00:00 - 17:0017:00 - 00:00

12:36 AM
you know, it's kind of mixed still, but I like this no-button touchpad a lot more than the stupid seesaw thing on my old laptop
it relies on capacitance, though, to tell where you're clicking, since it's technically only one button
so if your finger is dry or you use a pencil, it won't work

So the red light is flashing on my N5 when I plug it in.

that means "He's dead, Jim"

@KazWolfe so, do you think I should buy a pebble 2?

no
Pebble is Deddle

1:20 AM
I did it.
The application is less than 1 KB.
Do I get a prize or something?
:P

@Seth As Zach so kindly pointed out, Pebble as a company is dead, though their watches still work great. I personally like the Pebble Time more (color screen) but the P2 is a solid bet.
The Pebble app still works for now, though things are going to be shut down soon (store, transcription, etc). Once that happens, Gadgetbridge will be your best bet for watch control software.
It's still a good watch though

they're good watches, bront

Lol.

As for apps, it's all pretty open for install, so you can use anyone's archived apps. I know @Avery has an extensive collection.

what does Pebble run?

1:27 AM
PebbleOS.
(j/k)

You're not wrong, Nathan.

FreeRTOS

Custom OS based off of FreeRTOS

Meh, with any luck it runs an embedded version of Windows.

is it Linux?

1:28 AM
No.

hmm

It's just a relatively simple real time os

can I have a TDLR on RTOS?

Let me see if I can find one

@TheWanderer really complicated code goes in, fancy data comes out.

1:32 AM
Real-time OSes process things in real time.
There are usually deadlines to how fast an os must respond
There is often no "queueing" mechanism.

Linux, for example, is not intrinsically a realtime operating system.

Although there are patches for making it one.
If memory serves me correctly, Windows 3.x was realtime.
But then again, memory doesn't always serve me correctly.

Windows CE was realtime
Mobile sucks.

1:53 AM
@KazWolfe That's mostly all I care about. I just want an e-ink watch with different watch face capabilities. Everything else is mostly a bonus.
Fitness and sleep tracking are nice too, ofc.

jrg
2:08 AM
Try a fitbit @Seth
they aren't going anywhere, even though pebble is

@jrg iirc they don't custom watch faces
and they'r enot e-ink. I don't want LCD.

jrg
oh :(

I've considered it though

Don't get fitbit
Fitbit is objectively terrible

I mean, the charge 2 doesn't look bad.

2:10 AM
@Seth Do you want heart rate or color screens?

@KazWolfe That's a bold statement.
@KazWolfe I don't care much about color screens. I'd find the heart rate useful.

Then P2 is a good choice

@jrg do you have a fitbit?
@KazWolfe P2?

jrg
@Seth I used to.

Oh, pebble, right.

2:11 AM
Pebble 2

@jrg ah

jrg
I had a pebble (original) and a pebble 2.

@Seth I also think it's accurate

@KazWolfe well I'd hope you wouldn't state something you don't think is accurate.

jrg
Unfortunately pebble always seemed to fall short as a watch and as a smart widget

2:12 AM
@jrg Oh yeah?
Why do you think that?

You need to be online for everything, Fitbit sells your data, and QA is pathetic.

jrg
I dislike having to charge my watch.

The only other smart watch I think I'd buy would be an Apple watch, but they're super $$$ and don't work with Android so

jrg
and it didn't do enough for me to think of it as a smart widget

@jrg This I can understand. Hence the desire (among other reasons) for an e-ink screen

jrg
2:13 AM
I got an apple watch and while it tells time, it's definitely a smart widget so I don't mind charging it.

Oh you have an apple watch too?
I didn't know you had switched to an iPhone
(or did I?)

jrg
sold the pebble 2 (broke the pebble 1) to help finance it, yeah.

Pebbles are much better on Android actually.

@jrg gasp

jrg
i've been on iPhone for the last 3 years

2:14 AM
@Seth ban him pls

jrg
i just kept trying to go back to android
and failed

@jrg What happened to the Nexus 5X? Also, current model?

PebbleOS 4 + Android is pretty sweet

@TheWanderer Sorry, probably switching to iPhone myself eventually.

o_O

jrg
2:15 AM
@Seth 5x is my 'work' phone. And it's an older watch.

