so... why is luks nuke not in debian main alrady?

@NathanOsman did I tell you the store decided not to use my website? I'm trying to refactor it for someone else, that works in the same area, which apparently is willing to make a deal on it

Sorry that the first place doesn't like it - I certainly thought it was pretty awesome.
Anyway, if someone else can use it, that's cool.

they actually said they liked it, but that it was easier for them to add pictures on a Wix website they were working on
I could make a PHP page to add pictures on the page, but I was thinking this was leading anywhere, so I decided to not have this extra work for the small chance they would take it, and for free
lets see how it goes with this other place :)

@Seth congrats

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L Why is that here?

hey theres our man RolandiXor :) how are you, did you get all working like you wanted?
@RobotHumans already edited :)

Hey web designers, I'm working on a css framework: https://github.com/rolandixor/anole

You can take a look, and let me know what you think. Demo is here:
https://rolandixor.pro/anole

Please note that it's not fully responsive (yet)!
it works perfectly, with the exception of opening tabs :)

I'm actually trying to get Patheon-Terminal to do the same thing now. I can get it to open the command, of course, but getting into open tabs as well is the issue.

@RolandiXor yep thats what i fiddled at the whole evening yesterday, there is the --tab option but it didn't seem to do anything

5:11 PM
@Videonauth typical Gnome ;)

@RolandiXor Demo looks good. Seems like a heavier (on animation so maybe on cheap mobiles) bootstrap.js that is CSS based instead.

whe i can trust the man page this should open a new tab in the last opened terminal window
i wonder if this is because of htop in the first window command

@RobotHumans this is pure css
I haven't tested on mobile yet.

@RolandiXor Nice!

@Videonauth hmm, that might explain it

5:12 PM
Can the animation be toned down?
Personally, I find it quite hard to read and tiring. Maybe if it were faster?

@RolandiXor gnome-terminal --maximize && gnome-terminal --tab -- htop still opens two windows

I could work on that :)

I like animations, personally. But if they're an issue, then I'll have to compromise.
@terdon what specifically is running slowly for you?
@Videonauth same here

@RolandiXor I'm sure it's a question of taste. To my eyes, that would be essentially unusable.
@RolandiXor Everything takes ~1sec. So by the time I've moved to one button, the "leave" animation of the previous one is still running.

but another idea would be using screen inside the first call instead of htop and set up a ~/.screenrc file
which then places the information in different parts of the screen like i do on my server

I'm blown away by the smoothness and power of this, mind you, but I would never use a webpage that is so heavy on animation.

5:15 PM
@terdon I'm not having that issue. Are you on mobile?

if something like this could help you

@RolandiXor No. But hovering over an.menu-button for example, it takes 2 seconds (or so, I counted myself) for the menu to stop moving.

@Videonauth that would work for me if I liked using the terminal fullscreen when I'm on a Desktop environment lol

well im spoiled by having three monitors :)

@terdon what browser are you on?
@Videonauth lol I have two (and a laptop)

5:18 PM
@RolandiXor Chromium. Hang on, I just made a gif of it.

┌─[17:18:10]─[root@NEXUS-THREE]
└──> michael $ cat ~/.screenrc
chdir /home/server/log
screen -t "Apache Log" tail -n 1 -f access.log
split
focus
chdir /home/server/log
screen
split -v
focus
screen -t "Htop" htop
focus
focus

@terdon that's mighty weird. I'm testing on Opera and Firefox, and even on mobile it's peppy.

thats the screenrc file for that setup

$ chromium --version
Chromium 61.0.3163.91

5:20 PM
@terdon I could speed up the animations lol

@RolandiXor is that the same thing you see? It might just be a different definition of "peppy" :)

But it's not as slow as you think. You might just be less patient than me lol
@Videonauth that would be nice when I'm working on the servers though

Yeah, might be. But for me that's a deal breaker. And really tiring for my eyes.

