jrg
Nothing I can do that you can't in that regard.
I can only edit the stuff out.
somehow I'm seeing comments as answers here askubuntu.com/q/9248/169736
@jrg You can get a comm mod to do it though.
I don't usually have that leverage.

Only after it's been vetted on meta.
I can't just say "please do this"
besides, my usual point of contact is on vacation until monday.
so... meta? :\
sigh.. I guess. My earlier attempts at getting tag work done on meta all failed.

Are these the same tags?

@Braiam Can you pull up a question per month data query for me?
I'm not good with the data explorer.
Aug 29 at 21:11, by Braiam
@Lucio nope, everytime I try to play with a db I feel like a guy with fat fingers trying to thread a needle
Oh.. OK. I guess I'll try my fat fingers than. I hate asking someone to do something I won't do myself if they aren't better at it than me.
@NathanOsman Wow. That is a feat!
Hmm. This one appears to work.

Q: Should 'sharing', 'copy' and 'text' be burniated?

SethI've come across the following tags: sharing copy and text It is my opinion that these tags should be completely removed from the system as they are too ambiguous. What are your thoughts?

@Seth @Braiam get off my case, I've reanalyzed the tags and removed my prior opinions.
done
isn't in the mood to get yelled at by people today about his opinions
yesterday, maybe.
@ThomasW. somehow I didn't got pinged...
but not now since i've had one hell of a time getting the system to work
02:56
:/
@Braiam because typo.
@ThomasW. No worries. I'm not that easily offended ;)
officially hates building software from source
to get this specific software to build I had to backport software from Quantal to Precise just to get the build deps :/
THEN i had to fight a failure in the code that was because it wasn't reading a path right...
THEN it just didn't run the build...
officially agrees, especially C/C++ apps
lol
@ThomasW.: try doing it on a raspi
You will know the true meaning of H8

Q: Anyone interested in a regularly scheduled, multiplayer game of 0 A.D.?

Nathan Osman First Game Scheduled for Oct. 13, 2013 at 5PM EDT [click to view in other timezones] I am pleased to announce that we will be having our first game this weekend. The game will start at the time scheduled above, so be sure to show up early to make sure you get to play. We will be...

Mark your calendars.
@JourneymanGeek strangely enough, the same software builds flawlessly on a raspi
@ThomasW. I'm not sure what exactly you're doing, but apt-get build-dep package-name and apt-get source package-name --compile might be of help.
@JourneymanGeek yet it basically tells me to [CENSORED] when I try and build it on the laptop
@Seth E: Software Not In Ubuntu
03:02
@ThomasW. That's what I figured :-/
so no, it wouldn't, it's a source-compile for a bitcoin miner
mm... I doubt you would compile those
builds fine on a raspi (I borrowed a friend's to test that), but builds only after lots of hate on the laptop itself
they has dependencies on non-free stuff
@Braiam how fortunate the one i use doesn't
the stuff's all opensource and all was in the repositories
i just had to backport a couple to precise because i needed the newer versions
03:03
@ThomasW. You could virtualize the Raspi's ARM processor on the laptop :P
mm... the miner, really?
@ThomasW. which one?
@Braiam bfgminer
(and don't tell me is a CPU)
the ONLY non-free thing on there is the AMD drivers, but the only thing i really needed to install was the opencl-dev stuff
and then it built
@Braiam regardless of the situation, the problem was Linux was having a fart
i finally said "DIE YOU!", removed the deps completely, reinstalled, then it worked
no idea why it didn't before...
shrugs
mm... it has a ppa
03:06
yes it does. the PPA doesn't have CPU support
(it's not configured in the rules)
now, the only thing i hate more than compiling software...
... is working with php... that's pure evil...
./configure --disable-option-checking '--prefix=/usr'  '--build=x86_64-linux-gnu' '--includedir=${prefix}/include' '--mandir=${prefix}/share/man' '--infodir=${prefix}/share/info' '--sysconfdir=/etc' '--localstatedir=/var' '--libexecdir=${prefix}/lib/bfgminer' '--disable-maintainer-mode' '--disable-dependency-tracking' '--enable-ztex' '--enable-bitforce' '--enable-icarus' '--enable-cpumining'
@Braiam in the latest update?
3.3.0 is the newest bfgminer :P
actually, i'm using cutting-edge git :P
3.2.1 < latestRelease
yawns
forget it... is just 1 version but the changes are humongunous
bugfix, bitfury, bugfix, bugfix, bugfix, bugfix, bugfix
03:12
mhm...
there is also a bug in 3.2.1 where when you close bfgminer...
... it'll also try and kill the gpu itself
in windows and linux
which triggers bluescreen / kernelPanic
so far it hasn't done that in 3.3.0
grr... found a bug in add-apt-repository...
@Braiam oh goody! bugs to fix!
what broke.
papercut
when you press Ctrl - C to cancel adding a ppa, it trows python keyboardinterrupt, instead of handle it gracefully
^CTraceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/add-apt-repository", line 161, in <module>
    sys.stdin.readline()
KeyboardInterrupt
IMHO it shouldn't
03:21
it's always done that because it's python... python KeyBoardInterrupt will trigger traceback like that, I don't think you can avoid that

