Q: GRUB dual boot windows linux - device recognition problem

user2940623I'm using GRUB to dual boot Linux(Ubuntu) + Windows(7). After booting into Linux, the next time I boot Windows, I am not able to use my mouse or keyboard inside the operating system. The only thing I found that fixes this is going into my BIOS and then selecting "Save and reboot". I suspect thi...

@Fabby Good morning Fabby ! :)

Good morning! :-)
testing my boot entry ISOs one by one.
I found something nifty while searching for answers:
menuentry " ---------- Tools ----------" {

}

@Fabby clonezilla should work ... the same method as with gparted. :)

a separator has to start with a space and then you can put anything behind it.
@cl-netbox I get a kernel panic for gparted, but I'm looking and learning.
Rebooting again to test.

@Fabby does it boot into the gparted GUI or not ?

Error in name probably. checking.
error in variable name! :D
rebooting again.

7:15 AM
@Fabby :D

one step further: initramfs.
Checking again

@Fabby I thought that booting the gparted ISO already worked ? :)

CloneZilla, sorry.
after that works: Backup!
:-)
rebooting

@Fabby there is NO difference to gparted ... only the name : clonezilla-live-2.5.5-38-amd64.iso instead of gparted-live-0.31.0-1-amd64.iso ! :)

7:36 AM
copy-paste from gparted
(I followed the Clonezilla parameters as they have a few more
eg nodma and nodmraid

@cl-netbox I dhould have listened to my master.
@cl-netbox I did, it works!

Good morning Oli.

Thanks!

@Fabby You're welcome :)

8:19 AM
yeah... that's what I have...
werid.
let me try booting without the external HDD attached.
Rebooting!

@Fabby you should attach the external drive AFTER you booted clonezilla. (wait a few seconds before you enter the Ctrl+C step) ... :)

@cl-netbox Yup
if the external hdd is attached, it becomes HD0 in grub, the VNRAM becomes HD1, the first internal HD becomes 2 etc.
damn!
(Even when I change the boot order in the firmware)
USB HDD was first in boot order, but changing that didn't help.
UEFI is not very mature yet.
:D
Rebooting and taking full system backup!

8:47 AM
@Fabby sure thing ... now I know why it didn't work out at the beginning (our initial discussion a few days ago) ... always attach external drives after you boot from iso files. :)
@Fabby there's nothing wrong with EFI ... you just need to know how to handle things. Most users never check their BIOS / UEFI settings before getting into trouble ... unfortunately ! :D
@Fabby I hope that it works perfectly this time ... I wish you good luck, my friend ! :)

@cl-netbox Done!

@Fabby Great Fabby ... nice ! :)

Ah. Only space for one backup on the external SSD

@Fabby Suggestion : I have my three latest system backups on a separate partition (see above) on an internal drive and one or two older ones additionally on an external drive. :)

8:57 AM
Yeah, I like to store the backup separately from the computer.
Once I get my 2.5 TB drive changed, I can put everything on there and use the internal 1TB as a backup drive.
I one had a customer who had lightning strike a metal fence,
then the lightning went from the metal fence through the open/close wire to the security PC

@Fabby Most important is that you have backups stored somewhere at all ... if only other users would do that as well ... :D

who was hooked up to the LAN

@Fabby "like"? more like "mandatory" :=)
A company using our software once had a fire. Server totally burned down cuz of that fire. The backup ... was connected through a USB cable ... length of said cable: 3 meters. Needless to say the backup also did not survive the fire.

9:08 AM
@Rinzwind Yup.

@Rinzwind Both ... having backups on a separate partition is convenient when you have a notebook and are "on the road" ... and having them additionally on an external location is (self-explaining) important too of course - right @Fabby ? :)
Good morning Rinzy ! :)

Wow! you got dual backups! that's even better and how we run things where I work:
local backups replicated to the second DC.
rebooting to Windows for a support session

@Fabby yes ... that was the first thing I learned (taught myself) before I started to use a system ... having various backups for possible disasters handy ... :)

morning. our backups are copies of instances.
We use google cloud for main, have a 2nd instance per live server for data tools, a 3rd that is the backup. And that backup is also installed into a amazo and a azure instance for europe and us and into alibaba for our chinese instances.
In china google, amazon and azure tend to get blocked once every 3 months :X

@Rinzwind and nothing on bare metal ? :D

9:17 AM
--nothing--

@Rinzwind relying completely on cloud instances is quite risky - isn't it ? :D

Our google instances total 19Tb at the moment.

