2:51 AM
I mess with Ubuntu for a couple months have it do what I need it to server wise then simply return back to Windows/Mac for regular development stuff.

Is there a feasible way to essentially just download a .img file of an already working Ubuntu distribution?

Pretty much any default would work fine for me but i spend most of my time every couple months burning it to a thumb drive and then waiting for the installation to work/finish.

@William There are full working IMG available on the net, but if I where you I would refrain from using those, they are third party in almost all cases and you never know if and what kind of back-doors you install with them. There are ways to create your own custom installers and you should definitively look into this.

Q: Hard Drive .img of Ubuntu

WilliamIs there a feasible way to essentially just download a .img file of an already working Ubuntu distribution that I can write directly to my hard drive? Pretty much any default would work fine for me but i spend most of my time every couple months burning it to a thumb drive and then waiting for t...

Thank you Videonauth
I had hoped there was an "official" .img already packaged
I am trying to avoid creating my own custom for exactly this reason

@William well when you create your own custom you actually can be very sure you only have what you want and no backdoors. Ubuntu as it is as default install is pretty secure.

ah yes I have near 100% faith in default ubuntu install
I just I am trying to save time on my end
maybe I can boot the iso in virtualbox and write it directly to a usb plugged in hard drive or something

well bymaking your own custom you spend the time only once, there are definetively ways to create an iso file which is a full installation,

3:06 AM
?
I'm not really sure if my question was clear

install it on a normal machine and you can even use build in tools to create an iso file which you could play onto other drives as image
all you need is a second drive where you can save it on

the default installation is fine
in fact the menu options are fine
its the time it takes to burn to thumb drive and then to a hard drive that is the issue

well you have that with windows as well

yes but I am running the same windows from literally 2010
packages and updates install fine
my ubuntu box is over here complaining
that hasn't been touched since almost then that the package updates are no longer available

you can use dd to create a full fledged image from an exisiting installation:

3:09 AM
yes hence why I am requesting a .img file

lets say you have your ubuntu instalaltion on drive sda and you have space on a drive sdb to have a full image of said drive sda

@Videonauth I'm pinging you because up until this point you have failed to provide any information that solves the issues I am having

`dd if=/dev/sda of=/targetdirectory/image.iso bs=1M

please stop
in fact everything you have told me I was aware of
you answer about custom installs I was aware of also

well then i shut up, no clue what youre really requesting
when you want it secure you need to do it yourself, I for myself would never use third party images
period.

3:12 AM
I agree with that unless the ubuntu foundation is releasing them
oh debian maybe

fact is neither canonical nor the debian tem can provide images of fully installed systems, it is simply not feasible, hence the installer cd/USB files
an install what would be good for you is maybe not good for someone else

go on why not?
password user be the same?
for all these systems?

example server, maybe i need nginx as server, and the image provides apache
same passwords as well (which is a secondary concern as you can change them easily)

the image would just create a bootable hard drive

maybe the install provides php mysql and i not need php at all and want mariaDB etc etc

3:17 AM
just force them to change user name and password at login

linux is so good because there always many many ways to achieve your goals which would make the amount of images to profide for evey use case almost infinite

just make it identical to the ubuntu.iso install

on top of that alone the kernel options to chose from

currently
it boots into a live cd

yes and what keeps you from making an iso on your own?

3:19 AM
time

thats the question i ask myself actually :)

right now despite having direct access to the hard drive using sata
I have to burn it to USB then install
there are 2 writes there we only 1 is really necessary
I have an idea of using virtualbox but I am not sure if it would work honestly
what ubuntu version has a proper windows xp like window manager?

I think i can't follow you on that question

I want a taskbar with window names at the bottom instead of a dock

try dash2dock it gives you plenty of customization options

3:23 AM
xubuntu looks decent

the default dock provided with ubuntu 18.04 onward is somewhat limited down

sudo apt install dash2dock ?

your on gnome desktop right now?

lol Windows 10 & Ubuntu 16
yes 16

gnome-shell-extension-dashtodock - dash-to-dock extension for GNOME shell
thats the package name

3:25 AM
how did you find this honestly?

