@Rinzwind @Serg FYI : This was the answer I was talking about -> askubuntu.com/questions/710535/… @terdon guided me to find a space between the of= part and linux.bin ... :)

Any one online?

@UbuntuUser YES ! :) Hello UbuntuUser ! :)

@UbuntuUser you have exactly 30 seconds to ask a question before AU room explodes
( joking of course )

1:16 PM
@UbuntuUser What about you ? Are YOU online ? :D :D :D

DerpWolf drove him off

@Zacharee1 Who is DerpWolf ? :D

Sergiy

oh derpflower is here

fresh Ruby Indicator out of the oven @Serg, pretty small code, not even sure if its worth going to GitHub
just a capslock indicator

1:24 PM
@IanC ah, i've done same thingy in python
What did you use to detect caps lock being on ? xset ?
@Zacharee1 Hi, Zach. How's it going ?
@edwinksl yes, derpwolf is in da haus, turn on dead maus !

@Serg yeah, Gtk3 has a built in function to recover capslock state, but libappindicator still uses Gtk2

O_O wat , gtk3 has that ?

@Serg Hey you are speaking German ? Nice ... :)

yeah, gtk_keymap_get_caps_lock_state, guess that's the function

@cl-netbox lol, that was my poor attempt at being cool

1:26 PM
@Serg attempt ??? you ARE cool man ! :D ... or with the words @Zanna would have chosen : SUPERCOOL ! :D :D :D

welp . . .it's 6:27 AM and derpwolf needs some sleep . . . I . . . have no excuse and no explanation for why i am still awake

@Serg Then do it ! Go to sleep ! Sleep well Sergiy ! :)

Yup. Will do that . . . Bye guys ! May the shell be with you !

@Serg good night man, May the shell be with you too!

I finally made my computer make typewriter sounds! :)
@cl-netbox Sorry I left!

1:33 PM
clacks his keyboard @UbuntuUser

@terdon Maybe you missed it -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/34771899#34771899 I am indeed interested to know whether you write every of your sometimes "complicated" commands explicitly (no copy-paste) without making a mistake ? :)

Yep! @JourneymanGeek

I usually test everything I write. So I'll write it in a script and test it, and then copy the script into the answer.

@UbuntuUser oh, my keyboard makes clicky sounds cross platform

1:34 PM
Oh, someone got 10K

Even does it if its not plugged in

@JourneymanGeek I have a very new laptop

@UbuntuUser I have a fairly not new mechanical keyboard ;p

@JourneymanGeek I have two old ones though!

@terdon Yes, that's what I do as well ... and when it works, I copy it into a .txt file to make use of it when it is needed again. :)

1:36 PM
Does anyone code JavaScript?

@UbuntuUser No reason to be sorry ! :)

@cl-netbox I'm not, but still sorry!
@cl-netbox well I'm really sorry, sorry if you don't want me to be sorry!
What does ubuntu use for code? C, C+, C++???

@JourneymanGeek Do you use o rings?

@UbuntuUser Then be sorry ! :) hahaha :D

@terdon no

1:38 PM
Weirdo :P

I actually want the full travel, and if I wanted quieter keys, I'd get a different switch type

I have said sorry for saying sorry to much, well I am Canadian! @cl-netbox

Also, I've had this keyboard... for years

I have the thick blue ones and would still be happier if my keyboard were more silent. The noise is the price I pay for the pleasure of using it.

its kinda grown on me
@terdon its a bit like a v8. Gotta have the vroooooom

1:40 PM
I'm thinking of putting felt on my keyboard, and leaving it by the wood stove! So it warms my fingers up!

I tend to go out of my way to make everything silent. I've even bought two silent mice (neither of which was very good, alas). So the keyboard is a really weird exception for me.

@UbuntuUser Better being friendly and kind than the opposite ! You're welcome dear Canadian Ubuntu User ! :) By the way I am living in Germany ... :)

If it weren't such a joy to type on, I'd throw it out the window.

Haha!

@terdon could have gotten quieter switches then

1:40 PM
@JourneymanGeek I have the browns.

I got the blues cause they're very good transitional switches

Does it get any more silent than that?

arn't the browns quiet?
reds
and maybe clears

@JourneymanGeek For a given value of quiet, yes.

@cl-netbox what does ubuntu use for programing language? C? C+? C++?

1:41 PM
I do get what you mean tho

@JourneymanGeek Clears I think are as silent as browns. I thought they were more so, but apparently not. The main difference is in the actuation, not the sound.
And are you sure the reds are more silent?

@UbuntuUser The kernel and main tools are in C. Not C++, Linux hates it.
Other things are shell scripts, perl or python.

@UbuntuUser I don't know ... I have no clue about programming at all ... not one of my strengths ... they are on other fields ... :)

OK! Thanks, I now now what language to learn. (I want to make a rover that is autonomous)

1:43 PM
Never used reds tho

@cl-netbox I'm not too good a JavaScript and HTML or any other language for that matter!

if I was retiring my old blue blackwidow I'd be agonising brtween clears and greens.
and they're very different keys
also I donno if I'd go tenkeyless
I hardly use that cluster, but I'm used to having them around

@JourneymanGeek Ah, but those are new. They're not the normal reds which aren't actually silent.

