Boy. Something went obscenely wrong with this build: ci.quickmediasolutions.com/job/nitroshare/208/…
Looks like CPack somehow got stuck in an infinite loop.

God I love python for reading human readable ascii files lines = list(map(lambda x: x.strip('\n'), lines)) bam and trailing new lines are cut out, and swoosh lines = list(map(lambda x: f'{x}\n', lines)) back in :) (python 3.6)

Q: Why "eog" can't show my image in fullscreen? are there any better choice?

user8663682I am using eog inside my c++ code for showing some images. But unfortunately it has borders when I use it on raspberrypi. I tried it by this command: system("eog --fullscreen --disable-gallery --single-window 1.jpg &"); It's strange because it has no borders when I try it on my laptop! So...

Q: How to wipe md raid meta?

ikudykI have Ubuntu 16.04 host with 3 Ubuntu 17.10 guests in KVM (Virtual Machine Manager 1.3.2). I export several block devices from 2 guests to the other guest (let's call it frontend) via iSCSI portal created by targetcli util. Having imported them, I heavily use multipath to find same "physical" d...

Just remember: whitespace for scope.

@dessert huh ?

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy nevermind, that was dumb ;P

@dessert OK. But don't hesitate to ask, I'm always trying to answer even dumb questions, which often aren't so dumb as they seem.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy OK, for the record: I was wondering why grep -q "^user " couldn't be shortened to grep -q"^user " “as always” – of course that's wrong because the expression is not a parameter to the -q option, but an argument to grep.

Yup, and also that's $user, ans whitespace because output of who is whitespace separated. You're all good there
Unless username has trailing whitespace, in which case it's a mess

Alright, I think with 55,708 rep and +80 by this hour already, I can go get some sleep. I go toal of 5 hours of sleep in the last 24 hours...or technically 48

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Sleep well!

Q: I upgrade atom but its version does not change

Rıdvan SumsetI am a ubuntu-16.04 user and want to upgrade atom to use teletype package. What I do is: go to atom's releases page( github.com/atom/atom/releases ) install the latest version which is 1.24.0-beta1 (atom-amd64.deb) sudo dpkg --install atom-amd64.deb on terminal. It says Unpacking atom-beta (1....

Good afternoon, everyone!
(Though it feels like morning to me because I led a Shadowrun adventure until 5 a.m. last night.)
Could someone please flag or vote to close askubuntu.com/questions/980283/… as a duplicate (see comments)? I already used and retracted my close vote earlier.

@DavidFoerster Hi! I also already voted on this question unfortunately…

Q: "Can I run Ubuntu on my hardware?" questions: a discussion

ZannaAsk Ubuntu receives large numbers of questions like this example posted today asking "I have this laptop, can I install Ubuntu on it?" These questions tend to attract low quality answers (as the above example has), usually receive downvotes and are often closed, either as unclear, too broad, pri...

> Remind can be made to run under Windows if you compile it with the Cygwin tools. However, I prefer you not to do that. Microsoft is quite hostile to free software, and I'd prefer you to run Remind on a platform that is not controlled by a free-software-hostile corporation.

> Apple Policy
> Remind can be made to run under Mac OS X, but I prefer you not to do that. Apple is even more hostile than Microsoft to openness, using both technical and legal means to hobble what its customers and developers are allowed to do. If you are thinking of buying an Apple product, please
From roaringpenguin.com/products/remind – I like this software…
Tim Bray, a major Internet technology pioneer, said it best in his blog post:
> The iPhone vision of the mobile Internet's future omits controversy, sex, and freedom, but includes strict limits on who can know what and who can say what. It's a sterile Disney-fied walled garden surrounded by sharp-toothed lawyers. The people who create the apps serve at the landlord's pleasure and fear his anger.
> I hate it.

Q: Why would a bash script create a file with the name of one of my variables?

Native CoderI'm using this bash script to maintain 3 backups of my server. For some reason, it randomly creates an empty file with the name of one of my variables. The variable name it chooses is seemingly random, and it doesn't create the file every single time that it's run. I'm running Ubuntu Server 16.0...

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L presumably because you told it to do exactly that

Can we get this hammered please askubuntu.com/q/986851/367990

@Seth -^

Looks like it already got hammered.

3:58 PM
@Seth Isn't this something that should be deleted?

@dessert I don't see any reason to manually delete it. The system will clean it up in a month or so. If I personally delete it that will only validate their misguided beliefs.

@Seth ok :)

4:54 PM
Ugh, I just noticed something very weird
You know these dotted lines appearing in chat that are supposed to tell you how far you have read
well, I see those lines "continuing" on my Unity Launcher icons
I wonder if it's a graphics driver or display hardware issue

Hello everyone :)

The dots don't appear on screenshots and when I move another window above the lines in the browser, they gradually fade away depending on how much of them is covered

5:11 PM
@ThomasWard Congratulations Thomas ! :)

A dumb question maybe: remind runs as a daemon and outputs text to stdout. I can pipe it to e.g. sed to alter the output, but how can I pipe to e.g. zenity to get a graphical notification? Simply doing remind | zenity doesn't work, that just runs zenity once and stops – I basically need something that listens to the pipe and runs zenity whenever the pipe spits something out.

7:30 PM
… and I described exactly the behaviour of xargs -L1, never mind. :)

I've returned, with a semi-urgent puzzle to solve:

Q: Apt isn't showing the latest packages, but gives no errors

RolandiXorI am having an issue where my system is apparently unable to see that there are new packages available in the enabled repositories. It updates the repos with no notably significant errors, but still misses many of the available updates. How do I rectify this? username@insert-host-name-here:~$ s...

@RolandiXor Interesting. You do realize though update is not the same as upgrade, do you? ;P What tells you you have this exact version of firefox installed?

@dessert Synaptic. And please, don't... just... don't :)
Check my rep, buddy.

@RolandiXor Yes, I was wondering, but why don't you give this info in your question?

@dessert you mean that I checked in Synaptic?

many people will comment and propose you should “just close and open again” firefox to see the change
or that you should do apt upgrade to actually upgrade… n stuff

8:00 PM
I can't upgrade to something if my system can't see it...
I'm not sure how you're reading the details of the question or why you're talking to me in such a condescending manner (it was funny at first).

@RolandiXor Sorry if it seemed so, that was in no way my intention! English is not my mother tongue, you must know – just tried to help.

@dessert oh okay no worries.

Greetings.
Jenkins just spit out a 120MB logfile from a build.
On the plus side, it's really quick to download since it GZIPs quite nicely.
Logfile has 1,867,998 lines.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy how are you doing Serg? :)

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Oh yeah, right!

@IanC Alive, pretty much OK. Procrastinating slightly in chat

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy coding a lot lately? How's this semester at college going?

@IanC Meh, not much coding going on, but maybe later will do more. Semester went alright, but definitely failing one. Frankly, I don't even wanna think about it for now.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy I see, but don't worry too much about it, I had some semesters on college where failing just one would have been a good outcome lol

10:25 PM
@IanC Nah, I'm beyond worrying. I'm fine.
gtg, bye guys

see you later man!
man, I really have to work on some vim settings for HTML/CSS/JS programming
