Hi.

yellooooo

Bragging about pictures?

Oh well then I won’t brag about mine then.

how'd you do that?

@TheWanderer You could submit that as Ubuntu community wallpaper candidate.

That is I am on an iPad and can’t see the meta data.

Q: When is the next Ubuntu community wallpaper contest?

Ian G.Does anybody know when the next Ubuntu community wallpaper contest will be?

that's 16.10

Shouldn't be too different for the next one.
Submissions for 17.10 have ended already, and 18.04 isn't open yet. Guess you have to wait a bit...

wow they did that early

1:11 AM
@ByteCommander is vote fuzzing on Reddit opt-in for sub-reddits?
because the V10 subreddit doesn't seem to have it reddit.com/r/lgv10/new

I don't know.
Actually the only thing I ever did on Reddit was upvoting one single post.
(the one about our Ubuntu Discord to be exact)

>_>

1:29 AM
Aw man, I missed it.
I am going to have a tough decision to make when 17.10 comes out - do I upgrade or do I revert to 16.04?
I have compelling reasons to do both - I need up to date packages and I need stability.
It seems like you can only pick one of those two.
Anyway, happy Friday evening everyone. I'm heading out now.
Goodnight.

3:10 AM
@Seth I didn't know that, but I'm not that surprised. I remember reading a couple of years ago that FB developed at lot of in-house tools that they later open-sourced.

Q: Is the rtorrent tag useful? If so, should we retag these posts?

ZannaI noticed a new tag rtorrent. It only has one post, but I did my usual thing of running a search which turned up ~40 questions mentioning rtorrent. Is this a tag we need? If so should old posts mentioning it be retagged? who can make a nice tag wiki for it? (not me, I am clueless)

I was looking for a way to invoke the kill(2) system call from Python. On second thought a Google search for “kill python” was not such a good idea since I’m not much into dead snakes.

@DavidFoerster I think you probably want os.kill.

Q: kill process with python

Bar AvivI need to make a script that gets from the user the following: 1) Process name (on linux). 2) The log file name that this process write to it. It needs to kill the process and verify that the process is down. Change the log file name to a new file name with the time and date. And then run th...

@EliahKagan: Yes, I found that with my second search.

Ah.
Considering Python's large library, for all I know it might also have a library function for killing pythons. :)

Q: Kill process by name?

AaronI'm trying to kill a process (specifically iChat). On the command line, I use these commands: ps -A | grep iChat Then: kill -9 PID However, I'm not exactly sure how to translate these commands over to Python.

@ByteCommander Thanks. I already found os.kill with my second search.

Isn't the os module generally considered "meh..."?

(and I actually wanted to send a different signal than TERM or KILL)

I thought most of its stuff got kind of informally deprecated and replaced by other more specialized modules

@ByteCommander For cross-platform applications, yes. On Unices they're just fine because they mostly mirror calls from stdlib.h and unistd.h.

1:06 PM
So probably psutil would be the best choice.

@ByteCommander Hey, sometimes you need that backwards-facing bayonet. :)

@EliahKagan Seems like a rare case to me. I like how you have to fire C with a hammer though.

I think the handgun cache on Python should actually a small "small firearms" factory.

@DavidFoerster Good afternoon David ! :) Nice to see you ! :) Well, I am very busy helping a user to get the subscription attached to his (stone old) RHEL 6 system ... :D What about yourself - what's up with you ? Everything fine ? :)

@cl-netbox: Not much actually. I'm planning my birthday parties next week.
…inviting people and stuff.

@DavidFoerster nice ! :) parties ??? more than one ? :D

A small one with family and another small gathering with friends.

So much effort just to remind one of having gotten another step closer to the grave...

@DavidFoerster I wish you a lot of fun ! :)

2:27 PM
@ByteCommander 365 steps
@cl-netbox Thanks!

@ByteCommander Hi Bytey ! :) Good afternoon ! :)

Depends on the step width.
And don't forget leap years.

@ByteCommander Yeah, I hope people don't expect much just because it's going to be my 30th.

Heyo Boxy.