@terdon O_o

Yeah. My first thought was that this was hard to see. I think because I try to focus on things that are still moving.

5:21 PM
Well fortunately for you, I've created it to be themable, so it will simply be a matter of overriding the defaults.

@terdon I thought I exaggerated on the number of tabs open, I was wrong
lol

@IanC That's nothing. That's just one of the two windows I have open now and I normally have many more.

BTW did anyone catch the "sunkenplace" reference ;)?

@RolandiXor like the design, but as terdon already said the animations could be a bit quicker maybe by 1/2 or 1/4 of the time used actually

Actually, @IanC I currently have 68 tabs open in 4 windows :)

5:24 PM
and the extra wide button itself should not shrink on hover

@terdon damn, that beats my record by far I guess lol

actually 44 tabs open in 1 window hehehe

I had recently installed an Addon on Firefox to make me able to use less tabs by saving sessions, then Firefox updated and I lost it :/

@Videonauth the extra-wide button is actually just a regular button lol, I have changed it on another page of the demo that isn't linked from the main page.

ah ok because the normal button shows as well the text shrinking and the extra wide shriks the text and the button this is a bit offsetting

5:28 PM
@Videonauth I'm going to speed them up a bit. Trying to strike a balance between speed and smoothness, because anything too fast isn't too pretty.

true and i understand that if they are to fast then the animation is useless

And that's not a record, not by a long shot.

what DE is that?

@RolandiXor True dat.
@Videonauth Cinnamon

one of the challenges is that you can't control certain things with CSS without making it overly complicated (if at all).

For instance, I could use CSS animations (as opposed to transitions) to get the sub-menus to hide until the main menu is visible, but it would be very complex (thus hard to maintain) and it might not show up as smoothly as it does now. Too bad for people with shaky hands like me lol
Okay I've update the animation speed for the offenders.

5:39 PM
@RolandiXor Ooh, that's much better for me!

@terdon whew :)

I got spoiled on the 3 monitor rig, and I really want to like LXQT, but I'm considering i3 even though there's a learning curve.

6:03 PM
@RolandiXor Hah, yes, I'm sure that comes as a huge relief :)
Oh, hey @RobotHumans, been ages!

@terdon I've been in and out infrequently, but it has been a while.

@RolandiXor thats is quite better

If nobody else watched the alphazero games, with four hours of training and less table lookups, alpha brutalized stockfish.

Brutalized might be a bit much, if you're referring to last week's (2 weeks now?) games, but yeah, that was impressive!
Clear victory, by far, but depressingly many draws.
> 28 wins, 72 draws, and zero losses.

Brutalized is a little strong. 100 games/70 something draws/20 something wins/0 losses is something that could never happen between two similarly ranked humans.

6:10 PM
Yeah.

Hence my leaning in to brutalized... but now you know what I meant.

Now, let alphazero work with an opening DB as well and it's bye bye
And stockfish is already what, ~2800 or something?
Man. . .

What was most useful for me was chess advantage in black and white for openings, chess tactics for champions from the polgar daughter, and 10001 chess problems for endgame. If they let it run three engines, it would be ABSURD.

Ah, I keep meaning to get Polgar's book.

If you're a newer player, it covers skewers forks and all those other mid-game tricks. If you never had formal chess education, it's highly useful. If someone taught you those, then you might find it less useful.
Oddly, I don't remember it covering center-court advantage, but everyone knows that... and alpha already knows it.

I didn't know either of you were so into chess :)

I've been playing like crazy since this summer but hadn't played for a while before that.

So I guess we have a new top engine now xD

Yeah, an "AI", no less :)

I haven't played in a long time for lack of even ground opponents locally. You either find people you tear apart, or people that decimate you. It's hard to find real life players where it's a one is slightly better than the other, which is what you need for a learning experience.

6:21 PM
Yeah.

Indeed.
I need to start playing again.

