@Serg this solution will work for computers with the default ubuntu font (which I think is your aim), but if your indicator gets installed on a computer with some other default font that is not monospaced, it might show some offsets because maybe the spacing isn't the same I think
but well, you could use the tab indenting on computers with the ubuntu font and just disable it on computers with other fonts
@IanC and that's why I am going to have two functions ;) one for default font and the other for non-default
cool, should be alright then :D
Mmmm, i so wanna have VGA splitter right now. My left side feels lonely
00:23
Yo guys
Anyone good with the way programs utilize the internet?
Because MEGA is downloading at 300 kbps
But my internet provides 60 mpbs...
If you got any insight, ping me
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice there's nothing like that, ie you can make a program download faster, because the TCP protocol is build that was - it adjusts to your link speed
I'm actually studying that right now
Wait so it's intentionally downloading at like 0.05 times what my max is?
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice There are 2 computers involved in a download. Yours, and the server. You can only download as fast as the server serves the file.
Hm.. I've sen faster speeds from MEGA though, doesn't seem normal to me @Seth
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice iirc MEGA is a file sharing service? There can be a number of different reasons the speed fluctuates.
00:29
very true, but would it be anything on my end?
some programs can download faster though by eliminating some overhead of robust protocols like TCP, like using UDP or the T/TCP. But in the endgame the link speed (as @Seth said, influenced by both the nodes of the connection) will limit the speed
or is it too hard to tell?
and ISPs in some countries sell the internet with a advertised speed and deliver the minimum they are obligated by law
@Seth kind of. Server will detect if there's congestion on network and trim down value of packets by half at the point of congestion. so if server detected there's congestion at 50 packets, it will drop down to 25 and try to ramp up with every ACK
@Serg no, I mean many download servers throttle their speeds.
00:31
@Seth right, they throttle exactly to avoid congestion
@IanC UDP is not reliable though
for some services it is reliable enough, if you don't need to check that every data arrives
T/TCP is reliable though, and eliminates some overhead from common TCP
well, for data transfer it better have all data arrive. You don't want customers complain about corrupted files all the time
If it's video or audio, dropped packets here and there are ok, missing milliseconds of video ain't big deal, but files do require reliability
that's what I mean't by some services, I was going to use live video streaming as an example
for data transfer reliability is obligatory indeed
sigh . . . speaking of TCP and UDP, I've exam tomorrow about this stuff
I think i might stay up and skip second lecture tomorrow
00:36
what will the exam cover?
TCP, UDP, basic formulas, probably some basic types of connections and their speed. We haven't covered anything fancy yet, so i hope it won't be that difficult.
and i need to write up lab report. Mmmm, totally gonna stay up
by the way, some programs that were not so connection-based (like programs that were supposed to request a single file from a server and download it) usually used UDP, with the reliability of the data exchange being controlled in the application layer. T/TCP then came as a middle ground between TCP and UDP, to avoid programmers having to reinvent the wheel every time (and getting the reliability control back to the transport layer where it belongs)
being transaction-based lowered the overhead making it more efficient and faster than TCP
Hello from a kayak.
maybe I got too excited talking about this, been reading about this stuff for a while, guess I was waiting for the opportunity to talk about it haha
@NathanOsman careful not to drop your phone in the river
00:40
nice @NathanOsman! fishing? :)
I've got it in a zip-loc.
do people fish from a kayak???
No fishing.
Just a nice calm lake.
some do, there's a friend of mine from work that wants to buy a kayak for fishing @edwinksl
@edwinksl happened to my friend once. i bought her xiao mi m1 , but she rejected it, since she already planned getting a newer one
00:41
@IanC wow, okay, i have never heard nor seen it before
maybe it's not very common, I think I've never seem it either, but sounds cool
grab some beer, get some exercise and maybe fish some dinner :D
so little space on kayak and it isn't the most stable thing in water. hard to imagine people want to fish in it except for YOLO folks :p
the fishing kayaks are probably a bit more stable
Darn, just got done answering someone, and then the question got deleted. :(
@IanC heh looks awesome
00:47
@Terrance lolz
@Terrance link?
It's gone.
@Seth "what"
It was about command line key generating
gpg
@Terrance I have 10.8k rep though
mod powers :p
True that
