@Videonauth chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/41217938#41217938 I really like this one you mentioned

@dessert yes its quite handy, if you have a long long post and lower case i for I :p

@Videonauth There are plenty of other answers of the same quality there, I'd say that's due to the nature of the question.
wait, question is pdf→mobi and this answer suggests epub→something else?

@dessert this and i just VTC on that question

doesn't answer the question

hi @Videonauth

As of now your question still reads more like a rant as a question. And bethink we are only users of Ubuntu and users on this site too and in no way affiliated with Canonical. We can't make the change you ask for, to be asked if UI changes happen. For the rest it is better to ask a single question for each. Include what you tried to make it happen yourself, browse Ask Ubuntu and you might even already find answers on how to do what you want. So since you're complaining about that Ubuntu has changed so much its best to roll back to an earlier Version of Ubuntu, thus the close. — Videonauth 5 mins ago
someone might speak a word with this guy who posted that question
tried to make my comment as neutral as possible tho

@Videonauth The OP hasn't made a single comment, meanwhile there are 9 on the question. I think he's gotten enough words for now ;)

well he changed his question multiple times about half an hour ago and stated there that it is a cop-out call to close as duplicate
thus my comment i linked
and another one below it because i ran out of characters :P

@Videonauth Fair enough. I still don't have anything to add though.
He's not really opened any dialogue.

Obviously has no idea how system upgrades work. Who expects that?

me not :)
but im running anyways bleeding edge, always on propsal branch
hell even my VLC gets updated daily lol, because the stable branch doesnt satisfies me and im reluctant to use a snap to get VLC 3.0

and even the duplicate is exact when you read his first sentence :)
| Is there a simple way to undo a system upgrade?

5:00 AM
Reinstalling is often simple, though in practice not always. Besides that or restoring a backup, no. Downgrading to a previous release isn't supported, and attempts to do it with the package manager are likely to fail and should only be undertaken for fun on systems created for that purpose.

@terdon can you have a look at some flags i casted while we where cleaning up a Q&A?

4:30 PM
need regex help again
I have this block to comment out:
service ccmd /system/bin/ccmd
    class core
    user system
    group system
socket ccmd stream 0660 root system
    seclabel u:r:ccmd:s0
and I'm using this expression: '/^service ccmd /system/bin/ccmd$/,/^$/{/^\(#\|$\)/!s/^/#/}'
but it doesn't work

4:47 PM
@TheWanderer sed '\_^service ccmd /system/bin/ccmd$_,/^$/s/^/# /'

how does that know where to end?

if you use / as a delimiter then you can't use it in the regex, so either escape it or use a different delimiter.

so if I escape the /system/bin/ccmd it should work?

yes, or use \_ and _ as the delimiter for the first regex as I did above
it goes from service ccmd /system/bin/ccmd to the first empty line ^$ replacing ^ with # .

do I need that backslash in the very beginning?

4:52 PM
yes, that tells sed you want the escaped sign as the delimiter
or use sed '/^service ccmd \/system\/bin\/ccmd$/,/^$/s/^/# /' as the alternative

so this '\_^service ccmd /system/bin/ccmd$_,/^$/{/^\(#\|$\)/!s/^/#/}'

i must admit i don't really get the whole curly bracket, what are you doing there?

idk
David gave me this regex

to achieve what again?

I think it's supposed to avoid putting a # where there already is one?

4:56 PM
oh, ok – that may very well be. just try it with sed without the -i option to check.

that's what it does on another block of text

ah, now i get it, yes!

as long as it isn't interfering

it doesn't comment lines beginning with # and empty lines

yay it worked!
thanks again for the help

4:57 PM
you're welcome :)

and putting up with my pretty extreme lack of regex knowledge lol

:) don'T fret yure not alone with this, simply regexes ok but as soon it gets tricky i bail out :D

yeah
it also doesn't help that I usually use Java regex, which is a little different

5:03 PM
it's way easier to just bug you guys though :p

indeed ;)

@ByteCommander that's the best one, but none of them allows you to test something like '\_/system/bin/ccmd_,/^$/s/x/y/'

That's a sed command though, not a regular expression (it just contains those)

yeah, right – but is there a tester for that?

