12:00 AM
I just ran out of memory.
And I have 16 GB :P
Why is gnome-software running...?
Gmail in a single tab is using 300+ MB of RAM.
RIP computer.

Let me guess - it was running in chrome ?

Oh of course.

12:17 AM
So how do I become productive

drink coffee

Already do

drink more coffee

OK

I would actually say drink less coffee.

12:21 AM
I think I should drink beer instead lol

-.-

If you want something healthier, orange juice is good.

1:20 AM
@Zanna @Serg on the video duration Q, did you two not cast a VTC or did you retract if you did?

1:41 AM
@NathanOsman That's normal (300+MB RAM) for gmail.

It may be normal, but it's still obscene.

Yeah and I'm only using 2% of the free 15 GB storage... 320 MB of RAM used.
There were some websites with user comments allowed that would crash the machine because each tab would go over 1 GB and keep growing. But they fixed them after I posted screen shots here in AU.

@muru i didn't cast, only posted a comment. Later as pointed out in chat, the questions differ slightly, since OP in the one i commented, wants full path to filea
*files

Ah..

Best Buy wants $200 for a 20 ft. HDMI cable. Walmart has one for $22 but the wait is until March 15 so I ordered from States for $10 with a slightly longer wait plus got a 25ft cat5 cable for 5 bucks. My 15 ft HDMI cable bit the dust but the longer ones I ordered allow me to run around the walls instead of under the throw rug in front of the TV.
London Drugs also sells crazy expensive HDMI cables. When I bought my TV they wanted to know if I wanted to buy a 6 ft HDMI cable for 20 bucks, I gave them a funny look because they are a buck at the dollar store :p

1:50 AM
Somehow I don't think I did the meme right...
But that still looked dumb enough to post here.
:D

haha that could be interpreted as you calling your on-line friends stupid :p

But we iz so sthmart.

smart enough to make a meme...well you at least not me

@Zanna We posted same link : askubuntu.com/q/419823/295286 I'll delete mine for now, but as pointed out earlier in chat, the question is slightly different because OP wants full path to files.
SCBB's answer probably will be sufficient, but not tested

> .field private final mUpdateHanlder:Landroid/os/Handler;
this line does not make me have very much faith in LG's engineers

What do you think "LG" stands for?

ur mum

don't have one.
seriously though?
oh i see
you're googling the alternate to
"Life's Good" :p
without google iirc it's "Lucky Goldstar"

2:48 AM
Sometimes Android Studio is smart.
Other times it is:
/facepalm
Oooooooooh.
Hang on. It was me that was stupid.
I see what it was trying to tell me now but the error is a bit unclear.

Q: Image link cleanup for HTTPS

muruAs you may have read by now, the roadmap to HTTPS will involve some manual fixing of dead links to images and uploading images from other sources to imgur. Sooner or later this is going to come our way, so let's get cracking now. The SE devs have a list of posts for MSE, but for the rest of us, t...

Q: Does "Disk Operating System" imply that there was a "non-disk" Operating System?

hawkeyeIn the 1980's at primary school we saw MS DOS and DR DOS competing before Windows 3.1 and subsequent releases took over that space. At home we had Apple II's which booted up to a BASIC prompt. On these we ran PRO-DOS and CP/M. 30 years later my kids hardly know what a disk is. That made me t...

Nice question

4:24 AM
^^^ I don't think so... disk = non-volatile storage. All operating systems are recorded on non-volatile storage - reel to reel tape, cassette, floppy, hard disk, usb, rom, eeprom heck even punch cards. I spent 15 minutes reading the answers, they all missed the BIOS is the first operating system booted, Grub is the second operating system, DOS is the thrid operating system and Windows is the fourth operating system which presents GUI to user with option of a DOS (cmd.exe) box.

Q: How to get all processes running on each CPU core in Ubuntu?

RohanilI am working on Ubuntu14.04 server and it has 48 CPU cores. I am seeing there is high CPU usage on one core from sar information. So I want to know which processes are running on that core. How should I get all processes running on each CPU core in Ubuntu?

Well not necessarily. What about PXE?
Isn't that volatile storage?

4:55 AM
@muru I retracted >_<
Forgot to refresh the page and delete my comment, what an idiot

5:30 AM
And with that awk question I reached 44k ^_^ / Wooo

Congrats!

thanks ^^
Sometimes I think back to when I only had a few hundred points of rep and 10k and 20k seemed astronomical . . .
And it all still does seem astronomical. Sometimes it's hard to believe I got this far o.o

5:50 AM
Is it my network or the site really takes loooooong time to load posts ?