┌─[05:23:57]─[michael@NEXUS-ONE]
└──> downloads $ apt-cache search dashtodock
gnome-shell-extension-dashtodock - dash-to-dock extension for GNOME shell

I don't want a dock though
I'll have to test out the package but I am guessing that its a dock configuration tool
linux mint is close
enough and xubuntu
can any distro have access to the ubuntu software center

they can but they are somehhow as well a bit different
here is how my three screen desktop looks like (as soon i full screen open something the dock is gone.

cool but i'll be honest
of everything apple has given us the dock is the worst of them
in my opinion
I'll send a picture of mine in a second maybe

i use the dock like i used the windows windows bar to be honest, just that i not have names anymore, only symbols of my most used programms, i had them pinned in windows too

3:33 AM
here is mine
I was going to post the xp photo but changed my mind
actually words and names at the bottom of the screen.

well im now using linux only since 2 yrs and 8 months but never ever would change back to windows :)

yeah and I'll never change back to linux until they have a sensible default window manager
I used Ubuntu for probably 3 years
solely
but this was back in the 10.04 days I think it was
I didn't care for the 2 taskbars but absolutely love its interface over what we have now

lol got a good laugh
except the only feature I want is the actual text at the bottom for each window
I could care less what it looks like in reality

well there are ways to achieve that
have a look around the page

3:45 AM
yeah xubuntu is the easiest way
okay different question no

i myself despite having names down there because it would overflow my list down there

now
okay
how do I store all updates in a way so that they are installable later?
so for example let say I want to recreate the system I have now but 10 years from now

create an image from your install

no
I want the packages
I might pick and choose what I want later
packages are better because if you software works with old packages but not new
you can simply install it from the old one

dpkg -l | grep ii
lists all packages with their current version
all installed packages
dpkg -l alone lists everything even dormant stuff

3:52 AM
yes but packages aren't always stored fror ever

which is not preseeded by ii at then
you could download them with apt download <name>

does that work for updates also?
like system updates

as long you got the package names yes

lol okay then how do I get the package names for system updates that have yet to be installed?

for name in $(dpkg -l | grep 'ii' | awk '{print $2;}'); do apt download $name; done
would download all actuall installed packages

3:56 AM
well thank you it is night here
I have written down most of what we talked about

5:56 am here :) just finished my first coffee

Q: Slow boot time in Ubuntu 18.04

Deepayan PalI am using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and I check for updates everyday. I am a newbie to Linux. Everything is good except the boot time. Windows 10 booted up much faster than this. My systemd-analyze blame output is: 34.632s dev-sda1.device 28.873s systemd-journal-flush.service 25.479s app...

Q: adduser Firstname.Lastname

pietro lettiI tried to use both useradd and adduser to get a username typed as Firstname.Lastname. I tried also installing libuser and using luseradd, but also I got error. Is there a way to do that (of course it should be)? I'm trying to write a script that takes a list of users from a file and creates the ...

5:26 AM
@Videonauth Still awake or already awake?

5:47 AM
@Fabby :) still awake
and already awake

You haven't slept at all?
Bad for your health! Sleep is more important than AU!
0:-) ;-)

@Fabby well you know i suffer from insomnia
:) havn't slept since three days now this evening i will take medication for having a nights sleep

6:08 AM
:O :O :O
I knew you suffered from insomnia but didn't know it was that bad...

you not get pensioned of minor sleep deprivation ;)
it's, yeah it's bad
imagine youre tired and lay down but always you body does not go into sleep mode

You should run for president, because with 1 night of sleep every day, you're ahead of the rest of the world!
;-) :-)

@Videonauth better than the folks who enjoy it

@Videonauth least for me lifestyle changes helped.

6:11 AM
yes I do

(I got a dog. Who believed strongly that if he went to bed at 10.30 EVERYONE WENT TO BED AT 10.30)

@JourneymanGeek hahaha :)
i got a cat who starts meowing badly if im still up at 1am and beyond

(I also cut back on caffeine. Exercise helps some people...)

so i lay down at least to let my body rest even if i can'T sleep
its part of my other sufferings tho

6:14 AM
so even a calm lifestyle with sports and so on won't change it

ptsd, depressions, agoraphobia, anxiousness, panik attacks and insomnia

I've had a chunk of those
I wish I could aay there was some single thing that worked, but all I can say is "sorry dude, I've been there and it sucks"

yes i agree :) i rather would love to work something

I did cut waaaay back on caffeine

6:18 AM
best in complete homeoffice, but sadly those jobÄS are very rare and you need to show up at those companys at least fpr applying

but that was kind of a symtom as much as...
ah, ya

me too, max 2 cups per day

One cup with milk unless I'm working nights
Used to down a lot of cola

:)
i drink only unsugared multivitamine
completely unsugared tho

now its mostly water, and I need to drink more of that

6:22 AM
not even replacements
my dieabetes forbids cola in most occasions

ah ya
I have a family history of that

still i have every month a few bottles in my cooler for cases of hypoglucamia

ya, my dad has emergency candy for that situation

best and fastes working is nutella, believe it or not
one teaspoon full is enough to get my bloodsugar from 60 to about 200

6:36 AM
makes sense ;)

