12:52 AM
@Seth Thank you for your 45 minute video on advanced Bash concepts. I've only watched 5 minutes and have paused it three times to try out great tips the presenter made. I've bookmarked the link in a new bookmarks tab called "Bash" : youtube.com/watch?v=uqHjc7hlqd0

:D
I got to see him give that live last November. Didn't get to see the end though because the conference overlapped two sessions >:|

I wouldn't want to watch it live because I'm horrible note taker. Pausing this video and watching it over a few days (or weeks?) will be much better.

He has a place you can download the slides at.

The slides are in the video though...

also true ;p

12:56 AM
I just read one page microsoft's writeup on Bash/WSL. It's probably the best thing about Windows 10 for me.

indeed.
I wish I had Windows 10 on this computer.

It'll be on that future used laptop I spoke of buying this afternoon.
In the meantime when I go to use Windows 8.1 next, I'll setup Ubuntu on an Oracle Virtual Machine.
March 21st or so I'll start my 2 month gaming binge :D on Mass Effect IV.

Q: NFS - one file hanging ls

AMADANON Inc.I have an NFS share hosted on FreeBSD 11.0.1, and a mounted on "trusty tahr" Ubuntu 14.04. From time to time, there is a single file which is unlistable on the Ubuntu client, but looks perfectly ordinary on the NFS host. find, ls, and the like, all hang when listing this file. The easiest way I ...

2:30 AM
Early morning you all :)

2:40 AM
Good morning Eugene (it's 8pm yesterday here though)
I'm in Canada, where are you?

3:08 AM
What time zone is Edmonton on @WinEunuuchs2Unix? I'd guess you're an hour or two ahead of us Pacific coasters?

Yeah we're Mountain Standard Time +1 hour from you. But I'm working on a campaign to ditch Daylight Saving Time and it's is proving successful with current provincial (you call it state) government.

Cool!
I find DST pretty annoying too.

Yeah. My major point is that it causes confusion in the mind and leads to more accidents which is unnecessary deaths and dismemberment.
The t-shirt (once made) will read: "DST Kills!"
It would be nice to bring Washington State into the campaign.
If we convince BC to sign up then Washington and Oregon along with Montana would be easy acquisitions. I think California would be hard though because it's such a diverse culture set hard to convince.

Hello! I was wondering if anybody had used ubuntu mobile version and if they liked it? I was rooting my samsung galaxy s7 (at least trying too) and i was going to dual boot the two, (android 6.0.1 and Ubuntu Mobile)

@TylerTotally is there even a port for the S7?
I've never used it because I've never had a phone that supported it. @Mateo has used it extensively though.

3:22 AM
I might try Ubuntu on a Tablet but I think Android is best for phone.

I just got a android rca voyager
Works great for the low low 25 USD
I have had trouble rooting it, but i was planning to use kali linux on it anyway... So i suppose it not apporpite for Ubuntu forums.
Also @WinEunuuchs2Unix it would have been experimental anyway. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@TylerTotally Experimental politics I'll venture into... I've outgrown experimental technolgy a couple decades ago :p

Maybe its just me? I get some enjoyment out of it... I'll probablly brick my phone in the process

I understand I brick my hard drives from time to time :D

I blame common core. https://t.co/BsaROEo6Ye
facepalm

3:31 AM
(ill wrap this around to ubuntu here) I blew a 680 watt power supply in my rig recently and had to get a replacement. Since I had my rig open, I installed (properly) 4 hdds that I scraped from older pc's. So... I have ubuntu on one of them for recovery of windows 10 and also for when im tired of windows updates...

I'm getting into the habit of turning off Windows automatic updates... They are too annoying.

@Seth Who wouldn't be all for that?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix yea, i just did recently with a program called SpyBot
it nurfs all of windows hidden spying features

I was lead to believe Windows lets you turn off all spying features and opt out.
CIA and NSA will never do that of course :)

this is a good read wikileaks.org/ciav7p1
bud of mine sent it to me

I see Vault7 buried in your abbreviation

3:35 AM
Sorry?

Oh lol
not with it at the moment

Your link contains "ciav7p1" which to me means "CIA Vault 7 Page 1".
I'm in a happy moment and don't want to click on your link right now :)

deal
your fine

I read about wikileaks and vault 7 a couple weeks ago though.
I think Russia Today was one of the first news organizations to publish it. Most American organizations have been silent on the issue though.

