@Jez populate it with a ton of good quality questions and answers
Jez
Jez
22:38
well i've submitted my 5.
i encourage you to do the same :-)
i've been through a proposal that failed (but it got to closed beta)
Jez
Jez
take some inspiration from ask.debian.net :-P
@Jez I wasn't around when AU got started, but I could help you promote the debian proposal :D
Jez
Jez
@TheEvilPhoenix which one was that?
@RolandTaylor cool, how?
@Jez HowThingsWork
22:39
@Jez facebook, twitter, forums, blogs...
Jez
Jez
@RolandTaylor cool, go for it
@TheEvilPhoenix Ah I think i remember that one.
@TheEvilPhoenix not enough questions?
eamiled....
nope, not enough quality answers... closed because of a ton of external links for answers

I am actually thinking of trying out Debian/Fedora/etc
I want to make some partitions on my hard drive and go for it.
Jez
Jez
I used to use Ubuntu.
I use to use...
Mandriva
:O
crickets
Or maybe it was Mandrake back then... I don't remember
Jez
Jez
i got sick of software not working, and the answer usually being "get them to fix it in Debian and it will make its way to Ubuntu". I decided to go straight to the source and switched to Debian maybe a year ago now, before they switched Ubuntu to Unity.
22:44
(I actually wanted to try Mandriva a few years ago, but didn't have my own laptop)
Jez
Jez
I haven't looked back and am pretty glad I have my Debian box here. :-)
shoots @TheX with rapid-fire Windows ME discs
Jez
Jez
Debian also has a fantastic community, and this Q&A site would be the icing on the cake
damn... that's cruel
heartless even!
falls over dead
22:45
@TheEvilPhoenix answered...
@Roland which, my attacking @TheX with rapid-fire Windows ME? xD
@Jez really?
@TheEvilPhoenix lol yes!
That's pure evil D:
Jez
Jez
I think the general order for computer users of increasing aptitude is Windows -> Ubuntu -> Debian :-)
last time I used Windows ME I was...
Jez
Jez
@RolandTaylor yup that's the truth
22:45
wait...
Jez
Jez
you've heard the saying?
did I ever use windows ME?
Jez
Jez
Ubuntu is an ancient African word meaning, "I can't configure Debian."
@RolandTaylor did you ever notice my name? :P
@Jez What I've heard (though I don't take it as true) is that "Ubuntu is a word that means "I'm too stupid to net-install Debian""
22:46
lol @Jez
Jez
Jez
haha actually even my installation of Debian was great fun.
(In reality, I'm too busy...)
Jez
Jez
First, I hard to find out on IRC that my Intel CPU needed the amd64 distro.
nice naming.
then i got a version I could boot from my USB stick
I want google+ :(
...
um...
Jez
Jez
22:47
for some reason the text-based installer was really dodgy with my screen but I persisted and it downloaded Lenny.
Jez...
O_+
-_+
Jez
Jez
then the graphics didn't work. After a while on IRC i realized that I needed squeeze to have the right graphics drivers (at the time, squeeze was testing)
so instead of redownloading everything I used aptitude to upgrade to squeeze
then it worked!
a really cool introduction to how flexible the apt system is
you can use a semi-working text interface to upgrade the system to a fully-working OS
Jez
Jez
well it had networking and text
I'd rather just install a fully working OS...
Jez
Jez
22:49
and not a lot else
@Alvar move headed your way
then just rip out what I don't want
Jez
Jez
@RolandTaylor well there was something cool about getting a bare-bones debian system and upgrading it to a fully working one
when I have time for games like that, then I can go with "text based installer with nothing but super cow powers"
Jez
Jez
like nurturing a sick pet back to life. i guess you had to be there.
22:50
@Jez I did that with Ubuntu minimal a few years ago - was fun, but a lot of work
Jez
Jez
i guess it's some work, but it's also very useful to learn about apt
for a person who has to provide tech support for others, that won't be a wise choice (having a dead system for a few days)
Jez
Jez
and i have to say, now I know the Debian release model (i'm on squeeze stable for the forseeable future), i have to wonder why on earth you'd bother with Ubuntu's irritating releases
oh, and I have my window minimize/restore/close in the top-right. :-P
do you get used to Unity quickly?
looking at screenies, i can't imagine myself liking it ever
-_-
you know...
you sound like me talking about gnome-shell
tolerates the hatorade cocktail party
Jez
Jez
I don't get it
did you hate gnome-shell?
