@KazWolfe My upgrade will be completed within the hour. I can let you know about the fonts at that time.

Running it now. The ask ubuntu site looks... different

Looking forward to seeing the upgrade.

Might just be chrome going crazy

12:12 AM
@KazWolfe possibly? I don't know all the changes (read the release notes! :D)

12:29 AM
Aaand I have a slurm user.

Q: CAPTCHA box not shown

Organic MarbleAs annoying as CAPTCHAs are normally, it's super annoying when they are impossible. If y'all don't want me to post, just say so :( My account is basically useless now, I even logged out and back in.

A small question: I feel uneasy that this question title was altered: askubuntu.com/q/966927/57576 so that this question: askubuntu.com/q/1028549/57576 fitted the dupe better?
Or put the last Dupe vote in place :)

Q: Why am I unable to set my drive as the default boot?

Ali Palobaso when I'm in my UEFI menu, I clearly have two options, or my two drives. The problem is, when I try to set my default boot, the drive I'm trying to boot from doesn't show up in the selection menu. On the drive I'm trying to switch away from, I had grub installed, but the drive has since been ov...

Q: GNOME Ubuntu - select file save prompt via keyboard

Tyler DurdenIs there a way to select a certain option in the GNOME desktop GUI prompts (as pictured below). I'm using Ubuntu 17.10 and there doesn't seem to be a clear way of selecting one of the options with the keyboard... from what I've learned: Enter = Right most option Esc = Cancel ??? = Left most opt...

Anyway I would be grateful for anybody who could take a look....

@andrew.46 At those questions?

3:10 AM
If you're asking about those questions, I'm not sure what your concern is. I'm one of the close voters, btw. I don't think the other (older) question was edited to make your question fit it as a duplicate. I think it was edited to address the same concerns you had about people being confused by the appearance that it was version specific. Editing it, rather than posting a new question, would even have been the appropriate course of action originally.
We don't add new questions for every question that mentions an Ubuntu release when a newer release comes out to which it the question still applies--that would make no sense, and it would be overwhelmingly inefficient! The ability to edit posts so they remain valuable for the future is a fundamental cornerstone of Stack Exchange! Also, if the other question had been edited so yours could be closed as a duplicate, that would still have been fine.
Anyway, people who would find your question will still find it; questions that are closed as duplicates are still indexed by search engines. This is one of the main purposes of duplicates in the Stack Exchange system--they send people to the questions they're closed as duplicates of.
For both that reason and because your answer is valuable (you presented the information quite well, I think), I recommend keeping your question, and not deleting it, whether or not we close it as a duplicate. I do very much hope we close it as a duplicate, though. It totally is a duplicate.
@andrew.46 So that's my view. You might want to post on meta if you want to solicit more, and potentially different, opinions (though, from where I'm standing, closing your question as a duplicate seems extremely ordinary and unobjectionable). Nothing wrong with asking in chat, btw, you just might reach more people if you also raised the issue on meta, if you're concerned about it.
@EliahKagan *to which it the question still applies

Q: Failed to implement Nginx caching - connection refused

user9303970I'm having trouble getting my site to work after trying to implement Nginx caching. I use Ubuntu 16.04 (xenial), Nginx (1.10.3), PHP-FPM (7.0) and WordPress. Port 9000 (for php-fpm) is unfiltered by UFW. Reproducing my environment 1 - setting confs: nginx.conf default conf virtual host /etc...

Still stuck with this...

well it looks like Ubuntu 18.04 lts still not available
says no new release found

As always it may need some time until it offers an auto-upgrade. Upgrades from 16.04 will have to wait until next point release.

This worked for me:
do-release-upgrade -d IIRC
11 hours ago, by Thomas Ward
@KazWolfe do-release-upgrade -d IIRC the d-r-u script doesn't get it until .1 release, but don't quote me on that.

Q: How to fix Ubuntu upgrade?

George LuCan`t upgrade ubuntu to newest version, get this errors: I tried to fix the errors through Synaptic, but the program did not see the broken packages. I also tried to fix errors using the terminal command, but it did not help $ sudo apt-get install -f Reading package lists... Done ...

10:16 AM
@KazWolfe My fonts appear to be the same. Chrome works ok also. I had other problems that I eventually was able to resolve.
Did you ever get Chrome and your fonts back the way you wanted them?

1 hour later…
11:35 AM
@user9303970 the issue is PEBKAC because you didnt read the www.conf's listen config line to actually see where FPM is listening. I wrote an answer as such detailing what you need to fix. I will double check the config directives to update when I get to work (on my phone right now)
also good morning to everyone apologies for saltiness or irritability but I just woke up so...