1 hour later…
7:55 AM
pomsky and I voted to close it as no-repro, because OP rebooted a couple of times and voila
but as a dupe, that question which has no relation to the other one
and no useful info of its own will probably last forever D:

hmm
I can't remember, wouldn't that get roombaed

no
dupes never ever get roomba'd if they have answers
dupes only get roomba'd if they meet the criteria for open questions to get roomba'd
as no-repro it would get roomba'd

I guess it's not very well known in what circumstances posts get deleted

eh its documented
I just can't remember it all all the time ;)

8:01 AM
@JourneymanGeek yes :) but it's quite complicated
@JourneymanGeek sure, but I mean in general, people are not aware. They don't think about it when voting to close

going to go elsewhere and try to calm down haha

that helps lol

@Zanna well then, let’s VTR and VTC as non-repro

I'm watching forged in fire ;)

8:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek what's that?

@Zanna series where people make knives and swords

@dessert would be nice but I doubt I'll find 10 reviewers for that project :/

though this episode's tests are a wee bit gruesome ._.

@JourneymanGeek oooh documentary? gotta be interesting

@Zanna imagine something like masterchef
but people make edged weapons.

8:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek if only there were no weapon more deadly than those :)

(some of the tests are on, well dead animals so... I fast forward through those ;) )
@Zanna or no need for weapons at all ;)

yeah sounds disgusting
@JourneymanGeek yeaahhhh

worth the warning, I remember you're vegan so...

but I guess I need weapons against potatoes and their friends
and especially squashes

hah
few of ours are metal these days
<3 ceramic blades

8:07 AM
oooh nice!

and cheapie knives cause my dad's... a bit hard on them

I don't think I have any cookware that's actually any good, apart from a few nice silicon stirrers and mats and brushes
long time since I had my own place :.(

I'm actually in the "few but better" camp
but things... accumilate, and I live with my parents ;)

yeah
that philosophy is good for everything
I live with my parents too

Well, I think I can move out after april, though there's a few things to line up first.

8:09 AM
space is very limited
some of my cookware is in a box in the garage

oh its almost all in the kitchen ;)

and I refuse to buy new things that I already have in the garage XD

But if I need to cook, I need ... 4 things...

@JourneymanGeek I remember you mentioning haha

a cutting board (we actually have a place with professional grade gear, so... its like an inch or two thick, none of those weak thin ones), a knife, a saucepan and a fry pan ;)

8:11 AM
what will you stir with?

(mom prefers an indian style wok...)
hm... true.
5 things? ;p
non stick spatula or "dosai thiruppi"

oooh there's a special device for that eh?

If I want to be fancy, I actually have a iron tempering spoon, useful both for tempering, and self defence"

lol XD

the thing on top
there's a western equivilent to that
though that griddle should be flat. ._.

8:15 AM
haha I definitely can't make தோசை with any of the pans I have here. It sticks terribadly

ah
the traditional one's cast iron
you absolutely need to season it
I've managed to make it with non stick once but...
you can't get a paper roast.

@JourneymanGeek yeah... lot of effort

lol
not if its already seasoned

:)

and tbh, y'all baby your cast iron, and have it to a science ;)

8:17 AM
my family doesn't have any fancy stuff like that
although my mum bought me a tiny cast iron pan
which I haven't used at all
right now I'l trying to smoke tofu

we season it by using it ;)
"Its sticking. MORE OIL!"

sounds like a good plan...

(as opposed to " be need to use linseed oil and bake it for exactly 24 minutes at exactly 159 degrees under a full moon while standing on one leg....")

this one my mum bought me says something about wrapping it in foil on the label
I'm like, what necromancy is this?
I'm daunted by all this wizardry
nobody's ever taught me to cook hahaha
arcane knowledge XD

@Zanna we consider it an essential life skill ;)

8:25 AM
that's obviously the right attitude

I do cook by instinct and smell more than 'classical' cooking tho

:)
I don't know what I'm doing but I keep working at it XD

that works

@JourneymanGeek கல்லு is stone?

(sadly, while my "culture" is fairly famous for our cooking skill, a lot of folks of both genders don't bother any more)
@Zanna in a literal sense, yeah
actually its just கல்
there's some funny unwritten gramattical rule for saying kallu over kall ;p

8:32 AM
lots of words seem to do that
@JourneymanGeek like "pizza stone"

oddly enough

which is not a stone afaik but some sort of flat device for baking pizza on

I'm trying to get a square dosa kall to use in the oven as a pizza stone...
Well, actually
there's granite pizza stones and pizza steels
But ya, the best english translation I think is griddle ;)

I don't think I need to translate that. It can be what it is and have its purpose
according to the recipes I have, I am supposed to bake naan on a pizza stone

0_0
makes sense? or use a griddle ;p
but we don't really have proper ovens in the south