Ah. Also, sorry, I meant iPhone model.
@TheWanderer Pretty sure we've been over this?

nope

jrg
Oh, iPhone is an 8. I caved and upgraded from a 5S.

I value my privacy more than I value being on the "right" side of en ecosystem war.
3

Android is private and the right side.

2:16 AM
And Google continues to degrade my privacy continually.
2

jrg
sorry, SE - not 5S
Google didn't sue the FBI. Apple did.

Custom OS. Disable Play Services.

@jrg oh, interesting. thoughts so far?
@KazWolfe not well supported any longer by the hardware ecosystem.

jrg
congrats, now you don't have to worry about them selling your data because you can't use your phone at all @KazWolfe

No nexus, OnePlus is dying..
Also I value function. Why do you think I'm still using Ubuntu?

2:18 AM
Because it used to spy on you?
And demands Advantage be installed.

jrg
@Seth Glass back is weird, form factor is weirder (I really don't like large phones).

@KazWolfe no, it didn't. I wish people would stop saying that false statement.

jrg
battery life on iOS 11 is absolute crap

@Seth correction, sorry. It let Amazon spy on you.

jrg
but i'm sure they'll get it ironed out next point release in a few weeks
@KazWolfe Unlike Google, they admitted it and set about fixing it.

2:20 AM
@KazWolfe Nope, not that either. Seriously, do your research.

jrg
Everyone makes mistakes RE: user privacy.

What matters is what they do to fix it.
3

@Seth no. I'm a stupid nerd who holds brand loyalty above all else.
I refuse to accept the truth because I am a sheep.

@KazWolfe I sense sarcasm but even then don't get the meaning of that sentence.

What sarcasm

Ubuntu sent the search text to Canonical who anonymized it, sent it to Amazon, and then sent it back. Definitely a privacy failure IMO, but NOT any kind of spying.

but it's privacy failures like these coupled with Google's known "spying" that makes me want to move away from their platform.
@jrg This is so true though.

It's only a matter of time before Apple starts datamining you for everything

I agree, but that's a lame argument for not using them now.
Especially if it encourages them to not.

jrg
It's only a matter of time before everyone does that.

I just believe that in Apples case it's measured in decades, not years.

Another reason I found it silly that you complained about ProtonMail not being free. Not free means less incentive to datamine you. I'd PREFER to pay for my email and whatnot (I'm just also super broke right now too)

jrg
2:25 AM
Find me where Google has made this type of public commitment: apple.com/privacy

I'd prefer to host my own server and trust nobody but myself.

jrg
You have to trust your ISP
and your package sources

@jrg companies lie.
@jrg GPG signatures for both.

jrg
and the programmer who maintains your server software after working a full 12 hour day at their day job and putting the kids to bed
and makes a mistake that causes a buffer overflow at 2AM
leaking your private SSH key all over the internet

Like how iCloud got hacked how many times now?

jrg
2:27 AM
letting anyone within 500 feet of the coffee shop siphon off your key and have root access

@KazWolfe so would I. but $$$ and the time and effort to properly secure it are things I don't have right now.

jrg
@KazWolfe little/no evidence that iCloud hacks were in the software. Same flaw any system has, AKA weak passwords provided by users/celebrities

You should know that Kaz?

Oh, I do

jrg
Look - I do not like Apple. I just dislike everyone elses posture around privacy and security more than I dislike Apples mentality.

2:28 AM
No offense, but it seems like you're purposefully saying wrong things to support your point?
@jrg Basically what it came down to for me too

I'm just looking for any excuse to hate Apple for not letting me get system access and denying my warranty entirely because my device was jailbroken.

@KazWolfe ah

And not letting me own/control my device.

jrg
sounds like a personal problem. Google voids your warranty if you unlock your bootloader and root your device.

It is.
Legally, they can't do anything if it's hardware failure. Apple didn't care.

2:30 AM
@jrg wait, Apple doesn't datamine siri?!

jrg
@Seth They claim they don't and nobody has been able to prove otherwise.

wow

jrg
or even find anything that could indicate they do

Tbh if you are concerned about privacy you shouldnt live in the US. And shouldn't go online

jrg
Well we're screwed because we are in the US.
And everyone else is screwed because everything else is in the US

2:32 AM
@KazWolfe Tell me then, where should I live instead?