... time for coffee Thomas!

@Takkat all will be better once I get to work where my coffee maker is (at my desk no less heh)
until then, irritable. so avoiding moderating things until coffee :P

12:02 PM
@L.D.James yes I think I will wait till July to get the stable release
too soon to use 18.04 rather use 18.10

12:45 PM
> If you have a question, or if you think you may have found a bug
but aren't sure, you can try asking in any of the following places:

#ubuntu on irc.freenode.net
http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users
http://www.ubuntuforums.org
http://askubuntu.com
Isn't this a bit misleading considering that we regularly close questions containing bug reports?

@dessert Very. Please file a bug report about that (apparently, that's the way to correct this sort of thing).

I think questions like "Is (such and such) a bug?" are not off-topic for Ask Ubuntu. It may be that the release announcement's wording is misleading to people though. If a question is effectively a bug report, even if it theoretically could be interpreted some other way, it's likely to be closed here.

1:16 PM
@dessert "may have found a bug but unsure" means that it might be a support question, and if it ends up being a bug we can close it as a bug report and say they need to file a bug
i've discussed this with the CC before long in the past
and lost on this matter. The compromise was "if you're unsure if it's a bug..."

@ThomasWard Oh, okay then.

... which for end users 95% of the time it isn't a bug and is just PEBKAC and misunderstanding/misconfiguration of things
@dessert the key part is "If you have a question", less so the "or if you think you may have found a bug" part.
namely, "Where can you get help to diagnose a problem and/or solve it"

@ThomasWard true that, AU can do important work to keep those cases away from the bugtrackers

which is how I interpreted that
@dessert which is why I'm not in hardcore war-path mode on trying to force them to remove that wording.
if ti had been along the lines of "If you think it's a bug, go ask on Ask Ubuntu" instead, then that'd be different
@user9303970 Just an FYI I confirmed the configuration directives I put in my answer, so that's Good To Go

Oli
Holy balls it's annoying to watch an Ubuntu system upgrade. It must have rebuild DKMS modules and run update-initramfs a dozen times now. Just save it for the end!
Argl, it just removed all the old kernels and ran it again >_<
Twice.

1:32 PM
@Oli better safe than sorry

Oli
Sure. Tell that to my 40" 1024×768 screen.
The cupcake in your avatar is actual size.

don't eat dessert... we'll lose out on so many great answers

3:28 PM
@gansub My next change will be 20.04. I've never had any problems with an LTS version (before now). I did experience some problems initially this time. It took me a good minute to figure it out. Turns out my screen was quite distorted because of a self-created theme that wasn't compatible. Probably because the theme was using unity. I also had a lot of video problems. It turns out that was due to PPA drivers that didn't carry over.

I tried sending the signal 15 with kill and it don't do nothing.Know why? — PostMaloneM3m3r 1 min ago
is my answer really unclear?

Other than that, I believe the intermediate versions (in between LTS versions) has been the trials and testing that equal to the "testing for stability" that you wait for. My using the LTS early gives me opportunity to contribute to better testing and the "stable release".

4:07 PM
On 18.04, I'll miss many of the things that I initially didn't like about Ubuntu, when it changed to Unity. I'll miss the Global Menu. I'm sure I'll eventually get used to the difference. This is the first LTS version that I haven't rushed out and installed on the computers of all my friends and clients.

@vidarlo No

Q: Shouldn't the system prevent accidental verbatim duplicates?

Eliah KaganThis question is a verbatim duplicate of that question. They had the same title and body (until one of them was edited), are by the same author, and appear to have been posted within the same second, i.e., both are shown as having been posted at 15:32:17Z. 18.04 first impressions: eh.
i still have my unity session somehow (woo!). i wonder if there's a way to port notifications from gnome 3 into it
Xorg is, as always, a complete clusterstorm and I'm completely missing the wayland option (!!). Fonts are back to normal (cc @L.D.James), was just a chrome issue. I actually preferred the fallback
Am happy PGP smartcard auth didn't break though. that was a welcome surprise.

on the theme of smartcards. Anyone have expirience with Athena IDProtect V6 smartcards?
got a few blanks from them

7:59 PM
@KazWolfe thanks for the comment I misunderstood completely...

