I have no idea why it doesn't work.

the adb get-state part doesn't seem to be returning anything

I'd test it but... phone.

although it returns unknown normally

How 'bout that pacemaker vulnerability?
That's pretty frightening.

just don't have a heart attack and you won't need one :D

12:01 AM
I almost thought I had one once — turned out to be nausea and stress.
P.S. it wasn't fun.

hue

Hue, yes. But the $400 for calling the ambulance wasn't "hue".

could've bought a computer with that
so if I take out the pipe and just use unknown it works
if adb get-state | grep "unknown"

Yes, I know that.
I really missed that money.

Q: How to Remove the Dropbox Debian Repository from Ubuntu 16.04.03

Toby NixonI love Dropbox. I <3 Dropbox. That being said I would like to not only uninstall it, keep the actual files cause I have a huge hard drive and install it later. (I was having a bit of a drag, but that's because I need a new power supply [different subject] so I wanted to uninstall and leave it off...

12:40 AM
greetings.

Greetings @ThomasWard
@ThomasWard hello

1:35 AM
@gracious1 Hi--how's it going? I haven't tried your Waterfox installation instructions yet, but should [arch=am64] be [arch=amd64]? Also, do you happen to have any more information on that repository, in terms of helping show's it's probably safe? It's fine if you don't, I'm just curious and I think that might improve the answer.

2:28 AM
@EliahKagan yes it should
am64 isn't a valid arch :P

what about pm32

@gracious1 it's a new record

@NathanOsman >_>

@ThomasWard sure. It's short for "American Mechatronics 64,000"

lol?

2:33 AM
lol.

Runs very hot

like @Avery?

@Avery you said it yourself

ah
well, I only said that I'm hot, not very hot, but /shrug. acceptable

it's a compliment, take it :p
it's also a complement

@TheWanderer oh, the ambiguity of English :D
So... I've been editing a video and Sony Movie Studio has crashed on me about about 4 times in the past 2 hours....
(Yeah it's a cheesy name but it's actually a good software)
(It's the Photoshop Elements of Sony Vegas)
I think it's a problem with the dynamic RAM preview
I have plenty of RAM (24GB)
So there must be a bug in the dynamic preview code
But I understand that video editors crashing is nothing new....
Apparently Adobe Premier also crashes quite a lot

I may or may not have turned that into a meme and posted it to a subreddit for easy reputation

eh?

(it's an inside meme to post a specific picture when complimented when you don't ask for it, basically "how dare you" but with a happy face)

Mido BonaI went make some changes in ubuntu And setup some packages And Edit files In this packages and save it to iso . So How i Can Do this ?

12:47 PM
No wait, that's right. As you approach the speed of light, time slows.

@DavidFoerster it would have to be very close to light speed though, because IIRC the effect doesn't really start happening until you get really close to the speed of light

@AndroidDev The effect happens at all non-zero relative speeds but is negligible for most applications until you come very close to the speed of light.

12:52 PM
One common application of relativistic speed effects is satellite-based geo-positioning.

@DavidFoerster Yes. I just learned that if it weren't taking into account general relativity, our GPS would be off by six miles every day.

Whenever you use GPS the client device needs to take time dilation and length contraction into account due to the orbital speed of satellites.

Wow!
It's pretty astonishing, really.

Q: Best way to update question and answer for multiple KDE versions

m00amSome time ago I self-answered a question about Emacs window behavior with KDE Plasma 4: How to remove gap around maximized Emacs frame on KDE4 I recently switched to KDE 5.5 and realized that the problem persists and the answer still works, so the problem is not limited to KDE 4. I would like to...

1:35 PM
@ByteCommander That's cute and pretty fun.

nvm

2:00 PM
do we have DDR5 RAM yet?
I know there's GDDR5 for VRAM

k
is DDR4 just that good?
or is DDR5 having trouble?

@TheWanderer nope. expect it in 2018

like Verizon's CDMA drop?

Oli
@TheWanderer DDR3 was king for over 7 years. DDR4 has only really been toddling along for half that. There's a lot of hardware that needs to be replaced each time you decide it's time for a change in RAM spec, so the market appetite has to be considered too.

2:07 PM
hmm
Oli what do you think of this laptop amazon.com/dp/B071Z2BRYT?th=1
in that combo, except they'll upgrade to 128GB SSD for free

2:22 PM
@DavidFoerster Doesn't the particular effect you mentioned--time dilation and length contraction from relative velocity--only require special relativity? As I understand it, GPS calculations also require general relativity because gravity also produces time dilation, and GPS users are closer to the Earth's center of mass than GPS satellites are, so we have more of it from that effect even as we have less of it for the reason you mentioned. @gracious1
Did the Smoke Detector bot just leave the room and then return immediately?