Hey guys, I am not really an expert when it comes to rooting tablets and installing custom software, and was wondering if anyone would be able to refine (and describe in more detail) the instructions from the link on this page for me: wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices/p3110

Q: How do I go about porting Ubuntu Touch to xyz device?

Nathan OsmanI would like to port Ubuntu Touch to a device that is currently not supported. What are the requirements for doing this and where do I begin?

04:35
@Braiam, sorry for my late reply: That doesn't actually have instructions on installing Touch
@WasabiFan it means that there are not more detailed instructions about how to do it ;)
I have looked, and I know that there are no other instructions... I am just hoping that someone here can translate what I have found in to something simpler.
you should favorite the question so when it get updated you get informed
I did ;) I just was hoping that I could get faster help now, as well as on-line support.

so happy birthday to me.
14:57
I just made 440 gb free on my HDD to use it for Ubuntu do i need to give it the label /home? right now I have only one partition for ubuntu: /
@user320: you're confusing labels with mountpoints and partitions
the ubuntu default is one directory for root, and one for swap.
some people like to have a seperate partition to mount /home at if they reformat, but thats not necessary
I don't need swap, if I have 12gb of ram right?
This is what my parttions look like right now the one selected is the one I want to use for storage
Do I need a specify a mount point?
well
if you really need it you can have a swap file
looks fine to me
Now i have to figure out why I am getting 'permission denied' weh I try to write to my other harddrive
15:16
@user320 you need a swap partition to hibernate - but I never do because hibernating is evil. ;)
Also, you should not define mount points for NTFS data partitions with gparted.
They will be mounted from Nautilus from any user account.
If you need them mounted permanently for all users you should define a user-independent mount point in your fstab.
I do not hibernate. The parttion is want to use as extra storage is ext4
I am using nemo, but i do not think that matter, same applies.
@Takkat: can't you use hibernation with a swap file?
No, you need a partition for that
@user320 I had a look at your screenshot and saw a /media/jan/... mount point for an NTFS partition there.
thats for windows, I have a dual boot setup.
Oh - Windows has no mount points to /media/jan/whatsoever.
15:23
I have 2 ssd and 1 hdd
If you already have four msdos partitions you will have to define a secondary partition anyway if you need more.
1 SSD for windows 7, 1 SSD for Ubuntu
Evil like hell :D
All nightmares start with a deep hibernation.
then the HDD is 1.5TB
I have already split it up up: 1.1 tb for win7, 400 gb fir Ubuntu
15:26
So why not install Ubuntu on the SSD, put your data on the hard drive, and symlink to them?
Or, alternatively put HOME completely to the hard drive.
I have ubuntu installed on my ssd
but its only 120gb
I want to give it some space on my HDD
I have an Ubuntu on a 60 GB SSD - it uses less than 5.
Yeah but what if I have a lot of movies, etc. they do not all fit on my SSD
I have mine on a 40gb hdd with 16 gb swap ;p
that why I made rom in my HDD
15:28
Yeah - put all the heavy stuff on the HDD and symlink your ~/Video to there.
I have my mp3 and videos on my desktop to access them through LAN.
When I go to properties for my HDD partion for ubuntu I do not have permissions
so now I am following this guide

Q: Need Help Changing Owner of External HArd Drive

Thomas BallewMy understanding of code is about zero. I can open a terminal window, and type commands that are given to me, but that's about it. If someone can help me with this question, and explain at a level I'm likely to understand, thanks. If not, thanks anyway. I have an external hard drive with two par...

