@Braiam perhaps we should make a PSA that says "Read the entire answer, people, or you miss things." :P
You don't have to "run" those, you have to edit the /etc/ppp/pptpd-options and add the lines there. The step 3 says exactly what is needed to be done. — Braiam 3 hours ago
@Braiam Comment those lines, not add — Radu Rădeanu 7 mins ago

Q: Error message "access denied" setting up VPN

user195992I am new to Linux and I am trying to learn as much as possible. I have installed Unbutu 13.0.4 and selected basic server, I am now trying to setup VPN to access my files from anywhere. However getting errors when disabling encryption. The steps I am following is below from one of the member here...

^ the question that's all related to.
write a darn # before the lines! :P
3: Edit /etc/ppp/pptpd-options. Open the file with your favorite editor (mine's nano, so the command for me is sudo nano /etc/ppp/pptpd-options), and comment out these lines by putting a # before them, if you want this to work universally on all OSes: ...
that's what it says now
because i realized you and the other person failed to read.
glares at someone who should know by now how to read the entirety of an answer, and see "Comment out" in the instructions
@ThomasW. no, he was trying to "run" the lines... "Error message: access denied"
yes i know
i'm commenting about YOU
You don't have to "run" those, you have to edit the /etc/ppp/pptpd-options and add the lines there. The step 3 says exactly what is needed to be done. — Braiam
note the bold-italicized text
I'm NOT that popular

then go reread the instructions on the setting up a vpn guide.
you'll see i say "Comment Out"
not "add"
also, i am being confrontational today...
i don't like that :/
isn't feeling well
I would say: look for these lines .... and comment them out, so they look like this: ....
@Braiam you can edit/revise my answer :)
the key points were copy-pasted from the guide I based the answer off of.
so...
they made certain assumptions about people's ability to do things.
don't assume people has the ability to do things... I have made the same mistake in the past... :(
@Braiam tell that to the person that wrote the guide :P
not me.
i'm too busy to revise stuff today
busy fighting against server failures and not feeling well

Sometimes Google fails... and fails spectacularly.
Wondering what would happen if I forgot to invoke .close() on an Image object in PIL (Python's Imaging Library), I searched Google for "pil forget close".
Google autocorrected it from "pil" to "pill".
You can guess what the search results were about.
Even more frustrating is the fact that even after I click "search instead for ..." it still gives the same results.
Can you add a -pill ?
I tried adding "python" in front. Worked much better.
21:41
@NathanOsman "you" "have" "to" "use" "quotation" "marks" "on" "every" "word". Still useless, but at least accurate.
Ups, I think I did a gem :D
@Seth ^
@NathanOsman 'python imaging library close fail' provides different results, but not better results
i think the search terms 'ubuntu plz halp' should automagically add site:askubuntu.com to the search term (no, not really)
anyone playing with devstack?
@hbdgaf but it sadly does :'(
21:50
@Lucio yes sir. yes it does
'halp' give me 11 results and 'plz' 148 results
that doesn't count searches on cached pages
How is that? What are the cached pages?
Ones that were deleted and now exist on google only
Oh, really?
I didn't knew that
21:56
(and other places that cache things) basically a backup of internet pages
I meant dork. I promise, I'm not intentionally making fun of a pretty awesome search algo.
I like ddg with the google search proxy dork.

Do we have a canonical question/answer for "How do I port Ubuntu Touch to [device name here]?"
23:18
I don't think so.
well, we should make a generic one and bounty it
Would you like me to write it?
I've been meaning to actually ask that question myself.
Just never got around to it.
@NathanOsman I'd love to have a canonical question for that
because askubuntu.com/questions/350506/… and similar are littering the place
and we need a generic Q/A we can point them to
whether it's the one about what hardware will be supported, or a "How To Install On most devices" or "How to Port to Unsupported Hardware"
we need one.

Q: port Ubuntu Touch to unsupported Tablet

R110I consider buying a Chinese tablet with an Exynos 5250 SoC. It is a Voyo A15. It is not supported by CyanogenMod, but there is a Custom ROM available for this tablet. I would want to install Ubuntu Touch on it. My question: Would it be possible to port Ubuntu Touch to this device? Considering it...

we have a generic "what hardware"

Q: What hardware will the Ubuntu Touch support?

Marco CeppiWith the announcement of the Ubuntu Phone OS I'd like to know what phone (and tablet) models are supported at this time. Note from foss & Oli: We are making this the master question for all future "Will this work on <insert random tablet/phone here>?!" questions

Q: How do I go about porting Ubuntu Touch to xyz device?

Nathan OsmanI would like to port Ubuntu Touch to a device that is currently not supported. What are the requirements for doing this and where do I begin?

23:30
yeah, we do have that generic question...
Feel free to edit away.
that one's not bad either.
but we'll need a canonical answer
I wonder if we should start closing the others as dupes of that one...
@NathanOsman perhaps. we can discuss that in meta.
note the comment I put
23:34
@NathanOsman I"m going to stop by the community team's IRC channel, see if I can't hunt down @JorgeCastro and get him to put a +500 bounty on that question if there's no activity on it in a week
yo
which one?
@JorgeCastro damn you're fast! :P
@NathanOsman lets do a bounty drive first,

chrome notifications ftw
23:34
@JorgeCastro in a couple days once it's alive for bounties
ah typing too slow
I'm writing up something for Meta.
I would just link to the porting guide as an answer
any answer will be a book and just duplicate the wiki content
@JorgeCastro then we'd have a thousand duplicates
well, you'd dupe those questions to the one Nathan just posted
23:36
Okay, but we still need a canonical question / answer.
I think there is stuff not on the wiki
we already have a decent number of duplicates of "Can I get Ubuntu Touch on [unsupported device]" and "How to get Ubuntu Touch on [unsupported device]
@NathanOsman Exactly
@JorgeCastro we don't have a canonical q/a for this yet
the question Nathan made is maybe going to become said canonical q/a
askubuntu.com/questions/328086/… this refrences extra manual steps missing for full port?