@TheWanderer for that price I'd get a ASUS ROG

I need lightweight
and two display outputs

ahem
don't. get. extra. expensive. laptops.
Get something that does the job, and get a decent desktop
then you can vnc in to work at home and don't have to carry around something heavy and huge everywhere while still being able to work

I can't get a desktop when I'm moving among three houses in the week

@TheWanderer the ROG has 3 :-)

2:29 PM
but how heavy
asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-GL553VE this is the match for the Prostar
same weight though
thicker

4.5Kg with a 8-cell battery

dafuq
I'm not getting a 9-pound laptop

that's a gaming laptop ;-) you don't game on notebooks

I'm pretty happy with my razer blade stealth
I have an older model but the current one's got a 13 inch option, and HDMI and thunderbolt/USB-C outs

@Rinzwind I'm getting a gaming laptop because they also happen to be good for programming and development
all I play is Minecraft

Oli
2:38 PM
FWIW, my recent i5 ThinkPad 13 plays Minecraft fine. IGPs are adequate for older games.

integrated graphics are horrible

Oli
Not in my experience.
And a much happier overall experience than battling prime/bumblebee/whatever-it's-called-today.

I use Windows, remember?
integrated graphics have terrible support in Windows, and I don't use switchable graphics

easy fix
format C:

I'm not getting integrated graphics

2:43 PM
@EliahKagan Yes, you're right.

much better battery life than dedicated gpus though

IGPs are... adequete

I don't need battery life
that's what outlets are for

rip battery
Just get a desktop with wheels then.

Can anything be done about Launchpad listing the wrong upstream connection for file in Ubuntu? I'm not sure what I would report a bug about this again on Launchpad... Launchpad itself? I don't feel comfortable changing it myself without guidance (and I'm not sure Launchpad would let me). Should I ask about this here on Ask Ubuntu (to ask what to do)?
I can't really think of a way to ask the question where it's no effectively a bug report, but I don't know where, how, or if such a bug ought to be reported for real. I'm not sure what file in Ubuntu on Launchpad should link to upstream, if anything. github.com/file/file is an official read-only mirror, but patches and bug reports aren't accepted there. The home page does not seem to indicate another place Launchpad is capable of linking to.
*not effectively

4:38 PM
@EliahKagan I said "general relativity". It is the theory of general relativity that explains the discrepancy between clocks on the orbiting satellites and the clocks on the earth. Actually because of improvements in technology we can measure the differences between clocks running at high and low elevations. We are talking nanoseconds, of course, which is completely imperceptible to us mere mortals.
@EliahKagan I think it's okay to ask on AskUbuntu what to do. Someone may know something better.

@gracious1 Yes. I was replying to David Foerster's message about specially relativistic effects due to relative velocity. (I @-ed you as well in case you were interested, sorry if that caused confusion.)
@gracious1 I think I will do that.

@EliahKagan There are a couple of really good documentaries about Einstein's thought experiments. After watching them I finally understood general relativity (at least at a purely conceptual level). I'll check out that link, too.
And special relativity. Following his thought experiment about people on a train perceiving lightning strikes makes it really clear.
Does anyone here have any experience with IceCat?
(On a completely different note)

If you mean the browser, then yes, though not very recent experience.

My experiences have not been great.

Problems?

4:52 PM
Yes.
For example, it will just suddenly hang.
And freeze and crash

When it hangs is that temporary or does it have to be killed?

Must be killed.

Is it using CPU when that happens?

Actually sometimes it drops to black screen and then I have to log in again.
I assume it is using CPU because I can't even drop to console.
Computer becomes utterly unresponsive.
And trying to install from repo was a massive mistake.
It overwrote my lsb release file and maybe some other things, so that PPAs broke. It did not appear to change my kernel, however.

@NathanOsman question for license guru: I saw a YouTube video where the creator had taken a few short (<30sec) snippets from other YouTube videos and replaced the audio with that of his video. Just curious, but is that allowed by the YouTube license?

@AndroidDev It's fair use
recently there was a legal thing over it

bans @Avery

@Avery even if it's not under CC?

@AndroidDev There are "fair use" rules in the copyright laws
if it's a short clip and isn't the full thing and its primary use case is for educational or referencing only, there's usually a "fair use" coverage for the thing

9:15 PM
@AndroidDev well, IANAL, but I know of many people doing it outside CC license

it's why I can borrow 30 seconds of music in a presentation as an example of a specific type of music
without having to get a license to distribute that music

@Avery but that doesn't make it legal :P

@AndroidDev recently a lawsuit was won which basically ended up with "if you're not stealing viewers or aren't a competitor it's fine"

@ThomasWard ok. just wondering. He was reporting scam videos anyway, so yeah :D

POCKET SAND

@AndroidDev Good question.
I know there is fair use where you can use short snippets for the purpose of criticism.

@ThomasWard bends the spacetime continuum, around it

But I'm not sure if YouTube itself explicitly allows that.
Their content tagging system is pretty powerful.

@AndroidDev it's immune to everything, it already exists outside of time, space, and everything else, and opens up a portal between its own pocket universe and the target when it fires.
:P
anyways, i'm bored now

@NathanOsman well this guy was in fact criticizing scam videos..... but what if you were to reuse, say, some footage of a SpaceX landing or something? (Non-criticism)

9:23 PM
That I'm not sure about.

This is something I've always wondered about

@AndroidDev there are flat earthers using parts of spacex vids

what the actual heck. it was DNS.
@Avery now I'd like to see that. (I know a flat earther, and I watch SpaceX videos so)

10:30 PM
@TheWanderer Well now I'm down to 37 compile errors with the database implementation.... still haven't been able to test it yet though :\
