Q: iptables one IP through another network interface

Ethan HThis question is very similar to what I am trying to do: iptables --set-mark - Route diferent ports through different interfaces However I attempted to follow the answer but I was unable to make it work. I have one device that I would like to route through a PPTP VPN connection. If I do it on my...

Q: rsync all files of remote machine over ssh without root user?

redanimalwarI have this command to backup a remove machine. The problem is that I need root rights to read and copy all files. But I rather have no root user enabled for security and use sudo the ubuntu way. How would I do this, guess I need some cool piping or something. rsync -chavzP --stats [email protected]....

@LuisAlvarado this is sorcery! You stole my daily 20 close votes =(! i.imgur.com/zu3gLpS.png
Haha just kidding. This is the first time I have ever seen the Close Votes queue at 0. I'm documenting this! i.imgur.com/MjPbHLs.png. This is a milestone!
By the way, I think it would be a nice idea if some kind of special privilege is implemented that increases the maximum cap to 30 or 40 reviews per day, per review queue, based on how many reviews the user has done on that queue.
It's a long overdue and deserved privilege for @EricCarvalho anyways =D. I'm starting to get the feeling this guy has implemented some kind of bot to do reviews...either that, or he's paying interns =).

Unbelievable. All zeros! i.imgur.com/ep1c0bC.png. All zeros!! I want to cry from joy.

@Takkat you may be interested in this: askubuntu.com/q/349386/10698 since you are German! ;)
@Takkat I would just tell them to use Google translate and be done with it.. Or use Google translate to translate the answer to German.. :)
@Alvar I am at writing a comment ;)
@Takkat yaaay
@Takkat btw it should be moved to meta...
flagged as such already ;)
I closed voted it :P
to move.
its a dupe on Meta anyway ;)
08:17
@Takkat then it should be moved to meta, closed as a dupe :)
yaay it migrated :P
His previous posts weren't too bad (form the language view) anyway.
well his English were pretty good, I've seen much worse...
yeah, and if he really needs German support he can go to ubuntuusers.de (where he is a member already).
haha
@jrg a moment ago, Steam didn't have a client on Linux. Now, they're building their own OS. That's good progress.
08:25
well if he really needs German speaking support dont come here?!
@Alaa omgubuntu claimed the base of the steamOS is ubuntu12.04 - should be interesting to see if this is fact or fiction.
@foss it could be, since it's the Linux operating system that is most used by normal desktop users.

Q: Can't english, is there a german Supporter here?

lupopaThere are many people who can not speak English. Why we are obliged to write in English? Are there any German supporter here on Askubuntu? That's just sad: (

I wonder how it's going to look like though. A stripped down version of Ubuntu with Unity and Steam installed? That would be really boring =D.
@Alaa dont wander into the phoronix forums saying stuff like that ... you'll get eaten alive.
08:30
Haha. So what's the most used Linux OS by normal desktop users according to them?
anything but 'buntu
Haha haters be hating.
Did Valve say when SteamOS will be available?
"soon"
was the only thing I heard in tine line...
Hmm okay.
don't think it will be more than a month..

Q: How can I cancel a vote down?

Luís de SousaMoments ago I mistakenly voted a question down, I'd like to undo that action but can't find out how. If I press the up vote button the voting count goes up by two units (which makes sense) but what I need is something like cancel vote. Thanks.

I'm new here, so, Yay! I've recently read a lot of questions here about ubuntu audio, either related to pulse audio or directly with the hardware etc. Why's this 'audio' problem popping up all of a sudden, I wonder? Did an update mess things up?
? what audio problem?
... and welcome!
For instance, people asked about why's there no 'Normalization' option in ubuntu, why's microphone detection quite difficult in laptops, VLC and pulse audio crashes after pauses etc...
personally, I've never had any issues since probably the ubuntu 10.10 days.
I wonder if Nixie Pixel was somewhere here in these forums.

google translate doesn't make sense goo.gl/OEvvTg
@Achu the english is as chinese as the chinese version :P
lol
12:40
Haha.
Quick question guys.
How do I check if a file does not contain a string?
if grep -p 'active = yes' "$AUDISP"; then
that check if it's there, but there's nothing I want to do after "then".
Basically, the script just edited a file, and I want to make sure that the string has been edited.
It changed active = no to active = yes. How do I test that?
grep -r -v "bar" . | grep -v "foo"
1
Q: Find files that does not contain a string

namTo find all the files that contain "foo" in current folder, I use: grep -r "foo" . To find all the files that contain "bar" in current folder, I use: grep -r "bar" . But how to find all files that does not contain 'foo' and 'bar'?

@Achu that's "printing" lines. This will always return 0, so it won't work for testing with if.
@foss, thanks, -L is what I needed.
Actually no, it doesn't work.
It just suppresses the output.
sed 's/active = no/active = yes/' $AUDISP
if "active = yes" is not there; then
echo something and exit
else
continue with the script
How do I do that?
13:20
@Alaa i remember using -v with grep
let me read the question to get an idea.
13:44
HELLO IS ANYBODY ACTIVE HERE
Woah, why are you yelling at us?
I have issue in connecting wireless connection, In Windows Security type is WPA- PERSONALAES but here in ubuntu 12.04 when I setting my wireless connection then there are Security type is WPA &WPA2 PERSONAL. So I set that and set required password. But by this my connection is not connected. So if Possible then please help me. Lots of Thanks for any suggestion.
@ArvindGangwar WPA & WPA2 passwords are case-sensitive - make sure you get the case correct - e.g. all uppercase/lowercase etc.
@fossfreedom Thanks for fast help, but password is numeric only no alphabets or no any special character. I checked it to many time, but not succeed.
any error messages displayed?
14:01
NO, but it only showed that Password or encryption keys are required to access the wireless network 'MTNL' with text-box which contains password and after some time it displayed message that you are disconnected to wireless MTNL network
@Alaa hehehehe, only I got 20 review! MUAHAHAHAHAHA
@ArvindGangwar temporarily remove the security of your router (make it unsecured) - can you connect then?
ok, I will try for that