My ideal opponent is one who beats me something like 2 times out of 3.

@terdon Oh that's right. Did you end up using lichess?

I did a little, but I still prefer chess.com. I like their app too.

:/

6:22 PM
Plus, I have some friends who play there so. . .

2 of 3 sounds reasonable to improve your game.

And I enjoy the "tactics" a lot.

@terdon Well that certainly helps a lot.
We used to have an SE club on lichess but it's mostly dead now afaik

@RobotHumans Yeah, so good enough to keep you on your toes but weak enough that you might actually win from time to time :)
Rinz used to play competitively.

@terdon whats the book title?

6:24 PM
@terdon Strong enough to show you your weaknesses, but weak enough that you can explore new things.

I like chess, though I consider myself a bit noob

@IanC " chess tactics for champions" (I think)
@RobotHumans yep
@IanC I'm pretty sure we're all noobs here.
Well, @Rinzwind probably not.
Sep 23 at 18:25, by Rinzwind
hmm. In my prime I had 1800 :=D

Yes. Nobody here is world class at chess.
@IanC books.google.com/books/about/… there's a preview available on google books

Do you/did you ever have a rating @RobotHumans?

@terdon yeah, I meant noob but not in a world class chess player standard, but I think you and @RobotHumans are ahead of me

6:26 PM
@terdon No. I never played competitively.

Me neither. I've reached 1100 on chess.com for what that's worth.

What do you start at on chess.com?

And promptly lost it again :) I'm somewhere around there normally.
@Seth Oh, you start at 1200 but fall precipitously. Or I did, anyway. I clawed my way back from the low 800s.

@terdon Ah. You start at 1500 on lichess iirc. What time control?

That rating is for 5-10mins.
I used to play 10 but now mostly go for 5.
(each)

6:29 PM
@RobotHumans nice, is it more aimed to people with some basic/intermediate background?

@IanC It's aimed at people who know how the pieces move, can play a game, can not get themselves murdered during the opening, and have a grasp of end-game forcing.

@RobotHumans well, I guess that's me maybe :D
I mean, I don't know much about openers except for some keypoints of what is the goal of a good opener, and I try to go for that goal

Had an interesting one about 10 years ago where the guy on a bookstore patio said "You did not just play the blitzkrieg opening against me" on our first game. Then the game went on about 40 turns longer than he expected. It was fun.

like controlling the center, engaging pieces and enabling castling

I got one (whose title I don't remember at the moment, unfortunately, but I can look it up when I get home if anyone cares) recently I'm very pleased with. It's aimed at all levels (you just skip the bits you know) from beginner to IM, very well written and very informative. I'm enjoying it immensely.

6:33 PM
@RobotHumans what is the blitzkrieg opening?

It's a 4 turn win if they mess up, but puts you at a significantly disadvantaged board position if it doesn't work.

@terdon cool, I'm considering getting a chess book to get to know the fundamentals better
@RobotHumans oh, I think I've seen it before
sorry, I'm pinging a lot

bishop queen stack right on top of the king.

Ah, Napoleon's mate?

Same thing, yes.

6:35 PM
@terdon ah. I've read that it's hard to learn playing blitz out the door. Never really played enough to form my own opinion, but that's the rumor.
Of course, most of us don't really have the time to play an hour long game of chess

why is the position a disvantadge one? because the queen exposes itself and you have to retreat if the opponent makes the right play?

Some idiot played that against me the summer I just learned chess. Such a petty thing to do to a newbie. Anyone who's been playing for even a few months and falls for it, deserves it, but there's no point doing it against a noob!

There should be a PBEM like the old days.

Q: Don't highlight directories in ls command in Ubuntu subsystem on Windows 10

georgedumI'm trying to make my Ubuntu subsystem in Windows 10 look like the actual Ubuntu terminal. I followed this guide, and now I'm off to a good start. It's almost perfect, but whenever I use the ls command, directories are automatically highlighted in an ugly green color. Here's a picture: Can an...

