Zenity is. Yad is not.

I thought Yad was not like in 12.04 days... I honestly don't remember installing it.

yad requires installation. Zenity is default on Ubuntu, but not Lubuntu
Yad may have been installed as dependency automatically for some other programs you used

Hmmm...oh well it's not defaulted... maybe it's the PPA I'm thinking of.

Now. @KazWolfe. Back to my original question.
(Remember, before the excitement?)

yes.

12:01 AM
:)

please post the MCVE

I will repaste it now :D

#PrayForSaintPetersburg (my good deed for the day).

<TextView
    android:id="@+id/transfer_device"
    android:textAppearance="@android:style/TextAppearance.Medium"
    android:layout_width="wrap_content"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"/>

That shouldn't have a color assigned to it.

12:02 AM
That's what I'm thinking...

but do check your styles.xml to see if it's being overrridden

<resources>

</resources>
Nope.

If it's still happening, I'd take a look at any rendering code to make sure it's not adding whiteness as a parameter

Good thinking.

sorry I don't know apt that well :(

12:05 AM
one second
Run apt-cache rdepends yad, @WinEunuuchs2Unix

@NathanOsman What's the issue?

silentcast
That's what depends on yad

@Seth I just want to say again how much I love your silentcast app I've used it a few times and I'm using it again for my 20kb bash application. The gif file size is incredibly small!

It might also be using white as a default color, @NathanOsman. In which case, find how the other text renders properly (manually defined color) and copy that.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix you installed silentcast , and that depends on yad. That's how you got it. Automatically

12:06 AM
whoaaa @SergiyKolodyazhnyy we double posted!

@KazWolfe It's weird cuz I have another TextView in another layout and it works fine.

I know, and it has no different properties?

ok well now that I think about it I vaguely recall I may have learned about yad via Silentcast sheepish grin

@WinEunuuchs2Unix sheepish, you say?

@KazWolfe I'll take another look, but I don't think so.

12:08 AM
@KazWolfe uh oh I see a WOLF!!!!

@KazWolfe this is not the sheep you're looking for

@WinEunuuchs2Unix 30 second head start. Go.

sudo gedit wolf-go-away

@NathanOsman Can't you just define a color attribute for the text view in your activity's XML file?

I can but I can't figure out why it isn't using the default color...

12:09 AM

(Mint) --^

Sometimes we nuke Mint sometimes we don't.... I forget is this Mint-off or Mint-On day?

We nuke Mint when the problem can be related to Mint. We don't nuke Mint when Mint is irrelevant (for example, an issue with firefox will not be closed).

Well, we can at least close it

12:10 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I'm glad you like it :D

Ok today is Mint-Flip-a-Coin-Day

@Seth - Woah, that was a fast migrate :)

Who cares about Mint. Bacon is what matters !

Mint is always off-topic.

@Seth I don't like Silentcast I LOVE IT!!!!

12:11 AM
:)

@Seth Mint is always off-topic, but we do discreetly take Mint out some times.

Minty Bacon should be ok I think according to Serg. We could edit the question and put the word Bacon in there....

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Do that and every mod will be on your throat.
As well as every 10k user

@NathanOsman, Do you know off the top of your head how to show a file chooser dialog in Android?

@KazWolfe Oh sure get me banned just as 10K was sooo close bye bye mod tools

12:12 AM
@KazWolfe yep. it's all about quality.

i seriously just wanna get up and leave the lecture
this is depressing

nothing stopping you. People do that all the time.

In a way you left the lecture and came into AU general chat room :)
You virtually left to the right place

@WinEunuuchs2Unix We don't ban users, usually.
The mods might throw you into time-out for a year, but that's not a ban.

Remind me to post Steven Penny profile again

12:15 AM
I don't even know if a permaban is possible? (cc @Seth)

@AndroidDev For opening a file in another app?

who is "we" are you a mod now?

GRRRR. Facebook has sent me THREE "so and so has done something you absolutely don't care about" IN THE LAST FOUR HOURS

@Seth You should see Twitter's defaults...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix SE high-rep users, and I'm working on it :)

12:16 AM
God save us all :p

@NathanOsman Well, actually I would want to read it as a byte[ ], but yes

@KazWolfe define perma.. If you're really that much of a hassle I can get you put away til 2030 or so. But I can't do that myself, no.

@AndroidDev Wait, so your app is the one providing the image or opening it?

In internet years 2030 is an eternity away.

@Seth Perma as in "actually permanent, you are not allowed to come back here for as long as you live, and a bit longer than that."