But what I said is not a valid argument

jrg
@KazWolfe explain.

@KazWolfe No, not living in the US and not using the internet are not valid arguments, you're right.
Actually, not living in the US might be a little valid.

But most of Europe is not a good place to live either.
@jrg My word. I'd never even thought of that.

jrg
2:33 AM
Another title for that could be: The NSA Has Most Of My Internet Traffic Because It Has The Servers That Host The Website I Visited

@jrg err, what?

jrg
or... Google Has Most Of My Internet Traffic Because Basically Every Site I Visit Has Google Analytics

@KazWolfe Like, I guess Europe is a little better on the privacy side of things (sometimes anyway) but they're not better on the government side so..
@jrg privacy badger ftw

Disabling GA is an option.

jrg
@Seth still screwed. we do server side google analytics tracking at work so we've got you anyway.
if you sign up, we can tie with 99% accuracy your session and a GA ID and event profile
put bluntly

2:35 AM
@jrg I don't understand. you got my IP and maybe the referring site, that's it?

jrg
you're f*cked

@Seth doesn't protect you from server side. Or the legal wiretaps everyone does (including your ISPs)

@KazWolfe well no, nothing can protect you from your ISPs, really.
A VPN helps tho

jrg
@Seth We bundle some fancy JS inline that hits an endpoint on our site with a cookie and the referral (if applicable)
we then pass it to google, along with your user agent and some other stuff

I block that JS so..?

2:36 AM
Privacy is dead.

jrg
and 99/100 times it'll tie everything together and record an event
@Seth not ours

That's pretty much all there is to it.

jrg
it doesn't come from google.com
it's hosted and bundled in with our app.js

what's your site again? I'm curious.

jrg
and hits an endpoint on our server
rvshare.com

2:37 AM
right! Almost went to the cards place.

jrg
that's the old job
I do different tracking there :)
good luck blocking that tracking, same deal - bundled in with app.js

@jrg yeah I remember now.

And it's not like you can get away with zero JS anymore. Pretty much all sites need it to function now.

@KazWolfe yep, which is why I never bothered with noscript

jrg
I haven't been able to find an ad blocking tool that will block it if we bundle it with our app js

2:39 AM
That makes sense.
Nasty.

This is why I just gave up. Companies are only going to get worse, because more profits for them.

jrg
oh dang it's 22:38 already. i need to go to bed, i've got an early morning.
there :P

lol
no colon in military time
2238

Not all 24 hour time is military time.

fair enough.
I wish everyone would switch to some form of 24 hour time. I'm so tired of the ambiguity that 12 hour time creates.

jrg
2:41 AM
ISO 8601 allows hh:mm or hhmm

@jrg good to know.

Be the change you want to see. I've switched over entirely for exactly that reason.

@KazWolfe Same
Although I still have to convert for family.. sigh.

jrg
Be the ISO 8601 you want to see in the world.

They can deal with it.

jrg
2:42 AM
oh damnit kazwolfe now i look like a copycat

I assume they can subtract by 12.
You can just mod abuse.
It's not like I have any power to stop you.

actually

And people would believe a mod over me, so...

@KazWolfe That's neither kind nor loving. Much as I wish they would just learn it too.

@Seth kindness is a waste of effort.

2:45 AM
@KazWolfe SE would look into it themselves and find out.
@KazWolfe it's really not.

@Seth something else we disagree about.
Kindlesa should be reserved for a very select few.

Like your direct family.

Debatable.
So
I wonder what color base I should have for my Google Home™.

jrg
I thought you didn't trust google
why would you invite the wiretap into your house

9 mins ago, by Kaz Wolfe
This is why I just gave up. Companies are only going to get worse, because more profits for them.

jrg
2:49 AM
If you get a google home you have to name it "wiretap"
so you can say "Wiretap, order me a pizza"
(yes, I stole that from some internet rando)

Already have one

oh that's actually real funny lol

It's been listening for a couple weeks now.

jrg
neat
how's wiretap doing?

