Q: How to wrap a string around large gzip file?

membersoundI have a large (several GB) xml file that is missing a root element. I might use cat on ubuntu to wrap around a <root> element around the content. How can I achieve this without having to extract and repack the content? It works if I create separate prefix and postfix gz files, and concatenate ...

Q: Linux how to stop ROS script that starts after reboot

McBooley0 down vote favorite So I've created a script that would check whether a certain server is running and restart it in event of crash (the script runs endlessly every 10 seconds). I cannot run any commands and CTRL+C, CTRL+A, CTRL+Z do NOT work. The main problem is also that the machine serve...

Can someone help? Is there a way that a chat-room owner can enable a user with less than 20 points to chat in his room?

Might require a mod, not sure

I think you need to set access settings

Also, will a moderator trigger the comments not for discussion flag on this:askubuntu.com/a/1028065/29012

I think a RO can do that?

Thanks @ByteCommander and @JourneymanGeek. I'm looking for the settings.

12:38 PM
Its under room
BUT I think the user needs a chat account created

Q: Boot partition 93% full

Kailen DavisI woke up this morning and my laptop was fucked lol. It keeps going and running in low-graphics mode. First, I wanted to check if it was a memory issue. Is 93% to full? is that why it is in low graphics? I have a dell latitude 5289 so.. also, I can't get networking to work in any mode includin...

12:55 PM
Ignore above: it's Kali, not Ubuntu!

@JourneymanGeek Can you give me a link to the "Create Chat" account option?

Is it on the chat screen somewhere?

I quite literally don't know where that is :(
sorry!
I've literally been on chat so long that...
I don't remember how one creates an account :(

12:59 PM
@L.D.James yes.

@JourneymanGeek it costs you 100k reputation, directly transferable to my name ;)
kidding
as well does not know anymore

@L.D.James Only a mod can do that.

i guess chat is bound to meta.SE

@Videonauth I was a pretty early adopter and the site is totally different

@Mitch if you're around and have time can you convert this to a chat for OP and @L.D.James ?

1:02 PM
@Fabby Thanks!
I used the flag on the thread, which works somethings to get a mod's attention.

Thank Mitch, not me: last seen 1h ago, so he might take some tiime to respond.

I understand. I was thinking you for the input.
@Quentin The current moderation who need to help with the issue hasn't spoke for an hour. I'm understand you can't type here, but you can see the progress on the chat issue.
I'm installing Ubuntu Server in the meantime to run test to duplicate your issue.

He won't be invited here...
It'll be a private room...

@Fabby Thanks! I fully understand that. The room in question is here: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/76546/repository-error

Hi, @cl-netbox

@L.D.James Hi, nice to see you ! :)

I pop in from time to time... usually learning by viewing discussions between the gurus.
And of course, in this case, getting help with how to use the chat invite feature.
...which I was helpped with.

@L.D.James guru ? hahaha ... nice :) You could have learned something when I assisted @Fabby the other day to get his ISO files booting properly ... :)

Hi, I'm your new meteorologist and a former software developer. Hey, when we say 12pm, does that mean the hour from 12pm to 1pm, or the hour centered on 12pm? Or is it a snapshot at 12:00 exactly? Because our 24-hour forecast has midnight at both ends, and I'm worried we have an off-by-one error.

@L.D.James This is a factually incorrect statement. Ubuntu Budgie has been on-topic ever since it became an official Ubuntu flavour (17.04+): askubuntu.com/help/on-topic
4

To clarify (and support) what @pomsky is saying: the help center explicitly states that Ubuntu Budgie is on-topic, and that it is instead the old budgie-remix was and remains off-topic. It also links to the official flavors page, where Ubuntu Budgie is listed.
Unfortunately the OP of that question deleted it, almost certainly out of the belief that it was off-topic. We should undelete it and let them know (one more undelete vote needed).

Q: Please un-mark my question a duplicate

EvanI recently asked the question at [1] which was marked as a duplicate. So I edited the question to explain explicitly how it is distinct from the linked question. No one has un-marked it as a duplicate yet. Please either un-mark it as a duplicate or explain what additional information you need to...

@EliahKagan done

@dessert Thanks!

@pomsky Please post that sort of thing as a comment to L.D. both so they can see it but, more importantly, so that everyone else can!

7:25 PM
There's a help.ubuntu.com page refering to Ubuntu 7.04 in 2018? Wow, that's bad.

@terdon Yes, I shall do that now, I couldn't before as the question was deleted OP.

@pomsky Ah. Well, that's a very good excuse :)

We need excuses on AU now too? Man! This sounds a lot like work!!!
:D ;-) :D @terdon

@Fabby To streamline the process, we should write an excuse generator in a combination of the original C Shell (with the original quoting "rules") and VBScript.
Some projects are self-hosting. Ours will be self-excusing.

@EliahKagan I have a BOFH excuse generator in JScript somewhere... Is that good enough?