I'll go help someone, I mostly edit, so bye guys!

1:45 PM
lol
I'm currently in a lull in terms of hardware. I'm out of touch ;p

@UbuntuUser Goodbye ! :) See you later ! :)

@cl-netbox Nope I'm back!
Changed my mind after an edit!

@UbuntuUser Nice ... :)

@Zacharee1 heh, that's really kind of cool!

right?

1:49 PM
@cl-netbox I get most of my rep from edits now, 50 rep over two days! (You can tell if it is my edit because I always say Thanks or something like that)

we can also tell it's your edit because it'll have your name right there

guys, is the only step necessary to make a program start on login to create a .desktop file on ~/.config/autostart?

@Zacharee1 naise

ikr

It seems to be working with my binary executables, but I tried adding a ruby script and it's not running on login

1:50 PM
@UbuntuUser wow ... that's a lot ... :)

Haha @Zacharee1 true true!

that thing cut through that seatbelt like it was nothing

is there some extra step for scripts?

@IanC little bit of praying: "pls work pls work pls work"

@cl-netbox yep! I noticed that people have bad formatting and spelling!

1:51 PM
you should see the spam posts

spam posts? how do I find them?

@Zacharee1 lol

@UbuntuUser yes that's true ... sometimes it's hard to understand what's meant ... :)

@cl-netbox yep!
bye

@UbuntuUser bye :)

1:54 PM
@IanC you might need to run it in a terminal.

@terdon by adding Terminal=true to the desktop entry?

Worth a try, anyway.
Could be various things but I'd have to see both the script and the desktop file to be sure. Sounds like it might make a good question for the site :)

@terdon The desktop file is the following (I basically copied it from the .desktop entries Start Up Manager wrote for my other indicators and changed the entries to the new indicator):
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=/home/$USER/Executables/CapslockI/CapslockI.rb
Hidden=false
NoDisplay=false
X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
Name[en_US]=CapslockI
Name=CapslockI
Comment[en_US]=Capslock key state indicator
Comment=Capslock key state indicator

@SmokeDetector "download from the official site" links to random manual site

@IanC hmm, does $USER work in .desktop files? I wouldn't expect it to. Try using the full path instead.

1:57 PM
Hello everyone

@terdon sorry, I copied the installation script desktop entry, it's already substituted by the time it's written in the ~/.config/autostart/ entry

@Hizqeel Hi ! :) Is your cat back ?

@terdon wow, two of the three spam answers on that Q are for the same site

@Hizqeel hey Hizqeel, how are you doing?

@cl-netbox o/ hi.... Not yet ;( ;(

1:59 PM
@Hizqeel oh oh oh ... it's two days now - right ?

@IanC I am fine What about you? Everything fine
@cl-netbox yes it is :( :( ;(

@Hizqeel :(:(:( Sometimes cats leave their home for several days for whatever reason and then return ... let's hope that in this case it'll be the same ! :)

@cl-netbox Anyhow Still waiting for her... How are you?

@Hizqeel I am fine today - thank you ! :)

@Hizqeel all good!

2:02 PM
@cl-netbox People don't like her I am just worried more about that if anyone harmed her....

@Hizqeel yes you already said this ... do you think she might have been killed ?

I was laughing from yesterday about that 6 stars most awesome user

@Hizqeel I wouldn't think that, unless your neighbors are real a$$* I don't think they wouldn't harm your cat as much as they don't like her

Staples stop sending me these emails

@cl-netbox No I don't think that and don't want to think about that but worried someone should have hurt her but lets see when she will return

2:06 PM
@Hizqeel I hope the very best for you and "keep my fingers crossed" (as we say in Germany) that she comes back without being hurt ! :)

@IanC my neighbors like that cat a lot but their kids are evil
@cl-netbox thank you for such kind words :)

@Hizqeel You're welcome - I really do mean it ... you are a very nice guy ! :)

@terdon I tried adding Terminal=true, I think I noticed some terminal flashing on login, but still not working. Maybe it's something on the script then
though it's working when called from terminal
@Hizqeel well, still hoping for her return!

@cl-netbox thank you :)
@IanC :)

@IanC Yeah, it could be any number of things. Ask a question!

2:15 PM
@terdon ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=790641, apparently I need a bash script to run it, will try that solution
oooooh, I think I know what might be going on
I'm using "./" in the script -.-
I'll work with full paths, maybe that's crashing the indicator

@IanC Yeah, that would do it. There's no reason why a shell script would be needed.
I just tested with a perl script and it works fine. However, Cinnamon added a shebang line pointing to xdg-open when I chose "mark as trusted". That might also be a decent workaround:
#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=/home/terdon/scripts/foo.pl
Hidden=false
NoDisplay=false
X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
Name[en_US]=CapslockI
Name=CapslockI
Comment[en_US]=Capslock key state indicator
Comment=Capslock key state indicator
That runs a little perl script that writes something to a file. Works as expected when double clicking the .desktop file.

