9:01 PM
@ParanoidPanda It sounds very useful, but doesn't the update-manager daemon eventually alert you to the need for rebooting (even when you used apt)?

user136984
@chaskes: It does, but not immediately, only after a while, and it's through the GUI, once I run sudo apt-get dist-upgrade I just call it automatically through an alias, it is very useful for me to easily know immediately through Terminal.

user136984
And not have to wait for the update-manager to alert me through the GUI... It also doesn't give so much details about what needs the restart.

user136984
And if you are in the CLI, then that GUI program isn't going to help you much...

user136984
@Nathan: How did you exactly submit your application to Debian? Is there some documentation on that because I will now think about submitting mine if they want it?

I'd stick to a PPA unless you have the patience necessary to get something into Debian.
There is no documentation and it's a very complex multi-step process.

user136984
9:09 PM
Right, so, how did you find out how to do it?

(There are some pages that explain the process, but nothing like a "step 1, step 2, step 3" thing.)
@ParanoidPanda The first step is Debian packaging.
Do you have packaging for the application?

user136984
Well, I did package an application successfully a while ago and I think I remember where the documentation on Debian for that was so that shouldn't be too hard...

That's the first step.

user136984
And what comes after that?

It needs to pass Lintian (a packaging test tool) as well.
Lintain checks for common packaging mistakes.

user136984
9:10 PM
Yes, I think I remember that...

user136984
I remember passing it at least...

The next step is to file a special kind of bug called an ITP (intent to package).
You can do this with the reportbug Debian package.
I'm not sure if it works in Ubuntu. I did it from a Debian VM.
Beware that the tool attempts to send the emails directly.

user136984
Is there a way to instead do it through the interface of their site?

user136984
Because my VM situation isn't looking so good at the moment...

Well, there might be but the bug needs to follow a specific format.

9:13 PM
Wait, I thought this was bug ITP: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20460348

@ParanoidPanda here's one of mine as an example: bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=811564

@Mateo: Thanks for the information. I've tried it, seems to enable CSD sucessfully, but the header bars don't appear. I ask this because if I run gedit as root, it uses header bars.

@NathanOsman do you need an ITP for something you wrote yourself?

Yes.
You always need an ITP since the first entry in the changelog needs to be "Closes #xxxx" where xxxx is the bug number of the ITP.

user136984
@NathanOsman: So I see the format... But how do you actually get the package to them and then update it in the future?

9:21 PM
That comes later.

user136984
When is later?

After you file the ITP and add a changelog entry, you upload the package to mentors.debian.net

@Mateo and @/all the GUI gurus here: Screenshots attached below
http://i.stack.imgur.com/8uzvZ.png

With CSD

user136984
@Nathan: What does the changelog entry read for the first one?

http://i.stack.imgur.com/TJYoH.png

As root

9:23 PM
Example ---------^
You won't be able to upload to mentors without a GPG key that has been pushed to the Debian keyserver (IIRC) so you'll need to do that too.
(See how complex this is? :D)

@Seth there was a few "unity 7" ones as example

user136984
Can't access that page... My browser is warning me of an invalid security certificate.

user136984
@Nathan: It is simple to push your key there?

That doesn't mean you can't access it...
@ParanoidPanda Fairly.
It was so long ago, though, I can't remember exactly.

user136984
Well, Firefox gives no option to override.

9:26 PM
It does, you just have to dig.
Anyway...
You'll need to create an account here: mentors.debian.net

user136984
What is the difference between the .org and the .net site?

@ParanoidPanda: I'm sorry. I didn't put in English.
Generic top-level domains (gTLDs) are one of the categories of top-level domains (TLDs) maintained by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) for use in the Domain Name System of the Internet. A top-level domain is the last label of every fully qualified domain name. They are called generic for historic reasons; initially, they were contrasted with country-specific TLDs in RFC 920. The core group of generic top-level domains consists of the com, info, net, and org domains. In addition, the domains biz, name, and pro are also considered generic; however, these are designated as restricted...
> org Originally for organizations not clearly falling within the other gTLDs, now unrestricted.
> net Originally for network infrastructures, now unrestricted.

