@Seth StackO. counts?
@Lucio You need to submit that one!
I have never submitted anyone :(
When I found one, I tell to @Seth
00:28
Do I need a tumblr account?
@Lucio: Nope.
I see
A caption needed
I'm not good at this
> Mail required
@Lucio where was that?
SO
@Braiam Have you ever submitted something?
I don't want to use my real mail
mm... no... I always use @Seth for that... he so too much spam that he don't care anymore...
00:32
Me too :D
@Seth Give me your email!
:P
hi how much space do i need for the root partitions on an install. and i i do too much can i change it later?
like ~4G is enough
what are you basing this off
do programms get installed into the root folder?
or do they go in the home folder?
In previous docs that I've read
@Lucio found where... and found Oli too :S
00:35
There is a directory structure in every GNU/Linux system
@Braiam @Oli answer is the best
@user320 why you want to know?
see you later!
hi
i am trying to install ubunut on my ssd
its only 120gb
if you don't know use your entire drive for / so you don't have to change it latter...
@user320 That is great!
00:36
120gb for root? that can't be right
If you want to install only Ubuntu, though
For the whole Ubuntu syst
thanks lucio
but I am far from getting it installed right
I have less than 40Gb used and more than 1 year using it
Cya!
I need 3 partitions for linux right?
why you think so?
00:37
root, home , swap
why you think you need root and home appart?
i can have them in one?
of course...
cool
sorry i am new
> Your submission has been received and is awaiting moderator approval.
00:38
I use ext4 for that right?
@user320 why don't just let installer decide, there is a option that reads "use all my hard drive" or something like that no?
nope
its confused becuase i have win 7 on the other hdd
I want my ssd to have root&home, swap and then i made space on my hdd for files for ubuntu

Q: Installing ubuntu to a specific disk drive alongside Windows 7 on separate disk

RociI have deleted an entire disk drive (120 GB ssd) for ubuntu to be installed on. However, when I install ubuntu 13.04 from DVD, it never prompts me as to which disk drive to install on. Unfortunately, something is failing at the very end, so I have no idea where ubuntu is trying to install, but ...

That thread was of little help to me
@Braiam Emm.. what? I don't care about what anymore?
00:46
swap is harddrive ram right?
incase i run out of regular ram
@Lucio @Braiam I just get @FEichinger to post them to the gems... I don't like giving my email out and such. And he has a tumblr account.
@user320 Yes
if you have +4GB of ram and you don't use too many applications at the same time, and or don't need hibernation swap is meaningless
i got 12 gb of system ram
i have a lot of apps open though
in windows many times i hit the limit and it stated to dump to swap
Wow. Hitting 12 GB of RAM is hard.
I've never used more than 4 or 5, except once.
I have 1.5 GB of ram right now and most of it is used for write/read cache...
00:51
i use a lot of 3d apps
thats i want to switch to linux
win took 3gb of ram always no matter if i had nothing open
@user320 I have that issue too.
Windows apps ♥ RAM
@user320 bottom line, if you don't know, just use a single partition for all, I wouldn't recommend using swap on the ssd disk, thats all
so swap on an hdd is better,?
do i even need swap. what happens if i hit 12 gb?
linux start OOM killer and start killing the most hungry apps, just that...
I would get some swap.
00:59
but on the hdd right
Maybe 6GB. Depending if you want to hibernate.
i never hibernate
@user320 yes
so let me get this straight i can have home and root all on my ssd
swap on my hhd
and then more home on my hdd
home is just genreic files righ, like videos, etc.
are you planning downloading the world in your home? Just store stuff in windows partition and left your home empty
01:01
@user320 yes
thanks seth
setting up swap i easy i got that how do i create home and root both on my ssd what are the settings like ext4, etc.
do you guys like the unity look?
I see that this question answers what it is askubuntu.com/q/248914/169736 but we really need questions to have a tag like that?
@user320 It depends. Are you doing a fresh install?
my ssd is new my hdd has windows 7 on it, i want to keep it
i want my ubuntu to work technically without the hdd
You would arrange the partitions during the install then.
01:16
yeah its quite hard though
I recommend launching a live session and then install from there.
I tired that I get confused with the partitions
@user320 No, not really. I've never used a separate /home before, but root and swap are easy.
root os for boot right and home is for files where do programm like chrome get installe on?
@user320 No.
Home is just for personal files
The Chrome binary would be located on / (root)
01:19
swap is not necassary right?
if i take my hdd out one day and my ssd no longer has acces to it it alls good right?
It should be.
Unless the OS gets confused because the swap drive is gone.
shouldn't happend anyway
but root is where programms get installed right?
Yes
Usually in /usr/bin I think.
But it depends.
okay and do you know what the settings might be for the partition?
What kind of settings?
And which partition?
01:31
i gtg will you be on tmrrw morning(10 hours from now?)
@user320 Emm... I don't think so.
01:56
@Braiam Why did you reject this? askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/162061

