So well now i think i have a problem :) my Kali Linux VM wont run hehehe
but i like the speed already

Woah look at this excellent question: stackoverflow.com/questions/37845534/…

brb downvoting

@JourneymanGeek ??

clickbaiting your own posts on chats -> not cool
(I didn't actually downvote that)

Desperate times desperate measures :p

3:10 PM
yea nope.

@cl-netbox well if im now going to uninstall dkms on my VM what would i have to install to make it behave like in VBox

Only post in this room. Don't have an account on Ask Ubuntu. Don't spam please.

@Videonauth you need to have dkms installed on host ... that is important

ok
kk well i still get a ton of error messages of of the virtualbox guest additionals mhmm
and another thing is how do i get the same functionality i.e. screensize

@Videonauth screen size ? please try out everything slowly - take your time - switching to fullscreen and back is easy in virt-manager ... and don't compare every single feature ... the guest additions errors might come from an "unproper" install ... I suggest to drop vbox completely ... this is what I did ! :)

3:22 PM
well an unclean install might be i have this VM already a while
i normaly start it headless ;) and ssh in so if im going to use qemu i have to find out how :D

@Videonauth yes ... and when you don't remove old additions and install new additions after a new vbox release, errors are normal ! :)

3:43 PM
rolling ?

yep

@Videonauth rolling or breaking ? hahaha :)

Its one of the few systems where rolling-release makes sense
no it works still
just kali is nothing for your day to day work

@Videonauth Few? Where does a rolling release not make sense?

it's too sensitive to changes
well ubuntu has not adopted rolling releases for a reason i guess ;)

3:52 PM
Basically because it's too hard what with the rather convoluted Debian packaging system.

well kali is debian based too

Plus, since it's based on Debian, they need to freeze it every now and then to get a release out. These aren't technical reasons why rolling releases don't make sense though.
The only technical one I can think of is to be able to have releases. Personally, I prefer the rolling model, but that can be a pain if you need complete stability (servers etc). Even then, though, there are ways around that.
Point being, there is nothing inherent in the release model that makes it more sensible than the rolling model. Not that I know of, anyway.

and it puts more strain on the maintainers to keep up with upstream

Yes. They each have their + and -
From a user perspective, I far prefer rolling. Having to reinstall/update the system every few months was really annoying.

kali for sure is known to not be able to add ppas ;) and that for a reason

3:56 PM
I haven't used a non-rolling distro in, dunno, 7 years?
@Videonauth Well, ppas are an Ubuntu thing, really.
Nothing to do with rolling vs non-rolling

yep or repos outside from the main pool i mean

Only Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based systems use ppas AFAIK

kali does not like outside installs really

Oh?

i can tell i broke a few installations of it already

3:57 PM
I can't have my own Kali repo?

you could have a mirror repo
what i want to say is when you miss software xy and it isnt in there it is really hard to get it installed, even when you compile it you most likely break something in the process
but ok kali is a very special user case

4:10 PM
@terdon which other rolling releases are there actually and which of em is good ?

@terdon which is a shame really.

Can someone test out this page and tell me how quickly it loads?

6 seconds and 56 hundred

that's a lot faster than before
considering before was somewhere around infinity :p

indeed yesterday it took more than 20 seconds ;)

4:14 PM
earlier today it just wasn't loading. Something's up with the DSL upload speed.

@Seth That it is. ppas are pretty cool
@Videonauth Well, good is a matter of opinion. Many distros are rolling. Off the top of my head, Arch, LMDE, Kali and I think Gentoo and Slackware but I'd have to check.

user136984
Where am I in terms of the place in the primaries does anyone know?

Why does PHP look so blegh?
@ParanoidPanda 10th still

user136984
And by the way, where exactly do you get that calculating tool from?

