varUPI'm new to MLPPP so... be gentle on me. I'm working on a home project where I would like to bond three ISP's together in Ubuntu 16.04 server with multiple NICs. I'm having trouble understanding which is which. What's the difference between MLPPP and PPPoE, or are they the same thing? If I want...

Q: Sound stopped working after upgrading Ubuntu from 14.04 to 16.04

Daniel CunhaMy notebook is a Dell Inspiron 15 Gaming. My Ubuntu's version is xenial. After upgrading from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04; the computer could not detect the sound card anymore... Also, alsamixer was not working neither... I tried to do somethings: reinstall alsa utils; installed some drivers manually...

I might get something with the next generation of Sailfish OS, most likely something from Jolla itself.

@Pilot6 Hi ! :) What can we do ? Flag them ?

I did flag it. It may be a good answer, but it is against the rules. And there are links to some ROM site...

2:31 PM
@Pilot6 Thanks, but there's no point in flagging people who post identical answers. The system will automatically flag them.

@terdon I did not know that. What if the answers are very slightly different?

@Pilot6 I think the system will only flag 100% identical ones. If they're different, there's no problem anyway. Adapting an answer to fit multiple questions is fine. What we generally don't want is identical answers.

@cl-netbox I get that, that gets me happy, but I've had many bad experiences updating the Kernel :-\

@RonnieDroid nothing to be sorry ... was a nice joke ! :)

@cl-netbox yeah, English is fine, who speaks Syriac anyway? Lol

@RonnieDroid what ? I never had an issue with kernels - but I always use stable and tested kernels from the repositories ... :)

@cl-netbox so maybe it's only me :-\

@RonnieDroid no it's not only you ... many users are experiencing issues, but in most cases it's their own fault ... too many tweaks and not enough (basic) knowledge. :)

3:56 PM
@cl-netbox maybe yeah

4:24 PM
@RonnieDroid By the way, which system(s) are you using ?

4:40 PM
@cl-netbox will must of the problems I had where from when I was using elementary OS and only when updating the system.
Now I use Ubuntu gnome for years.
But I never upgrade the OS, I always start fresh when a new version is available

@RonnieDroid my first ubuntu was gutsy ... :)

@cl-netbox never heard of it, my first was Ubuntu 12.04, I have never had anything but Ubuntu and distros based on Ubuntu, I have right Solus and it's really nice, and would love to use Arch but it just won't boot in my MacBook Air

@RonnieDroid great ! best thing you can do ! I'm doing it the same way - always perform clean installations ... that is the best way to avoid problems. :)
@RonnieDroid gutsy gibbon = ubuntu 7.10 ! :D

@cl-netbox exactly :-)
@cl-netbox wow, that's from 2009 or something? Back when I thought Windows is the only OS lol
@cl-netbox the 17.10 release will be nostalgic for you :-P

@RonnieDroid my recommendation as an alternative : check out fedora ... version 26 will be released in a few weeks (mid of July) - you'll get a perfectly stable system with newest stable software packages available ! :)
@RonnieDroid gutsy was released in October 2007 (7.10)
@RonnieDroid 17.10 nostalgic ? sorry, don't understand

4:50 PM
^^ Do I have to install proprietary driver in order to get working wifi? Or is there any alternative free software available?

@Pandya Hi ! :) yes, you have to install the Broadcom drivers ... otherwise no WIFI ... afterwards reboot the system ! :)

@cl-netbox Are you sure no alternative free software available?

@Pandya yes I am sure ... one of my machines is an old DELL notebook with a BCM wifi card ... no other chance ! :)

@cl-netbox oh! ok :(
However, I'm thinking to ask a question regarding it on site like "Is there any free software available to work with <this> driver. not sure such question fit on AU. I think U&L or Software-recommendation.SE may be more suitable.

@Pandya there are hundreds of questions about BCM drivers on AU ... you know, I also looked for open source drivers - not available ... you NEED the BCM drivers (not only for debian / ubuntu ... also for red hat based and all other systems).

@cl-netbox oh! ok :(

@cl-netbox aha, I'll try that when it comes out :-)
@cl-netbox Because your first one was 7.10, 17.10? Got it now? :-P

@RonnieDroid nice, I guess you'll like it ! :)
@RonnieDroid aaahhh ... yes, now I know what you meant. :)

:-D
@cl-netbox is it like Ubuntu, newer software can't run on older version? Or a rolling release like Arch?
I'd really stick to Solus but, they are gonna move to QT, I don't like QT.