Making Google profits. So, well.

2:50 AM
ok, chrome extension a la cloud to butt, but changes echo, alexa, Google home, etc to "wiretap".

Don't forget Siri.

jrg
coming right up

So, either a black or white base...

jrg
there we go
Regex needs some improvements

GUYS.

jrg
2:54 AM
should be case insensitive

jrg
ABOUT WIRETAPS?!

No, about a Docker container smaller than 1 KB.

Congrats. Would you like your Pulitzer?

I'll put it next to my Nobel Peace Prize. I guess. Meh.
:P

jrg
2:54 AM
I will submit you to Hacker News
I will unblock the orange website from my laptop

jrg
I have upvoted you then

Thanks :)

jrg
i'll submit to lobste.rs in the morning
but first, sleep. later folks.

Goodnight.
Tomorrow is Friday! \o/

3:02 AM
Yes, it is.
Tomorrow is also another day that has the potential to be just as miserable as any other day.

@JacobVlijm yeah, unfortunately there's not really a way to do that. sorry :/

@KazWolfe with an attitude like that....
TOMMORROW COULD BE GLORIOUS! YOU SHOULD CRUSH YOUR ENEMIES! SEE THEM DRIVEN BEFORE YOU! HEAR THE LAMENTATIONS OF THEIR CATS!
2

@JourneymanGeek I already hear the lamentations of my own cats.

You have cats. I start to understand why your days are miserable.

Hi i am facing problem while installing ubuntu in my laptop can anyone help me?
Here is the problem link

https://askubuntu.com/questions/960267/i-am-trying-to-install-ubuntu-16-04-lts-but-getting-kernel-error
I am able to install any version of windows but facing problem while installing or live boot of ubuntu

4:53 AM
oh my god.
masterlock actually made a good lock
or at least one that is very very hard to non-destructively pick

5:28 AM
Still not as good as this though: bowleylockcompany.com

actually...
this combo lock is impossible to shim (!!) and is apparently really complicated to engineer, so you sorta do have to brute force

@KazWolfe shimming and engineering assuming you don't want someone to know
brute force indicates... you don't care

yeah, you can take a dremel to it
a lot can be said about non-destructive entry :)
@NathanOsman see, i want to like them, but they use weebly.
also, my digital locks are way better but meh

There's a joke about deadly neurotoxin in there somewhere...

there is?

5:33 AM
It's the best way to keep people away.
Can't pick a lock if you're asphyxiated.
Even brute force loses to that one.
Probably not legal tho :P

well, it is in florida.

6:02 AM
WHOA.
I just got a wave of traffic.

hm?

My article. I posted it on Hacker News.
It's on the front page.
:O

6:17 AM
^--- server bandwidth
This is fun to watch :P

Cloudflare!

Nope.
I'm fielding this traffic on my own.
So far, it's nowhere near peak utilization.
CPU is under 5% and bandwidth is at about 1-2%.
There's room for another order of magnitude increase.
Though it is still climbing...

Q: Mouse pointer leaves trail

TobbI've just started using Linux on my laptop, and I am facing some difficulties working with an external monitor. At first, I tried connecting with HDMI, but then the resolution was limited. Also the mouse pointer leaves a kind of trail when moving it, which then disappears within a few seconds aft...

It has climbed to #11 now.
Bandwidth to the server is averaging 1.5 MB/s.

1 hour later…
8:14 AM
It jumped ahead of the SpaceX video at one point.

@KazWolfe hah. You'd be surprised how efficient a prybar or bolt cutter is

1 hour later…
9:21 AM
Ubuntu 17.10 will drop 32 bit releases for the desktop.

Oli
I wonder what's taking so long.

@NathanOsman congrats!

@NathanOsman orly? A friend of mine wrote an article a month ago maybe and it also ended up on the front page :D
He too was eagerly watching the hit-o-meter

12:06 PM
Also @NathanOsman, askoli.quickmediasolutions.com is down
@GeorgetheDev is askoli.quickmediasolutions.com down?

@AndroidDev askoli.quickmediasolutions.com appears to be down

Didn't they do that just a few days ago?

2:23 PM
How could you tell? :P