Could anyone mark this a dupe and delete the answer askubuntu.com/q/347459/169736 ?
@Braiam the answer may be the same but the questions are different
> I may have uninstalled linux-image-xxx
I think they are the same :(
wait
hmm
procedure is the same to solve it... read the last op comment in the answer
ok - you are correct :)
done
15:47
Someone please close and delete this:
@fossfreedom Thanks :)
@foss should we make the same guy post an answer here about this question or should we close it? askubuntu.com/q/348282/169736
In these cases we can (and often do) post the answer ourselves (copy and paste) - dont forget to CW it since it isnt really your work. Indicate in the answer the source and that the OP indicates this was the solution for him/her.
it seems relevant to ubuntu
so no real reason to close
yeah, I have the same guy in chat in UL he seems to going copy paste the answer

and with that - time to go home. bbl
I mean the one that answered the question
Damn Acid Bases and Salts seems tough

@Oli Thanks! Now I see how does it works.
17:48
@JorgeCastro How are you?
You are an IRC user, right?
#ubuntu
An what software do you use?
A simple web browser?
I use weechat
17:57
I'm deciding between Irssi and Xchat
weechat is nicer than irssi imo
It seems :)
> WeeChat is a fast, light and extensible chat client.
I guess that you cannot establish a DCC connection. Am I wrong?
Because I want to transfer files :S
it should
I don't use dcc so I am not sure, I assume all clients support dcc though
Oh, then I guess I will try it :D
Yeah, I don't know very much about it.
18:01
Just started asking yesterday how does it works. And it seems to be great
@Lucio there ^
DCC
Where did you get it?
Mheheheh .. It is at the bottom of the page
That is like to be in China
@JorgeCastro Thank you! I will find you on #ubuntu soon :P
I haven't seen Jorge there... again that channel has +800 users all times... is a wonder you can find someone...
18:19
I don't really use #ubuntu
jrg
jrg
19:19
most people don't...
mostly because it's just so busy.
that entire channel seems worthless to me
sometimes is impossible to read... :/
@Braiam whats your irc nick? and you should add 1000 to your count :-)
It's quite helpful never the less. Not to mention 50 times faster than AU chat usually ;)
I find most of the information there incorrect
jrg
jrg
19:35
that too.
@guntbert same as here... but I'm trying to stay clear any IRC-ish bussines...
I didn't want to create such a discussion xD
@Braiam no worries, I won't call you out there :-)
@Lucio why not? ;-)
I wasn't talking about #ubuntu
@JorgeCastro That is one advantage of the SE way of doing things.
19:40
through in IRC you can skip the whole XY problem...
Wasn't there one of those where we weren't... Communist?
the noob desert...
@Seth Yeah, but we were Republicans :/

It's amusing that archland is so small but still exists. Makes you wonder some things.
20:27
is there a place to ask for a binary to be included in std iso? i think gdisk should def be on the iso now that gpt is getting common. i don't see any sensible person disagreeing. i mean it's a tiny utility
@Lucio Well I don't think we're really either of those...
@Lucio I love the Isle of Mark in that one though XD

i'm spending a lot of time off in the debian republic these days.
I'm not going to say "I use Debian",
i'm going to say "I have been sojourning in The Debian Republic."
or "I have been exploring The Great Compile".
BECAUSE MAPS.
4
debian makes sense for lots of things, but i don't think the users i want to target are actually smart enough to use anything other than "i pushed the button and it works" which isn't debian. i'm trying to transition to freebsd in earnest, to the tune of already dual booting - but my wireless card is supposed to get support in the 10.x release so...waiting.
@jrg u so funnyjrg
jrg
jrg
;P
I want a high-res version of that map to put on my wall... :P
@Braiam - WalMart runs on Windows with terminal services and some terminal menu system. They could probs save loads switching to linux, but the implementation cost is also probably prohibitive. We call it vendor lock...
@jrg so ocr it, convert to raster with rasterbator, blow it up, and put the text back?
i mean, what resolution would be enough?
jrg
jrg
dunno.
@hbdgaf @Braiam yeah, so vendor lock is something I fight every day.
trust me when I say this: You have to build it as an open system, and do your research. otherwise you don't have any control over it by the time it's done.
ok, time to reboot!
and head into the void of "Will my wireless card work". ;P
oh lord, what wireless card @jrg
mine is an ath9k supported card, it just needs ath9k. ath5 won't do it and freebsd is getting an update to their mac80211 layer in the latest bump from 9-10
21:34
/me waves
@jrg but that doesn't explain why I can't install it in my system! D:

Q: ecryptfs mounted via command line, what do I need to backup?

Matthias KauerI asked this question on the ecryptfs launchpad, but it expired there without answer. https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ecryptfs-utils/+question/235226 It might be trivial, but I really don't want to get it wrong for obvious reasons. On the other hand, the answers that I find are all ...

Speaking of wireless.. mine broke too. Which is why I had to "sojourn" in the Windows world for the time being.

@AskUbuntuMeta I like that guy's attitude!
If it is ranty, it's ranty in a nice way.
lol.
It's nice when devs of a serious product can take the time to be humorous.