I'll link you to the modified version for AU
you need greasemonkey or tampermonkey

4:18 PM

user136984
@Zacharee1: Well, I'll be happy as long as I don't move down before the actual elections begin. :D

I really haave no clue why she got so many down-votes

neither do I

user136984
Have you guys seen my answers to the questionnaire by the way? Because I posted it yesterday but I don't think anyone has actually noticed... :D

4:19 PM
@ParanoidPanda do we care?
>:D

user136984
@Zacharee1: Well, I should hope that it would allow you to make an informed decision in the actual election, for all the candidates that is. So to read all the answers from all the people would be good.

yeah
Is Crouton OT?

link?

user136984
Also, if I spent all that time on it I don't want to feel that that time was completely wasted... :D

user136984
4:21 PM
@Zacharee1: Is that some sort of pie?

user136984
Savoury pie.

user136984
I'm sure there's something that sounds like that...

You don't know what croutons are?

hard to say tho

I thought there was a definitive ruling on Crouton or something
@seth? ^

4:25 PM
@Zacharee1 Neither do I. For me they're bits of toasted bread that go great with soups.

lol

@terdon yes

So, what is it? Google suggests it's some sort of software for chromebooks

@terdon I prefer them on salad. :P

It's a way to install ubuntu on chrome os

4:28 PM
> Crouton: Crouton actually uses a “chroot” environment to run both Chrome OS and Ubuntu at the same time. Ubuntu runs alongside Chrome OS, so you can switch between Chrome OS and your standard Linux desktop environment with a keyboard shortcut. This gives you the ability to take advantage of both environments without any rebooting needed. Crouton allows you to use Chrome OS while having a standard Linux environment with all its command-line tools and desktop applications a few keystrokes away.
I see.

@ParanoidPanda I'm gonna check it now ... good evening ! :)

4:44 PM
@ParanoidPanda If you want to feel like you wasted your time, check the votes on your answer to the mod questionnaire. Nobody reads those things.

@ParanoidPanda It shows that you really did think about what you are going to do in case that you will be elected ... a little suggestion : maybe shorten it a bit ? :)

5:00 PM
@terdon or no one votes on them.
that can't exist for any good purpose --^

Hi all, looking for help on my stats project. Lab 1 got bounced back again because my data and sample choice is not best for the assignment.

Anonymous
I want to do a sample set that involves programming, maybe github repos or issues. Doing CLOSED Rails issues days opened, num comments, and labels attached is not the best for this class.

Anonymous
IDK what other sites or services I can query the API of. I need 2 numeric variables, and 1 nonnumeric. But there has to be some trend in the sample (which does not make sense, but whatever)

Tim
I do stats
They wan't you to find a sample whics shows a thing before you take the sample :P

Anonymous
Yes. My first sample was 40 (max as per assignment) rails issues (closed) showing days opened, num comments, and labels included.

Anonymous
Because my first data set had "many" issues with no labels attached, and for the ones with labels the prof so no clear dominant label, he asked me to try again

Anonymous
5:21 PM
So this time I did closed issues WITH labels. The main ones are activerecord, then actionpack, then other things. But I listed out all the "other" labels inthe column. He didn't like that, so wants me to do "activerecord, actionpack,other" as needed per each record

Tim
right

This is a 100-level course where most students are doing things you can easily find on wikipedia pages, like US Senators (years served, party, age) or atheletes (age, years played, etc)

@Seth O_O

@Seth Hope the free replacement comes soon.

@Tim back

@Seth I spotted a question that seems to attract LQ answers: askubuntu.com/q/759899/367990 - Shall I VTC as opinion-based or too broad or what would you recommend? These answers just popped up in the LQ review queue.

Tim
@Zacharee1 Scale your images before you send them

@Tim they're as small as they can be

Tim
You're sending 500KB that you don't need to

I need the images to be 353x326 or 1152x326

Tim
5:34 PM
You've not resized them in html?

I resized the images themselves.

Tim
oh cos it's using 100%
okay
Can you enable GZip compression?
That's 100KB

It's a lot of image stuff, so I ended up just hosting the images on the website @TheBrownOne is hosting for me
How do I do that?
Do you happen to know MySQL?

