Evil sayings: "DOWN BEFORE YOUR MASTER!"

This looks like an easy question if you have Unity... askubuntu.com/questions/816059/…

7:23 AM
What is?
Killing hotmail was a good step. Let's do MSN and Windows pls

sure

Wait no
That will drive everyone over to Apple

Lets kill apple and windows!
So they will drive everyone to Linux!

Then... Mint.

meh, let them be . . .

7:27 AM
But Linux is objectively better
I mean according to the theory of evolution, Windows should be dead. I guess creationism is real...

What is this "Paper Mario Color Splash" racket about?
its on google, its on bing, its EVERYWHERE

The next No Man's Sky

Oh yeah
NO MANS SKY

Linux is better, that's true. But . . . it's sort of an acquired taste . . .

Like other good things! Beer, for one...

7:33 AM
olives
Linux wasn't an acquired taste for me... love at first boot

Linux is better only because noobs usually keep their hands off it.

lol
didn't quite work out for me the first time
I had no idea how a package manager worked ;p

Or... Other things I won't mention because Edity is impressionable...

My first Linux was Ubuntu 13.04 . That day I skipped class, since i was somewhat depressed, went to the library , and installed 13.04. Took forever to install from 13.04 DVD
At first I was like "Uh . . .wow, this is different , but I like it"

7.04 here... God that was fun.
Damn, I've been using Ubuntu for 9 years...

7:43 AM
Can we just take a moment to thank Denis Ritchie and Ken Thompson ? Because from Unix, to Minix, to Linux, and eventually to Ubuntu, it was from them that everything started
2

Hmm. My first was some version of Mandrake. No idea which.

I think the one that got me hooked was suse 10.1
I remember this cause it had a broken... wait for it... package manager ;p

Heh. Yeah, SuSe was my next one.

I think I've been running ubuntu on and off since 6.04

My first linux was trusty

7:51 AM
I had RH and then, when it came out, Fedora at work. At home I switched to Ubuntu at some point in the early aughts. 2004 maybe? Then Mint, then LMDE, then Arch.

I tried out newest openSUSE a few months ago. Didn't really like the EULA agreement and difficulty with installation , so after a while I nuked it
Fedora 21's network manager just died for no reason on me, and i couldn't get it back to work , so got rid of it. Mint also kernel-panic'ed on me , so got rid of those two

I run f24 on my main linux box at home.
kinda switched cause my last job was centos 6 and I wanted a RHalike to get used to

By far , I like the most Ubuntu. Next is Deepin , because it's just beautiful. Have respect for CentOS for the stability. That's like my top 3

well, these days as long as it runs kde/lxde/xfce I'm fine. I have one application at home that needs a gui (qbitorrent) and that's cause I use its rss feed feature a lot

I came to love Unity after a while. At first I was like, "Boy , Unity is resource heavy". Now that I have SSD and 8 GB of RAM it runs perfectly smooth. Besides, I just love writing scripts for it

7:58 AM
I kinda like the "taskbar at the bottom, button on the left" layout

It's one of the classic layouts. Probably also more natural.

@Serg Aww, come on, you know better than to equate the distro with the DE. That's like saying that one book is better than another because it has a micer cover.

@terdon Yes, I know that. It's just one of several other points that Deepin wins me over to have 2nd top place in my book, although it was the very first one that made impression.

What else does it have apart from the DE? I tried the DE briefly, it's absolutely gorgeous but doesn't support "focus follows mouse" and that's a total deal breaker for me.
Actually, wasn't I the one who told you about it?
Ah, no I wasn't.

No, I don't think so. I had a period where I just discovered virtualbox, and started downloading bunch of distros
1) It comes with zsh by default , that's one. I'm no zsh user, but i can recognize that as a good point. 2) It's fairly easy to use for n00bs. 3) It has it's own software center. 4) Runs fairly smooth in VM ( although haven't tried on actual hardware ) 5) It uses apt-get and dpkg

8:15 AM
night

8:30 AM
@JourneymanGeek i do that on my router :-) no gui needed for torrents and the webversion I can use remotely

8:43 AM
@Rinzwind oh and a RSS feed feature ._.

user136984
9:01 AM
Is it just me or does this answer feel a little weird?