@Serg maybe that ddos against SO is still going on

could be. I wonder which botnet mafia got pissed off at SO , and more importantly - why ?

Q: How to set a local password on Ubuntu server16.04 with Kerberos authentication?

Taiki BesshoI use a Ubuntu server16.04 with Kerberos authentication on an ActiveDirectory server. My user account on the Ubuntu doesn't have a local password,I deleted it once, but have a Kerberos password, so I want to add a local password for my account in case the ActiveDirectory server is down. 6:39 AM
wow it's SUPER annoying going through the non-https SEDE query and finding loads of hostmar stuff I can't fix
I wish I'd nuked all those bit.ly links now

I am willing to host the image if need be.

that would be heroic...

I can do qms.li/software.
That should be easy enough to remember :D
And I have automated SSL certs for the domain.
However, I'd want to talk to Marco first. If he can add HTTPS to his, I'd just as rather use that.

yeah that would be better
I will watch meta :)

6:55 AM
@Serg lol. It does, dosen't it?

Q: want to create a cron job to play video file?

vishal naikBut its showing --> no crontab for vishal - using an empty one crontab: installing new crontab any suggestions how to workout ?

So apparently it is possible to do Android => PC transfers with NitroShare on Ubuntu if you create a file /etc/avahi/services/nitroshare.service with the following contents:
<?xml version="1.0" standalone='no'?>
<!DOCTYPE service-group SYSTEM "avahi-service.dtd">
<service-group>
        <name replace-wildcards="yes">NitroShare on %h</name>
        <service protocol="ipv6">
                <type>_nitroshare._tcp</type>
                <port>40818</port>
                <txt-record>uuid=dummy</txt-record>
        </service>
        <service protocol="ipv4">
                <type>_nitroshare._tcp</type>
                <port>40818</port>
                <txt-record>uuid=dummy</txt-record>
(And you'll need avahi-daemon installed.)

Ok, i think I should stop editing my answer because my interwebs are painfully slow

@NathanOsman: Do you still need help with your electronics problem from ~13 h ago?

I sort of gave up...
I can get voltage across the battery and voltage across the power button connectors.
But no combination of shorting wires seems to work.
I'm wondering if the battery's voltage is too low.
And I don't have a voltmeter to check.
:(

ugh oh, panic mode engaged
my tty consoles are all blacked out

@NathanOsman: Ah, too bad. I guess you need to wait for a voltmeter then. Simple multimeters are cheap enough though. :-)

8:44 AM
@videonauth sorry to tell you this but your answer misses the goal of what OP is trying to achieve. askubuntu.com/a/772120/295286

@Serg he won't get the ping - leave a comment

8:56 AM
@Zanna yup, posted, and unfortunately had to downvote

Yeah... haven't seen him for a while...
hope he's ok
@Serg if the answer is that it can't be done, then I think you should post that as an answer, if you want to?
thanks @DavidFoerster I retracted my flag

9:34 AM
@DavidFoerster askubuntu.com/a/890826/15811 2nd paragraph 1st sentence seems odd to me
"You'll use all encrypted files if you lose the key or password."
Did you mean "loose"??

@Rinzwind Thanks for the catch. Though I mean "lose".

you could set the key loose to roam freely XD

@Zanna if we are talking about the deb\zip question, then I don't want to post since I am not 100% sure.I am not very proficient in package management
Off to sleep. Bye

I don't see how it would be possible to magically convert an archive of source files into a compiled deb.

@terdon Everything's possible with the magic of transmutation. ;-)

9:41 AM
@Serg goodnight :)

Where are the php-fpm documentation?

@DavidFoerster Let me rephrase. I don't see how it would be possible to easily do this in a generic way that can be put into an answer. Of course you can do it if you have the knowledge and a specific archive, but a generalized solution?

@terdon I was jesting based on a D&D trope.

Ah. That transmutation. D'oh!

10:03 AM
hi everyone
I've got a "idk what the hell is wrong with my server"-style of issue... that kind of question is usually frowned upon here, right?

@Siguza Not necessarily. Not if you give enough information.

