@Serg I took a course on affective computing this semester and we're working on that.

@DavidFoerster O_O oh, hell naw !!!

Hi everyone. Did you get your nVidia 4k fixed @KazWolfe

nope.

sorry to hear that.... can you report the bug to nvidia folks or xorg folks?
i mean there is an explicit error message there they can source code trace to exact situation / variable.

1:29 AM
time to go sleep, check you all later! Have a good night :)

1:52 AM
it seems i can't communicate with anyone today.

So TIL about: HTTPS://isitdns.com xD

@Seth checks dns spooping ?
by the way, how are you feeling ?

@Serg lousy, but I found a way to keep it under enough control I don't feel continually dreadful.

Hey, it's @Seth. I was starting to get worried...
Anyway, welcome.

2:12 AM
Yeah, im also stabilizing. Had to be on antibiotics for a week but now that I'm more or less OK, I'm stopping taking those. They make my stomach upset all the time

Be careful discontinuing antibiotics early - if any remnants of the bacteria linger, they will be the hardiest and most resistant strains.

erm no
bloody well finish the course ._.
else you'd simply kill off the weakest ones, and the survivors will be stronger

@JourneymanGeek Who is the "no" for?

But severe tummy problems (not just bothersome) mean you need to stop because you're having a reaction

Well, a day won't make a difference will it ? plus I'm not sure whether or not frequent diarrhea is enough severity, but it is annoying

Oh, believe me, I can sympathize with that.

It's always best to ask the dr.

I got hit hard back in November with something like that.

Well, I've no money for a doctor . . .

Vomiting, the-thing-you-just-said, and worst of all, I couldn't eat a cheeseburger for two days.

2:19 AM
@NathanOsman stopping antibiotics early

@Serg Do they have walk-in medical clinics down there like they do up here?
@JourneymanGeek Ah, okay. So we were agreeing then.

@NathanOsman i don't know, but my mom had to pay pretty big sum for simple checkup when she got sick.

Yikes.
I had to pay a pretty big bill when I had the ambulance come.
So I can sympathize with that one as well. Except I didn't know about the bill until it came. ಠ_ಠ

Maybe I'm wrong, but i think in the US medical system is either you have money or you have debt . . . or just hope those corner store meds work

2:34 AM
FACK
i missed my station

2:50 AM
@Serg You should look into natural antibiotics. Most bacterial infections can be killed by them fairly easily. I haven't had an antibiotic in years.

3:27 AM
A couple years back when I was really sick, it was suggested by one of the doctors that I eat lots of yogurt.
I don't know if you like yogurt or not, but it might be worth a shot.
Actually, no. It wasn't the doctor. It was the pharmacist.

but a lot of yogurts don't really have the live cultures even if they say they do. stick with greek or icelandic skyr

Not a big fan of yogurts, but can have them time to time

hi

I just ate yogurt.
@NathanOsman Gitlab appears to have recovered, but 4k projects are gone.

4:03 AM
@chaskes Latest yogurt commercial says they have 50 billion cultures. Who can count that high and how could you ever prove it's false advertising? And does anyone really believe their 50 billion cultures is that much better than next guy with 49,999,999,999 cultures in his yogurt?

50 billion identical or different cultures?

Since you know it's all math-y exponential growth projection, I'll give you a half LOL for that one: L(
Some one help me out and spread L( across the net as = mildly amusing.

Also, is that even possible? A quick search suggests the average bacteria size is 2μmx0.2μm.
How large would 50 billion of those be?

@MarkYisri source? They said projects were not effected. Only things like webhooks and account data was affected.

https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=2%CE%BCm*0.2%CE%BCm*0.2%CE%BCm+*+5e10+in+m%5E3
^--- anyway, here's the math
@WinEunuuchs2Unix so 50 billion individual bacterium would occupy roughly 0.004 cubic cm.

4:10 AM
±6 hours of data loss
4613 regular projects, 74 forks, and 350 imports are lost (roughly); 5037 projects in total. Since Git repositories are NOT lost, we can recreate all of the projects whose user/group existed before the data loss, but we cannot restore any of these projects’ issues, etc.
±4979 (so ±5000) comments lost
707 users lost potentially, hard to tell for certain from the Kibana logs
Webhooks created before Jan 31st 17:20 were restored, those created after this time are lost

@chaskes so the repos weren't lost just all the metadata.