8:35 AM
but it works pretty ok on baking sheets shrug

ah, guess you just have enough heat

I guess I am happy if the result is not perfect as long as I enjoy eating it haha

lol
quite

@JourneymanGeek hence no naan I guess
that stuff is very popular here. You can buy some preservative-loaded vacuum packed versions in supermarkets.
but I never buy bread of any kind haha I guess I like making work for myself

12:13 PM
I have a small ubuntu question (that is probably already asked again, but hard to find) How do I change my keyboard layout that pressing 1 time " makes it a dead key (so nothing is printed till another key is pressed like space), but pressing it 2 times gives me "" ( I tried "English (US, intl with dead keys)" but this gives me ¨ and "English (US, intl with ALTGR dead keys)" doesn't have the normal dead key behaviour, but I can press "" 2 times
Basically, I want the keyboard how windows normally does it

What do you mean by pressing twice gives ""? What character/symbol are we talking about?

if I press ", release ", press ", release " I get ¨
I expect ""
(on the US international with dead keys keyboard layout

12:29 PM
You mean the usual "double" quotes? Pressing it once should do nothing but pressing it twice should yield two double quotes? That's weird.

What keyboard layout do you use? Maybe I selected the wrong one

German. Probably not what you want.

12:46 PM
@Ferrybig On US International you need to do "[space]"[space] to get ""
"" gives ¨

Is there a way to prevent that? SO I don need the extra spaces?

No, unless you go dig into the bowels of keyboard management and make your own keymap
look for "personalsed keyboard mapping"
take a language that does not exist like XX YY or ZZ.

Thanx for the advice, I found a a tutorial on the internet explaining it, will try it

@Ferrybig Can you ask a question on the site now so I can get a bit of rep out of helping you?

ok

12:52 PM
@Fabby LOL, as if you needed it…

@PerlDuck Well no...
But otherwise people drop into chat asking for help instead of posting a question.
If they don't post a question after being helped, they get nailed to the star wall as "Help Vampire".
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Fabby Yes, that's a valid argument.

Q: How to make the double quote behave as a dead key expect when it is used in combination with itself

thanks! Just saw it show up...
@Ferrybig Apparently it's a duplicate question, so no rep for me!
;-)
@Ferrybig but still +5 for you!!!

1:07 PM
@Fabby I just found this question, by random exploring the site by following the relevant tab, it asks, just like me, to also remove a certain alias from the keymap. Too bad it doesn't have an answer

Thannks! Voted as dupe of the other one as well.

@Fabby I'm testing the other answer at the moment, to see if it works, if it works I will press the button so it instantly gets closed

@Ferrybig Cool!

Thanks again for your help

1:17 PM
@Fabby I'm happy to see @Ferrybig is a 12k user so he probably knows how the wind blows. A 1rep user might be disappointed when asked to pose a question just to see it gets dupe-closed. ;-)

@PerlDuck Well, the dupe is better than what I told him to do so...
(less work and if it doesn't work, he'll get a customised answer out of it)

@PerlDuck :)

@Fabby Yes, no offense. tbh, I didn't fully understand the question because my keyboard works as I expect and didn't spent too much time in investigating further. But that's neither your nor Ferrybig's fault.

I knew exactly what he was talking about...
Luckily this is Linux and not Windows, or he'd be stuck with default...

I never had the idea that the double quote key can or should mean anything else than a … double quote.

1:23 PM
That's the whole point: he wants a double quote, not an Umlaut.

I just press shift+2 to get it. :-P

QWERTZ: yes, US International: no.
AZERTY = French, QWERTZ = German, QWERTY US International: most EU languages.

LOL, that's just because the French cannot pronounce QWERTZ properly, so they chose something that sounds more common to them.
(I'm kidding, don't take me serious)

@PerlDuck try typing the old Dutch ÿ on a German keyboard.
@PerlDuck whereas the French keyboard allows you to type äëïöü without problems...

@Fabby I think this is going to be harder than it looks like, I need a key definition for an my apostrophe key, that works as a dead_acute when used with any other key, but produces 2 apostrophe when combined with itself

@Ferrybig Thinking...
@Ferrybig Wouldn't it be just easier to do [rightalt]2 as the apostrophe?
so keep the apostrophe as a dead key and then define apostrophe as [AltGr]2?
because under Linux it's a mapping, whereas under Windows it's a DLL.
In a DLL you can do anything as it's programmatically...
@Ferrybig Or the other way around?
remap [AtlGR]2 as the dead key and apostrophe as apostrophy?
(depending on which you need most???)

The problem is that I'm used to the behaviour of they under windows, and I use it 50% as a dead one, and 50% follwed by space when I don't want it to becode a dead one