@DavidFoerster You're welcome ! :)

2:28 PM
Oh, nice. Now you're officially old.

@DavidFoerster leaves another seventy years to go until the calculated minimum of approximately 100 years until grave ... hahaha :D
@ByteCommander what shall I say ??? :D :D :D

@ByteCommander Hey, I'm still in my twenties! Years and year spans are traditionally counted from 1. ;-]

/shrug
I guess I should stop bothering you with my bad mood...

@DavidFoerster Don't forget : everybody is exactly as young as he feels ... also, 30 is definitely not old ! :)

@cl-netbox Meh. As a mathematician 30 is merely the successor to 29, so like any other number. I am getting older but I don't feel that particular numbers of years hold a special meaning.

2:37 PM
@DavidFoerster exactly my opinion ... a birthday is just a day as any other day and we all are getting older (a normal thing) ... most important is that you are feeling fine and that your health is in good state - right ? :)

Hmm, some loud open-air techno event is going on within earshot range.

Love Parade back in Berlin ?

Did they revive the (successor of) the Love Parade?

No idea ... when we lived in Berlin, we left the city on those Love Parade days ! :D

Ah, indeed it's the Fuck Parade.

2:47 PM

Sorry, but that's the official name.

Oh my...

3:01 PM
I imagine going through visa check and the border gate person asks "What do you plan to do in your visit to the United Kingdom" and their face when you say "I'll attend Fuck Parade".

"sausage fest"

@Avery Just circumscribe it with "street music festival"

where's the fun in that

And it's in Germany, btw. ;-] I hope our customs agents can take a joke. (Also, English swear words aren't considered as that bad.)
Hmm, what should I put on my pizza…

3:17 PM
@DavidFoerster tortellini

Yeah, putting one type of dough on top of a very similar dough sounds like a great idea.

pineapples

@edwinksl you monster! ;-]

i am a huge fan of pineapples on pizza

better?

3:19 PM
your hate motivates me

xD
I think I'll settle for one half Gorgonzola, Mozzarella and Edamame, and one half tuna and onions.

@DavidFoerster I got that as surprise pizza once at a restaurant. It was great. Ordered it again the next time.
You can also put an egg in the middle of the pizza.

@DavidFoerster Not really. An ostrich is still about twice as fast as Usain.

Affordable good cheese is one reason why sucks less to be poor in continental Europe than in other parts of the Western hemisphere. :-)

So you mean... everywhere but Great Britain?

Imported cheeses is expensive in North America too.
…and the domestic cheeses pale in comparison.

anyone know of a good C++ IDE?

vim

cat lol
Code::Blocks and Eclipse CDT are common cross-platform choices for C++ with debugger and build-system integration.

If I ever get a cat, I guess I will call it vim.
But then again I don't think that would be beneficial for my relationship to that cat, so maybe that isn't such a good idea...

7:16 PM
Do you mean because the cat might prefer emacs?

i sense you are trying to start another editor war :P

No, because I'd keep trying to kill the cat and keep failing to do so.

7:28 PM
So no more using React for me.
The license is a problem.
I'll stick with Ember.

7:47 PM
@TheWanderer Qt Creator
Not entirely intuitive to set up but quickly enough with the help of the official tutorial(s). The code analysis ant auto-completion are quite good.
I've also heard many good thing about Jetbrain's CLion although it's not free.

my colleague uses qt creator too

I've used it personally for small-ish projects.
…and was much happier with it than with Eclipse CDT.
There's an excellent PPA (managed by a third party) for it if you want to avoid the installer.
Oh, and it supports Make, CMake and a custom build system out of the box. There should be plug-ins for other build systems.

Sometimes I have fun.

@NathanOsman *snort*

1 hour later…
9:24 PM
@DavidFoerster I used it for small C projects at university, and although it's okay and better than most simple freeware editors, I like it less than the other IDEs from the JetBrains family. Could also be the language to blame though.

9:49 PM
@ByteCommander: Thanks for the input and good to know! I only used IntelliJ and PyCharm so far and they were near excellent.

Yep. I additionally used PyCharm and PhpStorm, which are amazing.

I really dislike how they use Java, but other than that, they're pretty fine.

