12:00 AM
typing...
beep
bop
ping
pong
Just be aware that this can become strongly annoying when the room is heated up.

is the tablet market really dying?

I don't get a sound unless I'm mentioned. I have cycled through the settings. Are you able to active something that will give you a sound every time there is an update to the chat room?
@by
@ByteCommander

should have worked...
idk then

I'll cycle through them again... which of the options in the image works for you?

@NathanOsman In the US (and probably Canada) kitchen and bathroom outlets have to have independent circuit breakers in the outlet itself, but I don't think they deliver less current.

12:09 AM
One sec while I get the image.

Hmm, the lower two should both work
Say something please?

It appears to be working. I have all rooms set at this time. Thanks! Now I can walk away from the console while I wait for a response my other support screen.
I was sure SE has just about any key feature a person could want.

I've pushed nearly 30 GB of data through the network today.
It's times like these that I appreciate gigabit.

I don't hear anything on my side from those settings...
/shrug
Anyway, late enough to find some rest. Good night.

I like tacos

12:14 AM
Who doesn't?

I don't know but they must be maimed...

Now, now...

@NathanOsman no juan..

sad_trombone.mp3

OMG!
I ran another speed test and it peaked at 276Mbps...
I pay for 60...
I hope my ISP never realizes it...

12:21 AM
Woohoo! New keyboard arrived :D
Cherry mx brown, so all the fun

Nice, my keyboard came Monday...

Time to boot up Xen.
(No not the Xen that @ThomasWard was talking about earlier :P)
Argh.
How are you supposed to press the "option" key to choose Startup Manager on a Mac when all I have is a PC keyboard?

Your hypervisor hates you, like it hates everyone.
Alt.
Alt ==> Option

Didn't work.
That's what I thought too.
But no. That would be too easy.

Then try the meta key.

12:35 AM
why are you using a mac?

If that also doesn't work, try the ctrl key.

Even holding Alt before pressing the power button doesn't do anything.

@TheXed Mac Pros are chill hypervisors.

Yeah, I'll try Ctrl this time 'round.

@TheXed Because Macs are versatile

12:35 AM
Is it the Windows key?

hue

@NathanOsman Is the keyboard even in BIOS mode?

@Daniel uhhhhhhhh

@Daniel and way overpriced...

@KazWolfe It's a USB keyboard / mouse combo.

12:36 AM
@Daniel Dangerous thing to say in this chat room.

> ability to adapt or be adapted to many different functions or activities.
Macs are like purposely the opposite of that

*click click click click click*

click?

@TheXed Lemme guess you hate Lamborghini because they're expensive?

clicky keyboards are fun.

12:37 AM
@Daniel that's not the only reason...

I'm thinking I need to press the key after power.

Macs are expensive and not worth that premium

@TheXed list the others

BTW, I bought the Mac 'cuz that's literally the only legal way to use OS X.

@NathanOsman who cares about legal? pshhh

12:38 AM
I do if I'm running a business.

People writing software that's widely used.

f da police

Like NitroShare.

hue

I've used every version of Mac OS X, every version of Windows, and every version of Ubuntu since 12.04 - Mac does everything I've ever tried to do

12:38 AM
@Daniel you must not do very much o_O

Oh on the contrary I do a lot

@Daniel This is mostly true - but neither OS X nor Windows can do multiseat.
Linux takes the cake on that one.

Not true
My Mac does

Wat.

@Daniel Counter to that: Attaching to system processes.

12:39 AM
@Daniel Do explain.
I'd love to see how this is possible.

I'm guessing by running X, @NathanOsman

I can run the ubuntu kernel alongside OS X

@Daniel Oh that doesn't count! :D
Virtualization isn't the same thing at all.

Multiseat is a single kernel running desktops for multiple logged-in users.
OS X doesn't have anything like that.

12:41 AM
Another counter: Editing things in /usr

ugh Multiseat is hard to do

Windows sort-of does with RDP.

It can if I use a thin client to log in

@Zacharee1 Not with two video cards.