do we really need this tag? http://askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/hardware-enablement-stack
Well "too minor" was the wrong reason then.
Nope, too minor if I don't believe that the edit is worth of being done whenever the post could be further improved or that the improvement is too small that it is of no worth.
If it's an improvement how can it be of no worth?
You leave the editor going "what did I miss here??"
Because is too minor, it won't improve anything of importance. (and yeah I like recursion puns)
you won't ask what something means and add a tag that explain what it means... for that you read the tag
Emmm.

@EricLambart about your comment here, I'm talking about this

Q: how to install Kali Linux without cd and flash drive

Angga Movici was download kali linux. but size is too large for my flashdrive, my flash drive is 1.8gb and the kali linux iso is 2.3gb. i used asus eeepc 1215p where ther is no cd/dvd room. my machine was installed with ubuntu 12.04.3, and i have empty partition. i want to install kali linux into that parti...

@Takkat, sorry, this is in bash =D.
Basically, this is what I want to do:
if grep -q '/var/log/audit/audit.log' "$RSYSCONF"; then
continue
else
echo "[ERROR] Something went wrong with adding the configuration to $RSYSCONF. Quiting script."
exit
fi
But it doesn't work, because "continue" is for loops.
Is there a way to "skip" the true condition?
Sketched my report using wireframesketcher and hit save.

`This copy of WireframeSketcher is unlicensed, so you cannot save your work.` WHAT???
07:21
@Alaa if ! grep -q '/var/log/audit/audit.log' "$RSYSCONF"; then echo $ERROR
@Takkat yeah I want to do that, but according to the comments to this answer, I shouldn't.
Oh wait, but it's okay to run it without [ ]?
@Alaa hmm - I did not get what they mean with flip... :/
Because the if statement does something if it's true, and does something if it's false.
So instead of using a !, just flip the actions.
Yeah, so it's if conditions; then run code; else error
Yeah, the answer is if ! conditions; then error; else run code.
So they're telling him you don't need to use !, and just flip error with run code instead.
Anyways, let me try this out!
07:30
Which should be the same, but you may have several else conditions to make things more mature in the sense of debugging woes.
<-- thinks that code should run, not look beautiful but that's a spare time coder's view ;)
Yeah it's the same, I guess the comment is trying to say that it's just a bit more confusing if you're using if ! conditions when you can just use if conditions.
LOL yeah.
Awesome. It works. Danke!
Code that works is better than code that runs but does not do what it should.
<-- did not start his new project because of lack of time for debugging nights
Actually, the worst kind of code is the one that runs but does not do what it should.
I'd rather it spits out an error than go mess something up.
It generally spits out an error after it messed up things :D
Haha yup.
07:40
I so much look forward to never ending long winter nights when people sit in front of their fireplace and I sit in front of my buggy code.
Once I get it all sorted out they will change the API I was using.
For some reason, that reminded me of Breaking Bad's last aired episode.
Hey is there some kind of awesome program that "goes through" your code to check if something is wrong?
Like, missing parenthesis, wrong variable names
it's me manually testing all possible variants of usage. I always forget the most obvious.
Like, if it finds you typed $MYVR when there's no variable declared that's called that.
Yeah variants of usage is okay, but syntax could be done using a program =/, it would definitely save some time.
I code in Python because the interpreter always tells me what I missed.
Oh okay. I wish nano in gnome-terminal did the same thing =D.
Anyways, I need to get back to my rookie, first ever bash script.
See ya around.
07:44
Some years decades ago I tried with C but had to give up because my apps always made my computer crash.
Then booting took ages.
08:28
@Alaa use vim.
Mine does syntax highlighting, error highlighting as you type for most cases, and suggestions on best practices and messed up logic.
with plugins, of course, but its the best IDE I have.
also has attribute and variable name completions and a documentation in a split window while tabbing through suggestions.

