12:04 AM
I found a bug in le Android.

@NathanOsman ooo, I did something fun in bash once, it detected if you connect a android phone via bluetooth and then sends a file of your choosing to it auto github.com/mateosalta/BLARG even allows multiple sends at the same time
aka "bluecasting"

That is super clever.

gosh i dont wanna go to this lecture
plus my lower back seems to be acting up again
i'd rather write java than deal with calculus
5

it kept track of already connected addresses by putting them in a file, then cat'ing to see if they were still in that list

12:14 AM
@NathanOsman whoa, a bug in an OS????
whaaa...

@Zacharee1 Never mind, it was my mistake.

yeah but it's no Keanu Reeves

ok, makes sense now: .i had two accepts, so 15*2 and rep cap. That is 230 for whole utc day. All checks out now

12:23 AM
I feel like I need to make a general-purpose Android app now
@Serg yurp

@Zacharee1 DO ET

but what

well, look for an app that you wish you'd have and make it

wat

That's what I am going to do with my super secret project

12:24 AM
k

A phone itself is already a bottle opener, you don't need an app for that O.o

@Serg Your KILL write up today resembles a problem I've been grappling with and I've just posted as a question: askubuntu.com/questions/891074/…

@Mateo lol

@Serg hehe I suggested two accepts earlier :p

12:34 AM
ooh an upvote

@WinEunuuchs2Unix let me know what you think of that answer

@Serg I didn't know noop (:) returned true. That could come in handy. In the application I would be grepping the PID's on "display-auto-brightness" and would be returned multiple PIDs. I'm not sure how to decipher them. The child is usually parent id +1 though because they are spawned so quickly. I'll have to study this.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix not necessarily PID +1. PID's don't have specific order
$ ps -e  -o pid,ppid,command | grep 16180
16180 1973 /bin/bash ./simple_example.sh
16181 16180 /bin/bash ./simple_example.sh
17265 6909 grep --color=auto 16180
17266 16180 sleep 3
See ? Child PID's all differ

@Serg In the few times I've tested it today the sudo /path/to/script was one ID and the child bin/bash was +1

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
coincidence

12:46 AM
Three times coincidence though :)
When I type sudo script name there is no sleep involved it's instantaneous almost. Granted not guaranteed. I was hoping for a ps parameter that would lump the two together somehow.

1:01 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix well . . . lump how ?

@Serg I'm not sure. I found out why cron job wasn't showing up in that question though. sudo needed to be used to see cron jobs. I've updated the question but there are sill missing pieces. This is giving me a headache :(

$ ps -ef | grep cron
root 896 1 0 09:47 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/cron -f
I didn't need sudo

That's helpful thanks... On your edit I wasn't saying pstree didn't show the program I was saying ps didn't show the program... the -ef is the solution.
This answers how to find out if the program might be running cause it shows cron reboot is still running. But it might be running something else other than the program
Only pstree shows the program name.
And you are right it's not always child process = parent process + 1. The coincidence has been broken just now in my testing.
It's past 5pm so I'll +1 you now cause you aren't capped anymore :p

:) nice, thanks

1:33 AM
Sorry for delay was emptying dryer and folding clothes. Hope you have another vote cap day tomorrow. I think you get a medal after five of them.

Already got bronze for 5 times. I need to get 200 times rep cap, to get legendary badge
only 3 awarded on AU
I'm on 45/200 right now

Yikes I thought asking 30 questions was a tough task. Yours sounds insurmountable. I think I've only been rep capped twice.

+65 already, ye . . .

@Serg I thought of a good idea for Zenity and Bash to display all existing kernels and use select which ones to delete (I have over 20). But you were looking for Python projects and that might be a good one for you to consider.
I'll still do mine in bash and zenity of course because I need the practice.
@Serg You have an unfair advantage collecting points from polar bear lovers and bacon lovers based on your avatar :p

1:53 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix might be a good one but probably will have to do it on weekend.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Dont forget that i have advantage with Chinese and Russian.speakers
lol

@Serg I think @Pilot6 has the Russian speakers all locked up and his points tally is like #3 behind @Zanna and @Muru. The latter who has all the India votes and Japan votes locked up :p
I should have all the Edmonton votes locked up which is probably two shy people at the library hiding out for the NSA....haha
Did you guys hear about #Vault7 where CIA hacked Samsung F8000 Smart TV's when powered off to keep LED unlit whilst they activated TV set to listen to people in the living room? Wikileaks is releasing CIA's and MI6's dirty laundry today.