I think it was deleted by OP
00:48
I can still see it :p
Still almost 2.5K left for me to go.
hurry up then
;)
@Zacharee1 -.-
WOrking on it
I think I have maybe earned close to 300 rep over the last 3 days.
@Zacharee1 that misspelling in OP's username is triggering me
YEAH
oop
ugh, why can't we see answers for CVed questions in the queue
I lied. Only 205 Rep over the last 3 days. :(
00:58
That is OK. I have been working so much lately, I haven't had a lot of time to really sit down and answer questions.
CVs done for today
TBH, i sometimes regret choosing engineering as my major
Dealing with all the fourier and laplace bs is tiring
@Serg should've done tech tsk
@Zacharee1 it's just that the seeds were planted too late. I've never been doing tech stuff until i got to college
tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk
:p
01:04
i guess, my kids will have it better off - they'll learn Linux and programming from early age
@Serg well think of it this way. You have a natural skill in computers. Engineering will only make you more appealing to potential hirers
Sysadmin with engineering degree ? Sounds over qualified XD
( which is a common reason for candidate rejection )
But yeah, it's definitelly more appealing
and you also have two very popular fields to apply to
Experience is a huge part of it too! :)
That ^
01:06
@Terrance Too bad he'll need 40 years of it
I've 31k rep on AU over 2 years of my presense on AU, so that's gotta trim off a 0.05 years form that requirement, eh ?
The team of guys I work with in the data center, that is one of the biggest questions we ask is experience with Linux. Extremely helpful when it comes to troubleshooting servers that have dropped out of the cloud environment.
Of course knowing the server hardware helps too.
@IanC compelling reason
01:10
Sounds about right.
and more honest than 90% of the answers :p
@Seth Apparently the chameleon in that video is the chameleon from SUSE. Here's another video by them: youtube.com/watch?v=_9aLiv5M6AQ
if I was to leave my current job, I'd consider working on the info tech area (I know, I'm being too broad, would still have to find what specific area really appeals me) but my degree has nothing to do with it
i am starting to think i just gotta give short and not very descriptive answers, because that's exactly the type of questions they ask
@Terrance yep!
01:14
"Why are you interested in this internship ?" Uh, honestly ? Because I need experience, and ain't no other place is willing to give no experience
@Seth I think those guys are actually local boys to where I am from, just further south.
but for now I have stability working for the state, even if the paycheck isn't thaaat high. And I get time to keep my tech stuff as a hobby
plus I'd probably need some sort of degree to get in that area anyways
just curious, in which area do you guys work?
Sometimes stability is the way to go. After I got laid off, I did consulting but then ended up back in a normal job for stability. I needed something to keep me going.
@IanC I am a data center build technician.
Nice! Even though my work is mostly manual labour, I like the environment, it's not stressing at all, having time to myself and my hobbies, not bringing work problems home and the stability, specially since economy is in a difficult moment right now in my country
I work mooring boats at the docks
Another thing that is cool is I can study when there is nothing to do on work, so I bring some programming/networks/linux books on my cellphone and read them when I have nothing to do on the job :)
That's a good thing to do. Hands on when you can do it is the best thing to do.
Just like this systemd bug they are talking about. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to get my system to crash with it at all. :(
01:29
I've seem Nathan's message, but I didn't know there was a bug behind the statement
what is it about?
@NathanOsman btw, have you seen this site: devuan.org
@IanC you mean the systemd bug ?
yeah
01:31
I am running the while true loop on the bug, and my system isn't doing anything. I can still stop and start my daemons. I can do everything on the system still. I don't get it.
basically , if you send null notification onver systemd, it crashes
nice vector for DOS attacks
I am going to try a clean reboot. Just testing if this bug is affecting my 16.04 system
@Terrance if you haven't updated in last 4 days, it probably does. It's not version specific though it seems, people on github reproduce it with couple different systemd versions on debian
NOTIFY_SOCKET=/run/systemd/notify systemd-notify ""
Is that the bad guy?
I have updated
Yep, no crash on my system at all.
@IanC I believe so.
01:34
yessir
I'm back now.
Exactly the same thing as on github github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/4234
NOTIFY_SOCKET is not defined on a regular shell, is it read by systemd as the destination of some notification?
Man, that was fun.
OK, time to go feed my dogs and give the one her shots. Enjoy all!
01:37
see you later @Terrance!
on the comments it seems the bug isn't affecting everyone though

