@NathanOsman hey you around?
Disregard.

Disregarded.

2:35 AM
@L.D.James do-release-upgrade -d IIRC means, expanded: "do-release-upgrade -d if I remember/recall correctly"
where the courier new / code formatted text is the command
and IIRC after it is a separate statement about my recollection(s)

Thanks!

Q: Which VirtualBox guest extensions to use in Ubuntu 18.04?

Andreas UnterwegerThe VirtualBox manual states: [..] some Linux distributions already come with all or part of the VirtualBox Guest Additions. You may choose to keep the distribution's version of the Guest Additions but these are often not up to date and limited in functionality, so we recommend replacing them...

Q: how to resolve umount: it seems /dev/shm is mounted multiple times?

Kumar rajeshI am getting below error "umount: it seems /dev/shm is mounted multiple times" Here is output of $cat /proc/mounts: Please help me to resolve this.

10:33 AM
@solsTiCe, I am not sure if it's a bug, Why not post the question, supply link to the theme you download, give example why it looks different from expected, and the guys will be able to help you, but currently it's hard to guess the problem. I think it's better to post the question with more information

ok

Hi @PaddyLandau!
Welcome to the underbelly of Ask Ubuntu!

Hello Fabby. This is my very first visit!

@solsTiCe Wait till 18.04.1

I'm about to respond to your comment:

@PaddyLandau Yup! Bookmark the link

change linuxefi by linux and initrdefi by initrd in the answer @PaddyLandau P.S. Drop by in chatFabby 14 hours ago

11:31 AM
You can do that here... I'll remove my comment over there.

@Fabby thanks

I would appreciate you doing same as the Q&A is about UEFI only.

OK, I'll do that right now.

@PaddyLandau So any further questions / Remarks / Comments?

Yes. I'll explain…

11:32 AM
I had one: Are you a paddy? (I've been told it's a derogatory term, never to be used)
FYI: English is only my third or fourth language depending on how you count...

Um… Here in the UK, we say that someone is "in a paddy" to mean that they are currently in a bad temper. But I personally have never used it that way!
If English is your 3rd or 4th language, I commend you on your skill! I would not have guessed.

@PaddyLandau Ah, I was told a "paddy" is a Northern Irishman
So was someone trying to pull my leg?

"Paddy" is a typically Irish name, not just northern. I'm named after my Irish grandfather.
:)

:OK, so now for your questions... (I talk too much and don't listen enough.)

NP. I'm busy typing my question. I'm trying to not be too wordy :)
I haven't been able to get it to work on BIOS. I tried a number of things.

(1) As you said, just replace linuxefi with linux, and initrdefi with initrd.

(2) I opened the ISO with Archive Manager and saw that the only vmlinuz was /casper/vmlinuz.efi, and the only initrd was /casper/initrd.lz. So, I changed /live/vmlinuz to /casper/vmlinuz.efi, and /live/initrd.img to /casper/initrd.lz. This didn't look right, of course, and it failed with a kernel panic!

I tried a couple of other things, but nothing has worked.

11:37 AM
set paddy-mode = verbose.

Ha ha!

@PaddyLandau Yeah...
Haven't got that one to work neither yet.

Ah. So, specifically not Boot Repair?
I'll try out one of the Ubuntu ones to see how it works.

@PaddyLandau specifically indeed. µ

something weird. I made amistake in a shebang and use #/usr/bin/python. and a the cursor becomes a cross other my browser window. and now I discover a file called random which is a PS script file of a screenshot of my brwoser windows (because I click on the browser window with the arow cursor). Why is that ? what i the program run by mistake because of the wrong shebang ?

11:41 AM
@Fabby
Thanks. I'm going to make the changes, reboot, and see if it works :)
A couple of questions…
1. Was I on the right track by looking in the Archive Manager and seeing /casper?
2. I notice username=user. Should I change the user?

1. Yep (as per above)
2. I'm still debugging all those myself and will add another answer for the ones I got working.
Lubuntu gives a kernet panic too.
@solsTiCe Hard to say without sitting behind your computer.

Oh dear. Lubuntu was the next on my list!
Perhaps I'll wait until I've got a new computer with EFI (this one is getting slow now). I'll try again then.
@solsTiCe Which shebang did you intend to use?

@solsTiCe what's the output of /usr/bin/python --version?
@PaddyLandau this is the rest of my 40_custom:

ok. so because of the wrong shebang python was not use but a shell and run import random. which is some weird screen capture thing.It save it as random. that'all see stackoverflow.com/q/45849176/283067

11:47 AM
the correct shebang is #!/usr/bin/python with a ! not #/usr/bin/python

@PaddyLandau By that time, I'll have added the ones that I've got to work for my system.

just try import somefilename in your shell you will see it

It does work on BIOS systems: try gparted forst.

@Fabby thank you. I'm having a good look right now. I'll try Lubuntu, see what happens and let you know.