2:08 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix yeah heard about it yesterday. Cool stuff, more work for security researchers

@Serg I should sue the Canadian government for not letting me donate 20 bucks to Wikileaks.

whoa whoa whoa
no need to use profanity
the post got nuked pretty fast too

I know American's aren't allowed to donate to wikileaks either via paypal. I wonder if Russians are allowed to donate. I should post that question on politics SE.
^^^ ugg those leftist extremist fascist nazi fundamentalist radicals mods won't let me post there. I hope somebody crashes there website FOREVER! Oh well I'll have to post my wikileaks question on Al-Jazeera.
DONE. As much as I don't like Al-Jazeera they are still one of the few main stream media outlets that let you post comments :)

2:27 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix are you having fun?

i wonder if i should stop worrying about my classes and just do bare minimum while focusing more on linux stuff

@Zacharee1 Changing the world one byte at a time :p
I dunno Serg I think you should go all out on school and ignore us but I've said that before. I agree with your philosophy of writing new projects on weekends that's how I do it too. The zenity / bash delete old kernels project I'll do this weekend but I'm letting it ferment in my mind now.
I find thinking about it and doing nothing... then sleeping on it and dreaming about it as it were... then repeat... repeat.... repeat.... works best for me.
At work every warehouse receiver has their own system of receiving... heck even their own ways of counting... I guess in Software Development we probably have lots of our own unique systems too.
Uggh.... You meant to click "X" on your LO Write window but you did it on your chrome window by mistake and now lost 10 open tabs :(

3:04 AM
My wife asked why I carried a gun around the house. I told her:fear of CIA. She Laughed, I laughed, the Amazon Echo Laughed. I shot the Echo
Hahahaha

lol

haha... don't know what Amazon Echo is... but it's still funny :p

It's a little box that listens for commands.
You can tell it to order stuff by voice, etc.

Basically a Siri that actually works

Android x86 is... well... it doesn't really work all that well in VirtualBox.
I wonder if I'd have better success with qemu.

just do RemixOS

RemixOS goes as far back as Jelly Bean?

lolno

Because I need Jelly Bean.

what are you doing on JB?

3:15 AM
First thing I did with my Android phone is turn off google voice and everything else remotely microphone related... I hate having my voice recorded or picture taken

(For compatibility testing.)

why are you supporting JB?

Because why not?

and can't you just use Android Studio emulators?

Yes, but they have their own internal network.
I can't figure out how to connect them to a bridged network.

3:16 AM
My first latptop with a webcam still has faded masking tape over camera. :D

I'm not paranoid enough to tape my webcam but if I was, I'd rather just disconnect it than put tape over it :P
Heck, I disconnected the webcam in my laptop by accident during a repair operation.

Do you know school principals in the USA watch high school students in their bedrooms wtih secret webcam software installed on school laptops issued to students??? That's like violation of children rights or something!

@WinEunuuchs2Unix It's a violation of a lot more than that.
BUT.
That's what happens when you have someone else issuing the computers.
It's far better to just get your own device.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I'm pretty sure most people close their laptops

I'm not going to rip my laptop lid apart to disconnect webcam... masking tape is soooo much easier... plus with my luck the LCD screen wouldn't work anymore.

3:19 AM
my school is trying to deprecate school laptops

Personally, I think school laptops is a terrible idea.
Like 100% horrible terrible.

@Zacharee1 I only close my laptop when I suspend it on the way to work, or suspend it before bedtime.

a lot of the laptops are missing the CD drives
I guess we have a lot of kleptomaniacs
because Dell Latitude CD-ROMs are pretty much worthless

It's the easiest thing to remove, I guess?

one screw.