12:17 AM
@Seth Remember Y2K? Wait until we overflow time_t in 2038.

no idea, but probably not.

@NathanOsman Opening it. For example, I would want to show a file chooser dialog to the user, and then read to contents of the file they chose into a byte array

The Arcnet was actually invented in the 1960's or something for Universities and Defense Department but went pretty much unused until mid 90's.

@AndroidDev Ah, Android doesn't have such a dialog :( You'll have to create a simple file chooser.

@NathanOsman What about this? It seems to me that I see a lot of apps using this: github.com/iPaulPro/aFileChooser

12:19 AM
@NathanOsman Really? I thought you could use a file chooser, and just grab the File, and then read that into a byte buffer?

Some guy created .www for world wide web and then Arcnet took off and became Internet.

@NathanOsman This isn't even the defaults.. That's as conservative as I could get it without unsubscribing from events on my posts and mentions.

@KazWolfe Other apps can send an Intent that causes your app to receive a file.

We are starting our maintenance. (RUN FOR COVER!!!)

@AndroidDev That looks like a good choice.

12:20 AM
@Feeds Does that mean chat is going down?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix No.
At least not if they do things correctly.

@NathanOsman savage af

Phew... I was trying to procrastinate writing Q&A by typing in chat.

@NathanOsman pls stop abusing pwr

@TheWanderer That's not really abuse...

@TheWanderer Duly noted.

Nathan put the plug "RUN FOR COVER" into that feed message???

12:22 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix he replaced the whole tweet

Don't worry, @TheWanderer, he created a ACE vuln in his userscript.

Wow... so much power

anyone could execute arbitrary javascript on your computer through his chat script.

@KazWolfe Le sigh.

can I just type @NathanOsman sudo rm -rf / now?

12:23 AM
@NathanOsman I WANT MY SECHAT HAXOR SHIRT

It has been fixed.

hue

Hue to you too.
@TheWanderer Hey, I preserved the original content at least.

why the name change Zachree1?... Did people have problems spelling it?

Wander is his <redacted>, iirc

12:24 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Serg changed his name too

It took me 6 months to spell Zachree1

I haven't changed mine. Costs too much to get all my identification redone.

Serg is using his full name, it was already published in Github where he linked to.

I just use autocomplete.

Me too.

12:25 AM
Oh well I can't even spell my own name... I have to look at my profile to figure it out.

Then why did you choose that name?

You are all allowed to call me "Bob" if you want.

Well, if I'm going to be professional AF , I should use my full name

Yeah I was going to say, yours isn't easy to spell either, @WinEunuuchs2Unix

I was pissed off at Windows one day so I downloaded Ubuntu and created this name.

12:26 AM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy You? Professional? HAH!
4

@NathanOsman OK, Bob, you got it

@KazWolfe Ouch.

@KazWolfe IKR ? but I'm trying

@NathanOsman Alright, Robert.

But I plan to get Windows 10 with Ubuntu Bash in 18 months so I'll change my name to WinWithUnix.

12:27 AM
Maybe "Hacker McHackface" is more appropriate given today's events.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix your name still makes no sense. why even mention eunuchs, for example?

You know what Eunuuchs are?

Yes.

Well Windows limits your potential as a man

If you say it's a pun, I swear to god I am going to get elected mod and kick you from this room. And then resign

12:28 AM
Unix gives you power.
I switched from Windows that limited me to Unix which empowered me.
See?

o.... k.

@KazWolfe things like this are the kind of things that won't get you elected..

@Seth My sense of humor is too dry, I agree.

I thought the name made sense and everyone would understand....

@KazWolfe On SU, the worst we ever threaten someone with is... mocking.

@NathanOsman there's too many bobs ._.

So Journeyman got mocked on SU and took the path to AU :D

@JourneymanGeek Kicks are nicer imo. Mockery can span a lifetime, but a kick expires after 5 minutes

@WinEunuuchs2Unix you misunderstand.
I am the one who mocks.

I was teasing....mocking in a way :p

12:31 AM
@KazWolfe mockery is not an abuse of power.

We have completed our work. No user impact detected (You can resume viewing your regularly scheduled cat pictures now.)

@Feeds RUN BACK

@JourneymanGeek No, you clearly don't know who you're talking to, so let me clue you in. I am not in danger, Serg. I am the danger. A guy opens his door and gets humiliated and you think that of me? No. I am the one who mocks!