8:47 PM
What does the IIRC mean in this command? I understsnd the "-d"

do-release-upgrade -d IIRC

If I Recall Correctly
@L.D.James that's not a command line parameter, but a comment.
the command is in courier new and the comment is in whatever font is standard here
(too lazy to look up which font exactly)

Thanks, Fabby! Interesting. I had found the same on a web search "-d IIRC". But all my searching of IIRC showed your meaning.

9:06 PM
I'd say it's “if I remember correctly”; the german wikipedia list “Liste von Abkürzungen (Netzjargon)” (I like it so much) lists both explanations
> IMNSHO „In My Not So Humble Opinion“
> IANAL „I am not a lawyer“

9:18 PM
@dessert I like SNAFU and FUBAR best... (one of those two is my MO at work at all times...)

It's amazing how my mind has filled in the blanks for "IIRC"" and never realizing I had never investigated the true definition... or recognized it was an acronym.

Average of 15Mb/s on the 18.04 torrent from me since it was released. Looks like it's rather popular
17.10 was 3-4 for the first day

@L.D.James It just looks a lot like IRC and your brain was put on the wrong foot.
(or you're not a native English speaker)
@vidarlo Yup, and I'm not going to install it but I'll be moving to something else...

@fabby using it as keepalive for the vpn on my torrent box :)

Too bad, because I really liked Unity!
@vidarlo :D :D :D
Ping would be more efficient...

9:30 PM
ping is wasted
ubuntu is good

:D :D :D

and I have spare bandwidth to burn anyway. It's prioritized way down, so it doesn't really impact my connection

Yeah, you probably have a 100Mbps line in your log cabin in the woods...

50Mb/s upstream :P

@vidarlo What I used to have when I lived in Russia.

9:32 PM
I'm a native English speaker. Being mostly self-taught, I do have gaps. I also find gaps with many extreme professionals. Thanks for helping to fill in the gap on this one.

and I live in what would count as a highrise in norway. 8 stories
@fabby why did you choose to live in russia?
@fabby we have a upcoming half year job in russia, and we're more or less figthing to avoid it

@L.D.James No worries. English is my 3rd or 4th language depending on how you count...
@vidarlo That just shows none of you have ever been there...

@fabby russian shipyards. Can control my interest

Like anywhere in the world:
1. People want to have a good life
2. People want to have a better life for their children.

#1 implies avoiding russia

9:35 PM
3. People want their government to leave them the fuck alone

#3 also hints at avoiding russia

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Russian people are actually very nice...
Very helpful

russian people are very nice

Very social

I totally agree

9:36 PM
So? Why avoid it?

worked with russkies in my previous job
probably wrong russkies

Need someone to come to Norway to get trained and take the job to Russia?

ended with my boss getting two bullets in the mail and a phone call that they would be delivered faster if he came to st. petersburg

@vidarlo I left after a 500.000€ project was sold for 50.000€ by one of the project initiators to a competitor.
Doing business in Russia is tough.

yep

9:38 PM
Hyper-capitalism...

and corruption

@vidarlo Ever heard of the Corruption perception index?

have a russian friend living in norway. He was confused that the cops handed back 1000NOK (100EUR) that was at the back of his license, and the cops was confused why the note was there...
@Fabby I have.

@vidarlo I can imagine.

and we both live in countries with almost no corruption

9:40 PM
@vidarlo So you know corruption is everywhere, it's just that it's less visible to the sheeple in the countries we live in.

@vidarlo I only seed the kubuntu and lubuntu images, kubuntu has 12 KiB/s and lubuntu currently none. :)

@dessert try the main 18.04 iso :)
@Fabby :D

I mean: the USA is run by lobbying groups, the CIA, Homeland Security, ...

@fabby and USA has a legal system where you can bankrupt your opponen

Whenever I hear "Lobbying" I mentally substitute for "Corrupting"
It's the same everywhere:

9:43 PM
yes, and no

(looking up pic to visually describe what I'm trying to say)

there's a difference between lobbying and corruption
corruption is hidden
lobbying is open

@Fabby commonly used by neo-nazis in norway

@vidarlo No ti's not. It's just a eufemism...
@vidarlo That picture????

9:45 PM
@Fabby s/f/ph/

@Fabby it may be.

:O :O :O

@fabby yeah, with the tiers described as immigrants, government, workers and permanent social care
from top to bottom

@vidarlo I don't get it... But rest assured: I've actually tried to read "Mein Kampf".
Gave up after 2 chapters...

@Fabby have it in my bookshelf.