@terdon well, I'm not sure that's possible... part of the issue is that sshd doesn't start - I can only access stuff by mounting the recovery system
I basically have a cryptic blackbox now, and a list of things I've tried that didn't help/provide no info

@Siguza There's nothing off topic in what you describe. it all depends on whether you can give enough info for anyone to be able to make an educated guess.
So yeah, show us what you've tried, how it failed, what error messages you get, what symptoms you have in general etc.
What OS is this, by the way?

Ubuntu 16.10
otherwise I would've gone to unix.se or sf...

Then go for it. Worst case scenario, your question is too vague to answer.

10:17 AM
aight, thanks

@Siguza Fair enough, but you'd be surprised at how many people post here regardless.

oh, I know
I'm an SO regular, we get enough of those there ;)

@terdon I know a way!

Waiting for the punchline. . .

no punchline!
Just tell someone else to do it :=)

@muru I just noticed (oblivious as ever) that EP's query only looks for bit.ly/software-small. Fortunately all the software-large ones are in the http query. Should I just leave them for now?

@Zanna Until we have a solution for the HTTPS problem I think we should leave the package icon links alone
Dammit. The CMs could have given the mods a heads-up about the HTTPS image changes

I think it only got featured because of your comment!

@muru its mentioned on MSE
and you do watch that right?

@JourneymanGeek yeah, I asked that post to be featured. However, that's not what I'm talking about. We recently had the devs change a bunch of links wholesale from bit.ly to another URL shortener.

Q: Plenty of broken image links

E.P.This bug was detected in 2011: the original policy was to use software centre images from bit. ly/ software-small, but that mysteriously broke for some reason that doesn't really matter at this point. A quick query points to >500 posts that still link to this image, and which look sort of like th...

If we'd known this was going to happen, we could have scrambled to get HTTPS support on the other shortnener before they made this change.

@muru ah
@muru I think this may be a better topic for the other room
Grownup talk and all that ;p

1:45 PM
:(

Please grow up.

I can't

Any news on veg pro tem thingie?

kind of yeah

@Zanna Ooh, applied for pro-tem modery?

1:47 PM
Oh yeah, that reminds, back to cleaning up Vim

@Zanna yeah?

in The Greenhouse, 14 hours ago, by Riker
mod emails have been sent out :D
that's all the news there is

oh, bad news then

why bad?

No news is bad news :/

1:50 PM
who for?
that one is smiling

Never mind.

Oli
Modern SSDs are ridiculous.

@Zanna I totally missed the mail when I got it
worth searching through your email for (presumably) Robert Cartiano

mod hype

@Oli Ooh, what's that tool?

Oli
2:03 PM
@terdon Just gnome disks

@JourneymanGeek I do that, but, I don't think I did this time :)

Oli
palimpsest? Apparently not. It used to be called that but most of the DEs have a disk management whatsit that includes some basic benchmarking.

@Oli Ah, and I guess you run it from a live session?

Oli
@terdon That was done from an active session, it's just a read benchmark
But yeah, you need to be able to unmount for rw tests

@Oli Meaning you'd first run it in a live session, exported somehow and then imported the results?

2:11 PM
@Zanna so you are a mod now?

@edwinksl nope

:/

@edwinksl apparently not yet

nothing new anyways :D

I think secretely, @Zanna is a second account of one of our mods.

2:20 PM
rofl

agree

2:35 PM
@JacobVlijm There are only two mods. The rest of us are all socks of Oli or foss.

2:50 PM
hmmm... I wish that comment on my answer about how inaccurate it is would go away

@Zanna Is it inaccurate? What answer?
About Ctrl+C?

yeah!
I don't know but it doesn't say what they are complaining about any more

@terdon Haha, there are only two mods. You :)

as far as I can tell anyway... argh late for work

@Zanna then stick around a bit longer :)

2:53 PM
@Zanna No, your last edit (I had read it before it) is indeed better (they had a point about your earlier versions). I'll clear up the comments.

3:05 PM
Thanks!
& thanks for your comment
I shouldn't have answered the question at all I think haha

@Zanna How is that going to get you rep?

unicorn rep

@Zanna Don't see why not, it's morphed into a perfectly decent answer.

;)

4:12 PM
This is wrong: if you press Ctrl+C and the shell is in the foreground, the kernel will send a SIGINT to the shell. — psmears 34 mins ago

mm, pretty sure that's not true.
strange.

