Q: Deleted files from linux using find and need to fix

fjames003I know this was dumb, but I was trying to remove this trojan that copied itself across my system and after successfully seeing all instances of the trojan using find / -name trojan I then did find / -delete -name trojan and immediately starting seeing "Operation not permitted" on files that were ...

Q: Very high CPU usage when playing web videos (Ubuntu 16.04.3)

mojonesI have just set up a new laptop - Dell XPS13 running Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS. I've noticed very high CPU usage when watching web video. From a fresh boot, I start a single Firefox (or Chromium) window, navigate to e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SfXqTENV_Q and the video starts playing, and I w...

Q: How to turn display off and ignore mouse movement?

JoshI'd like to put the built-in display into standby (E.G. xset dpms force off) and keep the display off even if the mouse moves. That is, I want to ignore mouse movement for the purposes of waking the display. How can I achieve this? The use case is: I'm using Synergy to control other machines, an...

Interesting @terdon , I just found out python got its name because its initiator was a fan of Monty Python's Flying Circus. You've got to love it :)

Yes, that's one of the best things about it :P
That and list comprehension.

Hehe

@JacobVlijm I knew that.I met Guido twice myself :=)

@Rinzwind you did??? Now I am seriously jealous!
Seriously, it is a great language.
Filling out the deveolopers survey. Now I am sure. I am an alien.
....and they ask if I am bisexual or queer? That adds a new side to programming.
...If I am blind??? that would be an issue programming I guess...
...anxiety disorder???? well developing one during this survey, stopping.

@JacobVlijm: Yes, developer surveys are getting a little bit strange as of recent times. I filled in a Stack Overflow one last week that ended by asking me if I was "Trans, non-binary, or asexual"... I always thought that "asexual" referred to the reproductive systems of some other species, I always find it strange when they use it in this way.

user136984
I'm not quite sure what those things have to do with programming, but I guess they just want the data so that they can prove how inclusive they are.

user136984
Although personally I think it's a little bit pointless.

user136984
Oh yes, and I do think it may have also asked if I was crazy or not.

user136984
I decided to mark that one as "Prefer not to answer" so that they would think I definitely was. :P

VTC Non-OS related.

7:24 PM
@Terrance got evidence to support that it's not Ubuntu related?
switch configs are a non-issue if they can access the rest of the Internet usually
because routing 'works'
it could be any number of potential problems not just the 'switch'
E: Needs More Information From OP on what exactly they're doing :p

They have multiple VLANs on one NIC and without having a switch with VLAN-Tagging configured or something like that, outside of the host you cannot reach the other IP. Only the one that you are on the same VLAN as.

not necessarily a switch problem
and not necessarily an issue related to outside -> in
it COULD be a firewall rule on thel ocal system that DROPs that traffic
or it could be something completely different
static routes or what not outside of the Ubuntu host not set up properly on the remote box they're testing with (which if it is Ubuntu... well... :P)
@Terrance consider I have an entire network that's Ubuntu driven.
including but not limited to the switching functionality
and the firewalling
and the routing.
without evidence it's not their specific OS at fault, and hard evidence therein, I can't say that's "Offtopic" as is
just saying.

Well, feel free to answer it then.

7:44 PM
I am honestly thinking that in the present state that it is unanswerable. It is going to be a bunch of theories as to why it is not working.

unanswerable isn't "Offtopic" it's "Unclear" is all
my two cents is "Unclear what you're asking"

I can't cast a vote again.
That works. =)

10:45 PM
@jrg Well, I have been trying my Google Foo, and I can't seem to find anything that states about archives removing old packages.

jrg
but nothing that says they don't delete them
it's a weird thing

Yep, that is what I have been looking for. It is weird.

jrg
all i know is that if i try installing the pinned version it fails
and i can't find it in the directory structure on my mirror or the main repo

@jrg Old packages get moved from the ftp server (ftp.debian.org) to the archives (archive.debian.org) as soon as oldoldstable, oldstable, stable, testing, unstable, and experimental no longer reference it (e.g. the packages have all been updated)

jrg
@joshumax ok, good to know!

11:01 PM
I need to study debian more. =)