3:38 AM
If i may be so bold, are you in the UK

I am half british (fourth generation) but living in Canada... it's in my profile.

neat
i am new to stack exchange, how do i leave a room?
i have other things to tend to lol

Click the big X at top of screen???

Little leave link under the userlist
Or close the tab.

Thanks
I thought it was "sticky" and just reopened next time i was on stack exchange

3:42 AM
@Seth +1 for Little leave link under the userlist I don't see it but I'll look for it some day.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix the whole vault7 thing was a huge overreaction. Spying is the CIAs job. Afaik there was no evidence they were spying on Americans.

@Seth They've broadened the mandate to spying on any American who's talked to any Canadian is OK.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix huh?

Because I'm Canadian it's ok for CIA to spy on me, and as a consequence on you since you've communicated with me.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I highly doubt the CIA is spying on you. Again, afaik, there was also no evidence that the CIA performed any mass spying.

3:44 AM
I could be wrong but it's the best of my recollection about your spy agency mandate

Honestly mass spying would make it harder for them to do their job, not easier.

GCHQ in britan does mass surveillance I'm sure CIA does it too.
Just google "cia mass surveillance" and you get tons of hits.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix GCHQ is not the equivalent of the CIA. That'd be MI5.

MI5 is internal police, MI6 are the spooks.

The NSA is the American equivalent of GCHQ, and we already know they do mass surveillance. Illegally.

3:46 AM
James Bond for example was MI6.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix ah, you're right. My point still stands though.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix doesn't mean much. Tons of news outlets used vault7 to say the CIA performed mass spying, which was wrong as far as I could find out.

From google top stories: "Could GCHQ have spied on Donald Trump?
Telegraph.co.uk-Mar 17, 2017
Britain's intelligence agency and the US Government have been the focus on an international drama following claims that GCHQ spied on ..."

Yes, GCHQ does mass surveillance.
No one is disagreeing with that

The interesting thing about CIA is we learn they don't report to the US President.
They are reporting to a deep-state and releasing secrets to the media in order to sink the Good Ship Trump.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix we.. already knew that.
They report to the director of national intelligence. Who Trump gets to appoint I might add.

3:52 AM
Yes but what you and the CIA don't know is they could be forgiven for spying on Americans but half of them will be fired for trying to stage an artificial coup d'etat by revealing secrets to the media who are trying to get rid of Trump.
Legally 50% of the CIA could be tried with Treason and executed... Which reduces tax burden.
^^ @realDonaldTrump
^^^ Peter Lavelle (@PLCROSSTALK) (Russia Today flagship program Cross Talk)
@Seth I noticed some of the old State Department faces are still there even though John Kerry is out and Rex Tillerson is in.
There is a smooth transition from Obama administration with Trump's UN ambassador Nikki hating Russia and his Sec State Rex being friendly with Russia.
Glad to see Trump back-pedaled on breaking "One China" policy and USA and China are now playing war games in South China Sea instead.
The only one I would nominate for National Intelligence Directory is Valerie Plame but that would give McCain, Chenney and Grahamn heart attacks.

4:07 AM
Hey, @Zacharee1, I have irrefutable proof that OnePlus is better than LG. (cc @NathanOsman)
The OnePlus doesn't bootloop.
kaz out.

Alright, it's ask Ask Ubuntu time. I need another monitor. Can only afford used right now. For about the same price I can... get two of these 19" 1280x1024 Dells, this 22" 1680x1050 HP
If you can't tell, ergonomics is really important to me because I have had and am having lots of issues because of it.

4:35 AM
Just get a 1920x1080 HDMI TV for 100 bucks or so.
$120: google.ca/…;*&spd=33‌10928117998617188
yawns 3:45am comes early.... bedtime.... night all :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix that's like double what any of those cost :)

1 hour later…
5:43 AM
@KazWolfe Internet high five
I just got an update and realized I hadn't rebooted since the last update over 1100 hours earlier.
Over a month without a single issue.
I sure didn't get that with my N6.

Though it was an audit at first

9:14 AM
@muru I was surprised too
what's with people asking the broadest questions possible today?