I don't think so...
at least not online
You could make one :P
This looks useful though (python sed debugger script):
13
A: How do you "debug" a regular expression with sed?

Dennis WilliamsonThere is a Python script called sedsed by Aurelio Jargas which will show the stepwise execution of a sed script. A debugger like this isn't going to help much in the case of characters being taken literally (e.g. {) versus having special meaning (e.g. \{), especially for a simple substitution, bu...

5:59 PM
@ByteCommander you could play html files audiowise if you implement lets say a script which reads the file byte by bate and then alter the pitch of a standard note according to the ASCII value of the actual byte --> askubuntu.com/questions/977784/…
:P
if its pleasent for the ears it might be a different thing

@seth your busy? you might want to have a look at all answers given by this user, simply shotgun copy&paste answering --> askubuntu.com/users/761541/jjgallow

@Videonauth I'd rather enjoy my self-scripted ocean waves than that tbh

:) hehehe
i wonder if it would be possible using deep learning AI and a webcrawler to make music this way

not bad

Q: How can I upgrade from Ubuntu 5.10 to 16.04?

Gunn KhatriI have an old computer with important custom softwares. I don't have reinstallation copy of the softwares and don't want to loose them. Took a clone of the hard drive as a safe backup before I mess it up. Is there anyway I can upgrade the old Ubuntu 5.10 to more recent version of Ubuntu lets say ...

Oh my god...

yea i just saw that
12 years of missed upgrades :p
well 11 but still

7:11 PM
Well, I also still have boxes standing around with XP, 98 or even 3.11, but those are meant to stay that way... for archive purposes ;)

I *still* get amused about this everyday problem:
I have 6.5 million files lying around and want to have a randomized sample, so how do I copy 300k random files to some other directory? It's not as if I have enough gargabe already…
2
Q: How to copy random files to a specific folder?

mejilloniusI have vast collection of files (6.5 million) in several folders and sub-folders and i want to copy some random picks (about 200k-300k files) to a directory to make a randomized sample. the folder tree is this (just a small sample) inside each folder there are several files . ├── articles.0-9A...

well then he has 6,8 mil files laying around :p

if i want a sample, why not go for a simple file list?

i probaly would not even do that, i just would sample from the program i want this samles for directly one by one untill i have reached my amount of samples processed

7:26 PM
but this way you could get double hits

@dessert you could check for that inside the program?
well im a pythoneer :D

yes of course ;) god knows what OP there is up to…

and ram is not really a limitation nowadays
@dessert here is one you can have a go at if you like askubuntu.com/questions/381380/…

@Videonauth huh, tricky one

7:41 PM
yep thats one i revisit from time to time but not yet found a proper solution or procedure

if only i had such insight :(

i tried to make a script for this to use diff and redeploy the patches if asked for but never got to a point i was able to answer

why don't you just post it? even if it's not complete, it's certainly a point to start from – this question will never get an answer else!

because i disklike downvotes and unless im actually 100% sure my solution works i wont post it
:)

that's understandable, but a pity nevertheless

im actually going again through the unanswered que and have a look if not there is a question which could be answered. Even wrote an answer earlier on one --> askubuntu.com/a/977801/522934

@Videonauth is there any way I can blame the current state of the flags queue on you

@ThomasWard no i was pretty tame today
but here is something you can vent on if you like :) askubuntu.com/users/761541/jjgallow all 10 answers are exact the same

can I just light everything on fire and laugh maniacally?

@Videonauth well that user's handled now

my train to home has been delayed like 10 times so i've been stuck in the train station for an ungodly amount of time
so i've every right to be annoyed at the universe right now

8:19 PM
@Videonauth can i divert my wrath upon you for the next hour :p

well if you feel this is neccesary i simply go and play terraria as long ;)

this is my current item playing. It's helping. But it's also driving the EVIL higher.

if you would have gotten delayed this much by german trains, you could take a cab and send them the receipt