What's wrong with that?

It's fairly slow and uses too many resources and everything

Yes, Java does have that tendency.

10:03 PM
being slow and resource-intensive?
that's basically Java's slogan

Garbage collection doesn't have to be slow.
I don't know why Java's implementation suffers so much in this regard.

well it's Oracle now
they probably sued the Java GC into bankruptcy

Lol.
Ya know what would be really funny?
Oracle using React.

10:06 PM
hue

@TheWanderer Read this part of the React license agreement carefully: github.com/facebook/react/blob/master/PATENTS

hello all

> "The license granted hereunder will terminate, automatically and without notice,
if you (or any of your subsidiaries, corporate affiliates or agents) initiate
directly or indirectly, or take a direct financial interest in, any Patent
Assertion: (i) against Facebook or any of its subsidiaries or corporate
affiliates..."
^--- particularly that section

wait a minute
so if you sue Facebook for some reason, you can't use React?

So if Oracle uses React and tries to sue Facebook for anything at all, then Facebook can turn around and sue them for breaking the license.

10:07 PM
how is that legal?

@TheWanderer Exactly.
@TheWanderer There's no law against stupid licenses.
This is one of the reasons I don't use React.

but that seems like something that should be illegal

Why?

conflict of interest-ish

10:08 PM
@TheWanderer Illegal, no. Will it stand up in court? That's another question.

hmm

Nobody seems to have tried it yet :P
And I don't want to be the first.

it is Facebook though

Besides, I don't have any patents.

and if they don't have enough lawyers, they can find more on Facebook

10:09 PM
True.

they could also accidentally suspend the judge's Facebook account

@TheWanderer Why would it be a conflict of interest? For whom? The license is granted by Facebook, so there's no conflict of interest if it works to the benefit of Facebook.

maybe not conflict of interest
but React usage, unless someone's suing because of React, should be irrelevant to everything else
in any case, it's pretty petty

I don't know of any laws against that. Anti-aggression clauses are pretty common in American contract law.
There are rights that individuals can't sign away but that doesn't protect you from breach of contract by doing so.
E. g. in non-anglo-saxon law there's an unalienable right of authors to dictate the use of their work. Authors can revoke whichever license they granted in the past at will but that doesn't protect them from litigation for breach of contract.

Gaaaah!
The 2 primary server's for ClamAV's database must be down
and with the 3rd server I'm only getting 500KB/sec
And the 3rd server is less than 100 miles away from me!
(according to IP geolocation)
:\
90%, come on, finish..... :D
@NathanOsman well, we've got week old stuff on the starwall again

The bot hasn't been able to tweet anything for days.

Bot?
And oh BTW did I mention you're an expert lurker? :D

how do you do it?

@AndroidDev I happened to just have opened the tab :P

11:03 PM
you weren't even in the room

Your timing was perfect.

lol
nooooo, now it's downloading another database :\
500KB/sec is PAINFUL!

That's all I have.
I feel your pain.

O_O
Oh right you have DSL :(
Tell your ISP to look into VDSL
30Mbps max speed

I don't like my ISP at all, I'd just as soon switch.
Even my cell carrier can get me 1.8 MB/s.
...and for less money.

11:06 PM
yeah I hate Comcast. I think they prioritize speed test traffic and then slow down normal traffic :\

11:18 PM
@NathanOsman Do you have any experience with ClamAV?
it spat this out at me:
LibClamAV info: scancws: Error decompressing SWF file. No data decompressed.
I'm trying to scan a HDD for a friend
it's still running though

Not really, but that error makes it seem like the SWF is corrupt.

so.... I guess it was talking about a file it found on the drive?

I would just ignore it.
Yeah, I think so.

this HDD is at least partially corrupted because the Windows install wouldn't even boot
NTFS-3G seems to mount it just fine though
(Basically I'm scanning for any malware and then moving the files to their new computer)
lol, this el-cheapo SATA-->USB adapter's disk activity light doesn't even work!
and the plastic front cover doesn't fit properly into the aluminium body...
you get what you pay for I guess....
but it works and that's all that matters :D