Hello :)

Hi

@Zanna Good morning to you ! :)
@Zanna horrible ... I saw some too brad one ... and voted to close :)

9:30 AM
thanks :)
good morning

@Zanna ^^^ typos everywhere .... hahaha ... I meant "too broad ones" ! :D

I know :)

10:28 AM
@TylerTotally I really like it, use it for my daily phone,not too many full ports out devices.ubports.com/# these three at the top plus the nexus 4
the best part is having the full Ubuntu commandline

@Zanna about favicos in askubuntu.com/a/57042/158442: the links are now https://cdn.sstatic.net/Sites/<site>/img/favicon.ico, so cdn.sstatic.net/Sites/stackoverflow/img/favicon.ico and cdn.sstatic.net/Sites/askubuntu/img/favicon.ico

And the desktop version of solitaire hits a sweet spot in my brain:

@muru oh thanks! I should fix the ones I did properly, because I took a screenshot of the wayback page, cropped it, and uploaded myself, resulting in degraded images
oh you did already
fixed the other two

11:22 AM
root@kali:~# sudo fdisk -l all sudo to the roots

I think that's the first time I've seen humor in error pages as JSON, looks kind of cool

@Dan What's that circle floating behind it supposed to be?
@Seth Huh? I got mine in about a half hour from the embassy. Renewed, anyway, I guess you might be talking about the first one issued.

12:14 PM
Do we need when we have ?

Dan
@terdon it's a speech bubble with a question mark in it

12:31 PM
If you say so. Wow.

@muru synonymise?

@Zanna posted on meta. Lets see.

nice

Q: Do we need [safety] when we have [security]?

muruJust saw that there's tag for safety, with no usage guidance, and questions mostly about how "safe" something is. Seems like it should be a synonym of security. Or nuked altogether.

1:05 PM
@KazWolfe my phone hasn't bootlooped

1 hour later…
2:26 PM
er... should this be open? askubuntu.com/questions/65083/…

what do you mean?

too broad!!

read the quote at the top of the question

I did...
shrug ok whatever

we're keeping that one open because it's useful

2:29 PM
@Zanna why too broad ? it's useful information about DEs - isn't it ? Or did I misunderstand it ?

@Zacharee1 I see that.
@cl-netbox no denying that is is useful, it's just asking for a big list == too broad
but, a) new DEs could come along and b) the list will remain finite even so, because it's quite a big deal to develop a DE
so I agree with @Zacharee1, it does make sense for the post to be open for new submissions

@Zanna hysterical raisins.

indeed
haha I just ate some raisins

rip

@Zanna yes, that's my opinion as well - let's leave it open ! :)

3:30 PM
@terdon Renewals are easier.

Hi @Seth How are things going ? :)

Going ok

@Seth good to hear :)

hmm. If multiple monitors use the VESA100 standard, does that mean I could swap their bases?

3:56 PM
AFAIK, VESA is about cable signals / refresh rates / resolutions/... , not about the plastic around it. @Seth

@Fabby VESA has a lot of standards, including the mounts :)

I should read up on the standard then!
(Last time was 20 years ago)

also hi fabby :)
been a bit.

Been a bit when you were around... :D
Last week Mon-Tue worked 40h straight.
and then 12h per day rest of week except Friday.
I've been a bit busy. :)

Wow. That doesn't sound healthy.

4:00 PM
I've taken 2.5 days of sick leave in 25 years of career.
Which reminds me: I've got 0.5 sick day coming up in the next year! :D

I didn't just mean bodily ;)

Ah! Well, a project miss: I misunderstood an external PM, had resources scheduled for this week, but they should have done the work last week.
So I stepped in and did it myself...

@Fabby I can top this my friend : 0 days of "sick leave" ! :D How are you doing Fabby ? :)

:O
0??? how long of a career so far?
You get ill during your holidays as well?
(that's what used to happen to me: 1 week off: flu!)

@Fabby that was in more than 20 years ... :)

4:06 PM
wow...

@Fabby yes ... and also while on work - but as you know I'm a German ... self-discipline is everything ! :) hahaha :D

> tfw unlimited sick days

Yeah, but still: 0 days is very little sick leave...

@Fabby yes and sometimes it was very hard ... :)

@KazWolfe I did have unlimited sick days back then...
It's just that after the month has ended you fall down to disability benefits.
(which was about half of what I earned)

4:17 PM
i.stack.imgur.com/JxQfg.png friend asked me to test some software he wrote for using multiple wifi connections

So someone *insisted* to have this conversation with me, about a possible job as python programmer. After I said "no" three times in a row, they still wanted my resume. I send it, after which they invited me for an interview.