@Daniel Multiseat means "multiple user sessions off of one physical device, where each session can act concurrently alongside other sessions. This is usually facilitated with multiple keyboards/'mice"

12:41 AM
@Daniel Yes, but that's still not the same thing.
You need two computers / devices to make that work.

I know, it's not true multiseat but it accomplishes the same

wait, Windows can do a sort of multiseat with Pluralinput: each mouse and keyboard can be its own control

So long OS X.
Hello, XenServer.

wut

I'm installing XenServer on my Mac Mini.
Yes, this is going to be awesome.

12:43 AM
So, yes, there are a lot of things OSX can't do that *nix can.

Besides, why would I need multiseat, and who uses it anymore?

@Daniel they are mechanically deficient, bad for the environment, and poor fuel economy...and crazy expensive to get the oil changed or do minor repairs on...

lol

@Daniel Anyone who wants to cut costs.

not Macs, btw

12:43 AM
@Daniel Libraries, laboratories, a decent amount of offices

probably some schools

OK so far you've listed one thing Mac can't do

@Daniel themes

@Daniel Edit /usr

edit / on Sierra

12:44 AM
@Daniel Attach debuggers to system processes.

You can edit everything
I can dump logs from system processes

@Daniel but hey if you are into throwing money away and getting little return then that is on you.

@Daniel That's not equivalent to running gdb on them while they're running.

Well I paid less for my MacBook Pro than any other computer I've ever bought

12:45 AM
or, better:
187
Q: What is the "rootless" feature in El Capitan, really?

JoshI have just learned about the "Rootless" feature in El Capitan, and I am hearing things like "There is no root user", "Nothing can modify /System" and "The world will end because we can't get root". What is the "Rootless" feature of El Capitan at a technical level? What does it actually mean for...

@Daniel Like I said, I mostly agree with you. There are only a handful of things it can't do.
And they tend to be obscure.

@Daniel either you got a really good deal on the MacBook pro, or you could have bought a similar laptop with Windows for half the price...

There's no customization

@NathanOsman THANK YOU for not being a pig-headed fanatic who insists that Mac is horrible

but my problem is more with the hardware than the OS
@Daniel good job demonizing us

12:46 AM
Hey, I run Mac pretty damn often.

@Daniel they aren't, just me.

now we'll definitely agree with you

@TheXed I got it for free but it needed a new logic board. Apple had a recall on the GPU so they fixed it free of charge

@Daniel so you did get a hell of a deal then.

I did

12:47 AM
Btw hard drives are really hard to put into those things...

And it gets a better cinebench score than any of my PCs (except my i7-4790K build)

Oh god @TheXed

@Daniel They do some things well. I love iMovie, for example. Best free video editor. Period.

and this one uses a standard laptop HDD

the 2010 iMac needs special drives

12:48 AM
I udgraded it to an SSD
iMovie isn't quite free

the 2013 one slowed down to a crawl after a year of use

@Daniel yeah but you have to take out a million tiny little screws and keep track of them all...

This one is from 2011 and is still fast as hell

@Daniel Well, apart from the cost of the Mac.
:P

@Daniel what do you do on it? My mom uses the 2013 one to run Chrome and Pages, and it's slow as hell

12:48 AM
and then you finally get to remove the RAM...then take out a million more screws and finally get to the HDD

I'm thinking of throwing an SSD in my mini but it does look like a rather complex operation.

@NathanOsman it's not rocket science--wait...

My laptop still has scars from the time me and some coworkers added an SSD.
We had to disassemble the thing down to the chassis.

@NathanOsman I put RAM in my neighbors mac mini...wasn't really that hard...

@TheXed Not the 2014 Mac Mini. It's soldered onto the mainboard.

12:50 AM
@TheXed the last time I took apart an iPhopne (4), I lost a screw for the volume rocker. Had a piece of paper with sections and labels with the screws taped down, still lost it

but I had to buy some specialized tools from Menards......