@PaddyLandau thank you... I haven't gotten it to work yet...
(still work in progress)

12:35 PM
@Fabby Lubuntu and Ubuntu both gave kernel panics. CloneZilla worked. There was one difference: I included "username=user". I have been Googling this, but I just can't find any documentation whatsoever about what this parameter means!

I can find the Grub manual
https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub/grub.html
But can I find anything about the parameter username? Not a chance!

12:57 PM
Oops, sorry, was eating.... Reading now.
@PaddyLandau Yup. I'm on the same learning curve as you...

NP — you're allowed to eat :)

Well, I'll just leave it for now. When I get a machine with EFI, I can try again. (My machine actually does support EFI, so I've discovered, but to use it I'd have to reinstall Linux again, which I really don't want to do.)

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

No worries!

hello ;-) QQ - is there any way to downgrade Ubuntu easily from 18.04 to 17.10?

@user1970395 No. Unfortunately downgrading is not supported. If you attempted it you would likely get, at best, a system consisting of some parts of 17.10 and some parts of 18.04. If you need to get back to an earlier release, reinstalling is the way to go. Make sure to have any important files, like documents, backed up.
Reinstalling might not require you to restore any of your files -- especially if you have a separate /home partition -- but I recommend having a backup -- of your documents, music, videos, whatever you wouldn't want to lose -- anyway, both in general and before performing such an operation.

that's bad news :-\
I upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04 and now I have no HW acceleration - thought of downgrading it somehow to bring it back to a desired state... seems like I'm out of luck

4:00 PM
@user1970395 Indeed. I wish downgrading were supported. It never has been though. Not in Debian either, if I understand correctly. It would be a big project to make it work reliably and safely, but perhaps that will get done some day. That won't help you right now though. :(
@user1970395 I suspect you may be able to fix the graphics problem in 18.04, if you want to try to do that.

@EliahKagan I've been trying for few hours now with no change

Is this the question you posted about it on the main site?

Q: Video playback performance issue Ubuntu 18.04

user1970395Since the upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04 (from 17.10) I started experiencing huge performance issues with video playback, both using VLC and the browser (Youtube). The problem gets more apparent the higher quality the video is (starts at 480p, 1080p is completely unwatchable). The video is choppy to sa...

yes, that's the question (it's not completely up-to-date I think, I've done some research and tried several things since then)

I recommend that you edit your question to include the full details of those new things you've tried and what happened.

I wish to remember all the things I've done :D

4:06 PM
Oh. Well, if you remember some of them, you could add the information about those.

@TheWanderer Could have at least gotten 7200RPM :/

nah
the only difference I've noticed with 7200 over 5400 is heat

Hm. I can notice the speed difference.

@EliahKagan done, not much, but better than nothing

Thanks.

4:15 PM
the 7200RPM laptop 2TB models are ridiculously expensive too @Seth

@TheWanderer true

like, it's literally double the price
it's a 25% performance boost too, if that

@user1970395 I think it may be useful if you were also to add the output produced by running:
ubuntu-drivers debug
I don't know much about troubleshooting problems with video drivers, though. Your question is only a few hours old. If you're willing to wait longer, people may comment to request information that is specifically useful to your situation, or may be able to give an answer. (It shouldn't be harmful to include the ubuntu-drivers output, though.) I understand if you need a properly working system ASAP and thus decide to reinstall 17.10. But if you wait longer you may get an answer.
Questions are sometimes answered in just a few hours but it's quite typical for it to take significantly longer.

I added output from running the command
Well, I can't watch anything right now and to be fair I'm quite disappointed that it simply stopped working after the upgrade - thinking about moving to another distribution. I have a bootable USB with Ubuntu 17.10 that will work just fine. It's just that usually you can find solutions even if problems arise, whereas in this situation I have no clue what may be causing the issue and it doesn't seem to make any sense

I'm hoping that you just need to install a driver or something. Unfortunately I do not know.

4:46 PM
Thanks :) I think if it drivers were missing it would have been fixed by now :-\ I'll give it some time - need to go out anyway, then I'll decide what to do next

I think I need to close some tabs

@user1970395 In conjunction with some of the other things you have tried, you might consider contacting the Vendor's site for Linux drivers. Changing distributions could prove to be a little more work on your part, whereas many vendors appear to try to provide Ubuntu specific drivers, and ofter report Ubuntu tested results.
@user1970395 It also appears that this Ubuntu support site is one of the most popular for Linux support. Most of the time when I look for something for Linux, Ubuntu is mentioned in the link description, without my specifying Ubuntu.

@NathanOsman didn't you once make something to fix missing/broken libc? askubuntu.com/q/1029337/367990

Yes, but it needs to be installed on the filesystem before libc is broken.
It's not automated either.

You might still leave a comment, for before they try messing it up the next time

Q: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS only boots with Recovery Mode with Linux 4.7.2 After Upgrade
