I think it is normal for sibling to have similar interests. While different, I love computers because of my father.

Anonymous
If anything, be proud that you have a sister interested in computers. :D

as i said, all hail the nerd girls :) im happy for each one of them, they are a rare and nice species
:)

Anonymous
exactly!

Anonymous
You have nothing to worry about, Henry. If you two are different grade levels, or even at different schools, no one will realizes you are siblings.

If anything be proud you know anyone interested in computers. The "local tech repair guy" was all "I fixed a puter. Put a new power supply in it." And I realized I was treading in the shallow end here.

12:04 AM
and herny if she gets better than you dont worry be happy to have a sister who is able to hack the heck out of each one who gives you trouble :)) see it this way

I don't get the tech support questions, thankfully. I make it clear I know little hardware, and am about software. (Not even internet, but programs really.).

but ok im coming out of a generation where not even my my gender was much interested in computers

Anonymous
I COULD pick up hardware, etc, but I am not interested.

Anonymous
@HenryWHHack you both may like computers, but I am sure you have different specialty interests -- security, theory, algorithms, databases, sys admin, devops, just programming, game design, etc etc etc etc

Anonymous
You will both teach each other things, and learn from each other!

12:07 AM
@onebree yeah. on the tech support thing, the only bit that irritates me sometimes is "solve this problem over the phone". no. put it on my desk. i'll solve it when you put it here. but somehow, people don't want to do that mostly. when they do, it gets fixed.

Anonymous
@RobotHumans I hate when someone says "no, tell me and I'll do it." -- No person, I can't TELL you because I need the mouse to magically know where everything is.

and there my new found love for linux comes in, there you could tell someone ok do a terminal input this this and this, not explaining which con to pic which dialog to find etc

@onebree Here's my case in point: I can't get it to boot. Try to troubleshoot it over the phone. Get them booting from optical for a reinstall. Still doesn't boot. My diagnosis, bad optical drive. They bring it to my desk, well shit. They have two optical drives. How did they not tell me that.

Anonymous
I also don't like when people give me unwarranted tech advice. I called VZW last month because my phone was not dialing out. In the end, I figured it was a weird fluke dead spot. But the rep told me to turn on 4G all the time, turn on HD voice/video, and to save battery use "battery saver"

Anonymous
@Videonauth yup, you either type the command correctly or not. But with GUIs, there are different layouts, views, categories....

12:10 AM
sounds like someone who desperatly needed a job reading down a list he picked up from other people
that what most callcenter tech reps are, at least here in germany

Anonymous
@Videonauth Thing was, I was able to dial out fine without the extra things, or even 4G on. 4G is really for accessing the web when you don't have wifi anyway.

low paid people who have to do this job to have a income

The worst part was I did what he suggested, and my screen went dark with a red bar on top. I told him and he said "I have a droid by samsung. It doesn't do that to me. And I see you have a droid by motorola. My last motorola didn't have the feature."

With programming, I used to ask a lot, very frequently, even if I could just google the answer. But through my apprenticeship, I am learning how to actually research things.

I even have a few stickies on my wall of troubleshooting steps, in bright yellow so I don't forget

Q: What is the best way to gain back my question privileges.

TheChosenOne99For reasons I will not say (let's just say that I made some mistakes), the askubuntu system took away my right to ask questions on the website. I have read that once I have a positive effect on the website, I could be able to ask questions again. Currently, I can reply to questions and provide an...

@AskUbuntuMeta I mean, by asking this, he is hoping even just a tibny bit for the ban to be lifted

12:23 AM
Well i never had that problem yet :) and i have not much insight how the ban system works and i doubt even the mods have much more insight into the details :)

Anonymous
So how are you today @Videonauth

fine so far :)
begun yesterday to have a look into python

Anonymous
Cool! Are you reading a book or just tinkering?

books are for the weak :D

Last week and this week, I've spent a few work days reading the Well Grounded Rubyist

I have the force of google with me

Anonymous
I've worked with Ruby since Oct 2014, but I am learning SO MUCH from this book

yeah i hade a similar experience with c++
but to be honest there as well s many crappy books out there where you feel sad to have ever bought them

Anonymous
I've only bought books that others have recommended. My mentor recommended WGR and it is paying off a lot

my goal right now taking an application i made in c++ OpenGL and convert it into python, thats my way to find my way around into a new language

Anonymous
12:31 AM
Are you doing direct translation, or creating the same features but the python way?

hi world

well its a OpenGl representation of the game of life

hello @SQuirel!!