@KazWolfe I've actually not watched past the first two episodes of that.

12:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek hey, i take power seriously even if i joke around with it a bit much.

@KazWolfe I don't take power seriously. I take the effects of it seriously ;)

I think truly powerful people don't need to discuss their power

counter-example: Trump

@luk3yx Association bonus?

not ALL sites, just the ones you join.

@AndroidDev Because I want 9 more upvotes for a badge.

People shouldn't drink, smoke or exceed the posted speed limit.

@luk3yx askubuntu.com/help/whats-reputation read under "you gain reputation when" (last paragraph in that heading)

12:36 AM

@AndroidDev ...and it's gone.

SERG

@NathanOsman Did Seth nuke it?

@KazWolfe oops, sorry. I only noticed your answer after deletion

@KazWolfe Nice redaction ;)

12:36 AM
I'll make it up to you later @KazWolfe

@AndroidDev Nope, Serg did.

;-;

@NathanOsman Wait, but Serg isn't a mod

@Seth, @AndroidDev, Thanks.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy b-but mah reversal

12:37 AM
@AndroidDev If three normal users vote to delete, it auto-deletes.

Oh. Do you have to have 10k to VTD?

Yes.

the said yesterday

12:37 AM
10k.

So is it 20 or 10?

someone lend me 245 then:p

20k just expands delete powers. You get them at 10k

or I could finish this project since March 17th and get 3 upvotes

i am happy deleted answers don't nuke rep, though.
2
that would make me very sad.
but badge...

12:39 AM
@KazWolfe +1 :)

Don't feed the wolf he's going to ban me!
lol...j/k

No, that would be an abuse of power. I need a reason to ban you, first.
On that note, onwards to 25k.

i'm questioning my sanity now

@KazWolfe @ByteCommander said nothing happens at 25k

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Welcome to the club. Other prominient members: Seth, @NathanOsman, @ThomasWard (definitely him), Mateo, and a few more.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix He's lying.

12:41 AM
ohthx

I was in this room when he hit it and upvoted him to it.
It was like in December or something.
Rather exciting really.... one of the few chat room events you don't forget.
For myself I have a bottle of champagne in the fridge for a month I'll open at 10k :D

25k really doesn't have anything in terms of mod power.
just site analytics

Oh well I wrote a bash script to scrape the site... that's enough analytics for me.
which I'm supposed to be writing the Q&A on but I'm procrastinating instead

@NathanOsman do you know much about licensing software ?

Fake lawyer here.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Well, you could always do what this guy did :P askubuntu.com/questions/758857/give-me-reputation

@AndroidDev He can't see that, lol.
Wait, how can you?

@AndroidDev Your link is "Page not found"

@KazWolfe I can't. It's in my flagging history :D

Ah.

12:48 AM
you know there is a meta post if you reveal mod tools they'll have to kill you....

there you go, @WinEunuuchs2Unix.

Thanks @KazWolfe :)

thanks for double sub-woofer thunks... mutes tab

@WinEunuuchs2Unix You're welcome.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Glad you enjoyed it.

Hey what does the "timeline" button do?

Time to replace np (no problem) with nw (no worries).

@AndroidDev Magic.
It's a mod tool, actually.

@KazWolfe I don't have it. Is that a 10k thing?

12:50 AM
Nope.

But you aren't a mod

You can't get it from rep, actually. I sorta hacked it in :)

Care to share? :)

here's a screenshot:

Kaz is author of "Wolf Bot"

12:51 AM
he googled it

that's what we all do lol

@KazWolfe Cool! So how did you "hack it in"?

it's just a consolidated history of (almost) everything that happened with a post. It doesn't show you anything you can't see anyways (the real mod timeline does)
It's a URL assigned to every post. Like how /revisions is a thing, so is /timeline

@KazWolfe Ah. So it's like the hack that allowed <10k users to edit deleted questions?

12:53 AM
somewhat similar, yes.
I do get to see review audits from here, though.

Q: List of unlinked pages on Stack Exchange sites

rightfoldHere is a list of special, unlinked pages (they may be linked in questions and answers) on Stack Exchange sites. Most pages listed here are work in progress or legacy. Currently, this list is incomplete. If you know more of them, add them to the answer. Related Hidden features of Stack Exchange...

in short, it has some use, but honestly not that much more than what you can get from poking around,

@KazWolfe But if I append /timeline and hit enter, it redirects back to the question?

just read that @AndroidDev

Why don't you port bash to Android.... that could be umm.... time consuming :)
After all hobbies should be all-time-consuming ~~~!!!!

somehow i suspect that already exists

I don't recall reading about bash for Android, only linux, windows and apple.
I think Android is based on Linux Kernel 3.13 or something like that though.