@Helio huh, maybe remove the global menus?

(reposting because I can't edit past two minutes and all the above text is wrong) @Mateo and @/all the GUI gurus here: Screeenshots below. The first screenshot is gedit ran normally, the second is gedit with CSD enabled with the @Mateo method, the third screenshot is of gedit ran as root (which, ironically, uses header bars).
@Mateo: Maybe. However, I don't know how.

might be easier to just use the gnome flavor of ubuntu
unity goes to lengths to disable so you can use the global menu in the title bar

9:35 PM
@Mateo: The remix of gnome apps with Unity seems horrible to me, however would be great with header bars (I don't claim that is better, but is eyecandy to me).
I tried to put the menus on the window bar, but this doesn't enable header bars.

user136984
@Nathan: And once I've created an account there, then what?

user136984
(Sorry, had to go eat pizza so was gone for a little while.)

@Mateo yeah I found those. It just took me a little while to realize the entirety of a package is the yaml file

user136984
@Nathan: Also, do I register as a "Maintainer" or a "Sponsor"?

maintainer

user136984
9:41 PM
What exactly is a Sponsor?

someone who pays for something/one else on their behalf :p

@ParanoidPanda a person with upload rights who decides to sponsor your package and take care of the uploads.

@Seth Ew, yaml

@RPiAwesomeness I like YAML

@RPiAwesomeness better than XML, I guess.

9:42 PM
I can't stand it :P

Or XAML.

It ain't markup, that's for sure
(someone get it)

@Seth Yeah, but JSON is better :P

@RPiAwesomeness ew, brackets and semi-colons :p

I find it easier to read/understand :/

9:43 PM
Although, it is probably more convenient not having to rely so heavily on formatting

@RPiAwesomeness JSON isn't bad

@Seth hence why I said that

so.. "don't forget 15.10, but it's forgettable almost immediately anyway"?

yes
duh
god :p

user136984
Should I check the "Debian Maintainer" option in my preferences?

9:47 PM
dunno
but I'd guess not

@Zacharee1:

Recommended Ubuntu Mate 16.04

user136984
In Debian, maintainers are people who work on uploaded packages. There are:

Debian Developers

    Debian Project members who have gone through the Debian New Maintainers process and had their application accepted are called Debian Developers

Debian Maintainers (DM)

    Debian Maintainer is an official status of people, who are allowed to upload specific packages (with a DM field set). They don't need to request for sponsorship.

Sponsored maintainers

    You can be a sponsored maintainer. You only need a sponsor.

user136984
So I'm a Debian Developer then?

@ParanoidPanda congratz

user136984
Also, will I be the maintainer of my own package in Ubuntu or will someone else be assigned?

user136984
9:49 PM
@Zacharee1: Well, soon to become, but thanks. :)

heh

@ParanoidPanda You're a Debian Developer?!

Whaaaaaat

@ParanoidPanda you would know if you were a dd
so if you're questioning it, then no.

user136984
9:53 PM
@Seth: No, I mean according to that definitions thing on their site, if I have a package with them already in there then I am counted as one even though I don't develop Debian.

user136984
But I don't have my package there yet... So I'm not anything currently other than someone with some code... :D

user136984
Wait, maybe I read that wrong, when they say application, do they mean package, or application to become one?

user136984
So in that list, what would I be? Or am not in the list? :D

@ParanoidPanda no, you're not. DD's have upload rigbts.
rights*

user136984
Ok, so what am I then? Just a regular guy?

user136984
9:55 PM
:D

Well...

Application as in request to join the team. Not program.