3:21 AM
the batteries on the tethered ones are gone too, but I think that's on purpose

what's a tethered CD?
I thought tethering was for wifi signals / hotspots

tethered laptop lolol

So basically they stole a laptop and you called it a tethered laptop?

tethered as in someone actually used the Kensington lock

ARGH.

3:25 AM
yes

Why do no Android images boot in VirtualBox anymore?
This is the second one.

LET THE ANGER CONSUME YOU
where's @ThomasWard

Oh well one of my laptops has the Kensington lock. So basically stealing a tethered laptop = stealing a laptop that can't be stolen :p

no one stole the laptop!

ok you win!
So I want to order something from Amazon but I have two problems.
1: it is sold out.
2: it's doesn't go on sale until December 2017
Minor problem is it's 200 bucks, but it has a camera so it's all good.
Question? How can something be sold out that isn't being made for a year almost?
Oh yeah... you can drive it using your smartphone which sounds like fun

3:31 AM
update: my interwebs still suck. CIA is probably are scaling the US traffic because of Vault

#Vault7 according to Russia Today
Hi @muru I put in those code blocks per request.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I know, seen and upvoted

@muru Oh you didn't have to vote, but thanks :)
That ps stuff gets me confused sometimes.... well ok most times :p

Woot!
It runs in qemu.
Who needs VirtualBox.
Hmm... I am staring at a blank screen... ಠ_ಠ

Just to let you know your typing / spelling is perfect sight unseen.

4:13 AM
I can never seem to get the bridge settings right...
I always end up disconnecting myself from the network.

Q: Log in as unix user using password stored in htpasswd

r00tI know this is possible to log in vsftpd using htpasswd (libpam-pwdfile) but in every tutorials I read, they use virtual user. My users are not virtual, they are local user I added using "adduser" command, I would like to allow them to log into the FTP server, but using password stored in htpass...

Wooo, eggscepted !

Woot. Got a working bridge interface up.
Now, to connect everything...
I think I did it.
Fingers crossed.

4:30 AM
Dual Core Processors crossed

Nope.

I wonder if I should write an answer to this one question that is basically homework . . . or go take a nap

Argh. Didn't work.

I can write the answer, but i kinda don't want to

There are a lot of homework questions in AU I think.

4:31 AM
eth0: cannot assign requested address

not as much as on SO

Anyone familiar with bridged networking?

An answer on SO seems to get more votes though

Not me . . . All I can recommend is sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager @NathanOsman

Lol, nope. That won't work.

4:34 AM
My bridging experience was probably two 1200 baud modems 30 years ago :p

\o/
I fixed it.
ifconfig $1 0.0.0.0 promisc up
^--- apparently that's the command I was missing
I have no idea what it does but it worked :P

you put your host into promiscuous mode
i think

I think the $1 is replaced by the tap device when run.

probly

So. That's good. Now, back to what I was doing...
Down to 163 MB of free space...

Screen shot taken thanks :)

11:17 AM
@terdon Yes. A stressed out Panda? Hilarious!

I'm about ready to go to work so I don't want to read the Ubuntu article and get stressed out all day. I'll wait until this weekend when I can read it and drink myself silly out of frustration.

Okay, I didn't read all the articles. But, so far. THE US Government, can access EVERYTHING YOU HAVE. EVERYTHING

@blade19899 Huh? Where did you see that? All I see in the link you posted are instructions on setting up a VM and installing wireshark and ssh on it.

CIA has some useful .vimrc files too.
And a list of japanese style emojis

11:26 AM

11:55 AM
@blade19899 Yes, where in that do you see any indication that "THE US Government, can access EVERYTHING YOU HAVE. EVERYTHING"?
All I've seen so far (obviously, I've not looked very deeply) are generic howto instructions about using Linux. Where's all the dark, nefarious stuff?