WOW ... that's a lot !

@cl-netbox not with daily backups ;) Only problem is when google kills cloud instances. That's why we got amazon, azure and alibaba too
@cl-netbox we reached 250 google instance this month :D

@Rinzwind let's hope they don't join forces ... or merge the companies ! :D

9:19 AM
not bad for a company with 5 employees ey ;)

@Rinzwind no, not bad indeed ... :)

@JourneymanGeek well if you think what we have today is much look back to the past
The Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) was a digital computer produced for the Apollo program that was installed on board each Apollo Command Module (CM) and Lunar Module (LM). The AGC provided computation and electronic interfaces for guidance, navigation, and control of the spacecraft. The AGC has a 16-bit word length, with 15 data bits and one parity bit. Most of the software on the AGC is stored in a special read-only memory known as core rope memory, fashioned by weaving wires through magnetic cores, though a small amount of read-write core memory is available. Astronauts communicated with the...

I love that trope. I do like being able to use a docker container I can spin up instantly on AWS cloud from a phone with a web UI on my phone though.
I just wish there were more applications as a service. So, instead of choosing a docker image for nightwatchjs or whatever, reading over it, then going and deploying it. I could just say "Hey Canonical. You got any nightwatch servers laying around? I trust you more than this random guy on the internet and you can just run it." Left click. Pushes and tests run. Or similar.

ah
I'd rather run my own server

Me too. I'ld just also rather have the ability to do my job with two buttons from my phone.
And it's an attempt to be nice to my boss and let them fire me if they want. So, it keeps working if I leave as opposed to "do we spend a couple hundred hours replicating his working environment or not?"

Well, it's the argument for cloud services imo.
It's nothing complicated. It's just a pita to get working the first time because the infrastructure may or may not have been written poorly with lots of hard coded variables. Just postman, newman, nightwatch, chrome, and a couple of utility libs for crypto and auth. I wouldn't want to recreate my laptop though.

nightwatchjs closed beta AWS instances are currently in closed beta, and my application didn't get an invitation. So, it tells me build it yourself. Same with newman API speed tests with a webUI. So, bonk bonk. It's on my list, but I can't bill for it b/c then they own it.

@DavidFoerster Do you believe that suggested edit is not actually by the post's original author?

9:43 PM
@EliahKagan I'm uncertain. Should I leave a comment under the answer to ask the editor to either log into their old account or have them merged?

That could be helpful. But if they only have access to the new account, then unless they have email notifications enabled for the old account, they probably wouldn't see a notification. The new account wouldn't be notified if they haven't edited the post.
As far as I know we have no explicit community consensus on what to do when someone appears to be saying they're the original author of an answer in an edit summary. This instance is made slightly more murky by how they did not actually say they were the author, though their edit summary strongly seems to imply they want us to know/think that.
We do have this (which I posted some 6 years ago) for question edits, which I tend to extrapolate to answer edits even though some of the relevant issues might potentially be different:

Q: What to do when an anonymous user insists they are the OP for an edit?

Eliah KaganSome edits, such as those adding information about an OP's system, should only be made... by the OP, or at the OP's explicit request, or by someone who is merely putting the information into the question, from what the OP has actually said (usually from comments). It's not, generally speaking...

A third reviewer approved it (thanks @dessert :). I'll post a comment suggesting they ask for their accounts to be merged. They should get it, because editors are pingable (even though the UI doesn't autocomplete their names).

@EliahKagan The edit is just not harmful in any way IMO, but provides further information – I seriously doubt someone else than OP would do a thing like that, and even if: no real harm.

Yes. I figure reasoning similar to that applies, even though the meta question there (by me) was for question edits rather than answer edits.