7:34 PM
Very possibly. :)

@pomsky Thanks for the clarification of our support of Ubuntu Budgie. I'll be more careful in the future. I wasn't familar with the falvor, and thought I knew them all.

@Zanna [thanks for the edit](https://askubuntu.com/questions/307280/how-do-i-install-applications-in-ubuntu). Much better than mine was!
I hope you read the [How to install Ubuntu software when you're a future ex-Windows user!](https://askubuntu.com/a/575161/344926)
@L.D.James We live and we learn...
Did you finally get to talk to the user in that chat room?

@Fabby The user took a break until tomorrow while we were still working on trying to get it to work. I'll know tomorrow. I posted a message to you in the room that @Takkat had helped me, and whatever he did, made his name appear in the Explicit write access list.

8:08 PM
Yup. So a mod was needed fro a <20 user...

@Fabby Shouldn't be needed if you use the move comments to chat button

No. As far as I know, Takkat isn't a mod.

(otherwise I would have asked you how you did) 0:-) 0:-) 0:-)

@L.D.James Takkat is a chat mod (all SE mods are mods in chat), which is enough.

Another mod that isn't a mod?
Ah! Thanks!
Phew, I though I was going mad!!!

8:10 PM
@Seth Can you link me to the "Move comments to chat button"?
@Fabby I'll give you the details after it's tested tomorrow.

Thank you!

@L.D.James It appears automatically under comment threads that the system thinks are getting too long
or, at least, it did.

I don't understand your reference... "Another mod that isn't a mod"?
@Seth It doesn't always. Sometimes it happens after 5 or 10 messages between two users. Sometimes it never happens after a couple of pages of messages.

@L.D.James Weird. Well you can always flag the post and ask for the comments to be moved or ping me or any Ask Ubuntu mod in chat (these people) if you need comments moved to chat.

The last two times I used the methods (except for pinging you directly) it didn't work. So that was when I attempted to create a room and invite the user.
The "Move to Chat" by a mod is substantially better. It cleans out the Q/A section.
I'm making a note of your availability to be pinged when the the flag and general chat message asking for a mod doesn't work.
As a great community, Fabby and Takkat was very helpful.

@L.D.James I am not a mod for Ask Ubuntu but on German Language - a mod on any site is also a mod for all chat rooms. But I use my mod powers here only very occasionally the most ;)

@Takkat You made it clear that you weren't a mod. I didn't know you had some mod privileges. Thanks for the update.

@L.D.James all mod's names are blue (hint)
But not all are AU mods

That's clear.
I'm still curious if the description with the chat features are in error, if it's a temporary bug, or something else.

I am not really much into the technical backgrounds of the chat system - but adding a user's site profile or SE profile did not work... it had to be their chat profile.

It was the chat profile that I was using. That was the profile that I gave you.

9:06 PM
and with that it worked for me.

I gave it to you both in the form of the UserID and as the Link, which the menu specified.

I used the link . You couldn't do it because for <20 rep users you need the help of a mod.

I fully understand the error message. What is puzzling is that the menu says:
"Even when this room is read-only or their reputation is too low, these users will be able to talk in this room."
The user's rep was too low, but the menu says the users will be able to talk.
I believe, as I'm explaining the confusion to you, I'm starting to understand it better.

@L.D.James I added them with granting write access
They did not show up before that

That is what I'm understanding now. The message isn't referring to the room's ower being able to add a user... it's referring to the users that happen to be there.
Thanks for the attention and patience to help me to understand the feature.. and what appeared to be going wrong.

9:13 PM
exactly - <20 rep users can only be added by a mod >20 users can always talk but they can be added by you as an owner even if you made the room private.

It's perfectly clear now.

And you as a room owner can kick them if they don't behave - so it comes with some great responsibility. See here for more: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/271267/…

:)
By the way, I believe the way I thought it worked would be a nice enhancement to StackExchange. I'm familiar with feature request and discussions of this matter on AU/Meta. Which site would be best for the feature request to be submitted, StackExchange or AU?
It appears you may have answered my question while I was typing.
Thanks!

Q: If users with <20 rep can't chat, why does SO nag me to move comment threads to chat?

Craig Ringer Possible Duplicate: Disable chat migration notification if one of the users has insufficient rep? I frequently find myself helping new users with <20 rep with questions. These users need more than the usual number of comment exchanges for clarification, leading to long comment threads....

And the dupe linked there. It was being discussed.
@L.D.James meta.se is the place to discuss feature requests that affect all of the network

I'll study the thread. It seems that there's almost nothing new. Just about everything a person can come up with is already discussed somewhere.

9:20 PM
lol yeah :D
SE is a great place!

Absolutely!

got to move - cya

Q: Purpose of the "split" tag

The list of 49 questions tagged right now includes all sorts of questions: splitting text files, splitting large archives, splitting screen, splitting video file, split tunnelling, partitioning (separating or "splitting" home and root...