@Videonauth i can still sue them. but it's not like i'm in the most rush to get home :P
so i'll just send them my coffee bill.
(read as: $450 of coffee)

lol
tbh many of the question in unanswered que, especially the really old ones could be closed i think

good evening fabby
Can somone explain me this odd behavior of this script:
#!/bin/bash
find /var/log/ -type f \( -name "*.gz" -o -name "*.1" -o -name "*.old" \) -delete
find /var/log/ -type f -exec truncate -s 0 {} \;
wenn i call it where ever i want it works unless i have a file examle.log in the present working directory, then it fails to truncate the .log files in /var/log

10:40 PM
Yay, I contributed to something ! unix.stackexchange.com/questions/405475/…

ah the master of bash is here :) hello @SergiyKolodyazhnyy

do you maybe have an idea why my script is behaving like i described?

See no apparent problem with it, unless somehow /var/log turns into ./ via evil magic

well i see the following behavior, if im calling it from a folder where no file ends in .log it works fine
if im calling it from a folder where at least one file is ending in .log it fails to truncate the log files in /var/log
└──> log $ /home/michael/script/clean-logs
find: paths must precede expression: error.log.1
Usage: find [-H] [-L] [-P] [-Olevel] [-D help|tree|search|stat|rates|opt|exec] [path...] [expression]
well ok it seems to nuke the logs in /var/log but still it nags about this every time messing up my cronjob mail on my little server
but only if i end up leaving my ssh session open and be in the log file folder for the apache.log

10:54 PM
So i copied over your commands, without the -exec and -delete of course, and all seems to work alright. Do cat -A yourscript.sh, maybe you have an extra special character there or something. The error happens only when you reverse things, like in find -type f /var/log What's possible is that you haven't properly added ( , maybe there's space somewhere. In that case, it makes sense. -name "*.log" would get expanded by shell
although, no it doesn't because of the double quotes
Try also to add set -x at the beginning of the script, see what commands actually run.

it runs fine when im for example in my home directory, but lets say i create a file with touch test.log there i get this output

@Videonauth OK, still try cat -A and set -x suggestions. I can't really see anything wrong with the commands

ok sec i just tested something and i think now its working correctly, i rewrote the script and now it does not output any errors
seems that there really had a special character put in even i didnt see it even in nano

nano doesn't show special chars
But vim does . . . I remember there was an option for that somewhere . . . .

just wonder how such a caracter could get in there since im using pure utf-8 since i started with linux

11:04 PM
I am having trouble locating Update Manager linux mint

not messing with iso

@Dale we're not Mint community , so we wouldn't know. But try to run "update-manager" from terminal. If it's using same command as Ubuntu it should come up
Otherwise, you can always ask a question on unix.stackexchange.com , those guys are open to Minty questions :)
And here's another bad joke I came up with: "If you put a Linux shell to your ear, you can hear Linus Torvalds swearing, Ken Thompson and Denis Ritchie swearing at PDP-11, and Bash author swearing at Shellshock"
OK, I'll see myself out of the room now . . . . .

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy I think this community is much nicer, I will install ubuntu

@Dale Mint rolled their own update system. I haven't used it in a while, so I can't say much about it; but it's very different from stock Ubuntu. Either use apt from command line or use the mint graphical updater (which should be in system tray)

@Dale Hooray ! Another satisfied user, I guess :) If you're open to suggestions, try Ubuntu Budgie first, it's quite a lovely new addition to the array of flavors in Ubuntu world

11:12 PM
I don't think MyLinuxLive has that option

also yeah, what chaskes said. apt-get or apt always there as alternative to GUI tools

no u

@Videonauth I'd say it's non-release specific issues OP is having, although yeah - 16.10 is EOL

I just tried Ubuntu Budgie and it's very nice. Mate and Xubuntu also recommended for new users, especially with an underpowered computer

11:14 PM
@TheWanderer to u or not to u, what is the question ? @_0 derp

Although I did contribute to Ubuntu Wiki, that's a plus.

duh

No, what makes #illuminati_confirmed is the fact that Window's PowerShell is object oriented, they basically tried to make shell that behaves like .Net framework...whatever that means. I've been taking a video course on it couple nights ago

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy wait till he gets in production environments and suddently all the servers are linux based

yay :D that will be fun, i wish i could be there then :P