I just cut/pasted from their page
oh, I misread your comment. Apparently it's bad but not quite as bad as they feared. but the damage to a start up..?
plus, googling the principals and some previous reactions some people have had to some of their blog posts (like mongobd vs postgresql) makes me wonder if things are not helped by a lot of very young people without a lot of experience making a company that has grown quickly

@NathanOsman Oh 50 billion of the same thing... I thought they meant 50 billion different unique things... I'm sure you can have trillions upon trillions of atoms in a teaspoon. Or at least I guess you could.

that said they've been very, very open about the situation, causes, and response. The spark may have been a typo in a command, but it exposed several problems in their ops and readiness

@Seth that's what I meant

4:22 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Yes, but bacteria are considerably larger than an atom.

@NathanOsman Although I've never seen either one (and hope I never do) I believe bacteria is comprised of atoms and atoms are not comprised of bacteria. So I'd have to say you are right again!
The gist of my point is the commercial hinted it had 50 billion different cultures in the yogurt. To have 50 billion units of the same bacteria in a jar of yogurt doesn't seem like a huge accomplishment given the number of atoms you can fit in a teaspoon.

Well, I agree it's a rather useless way to market the product.

In fact, their terrorism is likely increasing support for Republicans.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I'm not even sure they comprehend. Like, at all.

Is fascism the marriage of government, media and corporations?

I'm starting to wonder if the mafia is less corrupt than what's going on down there right now.

I don't know much about the mafia, just what I read in the Executioner book series when I was 13.
Doesn't seem like something worth studying.... Ubuntu is more interesting.

I think it feels super realistic

My gf showed me photo of her cousin a few days ago. Supper athletic,handsome. I kinda thing I might be compared to him sometimes ^_^''

OK, can somebody explain to me how in the heck does nslookup resolve google.com. and google.co. ?

@Serg DNS queries.

@NathanOsman OK, but that's . . .not exactly right domain , is it ?

It is.
In fact, if you don't use a trailing period, one is added for you.
Domains in DNS queries always end in a trailing period.

O_o wait what ? why ?

5:19 AM
That explains it better than I can.
It's basically like an absolute path.
mydir/myfile.txt could mean different things depending on the current directory.
But /mydir/myfile.txt is always the same file.
Likewise, an "absolute" (fully qualified) domain name ends in a dot.
myhost can mean different things depending on where you are in the network.

I need a mod :)

But google.com. always means the same thing.
@Zanna chat or site?

So . . . Can I ask for a review of my answer I'm about to post ? (related to this dns stuff)

I'm not an expert, but I'm willing to take a peek.

So, question is this: askubuntu.com/q/878653/295286
My solution is the following:

5:24 AM
I'm having a bit of difficulty figuring out what the OP wants...
He has a list of URLs and he wants only valid domain names output?

OP has list of domains, and wants to correct the incorrect ones

@NathanOsman site, never mind, I flagged :)

At least that's what i understand

How does he want them "corrected"?

From his example output, they just want the main domain, so no trailing path's
and no leading http:// or https://

5:26 AM
@Serg the trailing part could be just comm instead of com

But then:
> "No it didn't worked. I gave the command like this for example checking: echo 'google.comm' | sed -r 's#(.*//)?([^/]+)/.*#\2#' and output was google.comm but this is not what I want. I am looking for google.com"
It seems like he wants more than just text substitution.

Yeah, and that too

So how would the script know to correct "comm" to "com"?

He edited the input while I was wasting my time on it btw XD

So I came up with solution to remove characters from the end until nslookup tells me "yup,that's correct domain"

5:28 AM
Ah, okay.

Awesome

In that case, your answer should do the trick.

So . . . about that trailing dot . . . what should i do with it ?

I hoped someone would know the right tool

@Serg In this case, I don't think it matters.

5:29 AM
should I remove it ?

The results aren't likely to be terribly different with or without it.
At least not in OP's case.

OK, well, I shall post it, then

Great

@Serg Hi, I was thinking whether you can help me in my problem of finding the http status code of the domains I have?

@JafferWilson Weren't you doing that already with wget or curl ?

@Serg I am looking for the fastest yet perfect way to get the HTTP status code of the URL or domains I have. I have used Python and PHP.. no use. They take a lot of time. Can you tell me is there any fastest way to detect HTTP status. I have millions of them in a text file
@Serg Yes I tried. But the process went extremely slow and I got very fw result. So i thought it is not a proven method

Hmm, yeah, I don't think I could suggest anything better. I'm not very proficient in web programming. Text processing - yeah, but not web stuff

@Serg I am feeling stuck up with this question. It is the slowest way to find the HTTP status. I want to have the fastest.
@serg is there anyone who can help me with it? You know anyone?