9:47 PM
1 of 2 books I started reading and never finished...

and amazon gives wierd suggestions after twenty books about process engineering and then mein kampf

@vidarlo Did you finish it?

yeah
not worth reading

@vidarlo :D :D :D
@vidarlo Indeed. Nor is "The Satanic Verses"

it's a complete piece of shit, where Adolf blames the jews for being to lazy to get a job in Wien

9:48 PM
Can't understand why there is still a death treat out for a piece of garbage like that
@vidarlo Yup.

If I might interject, this might not be the right place to publicly discuss indexed books and such topics...

@vidarlo Original German version or Bokmal translation?

@Fabby english
@Fabby norwegian translations are kinda hard to come by

@ByteCommander It's off the index nowadays: copyright expired.

is it? I dunno. Still feels inappropriate.

9:49 PM
@Fabby and previously held by the state of Bavaria :D

@vidarlo I know: my home turf...

hehe
my brother lived in germany, so he fed me the german debate over the book

@ByteCommander Meh, it's of historical significance and if you've tried reading it, you don't understand how the Nazi party could ever have been the largest party...

@Fabby because Adolf Hitler was a better orator than writer?

@Fabby they just didn't read it either

9:51 PM
@Fabby Have you seen Leni Riefenstahls movies from the Nuremberg rallies?
damn, they're good

@ByteCommander Our Dutch Teacher made us read the diaries of Anne Frank, and our German teacher made us read "Tagebuch eine Deutsche Mädel"
@vidarlo Yup.

@Fabby Triumph des Willens is a masterwork

Have it in my movie library together with Battleship Potemkin and Animal farm under the directory "Propaganda"

:)
I take it I've met another nazi connoisseur ;)

@Fabby Adolf actually indexed it himself so that nobody would notice the imbecility ;D

9:54 PM
@dessert :D :D :D
@vidarlo History connaisseur...
Napoleon... Hitler... Ghenghis Khan... Alexander the great... Caesar...
The list goes on.

@Fabby flags (no, not really)

:D I thought it would make someone laugh...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>:-)

@Fabby Ah. I'm more insistent on folowing neo-nazis in europe

People who don't learn from their mistakes?

yes

9:58 PM
:D

and I see them as a threat to open, liberal democracies

@vidarlo by car or by bike?

@dessert by facebook!

@dessert :D :D :D

@dessert are you living in the Stasi-era?

9:58 PM
@vidarlo Get off the FaceBag!

@vidarlo no, I was born when that one ended. :D
did you mean “area”?

@dessert :D

@vidarlo ;)
nearly every city is a stasi-area with all those cameras everywhere…

so true
and imagine what stasi could do today
It'd not be comfortable
just the fact that we're here, in a public channel, talking about surveilance

What Scott McNealy said about privacy...

10:02 PM
@vidarlo thank god there's No Such Association any more

@dessert but they never cared about such discussions

oh wait…

@dessert :D :D :D
@vidarlo Which language do you speak/write anyway?

@dessert while I still agree that NSA's warrantless eavesdropping is horrendous, it's still a far cry better than Stasi...
@fabby english and norwegian.

Bokmal or the other one and what's the deal of having 2 languages for what? 7 million people?

10:04 PM
@vidarlo fewer prisoners, true

@fabby ah. Nynorsk. Yeah. I'm using that

So, what's the deal with the two languages?

@Fabby I just finished reading 1984 today.

and historic reasons. We were a colony of Denmark for x hundred years.

Can you understand one another?

10:05 PM
bokmål is danish
@fabby without problem
and nynorsk is based on the spoken language on the west coast

@ByteCommander Most parts are good, some parts are bad...

so it's closer to my spoken language, and what I grew up with. I find it easier to express myself in nynorsk :)

which did you find bad?

How close are they to one another?

I must say it was well worth reading IMHO.

10:06 PM
@ByteCommander the bit about the sex=verboten, but there are still children...

@fabby fairly close. Mainly suffixes to words and that the german words does not excist in nynorsk

@ByteCommander Yes!!!

no, sex was not forbidden, it was just forbidden to have fun during it and to do it for any other purpose than making new followers for the party

you have like forbudt, from german verbooden, which does is not used in conservative nynorsk

@ByteCommander I just found the contradiction between no sex, but still children a bit weird is all. Maybe because I ready it when I was 16...