I did
Now I have to lobby google to implement yad too :D

1:09 AM
won't work, no gtk on Android

Yeah Gnome No Go.

shell@hammerhead:/ $ echo $SHELL
/system/bin/sh
android has a bash-like default shell

i think i want Pho. I am frustrated and hungry and classes going downhill, and basically broke even though I work my buttt off

Wow my investment in learning Bash might pay off in the long run... all four corners of the techni-verse are covered.

i deserve a small warm bowl of happiness at least called Pho

Unix-Windows-Apple-Android

android's shell is not bash
it's bash-like

unix is not bash...it's bash like too :p

@KazWolfe bash-like but not bash

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Unix is an OS not a shell.
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Right.
iOS, however, does run Bash.

I thought I muted this tab... oh right I rebooted :(
Android is a an OS, not a shell
I was thinking 2 days ago the best part about bash is the "Born Again" part.
I do identify with the fact it's spelled "Bourne".

1:17 AM
nice thing about bash is it's features, which it borrowed a lot from korn shell.
readline support is nice,too

Wasn't there an original shell for unix though?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix there was, written by Ken Thompson. Later The guy whose last name is Bourne wrote his shell which became standard /bin/sh

The first Unix shell was the Thompson shell, sh, written by Ken Thompson at Bell Labs and distributed with Versions 1 through 6 of Unix, from 1971 to 1975.[2] Though rudimentary by modern standards, it introduced many of the basic features common to all later Unix shells, including piping, simple control structures using if and goto, and filename wildcarding. Though not in current use, it is still available as part of some Ancient UNIX Systems.
^^^ From Wiki not me

Korn shell was next, and it sought to improve what Bourne shell did and didn't. It was best one at the time

Some day we'll have to have the "Computer Awards" and give Ken Thompson a trophy.
We'll throw a sheep to Kaz Wolfe or something :D

1:21 AM
I think he already has a medal.

There are computer medals?

Good ole' billy boy in action

wireless ADB may be nice, but it's a pain when I need to copy a 50MB app

@TheWanderer Well if you use 5Ghz it's not that bad

Your router doesn't get 30 MB/s.?

But yeah I hear you

@NathanOsman school

1:32 AM
Lame.

weirdly, it's actually faster than home
I usually get ~500KB/s here, but at home it's more like 200

Then buy a better router :)

@AndroidDev the WAP at home is Ubiquiti
you can't get much better

I highly recommend the RT-N66U
@TheWanderer oh

These are 802.11ac

1:34 AM
Meh, I have never needed AC wireless. N-450 is sufficient for me :)

well if ac is giving me 200KB/s, imagine what N would be

@TheWanderer all that doesn't mean your ISP won't be a bottleneck

Probably faster, since AC uses 2.4 and 5 simultaneously, doesn't it?
So if N only uses 2.4, it would be faster
(Assuming range is the issue)

It works pretty good.
No, it doesn't get 3.2 Gbps.
That's just sneaky marketing.

@TheWanderer You could get one of these... Supposedly it can extend the signal to nearly a mile (without obstructions). Honestly though, I would actually be uneasy being in the same room with that thing

1:43 AM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy this is LAN

Wait, how is that even leagal when the maximum allowed TxPower by the FCC is like 1W?

range isn't the issue
I'm like 20 feet from the WAP

Then how the heck are you only getting 200KB/sec?

do you think I know?

Actually you're the only person I know (but never met) who has flown to China.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix my mom paid for the trip basically. I could never save enough for the ticket

A plot to get you married and out of the house no doubt :p

I'm working for 9.5 per hour. I can't move anywhere

Fight for fifeteen?

Raising the minimum wage is not a good idea

ok Donald Trump :p

The problem is, if you raise the minimum wage, then prices for consumers increase as well.

The problem is you create artificial jobs for people and the prices of houses double.
That has nothing to do with minimum wage and decent standard of living.... those people are making 80K and their houses are 1 million.
I didn't know you were into politics and economics... interesting :)

Eh, not really

1:54 AM
Why did you delete that?

I am using the mobile chat and I accidentally clicked delete instead of edit

Yeah there was nothing untoward there.
I think it was "That too" or something.

I thought you worked in a lab?

and i have to be a student to work there. If university kicks me out, i can't work there