12:13
hi
anyone able to help me with an install?
12:27
@user320 sure - fire away.
i have on hhd for windows 7 with about 300 free space i made for linux. I also have a new ssd i want to install the home and root on
basically hdd get swap and extra home and ssd get root and promary home
ok - so the issue you have is?
what is is?
I am not sure how to set up the partitions right
so the ssd is plugged in and currently windows 7 sees it as a second drive - correct?
becuase in the nd i will have 3 total: --1-root&home(ssd)--2-swap(hdd)--3-more home(hdd)
*end
my hdd is 1.5tb 1200GB for windows nd 300 for the swap and extra home
12:37
@user320 root and boot should be on the SSD - swap can be either. Home should be on the hdd.
@user320 why didn't you did what Seth and I said?
? so this is an ongoing saga @Braiam ?
aren't root and boot the same thing?
@fossfreedom from here onwards
Braiam not sure how to set up the settings, like i said
12:41
if you are not sure, then don't do it... just install it using the big bearded wizard and you will be good.
can anyone tell me how many partitions i need, in my case
the wizard ony gives me the option to install on the hdd
unplug the hdd and you will see the ssd
@user320 to get the best performance/size compromise - root should be on the ssd. /home should be on the hdd. /swap like I said could be either - personally I would put /swap on the hdd - reduces the read-write cycles.
okay. are boot and root the same thing or are the y different partitions
/boot can be a separate partition if you want it to be. Keep it simple, just have / (root) and boot will be automatically created under it on the SSD.
... but before you start ... you do have a full system image backup of your PC?
12:46
somewhere
yes
home is for files like videos right?
all user accounts will be in /home - /home/yourname/Music etc etc.
Hey, sorry to jump in, but I'm writing a script that first checks the Linux version: "if this version, do this, and if this version, do this".
The "do this" part is pretty big, like 40 lines of code. What's the best way to do this?
Do a huge if statement at the top?
@Alaa use a function
make it a function that you call in the if then else part.
Cool. I'll look into functions. I already have the code written though, will it be as easy as just putting "function ()" at the top and that's it?
Or would I have to change some stuff in the code?
12:51
@Alaa bash?
Yup.
function nameoffunction {
    AWESOMENESS HERE
}
Awesome. I'll do that. Thanks!
if you function require parameters just use $1 $2 $3 $4 etc
I actually still have to understand these parameters, "$"-then-something-after-it.
12:55
btw, Luis Alvarado took all the close votes from you @Alaa :P
I like to call them "automatic variables".
lol
No, I got them back =P. These votes stack up pretty quickly man.
do your function reads some arbitrary data you need to provide?
And yeah, you got your 20 before he came in =P.
Can I just declare variables inside the function?
Like, I'll have this inside a function:
SYSCONF=/etc/syslog.conf
And this in the other function:
AUDISP=/etc/audisp/plugins.d/syslog.conf
RSYSCONF=/etc/rsyslog.conf
What you're saying is that I can declare those at the very beginning, then pass them to the function?
12:57
dunno... never has done a bash script :P
Haha. Well, it's okay. I don't want it to be a "super duper awesome script".
I just want it to get things done.
Thanks. Going back to it.
@Mahesh thanks, I'll definitely look into vim.