Tim
Nope, don't know mySQL

:/

Anonymous
@Tim rught what?

Tim
I was just thinking
not sure what to suggest
@Zacharee1 Also some of that JS needs to be minified

yeah
I'm not really looking for optimization yet
I just need it to load within a minute for now :p

hey all can anyone help with a question?

Tim
@Pablo Fire away
@Zacharee1 When you are, gtmetrix.com/reports/x-p-w.tk/OAzOmEJs is good, as is the google dev one

5:38 PM
IM using radeon driver but want to use amdgpu is it possible?

ok
@Pablo amdgpu-PRO?
or the open source one?

think is called amdgpu only but not sure
open source
yep

None of the Qs about that seem to be answered, but I'm pretty sure it depends on your hardware
ie you can't switch it

arg bad news
I have a kaveri chip mad
amd*

Alternatively @Oli what is your opinion about the question I linked a few minutes ago?

5:41 PM
anyone knows how to install amdgpu?

8 mins ago, by Byte Commander
@Seth I spotted a question that seems to attract LQ answers: http://askubuntu.com/q/759899/367990 - Shall I VTC as opinion-based or too broad or what would you recommend? These answers just popped up in the LQ review queue.

user136984
There is either a burglar on my roof or a very loud Wood Pigeon... :D

@Pablo Nope, I just have an ancient AMD card in one desktop and that runs on the open-source radeon driver...

@ByteCommander protect maybe?

Tim
Do burglars often go "coo coo"?

5:43 PM
ok

@jokerdino /me lost the ability to protect questions...
Need 763 more points again.
:-/

voting to close because you can't protect doesn't seem right

On the other hand, 3/4 of those answers were by people above 10 points.

^^

hey if you get baned by bad rep how many days until lifted I have more positive rep than bad

5:45 PM
And probably nearly every answer to that question would look like "I tried to use keyboard X and mouse Y together - it worked [not]"

> Has anybody tried it with both keyboard and mouse connected through BT?
the question looks like that
@Pablo permanent

Yes. That does not really meet our quality standards and is too broad/opinion-based IMHO.

permanent ban?
read the system check for bad vs good rept

@Pablo are you banned from asking questions? because thats something different

@Pablo yes, it's there to prevent people from asking poor quality questions over a period of time

5:48 PM
yes from questions
its temporal right?

it's permanent

not for period of time?

the period would last for a couple decades

ok I get the joke
its temporal

well, you can believe which one is convenient.
but quality bans on asking questions is automatic and lasts forever

5:50 PM
seriously?
read the notes says it evalutes bad vs good rep

I have more good rep

one possible way to maybe have your ban re-evaluated is if you can produce quality answers over a period of time

@Pablo Example: You could go back and make this question more clear, as well as your own answer to it more elaborate, and then submit this for being reopened (askubuntu.com/questions/784952/…)

Honestly, if you stopped deleting all your questions, you won't be in this mess

5:55 PM
O.k. the Tea-Rex sees again more than I do .D

@Pablo The ban does not "time out", it only lifts if it deems your contributions useful enough.
although now that I think about it, that might have changed.

How is the ALT+F2 prompt called in Unity btw?

run

That's not really a name, is it?

It's the run command window

6:01 PM
run command
It's not a unity specific thing @Byte
it's called run command

It should definitely get a proper name...
Anyway, thank you guys.

Why? Even the Windows equivalent feature is called Run.

Well... yesh...
Probably I was looking for "run dialogue" or something like that.
Don't care, forget it. ;)

@Pablo, I reopened one of your questions.

Quiz: Which movie I'm watching? Hint: "Hello Prof. Fawken, do you want to play a game?"

6:09 PM
I don't know. I am reading about Falkland war.

Prof. Falken?

@Videonauth Hey, I've just read that book a week ago or two! :)

yeah i love that movie
have seen it already countless times

@Pablo Looks like there was a change: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/322707/… So the ban lifts after 6 months, whereupon you get 1 chance to ask a good question. Obviously it is much easier to just make good contributions and get out early.

