WALP!
I have a IBM T42 type 2378 which doesn't have an operating system at all. I downloaded the non pae ubuntu onto a cd. As I was answering the questions, I came to the archive mirror section which required the country which then provided me with the mirror that failed. What's sudo apt-get update? How do I run sudo apt-get update? Where do I find sudo apt-get update? Was I suppose to run it before I install ubuntu? — Jacquie 3 mins ago

WALP?
Yes, WALP.

Q: "Windows + left" equivalent in Ubuntu to move window

l19In Windows I can press Windows key + (left/right/up/down) keys to move a window around. Is there an equivalent in Ubuntu?

I need to calibrate my monitor. Youch!
01:59
Hi !
I have a questions, but not sure if it is right place to ask
it is about Linux Kernel Real-Time Scheduler
02:15
Sure, ask away.
I can't guarantee an answer though.
Do you know internal of it ?

I have an mp4 video taken with a galaxy nexus that I want to rotate 90 deg clockwise. I tried avconv and it looked like it tried to work, but took overnight before I killed the process...it's slow as heck and runs my CPU hot. Is there a simple way to rotate video files in something?
I tried winff as well, but that just dropped to avconv too
Check Android Video Editor
I haven't used it
it should have rotation function
it comes with Android
There's a difference between a flag instructing the player to rotate the video vs. decoding, rotating, and re-encoding the video.
What you need is the former. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that with avconv.
Hmmm. I think I need the latter actually...I'm trying to ultimately make a video DVD of some family videos
02:19
Wonder if using ffmpeg may help or if they both are just heads for the same libraries that will function the same.
@PeterTirrell What are you using to create the DVD files?
But some of them were taken portrait style and I need to rotate them to look right.
@NathanOsman I'm using DVDStyler right now, it seemed to have the better menu options. DeVeDe actually seemed to natively let me rotate videos, but it's menu editor sucks.
DVD Styler is a great tool. I haven't used it in a while, however.
Well that and the package version in Ubuntu seems to be a few versions behind, even in the PPAs. I haven't tried compiling from source yet.
It seems to do what I want to do, just some of the source videos I'm working with need tweaking.
02:35
Does anyone know what the avconv output means? There's a dup= value that I found some forum reference that that might be slowing it down, and a time= value that I wonder if that's incrementing up to the total time of my video. Like it's a 20 second video and it's at 0.12 now after about 10 minutes.

has anyone seen this

Q: Should answers advising the use of EOL versions of Ubuntu be flagged?

TrailRiderI came across this answer. While the rest of the answer is valid, the first option/advice given was to run 10.10. I did add a comment that it is dangerous to advise using EOL releases so that any reader(and hopefully the OP) will see my comment and at least be warned that it is not a good idea....

04:08
Hi all.

Yep, because sadly and correct answers exist :(
@Mitch Why don't you create an answer here?
This is how my eyes look whenever I see the source code words in a title on AU:

Q: This guy has a 101 rep with after only asking 2 questions and getting no up votes: Bug in Ask Ubuntu?

plattnumI really don't want to be a dick, but I ran across the following question: How to learn ubuntu after installing it from the following user: http://askubuntu.com/users/172308/deepak and I can't see why deepak would have the reputation he has... Is this a bug in the ask site itself?

Are they planning something similar for Askubuntu?

I understand the language could be issue too, since not all users are proficient in English. Should we down-vote the answer (but ...

Hey everyone! Has anyone heard something (or perhaps experienced him/herself) about network and/or mouse problems with the 3.11.0-14 kernel in Saucy? I have everything working perfectly on 3.11.0-12, but 14 breaks both mouse and network.

Q: Major graphics problem

Jesse HatchettI installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my old HP Pavilion ze1210 laptop. When I boot to Ubuntu it shows less than half of the screen; the rest is garbled and has a mixture of red and black squares. The top portion that is somewhat visible when the computer boots becomes distorted when I move the cursor (a r...

@Braiam OK, this question is giving me the blues because it got categorized as a black screen dupe when it's got red and black visual artifacts written all over it.
I know... that's why I voted to reopen...
@Braiam Now what do you think I should call this thing?
@Braiam Yeah, that's good. Thanks.
@karel did you vote for reopen?
14:34
@IgorZinov'yev I got a bad kernel update one time and I had to Force Version and Lock Version in Synaptic Package Manager back to the older kernel version. It went on like this for four or five kernel updates, and then finally the fifth or sixth kernel update fixed everything and after that I could continue to accept all kernel updates.
@Braiam Yeah, I edited the body text to clean it up and nominated to reopen it.
mm.... upgrade to saucy failed... and now ask me for a reboot.... mm.... what to do....
well, time to reboot *cross fingers*
@Braiam how do i get the posted answer link
14:51
@AvinashRaj what?
i answered a question.How do i get that link?
@AvinashRaj click on the 'share' button
@jokerdino thanx
15:23
@karel Yes, I thought that would also be my case, but I managed to fix it by installing a proprietary nvidia graphics kernel module. Don't know why, but now it's all working fine on the latest kernel
But I have another question now! Does anyone know how to make Ubuntu switch keyboard layouts using only right Alt key? The setting was there in 12.10, and I think in 13.04, but now it's gone.
@IgorZinov'yev there's a bug report that says that they really removed the option
@Braiam Do you mean they removed it totally? Isn't there any other way to make it work like this?
15:49
@IgorZinov'yev wait until they roll back the change
@Braiam OK, thanks
@IgorZinov'yev Take a look at the answers to the question: How to use Alt+Shift combo to switch keyboard layout. This question was asked by someone who was also using Ubuntu 13.10.
@karel Oh, cool, thank you!
@IgorZinov'yev 46 votes... it looks like a lot of people have that problem.