That was what I thought, but I changed it this morning after @terdon commented
Now I am confused
Quite tempted to delete it entirely

@Zanna You mean the comment I deleted?

Yeah

@Zanna Well, I deleted it for a reason ;)
Sorry, I thought I'd been quick enough that you wouldn't have noticed. I realized I don't understand the internals quite as well as I thought and butted out.
In any case, the current incarnation of your answer seems fine to me.

4:23 PM
@Zanna this is a complex and confusing topic. Keep the answer, try to polish it and research it later
also, goo meow ning

@terdon omg I thought you deleted it because you saw I had edited it! I'm such an idiot
I rolled it back for now
@Serg likewise

Hello :)

lololol, the facebook quizzes are such carp
I saw a post on my friend's facebook "How would you look like if you were opposite sex" ( should say gender but ok, semantics)
picture shows a young white man with lovely beard, aka hipster uncle, as I'd call it
problem is . . . my friend, she is Ethiopian

TIL changing your gender could change your skin color :P

"2 for 1 deal, change your gender and race"
i should try that quiz
i wanna be a sassy Chinese 白富美 girl.....#serg2017

4:39 PM
@Zanna Argh. . . That's the one I objected to :) The issue is that you state that bash won't terminate itself if it gets sent a SIGINT. That isn't true. The reason bash doesn't die is that it isn't sent a SIGINT, the Ctrl+C sends the SIGINT to whatever is running in the foreground. However, if you were to send SIGINT to bash, for example using kill $pidOfBash, it would indeed exit.
I deleted my comment because I realized I didn't know the exact details about how the Ctrl+C is handled (who translates that to sending SIGINT), so I couldn't explain as well as I'd like.

i was currious what is the.noise coming from downtown, but then i remember it is 'day without women' march in downtown
also, @Zanna happy international women's day !
and other AU ladies too

I missed that? Omg...
@terdon I deleted my answer :)
@Serg thanks :D

Q: Screen freeze and sound loop while watching videos

user219825Hello I get some issues when I watch videos on my linux pc. @Zanna @terdon well, if we are doing review of answers here, I would like to know opinions/onions on my answer about the command-completion:askubuntu.com/a/890791/295286 Which parts should I improve, expand on , discuss in more depth ? Serious question
No constructive input ? anything ?

4:58 PM
@Serg constructive input ? no, impossible for me ... but, anything ? yes : another +1 from me ... Hi Sergiy ! :)

@Serg Looks fine to me. +1
@Zanna That seems a mite extreme. Why would you do that!?

Sorry I'm at work... I was the first person to upvote your answer. I think it's great @Serg
@terdon doesn't feel right. Don't feel sure about it now

OK :3 But I do wonder if I need to improve anything. Maybe I can ask in U&L room, perhaps Stephane or Gilles will point something out

@Zanna I'd undelete it. If anything is wrong, people are sure to let you know ;)
@Serg Do so. I certainly don't know anything above what you already mention.

5:17 PM
Have you seen my latest answer to this question -> askubuntu.com/questions/885422/… @terdon ? Do you have an idea why this gets only one upvote (from OP together with accept and a bounty today) although it was on the featured tab and I could help the user to solve his graphics problem ? Compared to the command line topic from @Serg and @Zanna above (both got more than 10 upvotes) it looks a bit poor, so I'm wondering. :)

How in the world would I know?

@cl-netbox it got a bounty though :D that's good

@terdon Long AU experience ... good evening terdon ! :)

Note that the question you answered has 174 views while the CLI one we discussed before has 3733 views. That is probably all the explanation possible.

@terdon so that question we discussed is over 1337 now :p

5:19 PM
Note that you also have a rep cap.

#sergpuns
wheeee palindrome !

@terdon ah okay ... so command line topics seem to be way more popular ... that explains it ! :)

Not really. Don't generalize: that specific CLI question had more views than that specific GUI question.
Not surprising since the CLI one describes a very common issue while the one you answered is very specific to the OP (despite the fact that your answer is generic).

@terdon yes ... unfortunately many graphics issues are specific because users have different hardware and the solution is often based on generic instructions. :)

@Zanna editing question . . .how do I boldify text within ">" quote block ?

5:28 PM
The CLI/scripting stuff isn't very popular at all on AU. Hell, we keep having to convince people not to VTC them as off topic! This is more of a GUI oriented than CLI oriented site.
@Serg As you would anywhere else: **

@terdon doesn't seem to work. Maybe I have too many spaces in there ?

