Q: ubuntu mate broken after uninstalling python

buckithedI'm using ubuntu mate 16.04. while debugging a python program, I found out that somehow I had two different installations of python2.7, so I accidentally uninstalled the version that my OS uses along with some important files. I rebooted and now I'm stuck in xfce, what would be the best way for m...

Q: CIFS VFS warning when transferring between NFS and CIFS

skymanI have a script running on Ubuntu 16 that is used to move text files from an NFS share to a CIFS share. As part of the process the CR/LF translation is undertaken to support consumption by a windows service that accesses the CIFS share. The Ubuntu console logs the following for each transfer: ...

Samsung - they design their tablets so well that they stop charging when CPU usage reaches 100% because they get too hot. eyeroll
I mean... that's still better than catching fire. But still.

I've been trying all evening to flash LineageOS to a Samsung tablet. :|
I am this close to succeeding.

@NathanOsman throttle seems like the right choice here.

Managed to get TWRP up and running...
Flashing LineageOS and Open GApps...
Rebooting...
Splash screen is displayed. That's a good sign.

Good grief.
That's copyright infringement.

How do I report that to Google?
This form looks kinda scary: support.google.com/legal/contact/…

@NathanOsman WHAT
Oh they seem to have a bunch of apps they pulled from various open source places with the package name changed (and their ads inserted)
And they didn't even optimize the proguard config right

@DavidFoerster LOL (sorry for the delayed reaction)

Q: How to shrink a partition below the minimum size reported by resize2fs?

heyo5388383I want to shrink a 250GB ext4 partition down to 200GB with resize2fs. "df" tool says the partition is about 40% filled up. So I guess I can at least shrink the partition to that level. Yet, when I try to shrink the partition with resize2fs, it fails. it says that the shrunk partition size is "s...

@terdon: Can you please review this edit suggestion to your own answer?

why do I have no .inputrc?
I assume terdon would get a notification about the suggested edit
but maybe not - like, we don't get notified when users with edit privileges make tiny edits to our posts (I consider this a terrible bug, but I'm sure it's by design)

You got me on this one @Zanna. I just answered a 5 yers old question. :-(((

A: Can startup applications be run on the login screen stack without logging in?

solsTiCeUser systemd service can run without the user to login. What is your ubuntu version ? Does it run systemd ? So the feature is called lingering and is enabled by running loginctl enable-linger yourusername Then you place your systemd .service file in ~/.config/systemd/user You could make a sh...

old questions are important. Every time I talk to people about Ask Ubuntu, they tell me they never need to ask a question because they find the information they need. Writing up-to-date answers to old questions is very valuable work.

that's a good question too. And TIL about lingering haha

I just installed emoji-keyboard and I can't use it here. Either doe snot work or froze the tab in browser :-(
@Zanna thanks to upvote me but there was no need ;-)

@DavidFoerster That's weird. I'm sure I had tested this since there is no way I would know what the keycode is without testing, so presumably it was a ? back then. Now, on my Arch, I got an H as the editor suggested.
Thanks!
@Zanna It isn't created by default. You have /etc/inputrc` instead

@terdon oh I see :) Thanks!

To chime in with @Zanna on the old questions are important part - it's a frequent complaint I hear from new users trying to boost their rep. That there are no unasked good questions, so people that were here in the first 2 years are automatically 20k+ rep and new people have a harder time getting started. So, yes. Old questions are important.
@solsTiCe ^^

@RobotHumans I am living proof that aint true :=D
what a users needs to do is get into a flow of 200 rep a day: get to 200 rep a day and then keep up with answering such you can guess you will reach 200 rep that day.

5:27 PM
@Rinzwind I didn't say it was true, just that the complaint speaks to the fact that a LOT of good questions are still relevant even though they're old.
I have a few answers that continue to pay dividends. My top 3 answers are all from 2012 or so.

whoa they're streaming AWS launchpad on twitch
this is awesome. more cons should do this

@RobotHumans I am getting on 928 with one from 2014 :-D almost 1000 <3

Q: Installation: which swap partition to use to install ArchLinux on my Ubuntu 16.04 laptop (without USB)?

frankI'm following this guide, which advises to run the following command: swapoff /dev/sdaX . I want to make sure I don't overwrite the wrong swap partition (please forgive any wrong terminology; I don't know what I'm doing). So basically, my question is: ==========================================...

Q: Get and use server ip address on bash

MiniFirst of all i am sorry if this is a noob question because i don't do sysadmin much and pretty new to this. I have this bash file that perfectly runs fine on each system i deploy but it needs to have server ip put in the command so it would work and i do enter it manually on each server but i was...

9:03 PM
@NathanOsman i needs halp

yes you do ;p

oh
ok
@Seth how much NodeJS do you know?

@TheWanderer None, really. I try not to use javascript as a backend if I can help it.

do you know PHP?

a little

9:06 PM
do you know enough to help me set something up that reads all the files in a certain path and adds elements to some HTML?

Node - grr. I had to use it some, and the extent of the php I worked with was simply javascript with promises inside php

@TheWanderer Not off the top of my head. Doesn't sound too hard to figure out.

alright

Although it is PHP so maybe that is a case of famous last words.

this is true
I need to actually get it set up first

9:07 PM
However I'm running out here in just a second.

I'll do some Googling

Make a room if you want with all the details then you can point people to it

Use Python
Django or Flask come to mind

Python?

You only need these two things to get it working: teamtreehouse.com/community/… and php.net/manual/en/function.scandir.php

9:08 PM
@ByteCommander The right answer, as always.

Always use Python

I prefer the reactjs/sanic/nginx stack

how do I use Python?

especially when the other options are PHP or Node

guys, I just want to read a damn directory

9:09 PM
So, backend is python. UI is client side.

@RobotHumans +1 for scandir. That looks good.

@TheWanderer see the two links

what is the easiest way to do that and append the contents to HTML?

Can't browsers show folders by default?

@TheWanderer and you picked PHP. I wasn't going to say anything but since Byte brought it up :P

9:09 PM
not client-side
@Seth idk what's available
I was using JS because I can't remember PHP syntax for more than 3 days

@TheWanderer technically you could use anything you want.

e.g. for python flask is pretty easy to setup (as Byte said). Go would be 1 binary. C# is possible. Java is possible. (although both waaay over the top)

Close Votes needed. OP trying to contact users here privately

The one benefit PHP might have is that you could put most of your logic inside your HTML file

9:14 PM
Depending on the way you set it up, you can do that in flask/django/sanic also. You just use jinja templates and code escapes.

Thanks!

Someone needs to make an account apertif. That way, when dessert votes to close, apertif can come in right after.

nice idea

Apéritif...
Sounds like a good user name!

I was just imagining how funny it would be to have a list of close voters, appetizer, soup and salad, main, dessert, aperitif. I think I'ld pee a little if I saw that.

9:25 PM
I should change both my user name and my avatar like @TheWanderer and then look hof long it takes people to recognize me again...

Didn't you used to be flabricorn?

@Fabby how in the world…? oO

@RobotHumans I used to be dnʞɔɐq ˙ɹW
@dessert Spammer testing out the waters?
Drunk?
Bored?
Just a kid playing a prank?