Q: unable to change i3wm scaling

bordeltabernacleI've installed Ubuntu 16.04 on a new laptop. When it logs in I have to change the scale for menu and title bars to 2 in the screen display menu, so the system icons and text is not super tiny. I want to start using the i3 window manager but have the same problem when I log in, the status bar alo...

You don't accidentally become a DD xD

Actually, if you signed up, you are a Debian Developer.
I think there's some confusion over what Debian Developers are.

user136984
9:56 PM
@Seth: Well, would be nice... :P

@ParanoidPanda there will be no Ubuntu maintainer. The package will just be synced from Debian.

user136984
@Nathan: Oh?

They don't have upload rights.

user136984
I am now all confused... :D

@Seth s/rigbts/rights/ looks better

9:56 PM
@ParanoidPanda what is your gpg key fingerprint

I TOLD you it was complex :D

user136984
@Whaaaaaat: I lost it yesterday so I will have to make a new one... :D

Oh wait.

user136984
Maybe tomorrow, getting too late tonight to do it tonight. :)

Now I'm getting mixed up too.
There are so many terms flying around...

user136984
9:57 PM
Well, at least I'm not the only one then... :D

If you have a PGP fingerprint, I can check if you're a DD
Or, what's your DD username?

@Seth you were right. I got confused myself.
Anyway, break time.

user136984
@Nathan: Exactly, I think I just read it wrong, I know I'm not a developer of debian, I'm just interested in what my title is if I actually have one... :D

My title is maintainer.
The uploader... uploads the package and then a member of ftpmasters actually puts it into the archives.
...or something.

user136984
Well, that'll probably be mine too then, and I don't want any more responsibility put on me than that... :P

9:59 PM
@ThomasW. <--- a person who can explain the Debian hierarchy much better than I ever could.

@ParanoidPanda maintainer.
@NathanOsman he should teach a class (hint hint)
@ParanoidPanda you can also ask Faheem or cas in U&L chat, if they're around.
cas is a DD.

user136984
I've been added as a member of two things so far that I shouldn't have been and been given too much responsibility, first I got put on as a member of the development team of a propriety piece of big software (I wasn't meant to be on the list but I never said anything because I wasn't meant to be on it so I just looked into whether I should help in any way, but I found that it was just an accidental addition of me so I didn't do anything and the emails have actually stopped now)...

user136984
And then accidentally got added to an important team's repository elsewhere that I shouldn't have had access to... And they didn't seem to notice that I had been added, nor that I wasn't meant to be there, so when they emailed me to say "You need to get your act together if you're on this team, and actually help us.", instead of saying that I thought I had been added by accident, I did actually help out and get some things done... So that's a few funny stories... :D

@ParanoidPanda Launchpad link?

user136984
@Whaaaaaat: To what?

10:03 PM
To your Launchpad

user136984
No, sorry, that's a world I like to keep as separate as I can. I try not to link accounts that I use. For privacy and security reasons.

user136984
:)

user136984
And paranoia. :P

@ParanoidPanda let me put you on my team, then you can accidentally fix thing there ;P

xD

user136984
10:10 PM
I'm also part of a large maintainers team on LP, though I think that they added me too there accidentally so I've never been sure if I should actually ask them how I can help out, because they might just think I've hacked into their team or something... :D

user136984
You see, I accidentally once requested to join their team, and then about 6 months later they added me even though it was against all their policies of me actually being an employee of them...

user136984
So still not too sure what to do about that...

PHP.
Stop. Kicking. Puppies.

I'm honestly not sure I believe you.. It's hard to "accidentally" add someone to a team. Much less you have it happen 3 times.

Any takers for Ubuntu 14.04 in Macbook Air 2013-mid here askubuntu.com/q/779215/25388

10:13 PM
@ParanoidPanda go start fixing stuff

@masi: are you sure your wifi network is set up right?

user136984
@Seth: Well, I have no idea how the mailing list thing happened, I may have signed up to the site as a user, but how I got onto their developer mailing list is beyond me... Then there was a repository site where I had signed up and then seemingly randomly got added to a team... And about a year ago I requested to join an LP team that they now added me to but shouldn't... The two I originally mentioned were a view long time ago, but they really did happen...

