Q: 13-10-black-borders-black-terminal

user221108Have the same problem as 13.10 - Black borders, black terminal. Found that I was able to use xterm, however the suggestions I found did not solve this problem. Upgrade til ubuntu 13.10 64bit on NUC Intel® Core™ i5-4250U CPU @ 1.30GHz × 4 Graphics Intel® Haswell Mobile

Someone want to bounty the master question perhaps?

A: How to uninstall Mint?

user217472To remove Netflix: Open terminal type this command: sudo apt-get autoremove netflix-desktop Press Enter

(the answer isn't even remotely related to the question)
that works too :P

Hello
Hello!
I'm new here :p and tell me is there an app for this(chat) that can run on my ubuntu-13.10 ? (googling stackexchange chat doesnt help :p)
there isn't any app specifically for the chat
it only exists in the interwebs.
yep, you'll never find an app for it, the chat exists solely on the interwebs and not as an app
01:55
just a test for markdown-for-chat
*blah* _blah_
`ls -a`
---strike---
[tag:ls]
strike
@BhathiyaPerera: there's no desktop app
which is annoying since it would make writing a bot easier ;p
@JourneymanGeek @ThomasW. : I know too sad that there is no app for chat
why didnt markdown work, those are the things i typed
@BhathiyaPerera only works on single-line apparently
multiline, and it breaks
also use the sandbox next time
there is a sandbox channel

Sandbox

Where you can play with chat features (except flagging) and ch...
use it, its there for that purpose of testing
thanks for that didnt knew it, sorry for trying it here (if it upsets you)
no problem, just for future reference :)
02:00
though strikeout works inside text and I have no idea what underscores do
true
but when you multiline things markdown fails here on the chat
apparently
yep multiline breaks it
star == underscore
*star* == _underscore_
apparently star underscore_ works the same as *star star and underscore underscore
ooh, borken

Q: Are question about removing another OS but Ubuntu on topic?

BraiamTitle says it all. This question inspired this meta-Q. So, are questions about removing another OS but Ubuntu on-topic? Relevant comments: mint is offtopic on askubuntu. But you can format the partition with mint on it with gparted. FOr the remainder: mount the partitions and you can c/p dat...

Can someone do me a favor and give me one upvote on this comment? askubuntu.com/questions/385253/… I need that to show above the other comments, and not hide under a collapsed "More comments" button, because the problem went away on their system.
Also send this answer to the abyss: askubuntu.com/a/385262/10616
@ThomasW. : Done
thank you
Has anyone installed ubuntu using this tutorial ? insecuregeek.blogspot.com/2011/07/…

I'd rather use the guidelines for installing which are outlined by the Ubuntu Touch project's stuff.
i forget where they are, i could get the link from the #ubuntu-touch IRC channel's topic...

Q: I there any other way to restrict USB storage?

Ruban SavvyI have been using /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf to restrict USB storage but all employers are given root permissions, so they are removing restriction very easily. Now, what I'm looking for is is there any other way to do this (which is more hard to undo)? I'm using ubuntu12.04 LTS. Thanks

@ThomasW. : please do it if you are not busy, Thanks in advance
good morning folks
@rajagenupula : Hello
05:29
@BhathiyaPerera you're looking for the ubuntu for phones thing though right?
i don't think the ubuntu for phones (ubuntu touch project) is fully "usable" yet though
there's been a lot of bugs drifting around about it, so use it carefully and at your own risk
ah I'm more interested in using a loopback device to run ubuntu on top of android, which is safer
ah okay
use what you will
however i wouldn't even trust running ubuntu in a loopback device :p
Thanks for your support Sir. :D
05:34
because on the phones it's unpredictable that way anyways :P
granted i haven't tested that, it would probably end up the same, regardless of method of loading, IMO

Q: Is it reasonable to warn people about a bug and provide a workaround?

plattnumThe title is about it. But, specifically there is a bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1227365) which causes no grub menu to appear on loading (even holding down shift). I fixed the problem by running boot-repair. I just wish someone had told me before I had to do a comple...

@Rinzwind, how is this for an idea: Every unregistered users, are automatically redirected to the /about page. Meaning they know, what and how to ask, before they are able to ask. And if they still ask off-topic questions. I wont feel bad raging on them :)

Q: Invoking PolicyKit/polkit via xinit/startx?

freshlybummerI recently upgraded a minimal installation of Ubuntu (with no full-fledged DE) from precise to saucy and since doing so I'm no longer able to mount removable drives as a normal user. @blade19899 This was covered somewhere before but it's to stop you burning out and to stop you being over-represented (the votes are supposed to be a reflection of the whole community - if you hog all the questions some people won't get to vote)
@Oli ah, understandable. +1 for kinda thinking of your users :)

Q: Is there a basic stackexchange like engine available for my personal usage?

blade19899I have a website that I wrote myself(because thats the best way to learn anything). Its still not finished, One of the many things that I want to write, is a web-editor. I have been using stackexchange(askubuntu)for a while now, and I really like the timestamps/revisions/lastactivity/suggested ...

Damnit, i know that stackoverflow was the first website by stackexchange. soo i just asked there. I jumped the gun.
the correct site is [mso] if you want to ask about StackExchange or StackOverflow

@Braiam Remember when you're editing not to just do the easy bits :) That post was a mess. Sorting the tags is the least important bit.
@Braiam, thanks, still have my answer tho. But, for future reference, i now know where to go.
@blade19899 you should ask your question to be migrated or DV will rain

Does anyone know of a good article where I can learn how to setup a RAID 10 array? I am installing Ubuntu on a 32gb flash drive with four 2TB drives. Would it be better to use desktop or server since this will be a back computer?
this might help some one (Rom tool box pro is on sale , ~2-3$)

@Matt_2.0 What do you mean by "back computer"? You mean headless?
Here's an article about installing Ubuntu with RAID 10: howtoforge.com/install-ubuntu-with-software-raid-10
@Seth just a raid10 PC that Im going to use as an ftp server for backing up iles
Seems a bit dated though.
@Seth ya most of the resources Ive serached and ran through are dated
@Matt_2.0 Ah ok. Well deciding between desktop and server depends on how you plan on using it. If you have a nice spot with a monitor and keyboard for it then you should definitely go desktop (though I'd go easy and do Xubuntu or Lubuntu). I suppose you mainly plan on using SSH to control it when needed?
ya it will be in a rack.. Looking at FreeNAS as a reliable solution for my PCs and Macs
17:47
I'd probably go with Lubuntu..
18:09
They make this thing called Ubuntu Server

can someone upvote this comment? somehow closevoters do not read em.
20:48
@Braiam maybe you could elaborate why you are emphasizing this - the comment is a little terse :-) - you want to close it as off-topic/can not be reproduced ?
it didn't. I've re-installed. At the very least I've learned that I need to be careful even when doing trivial tasks. :) Thank you for your help though! — user206727 Oct 23 at 22:02
@guntbert exactly
thought so, but your comment above made me uncertain, the question is almost closed, and I didn't think you wanted to give it a push towards faster closing :-)
nah, the problem was that in the queue users are voting for "leave open", since they can not read the comments in the answer...