It was a SERIOUS problem a second ago. If it's serious, and you want an answer, you should ask it on the main site. It's not a case of what's right, it's that there are about 200x as many users on the site than in here.
@Utkarsh Yup.
@OLI okay okay, i will ask there but its hardware related. where to ask?
they will make it off topic
and thats a serious problem as because of that my private data is unsecure
@oli are you there?

hey. Can anyone tell me how to uninstall the default VGA driver? How to purge my OS of it.....since I am about to install the ATI catalyst beta driver
you're probably looking for "vesa" - xserver-xorg-video-vesa
but you probably don't want to remove it
hey Jorge
well, I am planning to use steam......so, I thought I would remove the fglrx part from the synaptic manager and then just install the beta driver. Is it a bad idea?
yeah
just leave it there, it just sits on disk anyway
and if the driver breaks then you'll need to fall back to it anyway
consider it like "safe mode" for X
so....for steam to work well...what shall I do? Just use the additional fglrx-updates?
18:25
I have a steam box too
but mine's nvidia
from the additional drivers
mine is ATI...it doesnt work with the default driver
I use the xupdates PPA, let me see if ATI stuff is in there
I mean steam
I know there is a driver for ATI in the software center....shall I install that?
I am not sure, I am not ATI-smart at all
can you tell me what the link is? I am a bit of an incompetent guy when it comes to VGA
18:28
well, let's do this first
install it from the software center
then you'd have it working at least
then after that we can look at updated drivers

@Braiam it worked :) thanks
@Braiam why're you sighing though?
(note my answer on your meta post was written without coffee, i've removed it because i didn't like my answer)
@ThomasW. I can still read it >:)
but the rest of the world can't so it doesn't matter
:P
mah, no seriously, these questions of late just keep me depressed
21:29
@Braiam dude, try doing my job, dealing with people abusing the bugs system
there's a few serial abusers who are constantly futzing with bug statuses and disrupting triage
questions here may be depressing. dealing with serial abuse is a different story >.>
newbie stupidity vs. serial abuse... i think the abuse of a system is worse :/
@ThomasW. that is why comments should be added by people in teams instead
@Braiam um... i didn't say comments
i said statuses
(saw a bug with >300 comments only of me-toos)
I.E. new, invalid, incomplete, fix released, etc.
fix released should be only for the bots/devs
21:33
@Braiam and bug control. but the unfortunate thing is the permissions only restrict Triaged and Won't Fix to certain groups of people
but meh
it's not hard to reverse the damage, it's just a problem when you see a lot of it
'course since i haven't had my normal amounts of coffee yet... shrugs
oh wait you have 10k+ right? No wonder you can see my deleted post.
lol, just soft-changes instead and a reputation/karma system should suffice
@Braiam LP isn't gonna change their perms i don't think, not yet at least.
i think they're in "maintenance only" mode with everything
so no new features or code or smth
21:48
lp's design kind of predates stackoverflows
so the whole concept of the community being able to manage itself is missing
for example there's no way for anyone to collectively remove +1 comments
@ThomasW. Just got this on the stack app
@Mateo Heh. No problem.
@JorgeCastro solution: have a bot that does it, add in the ability for bugcontrollers to flag those comments for bots to delete them. 'Course you're right LP's design predates SO's in that the community can't really manage itself
but if we had that then bugs would never get fixed, and bug triage would be chaos
@JorgeCastro yeah, that kind of actions like "flag" and "change status" wars

Q: Integrate my Launchpad/Open ID with stack exchange account?

I'ld probably give myself brain cancer if I had this wireless adapter dx.com/p/…
6000mW RT3070 USB dongle with 2 antennas for mimo for anyone interested but scared to click.
rofl
they had an even more crazyass one
i sort of have a nerdcrush on it...but i digress
I think that wattage rating is all gain from the antenna probably on the latter one.
2 to 4 km effective range?
23:31
@JourneymanGeek It would be even higher if it were a yagi of more of a directional than a pan. I've seen guys use dish satellite junk they harvested from dis-satisfied customers as antennas with a little modding get CRAZY distance.
At one point I even thought about trying a business model out here in the rural areas where there's a two mile gap in high-speed internet selling people wireless access rigs and charging them 125% of my bill per line, so I could have a 6 or 8 x 10Mbps bonded backhaul in my camper. No seriously...it's a legitimate business model.
just noticed the cap on the pooch. that's cute.
speaking of hats...when is that starting this year?
It must be night time, the trolls are coming out askubuntu.com/questions/386779/…

@hbdgaf No word on that yet... At least, non for us little guys.
Started on the 19th last year.. I suppose it will be the same this year too.
@Braiam i haz a bad disk image. i can get to the trial screen. can i use windows only software from the livecd boot to desktop but don't install (i'm assuming that's what he means by trial since there's no such thing)? download it again until you get a good iso...kthx.
@Seth i was just wondering