@Seth I think that bug with "According" and "Wikipedia" only shows up on that one specific question O_o I am . . .confuz'd nau . . .

user136984
9:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek: Are you around?

user136984
Or any mods for that matter?

user136984
I need a private word with one of you.

ok, I'm back
can anyone walk me through expanding my root partition online on a debian LVM with a separate home partition?
posts online all seem to have very different things than mine
so, I deleted so much stuff from my debian install that I might as well just scratch everything and start with a new install, where I pick the sizes of partitions manually

9:44 AM
@ParanoidPanda What's up?

user136984
@terdon: That is a matter I would prefer to discuss in private.

@ParanoidPanda Hang on

@ParanoidPanda now I am, tho, I'm not a local mod

user136984
@JourneymanGeek: It's fine, it's been dealt with, sort of.

10:01 AM
noticed another weird thing: instead of a file growing, it now seems like space just doesn't want to be used
output of df:
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/dm-1                     9480420 9222888         0 100% /
right after clearing ~80M
what could cause that?

10:16 AM
and great, now can't find a non-free+mate testing iso that isn't live

Q: How to build my code to run on a linux system without vdso support

prabhuI have a small C++ program which I am compiling on a ubuntu machine. The program runs fine on the same machine, but when I copy and try to run on a different linux system it printed ./prog1 : No such file or directory. Further probing I realized the VDSO (linux-vdso.so.1) support is not enabl...

@Zanna I didn't mean it that way. :(

10:36 AM

lol

i guess nobody uses nametags with address, eh?

user136984
:D

11:19 AM
the webupd8 guy opened an issue in my launcher-list-indicator repo . I got some fixin' to do , oh yeah >:)

@JourneymanGeek I think I use FlexGet on my router for that. It picks anything up for me from tokyotosho from horriblesubs and in 1080 :D

lol
I've used some pretty gnarly regex in the past

@dino awww no I didn't think anything bad <3

@JourneymanGeek I once had someone run out of the room cuz of a regex

11:36 AM
Anybody wanna help me test the Unity indicator ?
I need to check if issue report is reproducible

@Zanna <3
@Rinzwind Are you sure it was because of a regex? o.O

Aand just like that, the issue is closed. The guy wasn't using the latest commit :D

12:12 PM
so, I deleted /usr/share/locale
can I get it back in any way?
ok, managed, thanks anyway

@dino oh yes. He wanted me to show him how to delete some stuff in a text file so I used a regex for it.

12:47 PM
@Rinzwind you should have showed them vim. They'd run out screaming "What kind of Black Magic is this? "

rofl

@Seth I know. I'm hoping it'll be good

user136984
Does anybody know anything about making Backtraces?

user136984
I am going to be doing it with the program gdb, can I get it to insert timestamps every so often into the log file so that I can keep track of things?

1:17 PM
hello guys

Q: Switching back to ubuntu from kali (katoolin)

dnit13I was trying to install kali tools with the help of this repo . When I started installing package it showed some unmet dependencies , so in order to resolve this I did sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade and saw some kali packages being installed. when I restarted my system in the mornin...

ew I hate kali
stuff simply doesnt work

Kali is Ubuntu

no it is not! it is Debian

@Zacharee1 lel

1:40 PM
@Zacharee1 where did you get that idea?

probably people saying it was combined with the excess Kali questions here

not sure why but Kali is Debian

read that again

sorry I bonked
meant has nothing to do with Ubuntu

heh if Ubuntu is a child of Debian and Kali is a child of Debian then they are sisters, not unrelated :P
3

haha

why does it have an upvote?

idk
the q or a?
because the a doesn't

mysterious upvotes

the a did when I looked

1:47 PM
when did u look?

@Zanna nothing now...

the answer aught to be a comment
I dont have enough rep to downvote

hey, he listened!

It ought and it is.