"*So, yeah, yeah, nice, nice. I see you are active in community stuff, open source and all, but.... did you ever program for real?*"

Me: Well, please define real, did you look into the Launchpad stuff I send you, or any of the other links?

"*Uhm........ no. But I mean commercial stuff, did you ever program commercially?*"

@Fabby I have to correct myself : it was the same amount as in your case - 25 years, though being a typical German was a joke ... Germans are known for behaving quite the opposite way, whenever they read about a flu is coming near to them, they visit the next available doctor ! :D :D :D

@JacobVlijm Starred! We've all been there...
@cl-netbox Aah... I didn't know that!

@Fabby so good to be able to decompress here :)

I once had an entire interview in English and then the question: "Yeah, but this is in Amsterdam. Do you speak any Dutch?"

4:21 PM
@JacobVlijm @Thijser Hi Jacob ! Hi Thijs ! Good afternoon to you ! :)

I replied in Dutch and the other side went "Does that mean 'Yes'?"
:D :D :D

^ hilareous haha.

@cl-netbox hello there

Hey @cl-netbox

@Thijser subwoofer bug still "undecided" ... seems that not a lot users have a subwoofer ... hmmm :(

4:24 PM
@cl-netbox yhea had some trouble convincing someone to also report this bug as he decided it was a problem with intel and that they should just release their drivers

@Thijser that is definitly not an issue with intel drivers ... OMG ! :( subwoofer is a sound problem - not a CPU or graphics problem ! :D

@Thijser beststevie is a "genius" ... in cooking or baking pizzas maybe ? hahaha :D

You can voice your opinion on that topic, maybe that will convince him.

@Thijser The thing is (you might remember) that I'm not having a subwoofer and so, no valuable experience with it ... I just provided you with some general ideas to help you getting the problem solved. Also I think you explained everything perfectly fine ! :)

4:32 PM
(what I mean is explaining why he has no idea what he is talking about)

he doesn't.
intel GC drivers don't even touch audio in any way.

@Thijser "Intel is known not to present any Drivers for the Graphics to the Linux Community" WTF is this bullshit ??? As I said : better he gets back to baking pizzas ! :D Unbelievable ... !!!

@JacobVlijm Ugh. I would have gotten so mad.

@Seth Seth? Mad? Never.

Iguanas are humans t... no that doesn't work.

4:36 PM
@Seth Yeah, I actually was. Such silly questions, such arrogance to the open source community. And after they really insisted on having this conversation.

@JacobVlijm It's like they haven't even heard of our Lord and Savior RMS, who rode down from Proprietary Mountain on a GNU to deliver unto us our salvation, the GPL.

@JacobVlijm So are you actively looking for programming work then? I don't remember what you said you do currently.. Teacher, I think?
@KazWolfe Having seen RMS speak.. He actually believes something along those lines.
Or at least pretends he does well enough to make me sick

@Seth yeah... i do not like the guy or his absolute hate towards proprietary software.

@Seth yeah, I am a musician, but would love to switch (partially) to programming.

@JacobVlijm why do all those stupid kids "with the short trousers" (mit de kutten Hosen) get these jobs where they decide who gets a job and who not ? OMG :D

4:39 PM
@cl-netbox because managers.

@cl-netbox when you can't do anything useful.. go into management!
Those who can, do. Those who can't, lead.
3

@cl-netbox He obviously got nervous on any of my questions to clarify what he meant. I am pretty sure he didn't know peanuts on programming.

@Seth Hrmpf... I'm a Project Manager but because I made a mistake, I drove 500Km to the Data Centre, opened a change, ran about 1Km of Fibre cables myself, upped the ports and tested.

case in point:

@Seth Sadly this became true as it seems ... when I was in such positions (and I was for a very long time) , I would never ever acted like this ... that's all I can say ... very, very sad. :(

4:41 PM
@Seth (Oh, Drove back too and did it in a 4h stretch because the extrernal upplier was showing up next day)

@Fabby yes but you used to be the little guy at one point, didn't you?

@here: A good manager is a manager who can replace any of his people when they get sick, have a personal emergency, ...

exactly.