Hey guys. Does anyone know of a "project" plugin for gedit?
like a folder view?
hum, ya
i think it is available in the gedit-plugins package
hm, actually gedit-developer-plugins
How would one install that?
14:29
I'm searching for it, but can't find anything
@Crake you search it in the software center
nvm
I think I'm finding it.. Duckduckgo was not finding.. google is
@jokerdino, I can't find it in the SC
nvm, found it
@joke can you kill this one? askubuntu.com/q/349937/169736
yeah
now tell me what on earth it is
thats a spammer across the network - quick google shows drupal was indexed before the mods there deleted it.
what makes it more fun is those sites that rip off our answers have grabbed this already ... but havent deleted it :) wyldeplayground.net/…

so
hold on
i can't get ubuntu installed without the installer chrashing on me
@user320 did you check the md5sum of the ISO you downloaded?
yeah
i am so lost it worked fine on my laptop
it worked as a live CD - but crashes during the installation? Where does it crash?
"it worked fine on my laptop" ... you are installing on this laptop or is this another PC you are installing on?
i am installing on a desktop
I have an nvidia card
i entered nomodeset before i start the cd and it still crashes
is there a way trough the terminal to get and install a nvidia driver?
..........
anything to say.?

@Lucio I have a twitter... whenever I use it... is another mather altogether
17:06
my install freezes everytime and i have to crash my computer
i am starting to get frustrated with this
17:32
why is ubuntu 13.04 so borken
i see so many threads for 13.04 not installing easy
17:54
@user320 don't blame Ubuntu. Blame Microsoft with their UEFI.
75%-ish of the problems stem from that :-P
Only users who have an issue post here. My 13.04 installed in less than 15 minutes. No issues. All runs out of the box.
So what should I post then?
@Takkat same! 15 minutes is all it takes for an install. And in the mean time I use firefox to browse the web :D
lol yeah \o/
Major mistake you could make is trying to tweak the system, or install it to weird locations or convince a hostile operating system to play nice.
I do not even think I had any problems installing except for the 1st Ubuntu release :P
and 1 release had a buggy network manager so I used wicd till that got fixed
My issue came with 9.04 dual boot when something partly overwrote the Windows XP boot with a Vista boot. This was almost unfixable as Windows kept complaining.
18:06
That is -all- I can remember that I had problems with. Even the beta's have been kind to me :D (and the NM thingy was from a beta too so does not really count)
Yeah well that is just it: do not dual boot >:-D
Dont, yeah.
mine crashes if I use u+1, hence I made it a point to keep the current stable around for emergencies.
and for any important works. :P
I use Ubuntu on my notebook and game on my PS3. Only for Guild Wars I have a system that has windows on it
I have an emergency Windows on the old box in case something needs a new firmware.
And that windows is XP :D
@Takkat I normally do that from linux with a usb stick
18:08
Our favourite narutard is here *hugs @Rinzwind*
@Braiam I am not a narutard >:) I am death noter :D
If the firmware needs a proprietary Windows soft I conside the hardware as crap.
so be careful with what you say or else...
@Rinzwind you late bloomer :(
you need more FMA, Stein;Gate and Gigants Attacks love :/
attack on titans is my fav. anime ever. Elfenlied got down to 2nd >:)
S;G was briljant :D
18:10
Elfen lied is sick!
I have the manga pilled up somewhere in the hd...
ok enough off topic >:)
there is not offtopic :P
"General discussion around"
:)
*hugs the penguin* :P
Generally around my Ubuntu computer, so... It's good!
18:14
hmm
idea
can't breath squeezing too tight
IF using a computer with Ubuntu can any discussion here be off topic?
feels good whenever a bug gets squashed... silly but still squashed bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=67196
then I'm offtopic all the time :S
but they sure leave a mess those squatted bugs.

Q: Using external hard disk to boot 2 different computers with different hardware

MgamerzI'm a CS student at my university, so I typically run a version of linux at my home computer when I do programming in C or other linux specific stuff. can someone explain to me why the heck people has so many problems installing skype!?
hello :D
64 bit system and it's installed!
someone must be trolling...
jrg
jrg
@Braiam it's an odd junk of junk.
like, it's to the point where when I needed skype, I would either use my phone/iPod (whichever I had at the time), or I would use it inside a windows VM.
no, I'm wondering why apt/dpkg gets broken whenever someone installs skype in a 64bit system...