@RonnieDroid to be honest, I don't have such a feeling ... for me it is important to have a solid and properly working system ... :)
@RonnieDroid no, not a rolling release like arch ... more like ubuntu (every about six months a new release)

@cl-netbox you have got the right approach to computers then :-P
@cl-netbox that's cool, I'll try it out, especially that it always has that newest Gnome :-D

5:11 PM
@RonnieDroid yes, no wonder : fedora and GNOME are both owned and sponsored by red hat ... everything fits perfectly fine (mostly) ! :)

@cl-netbox really? Didn't know Gnome was owned by Redhat

@RonnieDroid fedora and GNOME are the base of RHEL ... the developers (payed by red hat) test the stuff, which later gets included in RHEL :)

@cl-netbox aha, good to know

Rinzy ! :)

Boxy!

You don't mean... the horror!... ...VBA?

No, I mean VB6.
but i wouldn't be surprised if one of my company's clients hacked our API into an Excel spreadsheet or an Access DB.

VBA and VB6 are equally horrifying.

8:50 PM
also a shocking amount of .NET code

"managed" code

whoo rooting is stressful these days

Given the mess that systemd is, I kinda understand why Android is reluctant to hand over root access to users.

Android uses systemd?

No.
That's my point.

8:52 PM
>_>

Sorry, but I felt better having taken a swing at systemd.

@ParanoidPanda @DavidFoerster @karel - please take another look at this question and reconsider your close votes. The question is about cloning a single installed package, not all of Ubuntu.

I am reluctant to criticize things so severely, but systemd is truly a trainwreck-on-wheels. A constant stream of CVEs, new features nobody wants (except a handful of misguided sysadmins), continual breakage with existing tools, etc.

Then make your own init solution if you can do it better.

Things used to be simple - you had your init and you had your system logs.

8:55 PM
Because we all know upstart is complete bloody garbage.

@KazWolfe Them's fightin' words.
I'm tempted to do just that.

@NathanOsman Yes. Yes they are.
Another reminder: If you use init scripts, I will personally find you and hand you a massive project the likes of which would require the most painful init script imaginable.

I do like the way systemd does unit files.
If only they had stopped there.
So I'm thinking something like YAML files.
(YAML is like JSON only better formatted and more human readable.)

"better formatted"

Comments.
Something JSON lacks entirely.

Q: Net Neutrality and Stack Overflow / Stack Exchange

Shog9I'm currently working with Kaitlin on a blog post that'll serve to announce this company's support for Fight for the Future's Internet-Wide Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality. I've done a fair bit of reading on this over the years, and believe this is a good cause - and one worthy of a loud and...

user136984
8:59 PM
And it's from Shog9 too!

Just use XML, @NathanOsman.

It has comments like YAML.

XML was cool in the early 2000s.

so it must be good.

9:01 PM
This is not the early 2000s.
XML may be a lot of things, but human-readable isn't one of them.
It's also unnecessarily verbose.

YAML is good for taking notes. YAML is not good for configuration files.

I disagree.
I have a 346-line YAML file open right now and it's a joy to work with.
Everything neatly spaced, data grouped in a nice hierarchy, comments describing things, etc.

iirc it's also much easier to programmatically parse JSON.

Nobody should be writing their own JSON parser unless they have a really good reason.
That's the systemd mentality, "let's roll our own xyz".

plus, really... guessing between string and number...

9:04 PM
technically doesn't JSON fit into the YAML spec?

JSON is a subset of YAML.

right

As to strings vs. ints, I tend to just use strings everywhere and parse the integers in code.
It avoids some other issues (such as 64-bit numbers, floating-point, etc.).

thing:
    configX: 15
    configY: 0

Looks simple enough to me.

9:05 PM
"Wait, can configX take a string? I don't know.... gotta go to the manual..."

@cl-netbox our football match was on fire, literally on fire 🤣 no kidding

or "is configx really a number, or is it a string?"
meanwhile in some python script: print("ConfigX value: " + conf.configX)
meanwhile in json:
{
    "thing": {
        "configX": "15",
        "configY": 0
    }
}
"Oh! configX is a string! Okay, no documentation check needed."

Just use strings for everything :P
Then parse to integers as needed.

meanwhile in Python: print("Some function: " + str(configY - 4))

That's how command-line arguments work.

9:10 PM
unnecessary complication is unnecessary.

How is that complicated?
1. always assume value is string
2. ...
3. Profit!

then what even is the point of types?

Not much really, other than the obvious fact that dicts and arrays are types too.

mandatory whitespace is never good.
plus YAML is a good way to annoy all of the TAB zealots.