Yes, I think so. Wifi works in all my other PCs, Chromebooks, ...
@Whaaaaaat
It cannot attach router networks.

user136984
And only the last one was with LP, so maybe it was just easier on the other sites, I don't, it all beats me... And it's not like any of them actually happened close to each other, and I think the first two did realise at some point that I wasn't meant to be there because I don't have access to their stuff any more... Or maybe I put it in spam, I can't remember...

ah

user136984
10:17 PM
You don't have to believe me if you don't want to, but I know that I am telling the truth, and I don't know why I would make it up. If it didn't happen, I wouldn't have mentioned it, instead I would have found a way of making it into a joke. :D

well, from what you've said now most of them were hardly out of the blue accidental ;)

@Masi that just sounds... weird.

user136984
@Seth: Well, I don't know... The LP one was probably just an accident... I requested to join, they for some reason added me... The repo one concerns me and that was really strange, but I think I know someone who has a connection with someone in the team so maybe they decided to play a practical joke on me... And the mailing list I still have absolutely no idea about, all I know is I signed up to the user mailing list on that site, and then somehow got onto the private dev one...

user136984
Anyway, I have nothing really more to say on that matter, let's just go with it's strange and forget about it... :)

user136984
And goodnight! :)

10:23 PM
@ParanoidPanda: Good night!
@/all Good night!

@NathanOsman I was pinged? Not as sure about the Debian hierarchy - know the Ubuntu hierarchy pretty well though

We were all just a bit confused about roles - Debian Developer vs. maintainer vs. sponsor, etc.

@NathanOsman DM is similar to PPU rights - restricted upload rights to specific packages without any sponsoring
such as I have for the nginx package
DD is a Debian project member
couldn't say what the other difference is though
DDs aren't just 'DD' for nothing

10:42 PM
@ThomasW. know anything about snappy packaging?

@Seth Limited knowledge, sorry
i haven't investigated it too much

ah. np
I'm trying to repackage some stuff I've worked on for it, but the docs are woefully inadequate.
I'm currently stuck trying to figure out how dependencies work.

@Seth when aren't they with Linux?

@Seth Probably going to want to start for a standard Debian package
then mess with Snappy :P

@ThomasW. already got one ;)
@Zacharee1 huh?

10:45 PM
when aren't Linux docs inadequate?

oh. I didn't say they were confusing, I said they were inadequate.
There are plenty on unconfusing docs out there.

OK, inadequate

@Seth inadequate insomuchas it doesn't state deps, etc?

@ThomasW. they're just not detailed enough
and half of them are from the first iteration which was IoT only, so you're not sure what applies and what's old etc etc
hmm, I might have just figured it out.
huh, VBox is dead.

11:12 PM
ahhhh. anyone remember how to turn off require-signing in 16.04?

Can askubuntu have an autoreload? It's annoying having to reload manual.

no, but you can use a browser plugin

@Seth Ah good thinking.
Mods are very smart.
I think.

11:28 PM
grr
@NathanOsman any idea how I would find out what package provides a certain python module?

...if you know part of one of the package's file's name.

that's the problem, I don't :/

11:48 PM
Which module?

several, but the first one on my list is dbus.

If you scroll down to "[list of files]", it shows the list of files that are provided by the package.
And if you look at that list, you'll see, for example:
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/dbus/__init__.py
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/dbus/...
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/dbus/...
So import dbus would use the modules in that package (for Python 2.7 anyway).

lets find out.
oh.. I'm using 3.

why wasn't that listed under "similar packages" lol
this snappy stuff is hard
grr
> ERROR: Python module dbus not found

11:55 PM
After installing python3-dbus?

I put it in build-packages in the snap.
like I said, the docs are pitiful so I really have no way of telling what I'm doing wrong.

everything