@Seth Well, I've played a lot of games with a clock, and a few blitzes. But I only started doing regular blitz games this year, really.

6:37 PM
@IanC The opponent can gain board control of the center, and you sacrifice almost all pawn movement for a hard and fast attack while their pieces are constrained. So, once they open up the board, you only have 2 pieces and pawns in play. So, it's hard.

@Seth Brilliant! :)
In his defense, he'd moved the bishop before he'd seen the queen but ha!

@RobotHumans I'm trying to find the name of an opening that resulted in checkmate if the opponent decided to capture the white queen, it was a cool play because most of black responses were apparently tactically good except for the queen capturing

@Videonauth awesome!

6:41 PM
@terdon I'd like to know, when you get a chance :)

Nice one

it's a common opening apparently, followed by a very tempting pin on the white horse, which is where things start to fall apart

@IanC I expect something like that will come up in the unreleased alphazero games. Like a whittle down queen capture, where it systemically removed the most high value pieces sacrificing whatever it has to, to keep either a knight and a rook or knight and bishop... or even two bishops if it's pawn light to dance around the board mopping the floor even though it accepted an early disadvantage.

I think sacrificing a queen is usually a really effective way to pull the opponent into a trap, I was reading that many big games with chess masters had big turnouts on queen sacrifices

6:46 PM
as long as you're very confident of what comes next :p

it's the knight. a revealed check skewer - and i screwed up.

:)

I thought bishop but the pawn is protecting the square

that pawn move is nice. i would have seen it if i saw the lead in move though

@RobotHumans Of course. But it's really interesting how it didn't even occur to you (well, it didn't to me, anyway) that it could have been that. Just shows how we get stuck in a way of thought.
If you're Carlsen or something, you might have found it given that you knew that there was a mate in one.

6:52 PM
that's true. the lead in move tells you to remove the pawn though.
either way, my playstyle is to continue removing material instead of looking for really hard mates, which is where alpha could really shine if it went the other way.

damn, I would probably not think of that since I didn't know that move in chess until a couple months ago lol

It was added when the pawns got the right to make it ve two squares in the first move

what ever happened to the pawns can't strike on first move rule? it's notably absent in the alpha games.
it made you use pawns aggressively for board control instead of using them as a fodder rank.

It's also an illegal position. Not really a good puzzle IMO. Interesting for sure, but not good.

Illegal?
And no, it's a trick, just interesting. But why illegal?

7:07 PM
Pawn structure at e2 is near impossible to achieve. I'm not saying it's totally impossible, but that's what I see.
e3 should have been captured to get that pawn position

@terdon All the pieces are on the board, which means it would be impossible to achieve the pawn positions on the a and e files
and the d file

still, it's a puzzle, not a snapshot from a game. so, i'ld let it pass, but nice catch on illegal position.

man, I think my pull request is going to be merged! :D

@Seth Ah, yes, good catch indeed.
You could get the same puzzle legally though, I think. I guess they just couldn't be bothered to :)

the owner of the project just asked me to make a small change (using an existing method that did exactly what I was doing in some lines of code)

7:20 PM
I suspect that puzzle was designed to put a bunch of pieces in precarious positions and let people play it out. Not force a one move mate.

Whoops, have to run. But we should set up an AU chess tournament one of these days!
Even if only to let @Rinzwind beat us there too :P

@terdon I could join, though I think I wouldn't pass the first match :p

I wouldn't either. It has been WAY too long

@Seth I did not. Some of them are obvious bots, but I suspect at least some of them are human. It would be an interesting ML game. Trying to teach a robot to have a sense of humor.

@Seth Have you settled into a new distro? What's your current thoughts?

@chaskes Sticking with 16.04 for now.
Unity is just too good :/

I saw some articles that the ubports project is still going strong for now.
Lately I've been going light with xfce or even just openbox by itself.