@terdon mine is not marked as trusted, but it worked on all other indicators even when they were not marked as trusted neither, maybe the "trust" policy is more strict with scripts?
I just checked and I was actually using full paths
nevermind
found the error, and it's about the path

Yeah, you just need the .desktop file to be executable. The shebang is optional.

@David Foerster hi dave
@David Foerster I believe I made a mistake on that one. My apologies!

2:37 PM
@terdon my parents got here, gonna have to finish fixing the script later, but I guess the issue is figured! Thanks terdon!
see you all later!

2:50 PM
@IanC "se meu cachorro falasse tudo seria poesia - ux designer e gente finíssima" -- If my dog could speak, eveything would be possible -- UX designer and fine gentleman?

I am guessing poesia actually means poetry as in "everything would work like a dream" and gente finissima means fine people. As in "Mary's good people".

sudo apt-get purge php.*
how do i install again

You don't. Ever. And good riddance.

lolol

If you insist, I would guess sudo apt-get install php would work but why do that to yourself?

3:00 PM
i was adviced to learn php though

E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'php7.0'
i tried the same but i'm getting the above error again and again

@Zacharee1 woof

sudo apt-get purge php.*
how do i install again
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'php7.0'
i tried the same but i'm getting the above error again and again

@SachinSridhar No, you must have tried something else if you got that error. Nobody mentioned php7.0
And stop repeating yourself please, that's just rude.
What happens if you run the command I gave you?
sudo apt-get install php
@edwinksl Don't take programming advice from your hamster!

I'm getting this error - : Package 'php' has no installation candidate

3:08 PM
@SachinSridhar OK. That's odd. What Ubuntu are you running?

15.10

@SachinSridhar That's no longer supported, that's probably why you can't find it. Upgrade to a supported release.

:) Yes now I have 83 rep! (63 from edits)
@JourneymanGeek I'm thinking of compiling my own kernel, any notes?

@SachinSridhar In case it comes in handy, here's how to upgrade from an EoL release whose repositories are no longer working. This will also enable you to install packages on it from the repositories without upgrading, including php, presumably. But you should really upgrade. (Unpatched security vulnerabilities and all... bad always, but particularly frightening if this is a server running php!)

Q: How to install software or upgrade from an old unsupported release?

made_in_indiaRecently I have installed an older version of Ubuntu on my old machine. When ever I am trying to install any software it is giving error sudo -i apt-get install vlc The error being flagged is under below. Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading st...

3:38 PM
@terdon I'm just guessing. poesia sounded like posible, and seria sounds like sería, which is conditional
and gente would make more sense in your context

Yeah, I'm just guessing from Spanish too. I'm sure Ian will let us know :)

hue

some portuguese?

but yeah, poesia is poetry
@Zanna sí senhora
don't quote me on that, I only know Spanish

lol

3:40 PM
looks like I might be right
yay :D

hehe well done

4:19 PM
Please. The pain. Make it stop. Make it stop!
That's not how any of this works. Stock images from @Shutterstock #WTF #IT #humour #sysadmin https://t.co/PlReZkv7nF

@Seth I, too, remove my CPU with a wrench

I normally leave mine where it belongs...

why so much spam in the daytime?

r/EnoughAUSpam

4:32 PM
@Seth Like this?
Mar 9 '15 at 20:24, by ByteCommander
user image

...

@ByteCommander does it have a chip infection?

No, it was dead. I got it when it was broken already, because I had another notebook of the same model and hoped that I might swap some components, mainly the GPU which was broken on my one.
However, they applied so much love, glue and solder to that chip that it was impossible to get them out anyway...
So I had some fun with it :P

woah linux did pretty well stackoverflow.com/research/…

why are people developing on macOS?

4:43 PM
iunno, but i do know a lot of devs like macbooks

but why
if you like lightweight and non-functional, use a Chromebook

they like the UI? cool factor? herd mentality?

turd mentality >:)

Guys, OSX is probably the best UNIX out there. The only drawback I see to developing on a mac is the keyboard layout and that's easy to solve.
@Zacharee1 How are macs non-functional?

4:55 PM
Good evening @Videonauth ! :) Congrats for passing 10K ! :)

@Videonauth You think that's @Zacharee1? :P

@cl-netbox thank you and good evening to you

@Videonauth Thanks ! :)

@terdon no just hilarious

Oh. What's funny?
I must be missing something.

4:57 PM
@terdon well it's more the software imo. It's just so restricted, like ChromeOS.

homebrew should be preinstalled on mac os

the screens are cool because they're so high res, but that doesn't really cause a gain in anything but price
Go 4k on a 27" screen, not a 12" (unless it's a tablet)

@Zacharee1 Yes, that's a good reason to dislike macs. They are indeed restricted (though there are ways around that), However, and unlike most other such OSs, the actual OS is very good.