I found the directory for the partition
I am stuck on the last step: 'Then you can chown -R youruser:yourgroup /path/to/mounted/parition to change ownership to your user and group.'
how do i know what my 'youruser:yourgroup ' is?
Is this an ext4 drive?
yeah
I fomatted the 400gb partition to be ext4
but what is 'youruser:yourgroup'
it's your username and group (i.e. jan:jan).

Q: Is there a program to mount all of my drives automatically?

JrylSometimes, when I restart my computer, my drives will mount but sometimes they won't (like right now when I'm typing this question out). Is there an easy way, like a program that can mount them for me? Going in the console, making folders, etc. is NOT what I want. I like how Windows does it where...

^^this is for mount options from GUI.
Thanks, I am looking into it now
15:44
@user320 usually when you create a mount point with mkdir you need to be the owner of it to be able to access your files. If the mountpoint was created by root this is not the case. But you can always creat mountpoint within your /home/jan.
Then do not use sudo.
@Takkat The Gui method works very well thanks you
Hope you get all sorted out. Keep your data safe when partitioning. One backup is never too few.
i blame users getting spoiled by automount and fuse-fs
@Takkat I do not have another harddrive to back-up to.
@user320 lol - then be prepared to get bald from pulling your hair off :D

@hbdgaf Heya !
I am trying to install drivers for my ATI
ahoy
open source drivers
but I keep getting errors
The Ubuntu guide says purge fglrx first
so I am following the instructions here: wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/…
I have multiarch enabled
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core gives error
you don't "install" open source drivers for your ati card. i lost my ati beastbox anyway, so i'm at a loss unless someone wants to furnish hardware.
16:31
What do u mean ?
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libgl1-mesa-dri : Depends: libglapi-mesa
libgl1-mesa-glx : Depends: libglapi-mesa (= 9.2.0~git20131002+9.2.2eb55601-0ubuntu0sarvatt~precise)

family mailed it after removing the hard drive retaining screws, and i left the brick at my last move. i can't solve it without something to test it on.
@hbdgaf What is the error I seee ?
@LittleChild you are using a PPA
@Braiam thatis probably right
disable all PPA's then try apt-get update
16:33
@Braiam Please help me cause I am new :)

A: How do I remove a PPA added via command-line?

izxSimply run apt-add-repository again with the --remove option to remove a PPA added via the command-line, for example: sudo apt-add-repository --remove ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa Then update with: sudo apt-get update

he already told you. update then upgade after removing the ppa.

you can buy more in the pet shop :P
then your kittens needed killing

and now you're on ignore because you'e complaining...
I am sorry ? I do not understand what the error means
:)
ah, a clean feed. how i love that
16:36
@hbdgaf What do I do next ? :)
@LittleChild have you read the answer?
remove all ppa's then we talk
Yes the next step is to update
he hasn't read anything. he's a troll from so
-_-
OK the syntax is : sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:whatever/ppa but how do I remove all ppa ?
Please, I am not trolling @Braiam
my nope - bang, reflex is quite quick. if you want to change that, give me a reason.
16:39
here, more easy
ou can also remove PPAs by deleting the .list files from /etc/apt/sources.list.d directory.
yeah, that could be an option
OK working
OK done
now ? sudo apt-get update ?
Did you install something from those ppas
@AmithKK I dunno
:-/
What do I do next ?
16:42
ppa-purge is safer
tell us what you did
apt-get update? apt-get upgrade? apt-get install something?

Q: Difference between "ppa-purge" and "add-apt-repository -r"?

AlinwndrldWhat is the main difference between ppa-purge and add-apt-repository -r. Which one better clear residual items and reason to use one over another? Does add-apt-repository -r should do what ppa-purge do? Edit: Also do both remove key from apt's keyring?

Just executed sudo apt-get update
This is worth taking a look at
BBT
Good Night
@AmithKK All I need is to install ATI drivers :)
16:43
@LittleChild then try doing what you were doing before
@Braiam I was doing this: wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/…

it resulted in errors
and now?