6:14 PM
The book does not really have that much in common with the movie though IIRC. Watched that years ago though.
@Videonauth Are you watching it on TV or DVD/online/...
?

I watching it from a digitized version I took from a VHS tape

user136984
Anyone else getting this with snapd by the way? :)

user136984

Q: How to see why "snapd.refresh.service" failed to start on startup?

Paranoid PandaAfter upgrading to snapd version 2.0.8 I have noticed that I get an error message about snapd.refresh.service failing to start on startup, the error tells me which command to run in order to see why it is failing, however the message disappears so quickly that I can't see what that command is. I...

The tape itself sits air-tight sealed in my basement
@ParanoidPanda yep having that too
root@NEXUS-ONE:/home/michael/packages/libwxgtk2.8# systemctl status snapd.refresh.service
● snapd.refresh.service
   Loaded: not-found (Reason: No such file or directory)
   Active: inactive (dead)

YESH
I got a MySQL/PHP login working

6:25 PM
@Videonauth Sigh... those memories...
;-)

:) yes yes
running gianna sisters from datasette :p

We still have a hi8 player somewhere. I guess it should still work.

that where the times

But the camera to record those bands broke, I think.

user136984
@Videonauth: Have you marked yourself as affected and added 'heat' to the upstream bug report?

user136984
6:27 PM
I linked it in my question just now.

Okay, guys, I've just done my 999th Low Quality review!

@ByteCommander whoo!

@ParanoidPanda since you not have linked it before no, but now i did
@ByteCommander I need 80 more, so i guess in 4 days im at that point

Steward badge, I'm coming!
Badgey, badgey, badgey...

Is it your first one?

6:34 PM
My first Steward? Yes, it is.

tsk tsk tsk ;)
and youre how long on the site ?
xD

But the system did not notice it yet. Still waiting for delivery...

Sorry, no real offense intended.

none taken :)

6:38 PM
Yay, there it is! I got the 217th one. askubuntu.com/help/badges/126/steward?userid=367990

271st

> Awarded 217 times

not two-hundred seventy-firth
oh
I think I'm dyslexic
or just really tired
ignore me

;-)
And my candidate score updated and jumped to 33/40 \o/

yep i upped my candidate score while on this election 2 points up
started with 19 ;)

6:41 PM
That Steward is not among my rarest badges though.
Fun fact: My rarest bronze badge is rarer than my rarest silver badge which is again rarer than my rarest gold badge!
:)

which one is it ? peer-pressure ? grins

:P
I'm one of only 19.

not bad i still have trouble keeping my 16.04 badge

My rarest silver badge is Sportsmanship (awarded 31 times).

6:45 PM
And my rarest gold badge is the Copy Editor (87 times)
@Videonauth Nice, you'll always be the first one to get that. :)

funny thing is i had this badge meanwhile awarded 5 times and lost it 4 times
:p
because poeple here tend to go around and remove version tag where they can

why is MySQL so confusing and why is PHP so annoying
just why

btw about the copy editor :) askubuntu.com/help/badges/49/copy-editor

Yah, yah... I know you grabbed that one too. :)

and im one of the unsung-heroes :p
awarded 99 times

6:52 PM
lol

@Videonauth Me too.

Q: Client route for OpenVPN Access Server

AaronI am running OpenVPN Access Server and I'd like to push a route to every client on connection that is the equivalent of: sudo ip route add 172.17.0.0/24 via 172.27.232.1 Where should I go to set this up (preferably in the OpenVPN AS Web UI)?

user136984
I just failed a review audit... I failed it because the community decided not to close a too broad question but I did... I've had to manually go to the question now to cast my close vote, but, seriously? It was way too broad...

6:57 PM
@par gasp

@Zacharee1 Make Your Stuff Questionably Lame with Pretty Horrible Programming

@ByteCommander I wouldn't use it if that was an option
@ByteCommander Why are there no alternatives though? Seriously

took me a while to find fitting words...
