Q: What directions, initiatives, and innovations the Ubuntu Project as a whole pursuing as of 2019?

AkivaMy perspective on things (You can skip) My initial draw to Ubuntu had to do partly with the enigmatic character and vision of Mark Shuttleworth. I really bought into his vision, code of conduct, and was excited for all the things he wanted to innovate upon. Ive been with him pretty much 100% of ...

@Tooniis Someone gave you an Ubuntu way of doing it without EFI shell.
If that works: great!
if it doesn't: ping me again.

8:12 AM
Good morning @Fabby
=)

@Benny Good afternoon...

:) yea

:-) Good morning here though... ;-)

9:00 AM
@Fabby Nice answer +1. I had to dig up my past low quality posts review history to see the post (PS: Still a <10k rep. user :/).
You might like to add terdon's comment for context.
@Fabby See questioner is here (@JJoao)

@Kulfy Huh? Which comment where?
P.S. Minty question got re-opened and answered, but already had another 3 close votes against it...

@Fabby from here to here

@Kulfy added reference below his question for clarification.
Thank for the tip!

I'm not sure if it would be legit but I'll suggest adding link of the review instead of answer so that <10k rep. user can also have a look

@fabby, just to tell that although I hate deleters, I love Yoda quoters.

@JJoao IMO they should be hated if they delete something without any canonical reason.

@Kuffy, my answer is not important: go ahead and delete it. But in fact it works,
And it has a (poor) tentative of explanation.
And IMO the system should at least send a message saying that your answer has been deleted.

@JJoao I think its been asked for and .... somewhat unlikely to happen
Probably might poke around main meta for an explaination if I have the energy.

@JJoao Starred!
And you were afraid you lost your answer so fear lead to hate...
:D:D :D
@JJoao A lot of people agree, (as do I) but the Stack Exchange people don't want to.
Having said that, there is a way to see all your deleted questions / Answers by using SQL once you reach 20K rep.
By then you've stopped worrying about it.

actually
you can always see a post you posted if its deleted
and there's a recently deleted post page in your profile?

@JourneymanGeek yes.
Is there?
Like I said: I stopped worrying about it: had a look once when I had access to the data stuff.
@JJoao What does your avatar mean???
(Tower of basilica in Braga???)

9:27 AM
@Fabby It had no effect. It completely ignored it. I've already commented on the answer so OP knows

@Tooniis OK, so you need to dig down into the bowels of EFI.
are you comfortable with command-lines?

sure

OK, so you need to install rEFInd: that is an EFI Boot Loader.

will do that
I have it installed on my other laptop

Then you also need to install an EFI shell:

9:31 AM
@fabby, almost there tradicional portuguese Clraraboias: pinterest.pt/pin/689332286688290410

and rEFInd will recognize it and add it to its boot menu
then just use the EFI shell commands to move GRUB to the first position and reboot from the EFI shell.
@Tooniis and that's it!
Not rocket science, but not for the leyman neither.
If you post your own answer, I'll come back and upvote.
@JJoao Pinterest doesn't like no cookies
And it's called a Skylight in English
So basically your avatar is an Ubuntu-themed skylight!
Cool!

9:51 AM
@Fabby in the EFI shell, bcfg boot dump -v shows rEFInd as first in the sequenc, followed by ubuntu then Windows Boot Manager
yet it still boots straight into Windows
that site you provided has some troubleshooting methods for this specific issue so I'll try those

10:17 AM
none of those worked

Q: Setup .pkla rule for polkit

plazmakeksI'd like to start a systemd service using DBus in one of my apps which is run as non-root user myuser. For that I need to set up a PolicyKit where I'm using polkit 0.105 and added the following .pkla file to /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d Identity=unix-user:myuser Action=org.freedesktop...

I tried to replace /efi/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi with /efi/Boot/bootx64.efi, but it just went into a boot loop
I undid my changes already

@Tooniis OK, seems like you have a problem I've never encountered.
Seeing what you did already and are capable of doing: 2 last straws I can throw to you:
Upgrade EFI firmware from Lenovo (you probably did this already)
On my Acer, I had to enable a superuser password to be able to do advanced stuff.
After I turned it off, the advanced stuff I did stuck though.

yes I di the upgrade akready
already*

@Tooniis And that's it: no further great advice: I'm stumped now
File a bug at Lenovo???

10:27 AM
Possible
Maybe I should wait for an answer on the question I put in superuser
there's already someone asking for additional input

Unless he's called Rod Smith, I think you're out of luck: there are very few people who know a lot about UEFI.
But: I wish you luck anyway!

Rod Smith hangs out on SU sometimes

0:-)
@Tooniis Did you try adding a supervisor / admin / ... whatever it's called on Lenovo password?

11:02 AM
@Fabby you mean the password I can set in the UEFI settings? I didn't try to do that, and I don't know how it would help, but I'll try it anyway

11:25 AM
@Fabby someone posted an answer that fixed it for me
it was about replacing bootmgfw.efi with grubx64.efi

12:18 PM
@Tooniis Cool!!!

Q: Slow ethernet, fast wifi

embradleyI'm running a Lenovo Legion Y7000P with Pop OS 18.04. My ISP is AT&T. My WiFi tests at about 20Mbps down, 5Mbps up, but my ethernet-over-power set, which is rated for 600Mbps up/down, only gets 10Mbps down, 6Mbps up, and my other laptop can easily reach 30Mbps down, so I doubt it's the network of...

@JJoao I didn't know about that. I used to think that OP is notified by an automated notification. Sometimes SE is strange.

4:36 PM
Any idea why there are so many Pop!_OS questions posted in recently?

Hi, why is it that when I do gcc foo.c -o foo
and then readelf -a foo
it says the type is shared object and not executable?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix It is indeed!

@Fabby BTW I went with Sunday as the week ending date like you suggested. Just found out my BASH script can crash the whole desktop such that only the mouse pointer can move.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix :D :D :D Fork Bomb!!!
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I forgot you North Americans start the week on Sunday!

@Fabby I'm taking vacation next month. Tonight I'm just relaxing at home after week of work. Writing the gmail backup program believe it or not helps me relax at home.

Yeah, true: your line of work is so different from programming, that: Yes, I believe you!