Anonymous
how are you this evening?

good

12:31 AM
now doing it in phyton

I upgraded to xubuntu 16.04 :D

the algorythms should be neraly same, just different syntax

Anonymous
@SQuirel Awesome!!! I run that on my partition

Anonymous
Which I really need to get up to speed for so I can work on it, and not a VM

Looks alot better than lxde :D

Anonymous
12:33 AM
xfce is a step above lxde in desktop things

I wish you could use askubuntu chat in the terminal... :(

Anonymous
I think I will spend tomorrow doing HW (4 hours?) and getting my partition up to speed.

Anonymous
@SQuirel I wish it had desktop notifications if/when I am mentioned. Then I'd be set.

Wouldn't it be cool if there was a program that works as a web browser and a terminal all in one?

Anonymous
Okay, it's been short, but I am going to watch some netflix now, and maybe even read.

emacs?

@SQuirel check out vimperator and links browser.

emacs does what you want and more

I've never used emacs. I use viim too

I have not used it either. I don't know much vim,. but am eager to learn it when I put my time/mind into it

For example, with :set spell, the command z= brings up a list of words to autocorrect that one wrong word. And zg adds that word to the dictionary

Harder to use doesn't mean better...

I wouldn't say it's hard. The basic setup is all you need, and it includes a couple things you can comment back in.

12:43 AM
Does anyone here use irssi?

OHHHHH NOOOOOO ...... not this discussion again lol

I don't use hjlifksdhfu for navigation, just my arrow keys, page up/down, and mouse to scroll.

My phone finally got Marshmallow (I think ahead of ATT for once)
I have WiFi calling :DD
I just have to flash the modem, since I'm on CyanogenMod

How dangerous is flashing a rom on a phone?

@Zacharee1 how are you, you have been really silent last days :)

12:44 AM
@SQuirel Less dangerous than juggling chainsaws

@Videonauth exams :p

@RobotHumans it depends on the phone

Anonymous
@Zacharee1 I am so jealous. CHeck out this thread I have on reddit => reddit.com/r/droidturbo/comments/4jtaoa/…

well don't look at my profile, better

12:45 AM
@Zacharee1 It should be no problem then. I juggle chainsaws on a regular basis

@Videonauth well sh*t
@SQuirel good, then you know the risks of flashing to a Samsung phone

But I don't have a samsung phone

@onebree and that's not even a major flagship
Mine is and look how long it took
@Google you really need to do that carrier shaming thing

Anonymous
@Zacharee1 it was THE verizon flagship when it came out, because it was vzw exclusive

But no longer

12:47 AM
ok guys ---> askubuntu.com/questions/779696/… here im running onto a wall right now lol

The Note 4 is still a very popular phone (I mean, look at the price)
Everyone likes it because it is powerful

read the question carefully and then my answer ;)
and then read his comment again
i can ping all inside my own network like 192.168.0.1 and 8.8.8.8 but cant ping any other websites
proof of concept pinging microsoft.com (alone for that he should be banned from AU ;) )

I don't think he understands that most places he might try to ping block those requests

that'll teach me to look away from my monitor. i just flew my ship in to a sun

No, those are two left arms.
@StefanoPalazzo Hey! How's it going?

@NathanOsman Doesn't let me read with AdBlock, not going to read
But from what I could read before it blocked me seemed pretty scary
@NathanOsman oh o_O

This wireless adapter is incredibly lousy.
I can't wait until I get the new one.
I knew I shouldn't have trusted something without an actual antenna.

@Videonauth Good question. If you're willing to invest some money, I highly recommend Sublime Text with the Anaconda plugin. If not, the next best option is Komodo Edit.
Both work beautifully with Python.

well eric is not bad tho but misses snippets

great
I flashed the MM modem and now I can't unlock my phone
Hopefully flashing down to LL will help

you can flap in the sides i only opened them to show
has qt designer coming with it and so on

1:04 AM
@RobotHumans cool thanks for the heads up, I remember buying the new bioshock - beautiful game, couldn't play 10 min of it, wondering if the new toomraider is good, I've heard it came out for Linux should be third person

@Mateo the Tomb Raider 2013 was already for Linux and runs very smoothly on my machine here

Just started getting into ShootMania. Awesome game, sadly it is Windows-only.