Try Ctrl+B if in case?

@Serg Where?

@terdon What ? you're kiddin' ... look at @JacobVlijm @muru @Serg and yourself for example ... whole lotta CLI stuff ... hahaha :)

@Serg Ah, no, you have a code block in a quote block, you can't bold in code blocks.
Not even nested ones.

5:31 PM
My rep is mostly out of config stuff @cl-netbox
That's pretty GUI if you ask me.
Got bored of answering same stuff so I helped make a tool that helps people answer similar questions in the future.

@cl-netbox And a whole lot of answers as well. I dont' have hard data but I would guess at least 2/3ds of all AU questions are somehow GUI related.
Probably much more.

Convinced @jokerdino @terdon ! :D

@cl-netbox yeah, compared to U&L there's far less command-line / bash type of stuff on Ask Ubuntu
But then again, U&L scope is different

There's very little GUI stuff on U&L, really. Most of the regulars are CLI geeks.

@jokerdino and I thought you received a minimum of one UV for every goal of the Citizens ... :D :D :D

5:37 PM
Also there's far more IT/sysadmin people, from all sorts of backgrounds. Ask Ubuntu for the most part has casual users

@cl-netbox woop

@cl-netbox I have mixed experiences, I have seen quite brilliant cli answers, with only one or two votes here, but also hysterically upvoted ones; correct ones, but insanely simple. Even for me :). The script answers which are highly appreciated are mostly the ones that add options to the desktop GUI. Although the answers are scripted, I think we should therefore count them as GUI.

Yeah. I don't think any of the U&L regulars doesn't work with Linux professionally.
Not necessarily as a sysadmin or coder but also at work.
Well, OK, strugee, but he just finished high school :)

@JacobVlijm true ... do you think the users who read them try your scripts out by copy and paste ? Good evening Jacob ! :)

Hey see-ell

5:44 PM
By the way @terdon, today I installed the latest stable NVIDIA drivers from RPM Fusion rawhide and was prepared for a disaster, but guess what ? It was just as easy and successful as in ubuntu to install them ... fedora is really catching up ! :)

Good for Fedora!

@terdon and for their users ... and the open source nouveau drivers are getting better and better for all systems. :)

@terdon raises hand . . . I don't . . . plus I'm an electrical engineering major . . .

@Serg Have you seen my GHO message with the python stuff link ? :)

@Serg You're a student, you don't actually work with anything professionally yet. And I haven't gotten used to considering you a U&L regular, it's too soon! :P

5:53 PM
@terdon what's the criteria for being considered regular :p ?

Umm. Eh. Runs away

@cl-netbox yes, I have. I just didn't get chance to reply

What especially is a U&L regular @terdon ? :)

I need to get better about answering emails, messages
well . . . i damn wish i could work with Linux professionally . . . or at least anything that I do on regular basis, like scripting, python, app development

What a shame. No diamond for Zanna in Veg.SE :(
Votes on nomination not enough to secure..

6:09 PM
@jokerdino What is that diamond you mention about ?

More time to fix our non-https image links isn't it ;)

@cl-netbox temporary mod.

interesting

@jokerdino and what is it good for to be a temporary mod ?

@jokerdino Huh?

I thought SE chose the mods, but in any case, she has as many as the next best candidate so what makes you think she won't be chosen?

@Zanna Good evening Zanna ! :) How are you ?

@jokerdino Yes. She and one other user are tied for 1st place.

@terdon Just being hopeful. That's all.

6:12 PM
You hope she isn't selected?

Uh, the other way around.

they already chose

Ah! Now I see.

@cl-netbox very good thanks, how about you?

@cl-netbox It's good to help the community you like, I guess?

6:15 PM
@Zanna everything fine, got newest NVIDIA drivers installed perfectly in fedora and received a bounty on AU for my latest graphics answer today. :)

@terdon yeah.

@jokerdino I understood your message to mean there's an automatic way of selecting among the nominated names.

Clearly not.
meh goes out

@cl-netbox great stuff

@Zanna Thank you :)

6:21 PM
@jokerdino :(

Dear Microsoft. If you could make one thing that doesn't suck, please let it be your Outlook suite
Because right now . . . the amount of slowness it has . . . makes me just wanna tear out all my hair and go live in the mountains as hermit

@Serg hahaha :D
Goodbye :)