10:08 PM
and generally all words prefixed with for-, be-, and so on in norwegian are imported from germany

/shrug
also during the time it plays, that was still one of the less severe bans

@ByteCommander Lemme calculate: it was 35 years ago I read that book.
Actually, I read it in 1982 or 3

>_>
just in time
what surprised me quite a lot was, that you don't really notice its age

@vidarlo Norway is on the list of countries to visit, but it's just so horrendously expensive...

could have as well been just like 5 or 10 years old instead of 70

10:10 PM
@ByteCommander Or last year...
Same with Brave New World...

has not read Brave New World yet

for example, I also read e.g. Asimov's robot stories, and the age was obvious there, due to all the naively imagined tech stuff
me neither, but if I find it in the library, I'll pick it up next

@vidarlo I should try a Norwegian dating site and hook up with someone to save on hotel costs...
:D :D :D
And now for the riddle of the day: What is wrong with the following picture?

@Fabby don't look to me. I'm married! :D

10:13 PM
@Fabby missing chain? :X

@vidarlo In your opinion, where are the most beautiful girls in Europe?

@Fabby I'm married to a Ugandan girl

@dessert Nope...

:P

@vidarlo Woohoo! Beautiful children!

10:14 PM
lol

Come on guys, it's dead easy once you see it!!!
What is wrong with that picture???
Ah!!! Now we'll know whats wrong with above picture? @Rinzwind
@L.D.James ???
@terdon ???
@EliahKagan ???
If even Eliah doesn't guess what's wrong, I'm going to give the answer

inb4 it's a guy

@ByteCommander :D :D :D
Smoke! BRB...

well, gotta be careful these days

I'll give a hint: She's holding her hand above her eyes to shade them from the sun to look at her iPhone
I think the question is worthy of a star now!
because the answer is:
She's wearing sunglasses on her head!
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Or am i too much of a nerd to be the only one that finds that funny?

10:25 PM
@Fabby call me dumb, I don't get it – the world looks totally different with sunglasses, especially on displays I can't see a thing with them. If I had a smartphone, glasses and a number of other attributes I would look exactly the same.

@dessert Confirmed: I'm a nerd...

I don't get what's wrong. The sunglasses are on her forehead for storing them... instead of in her pocket or on a desk. She's using the phone, which may be hard to see through the sunglasses. Someone approaches, she looks up. She has to immediately shade her eyes to look at the person. She doesn't want to take the time to take her sunglasses from "storage" to look and acknowledge the visitor. It could be me.

I keep my reading glasses on my forehead most of the time.

@L.D.James She was loooking at her phone before I took the picture...
@L.D.James i keep my reading glasses in my backpack most of the time...

10:29 PM
@Fabby That's why she didn't have the sunglasses over her eyes.

Yeah, yeah, I get it: I'm a nerd...
Sorry guys!

When I was young I used to wonder why people wore glasses when they would look at you over the rim, or look at most things over the rim.
Now that has become me.

@L.D.James :D :D :D

@L.D.James Oh, so why?

@L.D.James You never aked to wear your granny's glasses?
I knew when I was 7 that glasses were made to make you see worse than when not wearing them...
:D ;-) :D

10:32 PM
No I didn't... as to why people look over the rim, it's because the reading glasses are for a particular view. Just like by focuses. A particular view.

I was 5 when I though that Germans could speak but not understand other people... @dessert @ByteCommander

Good eyes do all that more automatic.

(I watched the Mainzlmännchen from like forever so I could understand German, but couldn't figure out why Germans couldn't understand me speaking Flemish)

@L.D.James I used to be far-sighted but after I've worked 24 or more hours and only got 4h of sleep, I need glasses to read the tiny 15" screen on my work laptop)
@ByteCommander Funniest word of last week: "Bauchspeicheldrüse"
Luckily the doctor knew "Pancreas" as well....
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

10:36 PM
@Fabby because it's latin :P
@Fabby you should hear youtube.com/watch?v=MyH1lFyrG4c

Yup. from that moment on whenever I didn't know a word, he used the Latin word...

Oh wow, already half past midnight

He thought it was funny I didn't know any of the easy words but understood the complicated words...

that means i just right now ended a 16 hour tomb raider game session lol

@Videonauth Installed????
@Videonauth Ah... So the SSD is not installed yet then?
Oh shit! I should go to sleep!

10:39 PM
i already mounted it into my laptop, but no OS installed yet

Need to pick up mum from the hospital to,orrow!
@Videonauth Works?
Small, but it's an SLC so very fast...

well all i see is no bootable medium found but that was to expect, i cleaned and formatted it, but not did anything with it
seems to work

(they don't make SLC drives any more... SLC is nowadays used as cache for TLC)
@Videonauth Cool!
OK, I'm outta here.