I recommend someone downvote the answer

1:48 PM
@terdon oh

oh.. he moved it
ok

@Zacharee1 that seems pretty fast to me askubuntu.com/questions/815938/my-boot-time-is-almost-1-minute my toaster is vastly inferior

terdon moved it with his magic powers
haha is that another one or yesterday's?

yesterday's

@zana oh lol ok

1:52 PM
lmao
looks like we have a terdon fanclub

haha

@edwinksl he just doesn't want to get banned for ignoring him yesterday
You know what bothers me about questions that ask how to install Ubuntu?
Searching "How do I install Ubuntu?" brings back an exact match
and most people who don't know how to search, search exactly that

why do I need 150 rep to downvote? darn

Q: How to install Ubuntu onto Acer Aspire V5-122P Laptop

A. HirschI just received the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS USB stick. I wish to install Ubuntu onto an Aspire V5-122P currently running windows 10. What would be the step by step method to accomplish installation?

@Zacharee1 you burn ubuntu on a dvd. throw the acer out of the window and the dvd after it
it'll auto-install

1:55 PM
@Rinzwind lol

@Zacharee1 Just to avoid misunderstandings: I would never take any action whatsoever against a user just because they dislike me or ignore me. On the one hand, it's generally not a good idea to put mods on ignore since they might need to tell you something important. On the other hand, we have other ways of contacting users so if I piss someone off, they're welcome to ignore me.

^_^

@terdon edit a :p in if you want :p

@Zacharee1 Nah, I know you were joking. I just took the opportunity to put that out there.

yeah

1:57 PM
@Rinzwind WOW!!! that's the exact model I had!
Darn I cant comment
why do I need 50 rep to comment?

user136984
@JamesTobin: To prevent spammers.

but 50!!!!!!!!
that's a lot

user136984
And people who have no idea how to use the comments section.

we want our spammers to be seen

user136984
Trust me, 50 is not a lot.

1:59 PM
for you lol
I only have 21

@JamesTobin if it was 10 or 20, it would be easy to bypass, since there are so many vote trolls who just upvote anything they see

user136984
I got to 1k in the first 2 weeks of joining, it's really easy to get rep.

@paranoid WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW DO YOU DO THAT???

user136984
You just ask good questions and provide good answers.

@JamesTobin all you need to do is write 3 more answers that get at least one upvote each
that ain't hard

2:00 PM
half my questions are perfectly legitimate and they are completey ignored never answered
one of mine was upvoted but never answered

@JamesTobin I'm pretty sure I did that too. I was so eager to get rep, that I did around 15 minutes of research to see if I could find the answer for every question I saw

@Zacharee1 how many points do I get for one upvoted answer?

10

and 5 for questions
and two for accepting answers to your questions

2:02 PM
then I need like 150 to do a simple darned downvote

125
that's to prevent harmful vote trolls

yeah

user136984
As well as to stop people who get the association bonus of 100 from being able to immediately downvote on subjects they may have no idea about. Or have yet to prove they know anything about.

what's this association bonus?

why do you wanna downvote so bad?

2:04 PM
@JamesTobin if you have like 500 rep or something on one site and you join another on SE you get 100 rep on the site you join

user136984
@JamesTobin: When you get to 200 (I think it was) all SE sites you are on get a bonus 100 points, so do any new sites you join.

user136984
@Zacharee1: I thought it was 200...

@ParanoidPanda idk

user136984
I will have to check this, it's been a while.

200

2:05 PM
@JamesTobin this sort of thing doesn't make people want to answer:
y is no one answering >:C — James Tobin Jul 23 at 19:47
I have asked this over a week ago no answer. are you kidding? — James Tobin Jul 31 at 6:09

why?

@Zacharee1 lel we are no customer service though; nobody is obliged to answer the question

Because it's annoying
it makes you seem impatient

@JamesTobin 'Cause it comes across as pushy.

@edwinksl Exactly

2:06 PM
Especially if you say things like are you kidding.

those were 2 seperate posts
*separate

@JamesTobin as is indicated there, by the two separate time stamps, but it's still annoying

sure, but that is also irrelevant to what we are saying

Q: Cannot start X servers on different display tabs

Jaw.shI'm very new to customizing my Desktop with Ubuntu, but I'm trying to get some video games to work. I'm using 16.04 with Nvidia and after a lot of headaches with frame rates and not being able to fullscreen programs without them crashing, I took a risk and uninstalled the Unity DM and switched t...