Cool
I really liked the witcher 2 - sadly I think the darker side of the community made sure they didn't do 3 for linux as well, even steam repetly advertised...

eh, i have that htpc for that

I might eventually try out the graphics passthrough, but I really don't want a windows box or dual boot

1:11 AM
@Mateo Did I tell you I managed to get PCI pass-through working on this machine with XenServer?

@Mateo as far i have read it will be released for steam os, but when i wasn't able to find out now in the quick

Let's try this flash again
pls werk
nope

1:26 AM

well it'll work or it won't

it's not bricked :p

@Videonauth Thank you for the advice. :)

@HenryWHHack you're very welcome always :)

@Zacharee1 then stop crying about it not working.

mhmmmmm reviewing first posts, what to do with this one? askubuntu.com/a/781111/522934

@RobotHumans I wantz me wifi calling
@Videonauth I say comment as an answer, but others will have a different opinion. It seems pretty borderline

Hi

Hello! :)

Question: in English when: "I can add something useful to Ian and Eliah's answer" shouldn't this be "I can add something useful to Ian and Eliahs answer" ?
^^^^ @Zacharee1

1:51 AM
unless there are two eliahs no.

O.k. just don't want to make a edit called "corrected typos" and add a new flaw in.

ah. Right. I remember you mentioned that earlier.

@Seth can you stop this one please as it is a double post of the other question I just answered. askubuntu.com/q/781138/522934

@TheBrownOne Here you go ... hands over a big mug of coffee

ugh. Firefox uses so much CPU.

huh ?
how much it uses on your system ? maybe a faulty add-on ?

Hi

Hello. :)

@Seth for me it only uses 0.3-3%

3:35 AM
@Videonauth 6-13
I've only got privacy badger, HTTPS everywhere and firebug.

oof then you either have a ton of tabs open with moving content unstopped

although I have a lot of tabs.
but no moving content..

i have a ton of add ons actually
I use those add ons already since years and never been on a bad side with them
Anyone an idea how to exclude only one particular cron-job to be excluded from syslog logging?

4:11 AM
Is AWS experiencing problems?
I can't download large files from my EC2 instance.
The connections are timing out.
This is happening from two different machines...

are the files private? shall I test? have you tried a traceroute?

Tried with Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
^--- that's the file

i got this instant
not even had time to do a blink of my eye

Yeah, I got it instantly using my server in Dallas as well.
But as soon as I slow it down artificially, it gets stuck.

try a traceroute from your home machine

4:19 AM
I'm using IIS to host the files... maybe there's a setting I need to change.

or something on the route is simply malfunctioning

But it's happening from the Dallas server as well.
So it can't be local to me.
It must be a problem with EC2 or the webserver I'm running.
@Videonauth what happens if you run this?
That forces the download at 32 KB/s.

yep
takes ages :p

Does it get stuck though?

yep

4:22 AM
I'm not talking about it running slowly but literally stopping partway through.
So it isn't me going crazy then :D

stopping at exactly 1 M
or 7%

Something super weird is going on...
Might have to ask over on Server Fault.

maybe because its an .exe file ;) and we finally have invented a way fro protecting us from evil :P

wget isn't protected in any way :P
Same thing from my server in SF.
Bizarre.
Time to take a peek at the server.

funny thing is, FF didnt even move it to my downloads directory, it kept it stuck in /tmp/mozilla_michael0/

Yes.

all with a ping over 100 are on US soil
it takes exactly 120 ms to pinctrace to US
technical limitation

@edity the signal goes through a thousands of miles long under water cable taking one way 60 ms and again 60 ms for the result comming back

Yeah, but since you're limiting the speed, it likely downloads the same amount of the file in the same amount of time.

Interesting. It doesn't stall when downloading at a slow speed from another account on the server.
So maybe it is AWS after all.
But that makes no sense.

Ahmed Abu rukaiahI cannot access to my computer using ubuntu after upgrading to 15.10 and if i access to recovery mode it need from me to login and ttry shown in display boot

can we just take a minute