No, I don't. Most folks I know write same type of scripts as I do - so desktop , simple GUI apps, command-line scripts, text-processing,etc.

7:10 AM
@Serg thank you....:)

@Zanna the time-command tag probably deserves to live. It's one of those commands named with generic words, like at, that are very difficult to search.

@Zanna agreed with muru ^ /usr/bin/time and time shell built-in are tools that are frequently used and "time" is pretty generic word, so a tag is pretty useful in this case

7:25 AM
\o
08am and I am on 85 rep :X hmmm

@muru thanks - I have put the tag back on the only question that had it!

@Zanna it probably should be on others, but searching out the ones that need it... meh.

ugh yeah I don't really wanna >> TODO that task

@JafferWilson Well... how fast is your connection? :P
This would be fairly trivial to do in Go.
You could spawn separate goroutines for each connection.
Then many could run in parallel.

7:42 AM
@Zanna you don't really wanna append to TODO file ? ;)
lame bash jokes FTW

There's a systemd joke in there somewhere.

@Serg yeah you got it
but my syntax is bad unless you can allow hybrid bash + English

I can tell today is the day I shall become officially legendary :=D

@NathanOsman Well, my network is pretty fast. I will run the code on some dedicated server. I have no knowledge of Go. Can you help and give me solution if it works then I will learn Go for sure. Can you let me know how to write it?

loved the new video @NathanOsman :D

8:00 AM
@Rinzwind thanks :)
@JafferWilson Give me a few minutes.

@Rinzwind 150 up :D

8:12 AM
Save that as domains.go and assuming you have Go installed, you can run it with:
go run domains.go < domainlist.txt
(Assuming each domain / URL is on a separate line.)

The lack of "Save" button in google doc is bothering me so much

If you don't have Go installed, you can do so with:
sudo apt-get install golang
I can't wait to see how well my script runs - initial testing seems to be quite positive.

Hello everyone -- now online on my PC for about 4 hours.

Hmm...
It doesn't play nice with a really large number of domains.
There isn't really anything rate-limiting the requests...

so, I'm tired of asking for class notes, so now i made slack channel and made google doc where class notes will go. That way it's gonna be easy to share
Assuming of course my classmates will comit to editing that file
sadly there's no service for class notes similar to git, hence using google doca
sadly there's no service for class notes similar to git, hence using google docs

8:28 AM
Chat is acting up.

@chat be nice !

@JafferWilson I fixed the script - change the NUM_GOROUTINES constant to the number of simultaneous requests you want to have running.
Don't set it too high - 16 seems to work well, I'd especially avoid setting it above 100, for sure.

8:45 AM
@NathanOsman Thank you .. let me check it if it works well fo me.

@Hizqeel 160 even

@NathanOsman will this program store in text format the out of anyother format? I have seen this website: httpstatus.io I want to have something like this checking.. It is pretty fast and gives proper out to what I am looking for.

@Rinzwind 10 rep per 15-20 min.. this means You will be Officially Legend in about 1 h and 10 min :p :) Probably

@JafferWilson It just writes something like this to STDOUT:

@Rinzwind I think I could have earned that badge just this morning with all the tag-burning I did
209 edits done this week hahaha

@Zanna nice nice :D I am on 42/100 for arch :X

@Rinzwind it's definitely a "meh" badge, but these days I am such a janitor (with OCD tendencies) that I've probably necrobumped a thousand old posts
Legendary is a lot shinier hahaha

lol
my precious
(I really want the legendary badge, but sadly, I think I'll hit 100K on SU way before I get that)

@Rinzwind Late to the Party But Congratulations Legend :)

it will be an all-day party: you are not late

9:36 AM
@Zanna I mean to say Late to: the badge Giving Ceremony :p

Thanks :-)

Nice one @Rinzwind!

Congratulations @Rinzwind -> askubuntu.com/help/badges/43/legendary?userid=15811 ! :) Well done Rinzy ! :)

@Rinzwind Congratulations for having achieved this too ! :) Very good job Rinzy ! :)

@Rinzwind When I was saying 150 up earlier chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/35165714#35165714 I was talking about that 150K :)

sigh
the easiest gold badges next that I do not have would be me becomming a mod >:-D I don't see myself asking 100 questions :P
oh Hizqeel :D but that was also when I reached 150 rep that day :D funny

@Rinzwind Yes that was me +1 for 150k + 150 rep :D

@Rinzwind Great news!!! Congratulations & all from me too. So long you worked for that.