2:08 PM
You do have creative titles, but we like getting details
5/8 questions answered? That's not bad

on most forums it is 100%

@JamesTobin pray tell what forums you are visiting

I've been to a lot

100% is a lie

@JamesTobin answers aren't the same as responses

2:10 PM
i too have been to many forums

this isn't a forum anyway ;)
2

on forums, people can reply saying "I'm getting this too. bump"

I am moderator on Chalet OS forums. Have also visited Fedora forums, Linux Mint forums, Linux Lite forums, ZorinOS forums, and many more

here, we delete that stuff

@Zacharee1 :|

2:10 PM
On forums, comments, questions and clarification are all responses
here, they're just comments
and I only have 4/9 of my questions answered, so you're doing better than me

@Zacharee1 4 of 9 is not good
thats under 50%

check Panda's 513+ questions
you'll probably see something similar
@JamesTobin however, mine have all gotten responses
which are what I think you are calling "answers" on forums

nope
I am talking about real answers
neat, I just got 5 extra points from someone

So this is going to come across as slightly stalker-ish, but
your post here on the Chalet OS forum doesn't have a reply chaletos.4rumer.com/t256-screen-locker-for-chalet-os

that's true
that was a long time ago
now since I'm mod I am going to grab your ip! (jk I won't)

2:21 PM
100% is a strong statement. you might have to refrain from saying that unless you are 100% sure.
3

ok
99% then

@edwinksl :p
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD no, 50% for you. You have 4 threads started by you and two have replies
at least in Help and Support
but you sure do a lot of replying

@Zanna askubuntu.com/questions/802649/… I personally always use sudo bash

Has anyone here read Inherit the Wind?

@Zacharee1 negative

2:28 PM
@JamesTobin Why? Why not sudo -i?

@terdon why not sudo bash? if it is Debian or Redhat or Fedora or Suse I use su
or su -

For one thing, 'cause it's harder to type :) As long as your $SHELL is set to bash, sudo -i is sudo bash.

@terdon I use fish

@Zacharee1 Then sudo -i is the same as sudo fish.

@terdon you're no fun
:p

2:30 PM
:)

:) lol
one thing I liked about Kali Linux was there was no root account lockdown. I was root, had no normal uac

ewww
@JamesTobin no you don't

Does any other distro apart from Ubuntu disable the root password by default?

that you're root by default is one of the terrible things about kali

y not?

2:34 PM
@terdon most of them give you the option

@JourneymanGeek Wait, the default user is root?
Eeeek!

@terdon I believe this is the case yes.
There's a vague reason for it - many tools in kali need root

@JourneymanGeek I guess that might be a good thing. Get all the script kiddies to destroy their machines.

@JourneymanGeek Sure, and the 5% or so of Kali users who actually know what they're doing would need that.

2:36 PM

A: Why don't you use root for browsing the internet

AibobotKali linux is not meant as a general purpose OS. Its meant to be a standardised platform for deploying specific scripts to do various tasks. Its one of these Very good at what it does. Just not what you need when you want to go grocery shopping. I'm told it runs as root by default which i...

(disclaimer - that's my sock)

^ ha
/me runs sudo firefox

@JourneymanGeek Ah, I was about to ask why you hadn't upvoted a post you consider good enough to link to :)

now you're just trolling..

me?

@terdon most of the posts by aibobot is me ranting at kali users ;)

@JamesTobin principle of least priviledge. Aka, you don't give private messup the nuclear button.