@NathanOsman RIP
2016 MBP lol

@Zacharee1 I run Logic Pro X, Parallels for Win10 and Ubuntu (which run perfectly well), Cisco Packet Tracer, as well as Team Fortress 2, War Thunder, Garry's Mod, Jedi Academy (modded), minecraft, everything
In other news my Boss MD-2 pedal came

that makes no sense

I had to buy a putty knife...to take that mac mini apart...

12:51 AM
@TheXed I used a pocket knife

@Daniel Garry's Mod... I take it you've played Portal then?

I probably could have, but it seemed a bit to big...

jesus, you need a knife to take apart your Mac?

@NathanOsman Nope

I just use a phillips screwdriver for my laptop

12:51 AM
@Zacharee1 just to pry the cover off

@Daniel worth playing, for sure

@NathanOsman price?

@Zacharee1 it's a mini.

Hey, @Daniel, what framerate do you get in MC for general activity?

@KazWolfe easy 60

12:52 AM
It's not designed to take up a lot of space, so naturally it takes work to disassemble.

@NathanOsman How many times do I have to say this, that Xen was destroyed by evil powers of darkness which shattered the multidimensional planes.

On what render distance and graphics mode?

@Daniel I got it during a Christmas sale for $2-3 IIRC.

@KazWolfe idk what exactly but I'm pretty sure it's higher than default, and the settings are on Max

@ThomasWard how many times? Oh, I imagine a few more :P

12:52 AM
I should install Minecraft...but that would mean I would have to install java...

@NathanOsman I'll look into it.

@TheXed it's packaged in the game now

@TheXed There's nothing wrong with Java if you use it wisely

@TheXed /me is java dev

1 min ago, by Thomas Ward
@NathanOsman How many times do I have to say this, that Xen was destroyed by evil powers of darkness which shattered the multidimensional planes.
there
now shush :P

12:53 AM
Now do it once every five minutes.

I get 300+ on a good day with 16Render, 90FOV, Fast Graphics, Optifine, Dynamic Lighting, everything else Fancy

@Daniel ...and keep it updated :D

@Zacharee1 Well guess what that doesn't help you much if you've only got a 60Hz display

^--- this

@Daniel no, but I have a ton of leeway

12:54 AM
pls. 144 is op af.

which means that if I have a 130-mod modpack, I still get like 70

I miss plasma TVs :(

@KazWolfe I'm debating on whether to spend the money on a 4K60 or a 1080P144

@NathanOsman mmm, screenburn

600 Hz was something to behold.
@Zacharee1 Nothing is perfect.

12:55 AM
hue

I'd go 1080@144

yeah

(chanting) 4K... 4K...

4k is overrated

Okay I will do it just so I can see the FPS...

12:55 AM
higher framerate > higher res

@Zacharee1 I know but 4K is pretty

Lemme show you what is the most awesome monitor ever...
One sec...

Or how about 4K144
Or 8K144

@Daniel yeah but your computer probably can't handle it

12:56 AM
You're on a mac, m8. You won't be able to clear 4k@144

^--- drools

@Zacharee1 I'll be using a GTX 1070, and maybe SLI 1070 later

MC doesn't do SLI

It's either a large 4K display or four separate 1080p displays.

@NathanOsman wait, is it UHD or 4k?

12:57 AM
also, SLI is a bad idea for so many reasons.

you need at least a 1080 for 4k

@Zacharee1 The "marketing 4K".

@Zacharee1 UHD == 4K

@KazWolfe nope.

(more or less)

12:57 AM
Common misconception though.

@KazWolfe UHD != 4k

UHD is slightly smaller than "true" cinematic 4K.

UHD =prettydamnclose= 4K

@NathanOsman oh yeah, that's right.
Ignore Kaz. He's a moron.

Yes, for most practical purposes, they are similar enough.
But they are not perfectly identical.

12:59 AM
UHD == 3840x2160; 4k == 4096x2160

Does anything do SLI?

not MC

TBH I'll probably end up going with a 1080P60 because $80
and I make like $180 a week on average