9:55 AM
@Rinzwind Time to move to U&L ;)

@terdon I'd rather quit AU >:-D
what you want me to install arch next?
and thanks :D

@Rinzwind About time you joined the big league! :P

@terdon hi! how's everything?

Distros are like food. First you start with preprocessed, cream-like baby food that's easy to eat, like Ubuntu, then you move to simple but tasty food like Debian and then you start cooking for yourself and install Arch :P
Hi @MarkYisri

"1,337 posts edited" :=D
how odd for that to also happen today

10:02 AM
Yeah, you're leet!

10:45 AM
@terdon I prefer easy Ubuntu fast-food for everyday stuff, but also know how to cook Arch myself...

Well, I guess we all crave fast food every now and then ;)

Oli
@terdon Bloody Arch hipsters thinking they invented the moustache. SlackBuilds and Gentoo users would like a word with you.

lol, "thinking they invented the moustache": brilliant :)
But hey, I just said I like to cook for myself, not that I want to grow/breed my own food from scratch!

I like my sushi made by a sushichef :=D

Although, if any distro can be accused of being hipster, that would be (in order of hipsterness) ElementaryOS, Mint and Ubuntu.
@Rinzwind Boring! You need the frisson of cutting your own poisonous fish, man!

10:57 AM
A remake of Dune? Please don't :P

Dune? Why Dune?

Do I need to know more than the first book of Dune to understand that comment?

oh wait
Denis Villeneuve wants to re-do the movie AND then do the other 19 books Herbert wrote
that I'd love to see

Heh, yeah, that seems about right :)
So, that's beard length as a proxy for masochism levels, right?

11:01 AM
Oli should be on the right of that >:)

The beard length is probably proportional to the lines of terminal commands and code that must be written per day to keep the system running...
@Zacharee1 Newest misspelling: "Unbunt" askubuntu.com/posts/879000/revisions

No, only to set it up. I've used all of Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian and Arch and none of them really need anything to keep the system running.
Presumably, neither do the other two.

1 hour later…
1:05 PM
@ByteCommander If I run all those operating systems at the same time in Qubes OS, does my beard have all those lengths simultaneously, such that all my concurrently growing beards are isolated from one another in a manner that is reasonably secure?
Also, does the narrowing of the lower portion of the Gentoo beard represent how Gentoo is actually reasonably easy to use, once installed?

It's like Schroedinger's cat, I think. The beard has all lengths at the same time until someone checks which OS you are currently operating.

1:49 PM
Sooooooo, I got an email from someone, no clue how he got my name, if I felt like talking about joining their python team in any form? Interesting. So we took a cup of coffee together.
I think he was surprised to see no 20-something year old guy, like himself. He mentioned something like "unfortunately we only hire people for a full job" (can't do, I am a musician). The coffee was nice though.

Q: Community Promotion Ads - 2017

Grace NoteIt is a bit late into this new year, being that we're already in the second month, but we are now cycling the Community Promotion Ads for 2017! What are Community Promotion Ads? Community Promotion Ads are community-vetted advertisements that will show up on the main site, in the right sidebar....

2:19 PM
@NathanOsman You have to add the Chat twitter bot account to our community ads ^^

(j/k)
do all desktops use "/usr/bin/startx"?

All Ubuntu systems, or all systems with X11 at all?

hmm
lets go for Ubuntu flavors only :D
(ie. does lxde also use startx or does it have another command?)
ah darn it
too late :X

Well, at least currently, the xorg package depends on the xinit package, which provides that script.
Lubuntu does also have startx, and uninstalling the package that provides it with APT will uninstall packages without which Lubuntu will have no GUI, yes.
On the other hand, I am unsure if all setups really use startx for anything, since there is no technical reason it must be used.

ls -l /usr/share/xsessions looks better to check

Seriously? startx is still a thing? I thought that was deprecated for years now

3:50 PM
Hmm I remember it worked for someone struggling in 1[46].04 who Anwar was helping a few months ago...

I don't know if using it is deprecated or not, but it is still a package file of xinit. And I have even somewhat recently used it on machines where I want X11 with no automatically enabled display manager and no graphical logins

Where is Anwar these days? :(

stop discussing it! :D :D