@Zacharee1 this is why dogs are superior.

to be fair, I had the door closed and he was yowling at me for a while

My dog woke me up at 3 am once cause he had an upset tummy, and it is an affront to his honour to poop or pee in the house.

more like zach needs to train his cat

@edwinksl yeah, training a cat, good idea

2:13 PM
I heard cats follow what humans do.

@JourneymanGeek To be, as you said, fair, cats are far less likely to foul the floor than dogs. And I say this as someone who has always had both, and many thereof, and still prefers dogs.

@terdon my dog is wierd.
;p

Surely you meant "my human"!
Or did you finally just out yourself as not a dog?

@Zanna @muru @ElderGeek just to be clear, you guys realize that images and URLs that are already available over HTTPS will be automatically converted right? We only need to fix the things that aren't available over HTTPS.

Now this is an interesting approach askubuntu.com/a/891328/72216 (not trying to make a fool of him or her, it is no doubt meant well)

@Seth my stupidity (lack of caffeine) Those links aren't to images. The question was not well thought out. I apologize.
@JacobVlijm Your guess is as good as mine. I don't see how typing would be more effective than copying and pasting unless there was a typo in the command that the user subconsciously corrected when typing...

It does indeed. What would we do without humor? :-D

@Seth I only understood clearly this morning though
I actually think we should leave that query alone for now
way too much wasted effort

well changing the bit.ly links to hostmar is useful, but otherwise yeah
might be a bit premature.

we should wait until after they do their magic in my opinion, because it's a tiny minority of stuff that is a) not hostmar.co and b) not a link that supports https
yeah we need to fix the bit.ly stuff if I'm not wrong
but the rest is just so many wasted clicks
Yesterday I looked at about 50, and 30 were hostmar/bit.ly. Then about 10 more just needed an s

sztyrymytyryI'm having issues with Citrix HDX Media Engine. I'm able to connect to my workstation virtual machine just fine using Citrix Receiver. so I think it's < 1/5 that will actually need fixing in the end from that query, excluding the bit.ly stuff which I have a separate query for

@Zanna yeah the ones that just need an s can automatically be fixed.
Right now we're mostly worried about images that aren't https. Links are still ok.

oh yeah, I know that...

I support fixing the images while we can, but the rest can wait (well, the bit.ly stuff is mildly important)

That sounds like suicide..

supposedly.

7:05 PM
some of those batteries look like they're about to go all Note 7

@Zacharee1 they are.

"their"
oh my god

The worst one is the LG phone in the bottom left, actually.

it looks like it
although the Samsung right above is pretty bad too

the LG one is a lot worse... It was pushing the screen off of the poor device.

lol nice
G2?

N5.

The two LG-branded devices there are G3s.
The original Nexus 5 was LG.

oh

I see 2 Verizon GS4s, 2 G3s, an N4 and an N5.
Right?

7:10 PM
Not regarding the verizons.

wait no, no N4.

GS4

They're samsung.
And yes, that is a N4.

It is? Hm. Ok.
I meant GS4s, sorry.

Send me one of those G3s

7:11 PM
Yeah, two LG G3s, 1 N5, 1 N4, not sure what the vzw samsungs are.
whatever was cheap according to carrierops.

they look like S4s
Verizon had those for free for a while
2300mAh in the N5?

no, they're definitely not S4s.
and yes

cheaper knockoffs?

definitely some low-end samsung smartphone

how do you know not S4?
do they power on?

7:14 PM
no camera bump.

They look exactly like a GS4, but you're right, screen size is too small

and GS4s didn't come with verizon branding on the button.

@KazWolfe oh that's what that is

GS4 Mini perhaps?

I thought it was a scratch lol

7:15 PM
@KazWolfe aha, you're right. Just the mini. So that's what they are.

sch-i435
at least, that's what the battery says

sounds right.

I'm glad they went to a new naming scheme
because SCH-<some random stuff> was really annoying
SM-G**[0 normal|5 edge][variant] for S series and SM-N**[0 normal|5 edge][variant] for Notes makes much more sense

help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro would be better depending on what I am targeting
Would that be an acceptable question for the site? It would be nice if there was one list.