@JourneymanGeek can you please rant at the kali posts on AU :P

@journeyman I want to be the man in charge though

@JourneymanGeek Heh, at least one user on U&L meticulously retags all Kali questions with just so he can ignore them.

heh

2:39 PM
(the joke behind aibobot is I figure if I learn to code, and like it I'd do a bot. I occationally pull her out for testing the root access bot as a non mod/ro, and checking out things as a low rep user on SU)

I'm a bit lost

@JamesTobin U&L = Unix & Linux SU = Super User

then I realised I wanted to rant at people without the mod hat ;p
root access = SU main chat room

Oh, and sock = sock puppet

2:43 PM
"I have installed Kali Linux, and now I am looking for 'my backside', but although I have a map and a torch, I cannot seem to locate it, TIA"

I found @JourneymanGeek

@Zanna Heh, yeah, that about sums it up.

cute

lo
*lol

@Zanna wat

2:43 PM
@Zanna i roflmaoed

@Zacharee1 She's talking about people who can't find their asses with a map and a flashlight.

guess I'm just not feeling well enough to get its humor
I'm really not feeling well I just noticed

aww :(

Q: How to trace xkbmap changes?

cevingI am running Fluxbox on an Ubuntu (14.04.5) NoMachine server. I have a very simple startup file: fluxbox="$HOME/.fluxbox" stderr="$fluxbox/stderr" (umask 077; > "$stderr") exec 2> "$stderr" setxkbmap de nodeadkeys exec ssh-agent fluxbox -verbose -log "$fluxbox/log" My problem is, that some pro...

2:46 PM
sorry to hear :(

I think it was in Crocodile Dundee... thanks for translating @terdon

@Zanna Pretty sure it's from all sorts of places. Well, in various incarnations, anyway.

I thought so

cant believe how many offtopic posts I see here

2:48 PM
@Zanna you need a trained smurf

@Zacharee1 aibobot actually...

@JourneymanGeek which is you

@JamesTobin You can't do it any more ;p
@Zacharee1 clearly I'm a dog ;p

@JourneymanGeek You can, note the /* as opposed to /.

2:50 PM
@terdon they haven't fixed that one yet?

lol

@Zacharee1 And nor should they. It's harder to type as a typo and I want some way of being able to do it. Without needing --no-preserve-root.

@terdon erf
@Zacharee1 that's a bernese ;p

root@power:/$rm -r

@JourneymanGeek A sauce puppet?

2:52 PM
hi @Anwar

@dino hi :)

hey :)

@JamesTobin I sometimes experienced same problem. but now forgot how i fixed it :)
NAA ?

@anwar which one?

2:54 PM
@Anwar uh yeah

@terdon I think you're confusing it with something else ;p

@JamesTobin I was talking about your wallpaper question

@JourneymanGeek Bernese, béarnaise, shmernese.

@anwar oh sweet ok
I just noticed it
that there were suddenly a bunch of comments lol

it was not new for me. but need to reproduce now to find a solution

2:56 PM
thank you :)

mostly happens when I install lots of DEs

I only have one DE
I do recall installing GNOME once but uninstalled it because that tracker-miner-fs process hogs resources

@JamesTobin now I'm wondering if KDE still does the bomb symbol and red background as root

heh

@JamesTobin aha! that might be causing it. you tried creating a new user and experiment with it?

2:58 PM
Anyways I do remember I accidentally used GDM instead of LightDM and I crapped things up but then I ran "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm" and fixed it
@anwar no I haven't

@edwinksl You should have given a Gold Medal for this. 100% agree with you ;)
@JamesTobin do please

@JamesTobin please edit your question and add the answers to the comments there. Comments can be deleted without warning and are easy to miss and hard to read. Ideally, all information should be in the body of the question itself.

processing, please wait

@edwinksl are you certain with an appropriate level of certainty? ;p

@JourneymanGeek 100% sure :D

3:04 PM
@anwar ok, I tried and the function works on the other account

That's what i expecting. Gnome shell left some configuration on your Unity :)

dang
Im tempted to put Chalet OS on there :|
just wish chalet os worked better with touch

3:19 PM
@JamesTobin you have to go to system settings right?
@JamesTobin are you there?

3:35 PM
Just found that right click -> Set as wallpaper copies the image to ~/Pictures/Wallpapers folder. That's weird. The the weirdest part of it is, if there were already that picture, it will ask to replace!!

@RobotHumans i haven't seen anything from you come through.
