Q: Vote to close specifics

fixit7I would like to learn about the vote to close. As I understand it, it is a moderator who does so. Does it only take one moderator to make that decision? Is there a link that shows all the particulars.

Hi
what could be the reason only first line is getting tabbed?
if [[ ! ${#pevarray[@]} -eq 0 ]]
        then
                for pevvar in "${pevarray[@]}"; do echo -e "\t$pevvar"; done
        fi

9:09 AM
@aderchox what do you mean with “get tabbed”?

@dessert I mean when multiple lines are echoed, only first one has been affected by "\t" in the beginning of it

echoed where, and how? which tab character?

more precisely here: for .... in .... do echo -e "\t$pevvar"; done
the "\t" behind $pevvar
I hope it's still not vague?

9:36 AM
@aderchox I think you need a question on the site and elaboteate a bit more.
Then post the link to your question here.

sorry, I drew a mental blank there :) so /t is only printed for the first array value?

Q: Can't log in to Ubuntu

BismaI had a c++ program which creates .data files . I accidentally clicked it's executable file directly instead of running it through an IDE . it kept on making files without opening any console .The system was hanged and I turned it off by pushing the power button . Now every time I try to login it...

try that:
if [[ ! ${#pevarray[@]} -eq 0 ]]; then printf '\t%s\n' "${pevarray[@]}"; fi

@dessert this is what I come to suggest, the printf

@Fabby thanks but I thought that was too simple to be a question.
@dessert weird but still only first line is affected

9:41 AM
try it without the quotes:
if [[ ! ${#pevarray[@]} -eq 0 ]]; then printf '\t%s\n' ${pevarray[@]}; fi

@aderchox Post a question and provide the contents of the variables.

@dessert now it's working :| why?

because "${pevarray[@]}" wraps everything in quotes, thus it’s handled as one argument
this shouldn’t happen with @ though – are you using bash?
which version?

@dessert yes. GNU bash, version 4.4.19(1)-release (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu)

${array[@]}" should give "a", "b" and so on – individually quoted as one wants it in most of the cases

9:58 AM
@aderchox what does this give on your machine?
$ array=(a b c)&&printf '\t%s\n' "${array[@]}"
    a
    b
    c

    a
    b
    c
@dessert this

well, then it’s your array data that’s the problem :)
if this works prepending every element with a tab, if [[ ! ${#pevarray[@]} -eq 0 ]]; then printf '\t%s\n' "${pevarray[@]}"; fi does the same – look into the content of $pevarray to dig further.
(btw: your approach with a for loop and echo is totally fine as well! one could call the printf way simpler and easier to read, but it’s merely a matter of taste.)

@dessert yes right
@dessert thanks

Vote to close can't reproduce. OP hasn't signed on in nearly 6 years: askubuntu.com/questions/350485/…

3:48 PM
@Fabby Need two votes before grace period ends. OP hasn't signed on for two days to award bounty. I think my answer is best. I hate to see a bounty go to waste. Optionally you can post an answer and I could vote for it: askubuntu.com/questions/1156181/…
@Kulfy ^^^ and anyone else in room same offer with you guys.

I voted for both answers so it won't be injustice with the other answer

4:06 PM
@Kulfy Sounds fair. Thanks!

What flag does one use when a new short answer is already included in an existing 179 upvoted answer? askubuntu.com/a/1158230/307523

@WinEunuuchs2Unix +1
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Downvote and cast delete flag after leaving comment.
Now you only have to cast a delete flag.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix You can give N0rbert's self answered question's reference if it helps.

Q: How to install HPLIP on my Ubuntu to support my HP printer and/or scanner?

N0rbertLet's assume that one has some HP printer and/or scanner and checked its support status on the corresponding page of HPLIP site - HP Developer Portal | All Supported Printer Models. So one have the following information: the device Model name, Min. HPLIP Version and Driver Plug-in need. What s...

@Kulfy Onnly after bounty has ended cc @WinEunuuchs2Unix

@Fabby How would that make any difference? Just asking.

@Kulfy Try: once a bounty has been opened, you cannot close the question any more.
(duplicate, off-topic, ... Nothing works)
until after bounty has been awarded.

@Fabby I think you got me wrong. I wasn't asking WinEunuuchs2Unix to cast dupe vote but to add N0rbert's question link in their answer to install HPLIP only if it's relevant.

5:26 PM
:D Aaaaah!
I geddir!

@Fabby What does that word mean ?

@Fabby :v:

Vote to close OP hasn't signed on in a year: askubuntu.com/questions/853565/…

@WinEunuuchs2Unix OP has self-answered the question. I upvoted that instead.

@TheLittleNaruto I get it.

5:36 PM
@Fabby Does it pronounce same way as "I get it" ?

r and t are next to each other on the keyboard.

<Just want to confirm>

@Kulfy Thanks, adding N0rbert's self-answered question is a good idea.

@TheLittleNaruto If you pronounce it quickl: Yes!

@Fabby Thanks for upvote :)

@Fabby Wakarimashtha

@TheLittleNaruto Hai

@TheLittleNaruto You a Japanese Hindu?

@Fabby I am an Otaku

5:39 PM
@TheLittleNaruto Japanese or not?

@Fabby With God grace; No!

OK, just checking...
P.S.:

God doesn't care whether you're Japanese ;)

@Fabby mine is 91 :(
@ByteCommander heh

Anyone is from England or New Zealand here ?

Nope, not on-line...

@Fabby is close to england!

Hmm Both countries are playing World cup final right now.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I'm not from neither in England...

5:44 PM
New Zealand on the other hand is not close to England :P
@Fabby You are closer to England than New Zealand is though :P

@TheLittleNaruto World Cup what? Drinking???

@Fabby ICC Cricket World cup 2019

They've trained crickets to do sports? Awesome must be harder than training horses to race on a track.

^^
@Fabby lol

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Lol. Not cricket but cricket

5:51 PM
@Kulfy Although I only watch ice hockey, I'm familiar with cricket, lacrosse, baseball and all those other sports. I was just making a joke :P

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Oh I see. AFAIK very less Americans are familiar with Cricket.

@Kulfy I watch international affairs though so when there is unrest in say Pakistan over cricket I learn about the game as a side effect.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Yeah just throwing away their televisions

Anyone every use one of those roll up / roll out rubber keyboards? Do they have track pads built in?

6:15 PM
Vote to close as too broad but the whole question is rather inflammatory in nature: askubuntu.com/questions/1158241/btcore-or-bluez

6:52 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix yes and I have yet to see one with a trackpad.
I saw 2 with a poke. that was the hype before trackpads
@TheLittleNaruto watching it now. and no I am also not from either

7:15 PM
@Rinzwind I've noticed rollup keyboards are bundled with mini trackballs which is probably the only super portable option for a rasprberry pi 4. Um except the $25 touch screen option of course!

8:13 PM
Voting as not reproducible. Question three years old, OP didn't touch it for two years and hasn't signed on for a year: askubuntu.com/questions/765459/…

I would rather say this counts as “went away on its own”, but either way… :)

Q: why run service as a system user?

ScipioAfricanusI have a general question about the unix world. I am currently running ubuntu at home and installed transmission on a device and it runs as and saves files as transmission-debian user. I am wondering if it makes sense for me to change this to my own user so it easier to interact with files and I ...
