Q: Ubuntu 16 Startup Python Script for Validator.nu

JamesI am trying to run my Python script on startup as the validator should be running at all times. This allows auto updates to restart the machine without affecting our office in the morning. I have created the following file /etc/init/html5-validator.conf. In this file I included the following cod...

Q: put "source /etc/profile" in /etc/bash.bashrc and unable to open terminal window in ubuntu 16.04

John MiliterI put "source /etc/profile" in /etc/bash.bashrc and unable to open terminal window in ubuntu 16.04, and now, whenever I try to open a terminal window, it closes after a few seconds. During those few seconds, there is no prompt and it does not except commands. What can I do? My /etc/bash.bashrc l...

I'm configuring a local network on a server with centos on eth0 with a certain IP
192.168.1.X and a SIP configuration with given IPs by the provider on eth1. The issue is, I was working remotely
and while setting ifup eth1 the putty access is getting disconnected!! I double checked that the physical connectivity is right and checked the same using mii-tool eth1
by unplugging the cable by the onsite technician. Also, while restarting the network using /etc/init.d/network restart I couldn't connect to the server again
until we write the same cmd on the server itself and then we found that eth1 is down. Please advise.

Thanks a lot

@UsamaZaky I'm really having a hard time parsing your question. From what I understand, you are configuring eth1 remotely while connected to the machine over another interface, eth0. Is that correct?

Thank you for your answer. However, since there is no built-in way to do it, I'm considering writing a Python program myself, as it can be more flexible than awkMichael Kim 13 hours ago
Grrrr.... Why did I invest hours in writing an Awk script for you then!!?? Not even a single vote :-/

1:40 PM
@ByteCommander I assume you did it...

Kind of.
Science didn't pay well though, as always.

@ByteCommander You're building a portfolio and experience, all while having (I assume) some fun working it out. Not a total loss by any means :)

Yeah, of course.
Most importantly I came to the conclusion that awk is an awful tool for anything that goes beyond splitting lines into columns, as long as the columns themselves don't contain spaces as well.
But still, some appreciation for that load of work would have been nice.
Maybe no accept, as it was not a perfect solution, but I kind of expected at least an upvote and eventually a thank-you comment by the OP.
Oh, and I also realized how our awk-xpert Serg is missing.

Well, I've upvoted the post. It worked well when I tested it, it seems potentially useful (though I don't blame the OP for choosing to do it a different way and I'll be interested to see their Python code if they share it), and perhaps most importantly of all, it clearly states all its limitations so users know what it can and cannot do. In my opinion, you posted a quite good answer.

Thanks, that is the kind of appreciation I looked for :)
I know it is not perfect, but it's a reasonable approach which took quite some effort.
Not necessarily striving for the points (which are nice, but I already had an awesome week anyway). Just a friendly, "hey, well done, thanks".

This reminds me of an answer of mine that's not nearly as good, mainly because it does not comprehensively list the limitations (which, in turn, is because I am not actually totally sure what all of them are--it's not actually my code, just a snippet copied and cited from elsewhere).
The main bug in my code there--and the reason I should probably get around to editing it, at least to mention that--is that it doesn't show the fourth octal digit (as jfmercer mentions in a comment on another answer).
...So if you happen to want to post a cleaner, better awk solution to that question...... :) :) :)

5:34 PM
Naw, I had enough of awk. Especially for parsing ls.

I don't blame you.

Q: Is it worth the time and effort to reopen a question so that it can be closed for the right reason?

Elder GeekI've been wondering about this for awhile now and it dawned on me that I should run it up the flagpole here and see how it flies. For example How to launch this simple program on Ubuntu 16.04 was recently rightly closed as unclear. The OP has since added some detail that made it clear that they ...

Q: NGINX rewrite rules not working

blade19899I am playing with NGINX rewrite rules, but no matter what I do, things wont work. The current link: /tutorials/index.php?article=2 How I want it /tutorials/2 My current rewrite rule: rewrite ^/tutorials/([0-9]+)/(.*)$ /tutorials/index.php?article=$1? last; What am I doing wrong here?

@EliahKagan I've finally added a warning to that answer. It seems to have helped a number of people (judging by votes) and I'm reluctant to radically change the method it presents... but I'm worried about how it gives wrong octal digits when it encounters s, and t in the permissions string. Maybe I should add an separate alias/function definition one-liner that works differently? I don't know... if I did, the votes would be interpreted as endorsing that too.

oh my god
Google broke the translation editor in AS 3.0 B2
it autosaves after like 1 second, and kicks you out of what you were editing
@edwinksl can you translate phrases?

Try bing.

That was serious.

@TheWanderer Their neural translator is actually quite accurate: translator.microsoft.com/neural

can someone convert a Perl script to SH for me?

@TheWanderer Probably, or someone can advise you how if you have questions. One way to convert a Perl script to sh is to enclose the whole thing in a here document and pass it to perl. The presence of perl is mandated by POSIX, which is to say it has the same status as all the other tools we are allowed to assume when writing sh scripts, like find, grep, awk, sed, and so forth. What's the situation? Why can't you just run it with perl? Is the issue that it uses unavailable CPAN modules?

I need to use it on Android and Android doesn't have Perl
and I don't know SH or Perl well enough to even start

If you ask a question about that, I recommend mentioning that you need Android compatibility -- I imagine there are other things Android doesn't have that Unix-like systems generally must have. (Android uses the Linux kernel but is not a GNU/Linux system like Ubuntu, nor does it try to have all the officially required Unix stuff.)
Apparently some people have installed perl on Android. I believe there are other methods for this besides the one in that post. I don't know how current any such methods are, though. Do you want to ship this as part of an app that you will provide through the Google Play store? Or do you just want to perform whatever task the Perl script is for, on your own Android device?
If you just want to run the script, and the script is non-trivial, then your best bet may be to try to get a working Perl implementation installed. If the script is very small, then writing it in another language like sh may be reasonable. Can you say what the script is and what it's for?

9:09 PM
@EliahKagan well this is the script: pastebin.com/ztHyCYS9
it's meant to split an Android boot image into its ramdisk and kernel

@TheWanderer Does it have to actually be run on the Android device? Can't you run it on a PC or something, then use the split files?

I'm trying to make an app out of it

Oh.