@JacobVlijm yes - I think he was two things : 1) jealous and 2) afraid of you being better than himself !

Unfortunately, there's just a ton of bad managers out there who've never written a single line of code or made a cable themselves...

4:44 PM
@Fabby yeah Fabby ... we old farts, we thought and think and act this way ... :)

^ this! (and above that ^^)

well then just about anyone can be a good manager to me. They just need to sit at my desk, drink coffee, and post in AUGR char or read reddit.

I used to be able to say "I know everything there is to know about MS-DOS ! :D :D :D
We old farts had it easier... Nowadays the learning curve is very steep!

@Fabby You do?

@KazWolfe Meh... still 80%.
Why? You're going to test me?
Smoke! BRB!

4:46 PM
i might have

@Fabby No, I don't thinks so ... we have and had enough self-confidence to stand to the fact that everyone has strengths on other fields and so we always hired the best available people ! :)

@Fabby Microsoft denial of service?
4

@terdon yes ! that ! hahaha ... Hi terdon :)

Q: WiFi not working on 16.10

Adem AssamI have Ubuntu 16.10 on my laptop. I also have a Broadcom 802.11n wireless chip which is refusing to activate. What can I do to fix this?

@mods, can i request a nuke?

4:52 PM
@terdon Starred!
@KazWolfe You've got my vote... Let the guy edit his answer first.

@KazWolfe On what grounds? I mean, yes of course it's unclear, but it was asked 16 minutes ago. I'd VTC, but I don't want to hammer it closed just yet.

@terdon VTC as unclear, OP doesn't seem to know what they're doing, it can always be re-opened.
Plus, it won't generate potentially useless answers like the one it already got. Isn't acer_wmi by default blacklisted?

No idea. I'm all for closing it, I just don't want to do it as a mod. That's all.

@Fabby I added mine (VTC) @KazWolfe ... he has to provide way more information :)

ah yes, the hammer... SE should add a feature for non-binding action.

4:55 PM
Oh, by the way, lspci | grep Network usually doesn't always the wireless card I think.

Works on my system (tm)

@terdon starred! :)

┌─[1]─[9:49:56]─[kazwolfe@firewolf]
└──> ~ % lspci | grep Network
02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43602 802.11ac Wireless LAN SoC (rev 01)

@KazWolfe Mine too. I think it wouldn't on my laptop. Not sure though. The "classic" is lspci -nn | grep 0280

oh, TIL.

4:56 PM
cl@cl-uw-1:~$ lspci | grep Network
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev bb)

Yeah, I learned that one here too.
@terdon Um. That was supposed to read: "doesn't always show the wireless card, I think."

@terdon when you use LAN and disable WiFi it shows the wired connection I think. :)

I'll have to check on my laptop but the one you're currently using is irrelevant.
The problem I am thinking of is that some wireless cards don't have the word "Network" in the output lspci shows for them.

user136984
@terdon: Thanks for the Jazz recommendations by the way! I only got the chance to properly look at them all yesterday, but they were good! :)

you are right :
cl@cl-uw-1:~$ lspci | grep Ethernet
04:00.1 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 12)

5:05 PM
Ah so it's the other way around. grep Network won't get all ethernet cards.

Good afternoon @ParanoidPanda ! Nice to see you ! :)
@terdon exactly ... it's the "word" which matters :)

hmmm. i wonder if i can link google voice to ubuntu's SMS/phone calls menu options.
and sync notifications.

You were kindly pinged such that we could retrieve your opinion on whether being serious or non-serious with absolutely no indication is a good thing or not.

well, you certainly got a reply.

Lol.

thomas being thomas
speaking of, KEYS @ThomasWard

@KazWolfe I was talking to a colleague at an airport about a Bill Of Materials, but was using the abbreviation.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@KazWolfe It's a good thing: you can say things seriously and still claim them to be jokes if you say them in a funny way.
(and they've been said and stay said)

@Fabby rip
so are you on a no-fly list?

@KazWolfe once Magisk 11.5 gets released again, you might want to give it another try. It's supposed to fix a lot of SUHide issues.

@Zacharee1 like i said, i really don't want to have to reimage my phone :/
I'll wait for my OnePlus to arrive before I do any more creative hacking.

Alrighty
Are you getting the 3T or waiting on the 4?

Any rumors on it?