There's a nice view of the lake.
Nice.
beautiful shot @NathanOsman, nice place you have there :)
@NathanOsman niiiiice
good photo

It is a little under-exposed but good composition...

Q: Minecraft Keys Not Working

David Cole - Grammar PoliceWhen I use ctrl to sprint in minecraft, and try to use 2 or 7 to switch between hot-bar slots, nothing happens, however as soon as I release ctrl, the keys work again. This does not happen on Windows or MAC (on same PC + keyboard.) Does Ubuntu have a key shortcut that is causing this? How can I f...

Thanks.
Holy crap nathan
what camera are you using
I don't take that good of pictures but...
01:47
It's a OnePlus 3.
Okay, I'm using a rebel t5
I also have a T5i but didn't bring it because water :D
true :P
Got up early for that one
Amazing shot.
Thank you!
I don't really get out much anymore but this weekend I went camping with my scout troop and me and my friends got up at 2 this morning with our cameras to get some good shots
01:50
well sense we are all showing off...
lol, people are afraid of chrome extensions
@Serg I hate Chrome Extensions
The hike down, the fog came up
@TheXed and why is it so ?
01:52
Because I have to manage them for 1000 users at work...
Is there a photography SE site?
I think so @DavidCole-GrammarPolice, I've seem it before
@TheXed well, that's from sysadmin point of view. I'm dealing with my father here
It's far more judgement
Sorry I'm spamming pics D:
01:54
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice yes you here is, and Nathan is on that site too
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice where was this taken
I took it in California when I went to see my girlfriend @edwinksl
sigh. , i wish i had a brother or sister who were tech savv or at least were doing Linux like i do
01:57
@Serg I will be your brother from another mother...
@Serg lol, not going to happen
I like the shadow in this one
@TheXed :D yay
I have billions of photos, I can't possibly show them all to you...
@edwinksl welp , too late for that, but at least i've got you guys
01:59
The islands over the sea breeze
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice one of my faves that I have taken recently...
of our family farm...
That's really cool! @TheXed
looks like something from horror movie
Oh!
Speaking of of something that looks like a horor movie...
O_O
Seattle Washington
@TheXed typos
@TheXed that typo
Speaking of of something that looks like a horror movie...
lol
I was in a hurry...

that one was from my other camera
Thank you autocomplete for all the wonderful moments !
hence the letters and numbering
Doggo
Had to dig deep for this one...
02:05
Started cmatrix on my new screen. Because why not
One of my favorites...
@TheXed wow
$_$ so many cool wallpapers ( wink wink )
lets keep AU General on topic :P
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice that is over rated :p
02:08
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice sorry, what?
"on topic"?
What does that mean?
Not just posting photos lol
how can I connect to a ssh server and share files
scp and sftp
like on windows i would use a program called winscp
use scp, the usage is very similar to the ssh client (since it is a client actually, but with the aim to transfer files only)
02:14
how do I use scp?
I haven't used it yet, but if you know how to use the ssh terminal client you should get it real quickly, let me get an example
Oh that looks like a lot of work...
I will just remote into windows :-P
or better yet...
say you want to copy the file /home/user/myfile from the remote server with IP 123.123.123.123 to your local folder /home/localuser
vnc viewer,,,
would be something like:
scp [email protected]:/home/user/myfile /home/localuser
if I'm not mistaken
as I said, I haven't used it myself yet, but seems simple on the man pages, give it a look!
02:37
be right back folks
02:54
@edwinksl I used something that I learned from you quite extensively in this answer: askubuntu.com/a/832170/57576
apt-file is pretty cool :)
And thanks for the lesson!
@andrew.46 :p apt-file is awesome, i use it to find things all the time
Yay, I froze the self-order kiosk at McDonald's!
They don't like their own coupons apparently.
03:12
@edwinksl I do like the comment on the counterfeit question: Go to the library and find a good book :)

Q: Ubuntu 16.04, selecting Ubuntu in grub just restarts comp

FirecoreUbuntu 16.04, selecting Ubuntu in grub just restarts computer. I fresh installed windows 10 then immediately fresh installed Ubuntu. When i choose Ubuntu it just restarts computer. Linux rookie here obviously. Running Linux live USB had no issues. Had Ubuntu 15.10 running fine on this system bef...

it seems to me that 80% of making anything is just juggling around basics
03:31
gotta love dillbert haha
long time I didn't see those cartoons
@Serg what is the issue? Something about Gtk?
@IanC Fourier series and Fourier transform :)
Just trying to catch up on my digital and analog communication stuff
I had this on college, would have to study it again if I needed it though
I remember more about Laplace transforms then Fouriers
I think i killed my brain when i was taking Circuit Analysis with Laplace. I don't understand how i passed that class with B mark
had to use it a lot on a class called Chemical Process Control
you make EE right?
Yup
03:39
I think transforms are a bit heavier on your course, because it uses it a lot right?
Yes. And quite honestly, it hasn't been approached well enough in my program. Basic circuit analysis classes are just algebra, then you get to that Laplace class, and all of a sudden boom !!! Hello Calculus !!!
And partial fractions
I've talked with one guy about this. We agreed that students basically try to figure out math and at the same time figure out how does it apply to circuit analysis, which is wrong
It'd be nicer if there was slower pace
I agree
it only stimulates getting enough grade to pass an exam, instead of making an incentive for you to go after information and really learn stuff

Q: Ubuntu 16.04/Apache 2.4.18: 403 Forbidden

evilarceusTrying to set up a Minecraft Technic Solder repository on my home server. Here is my 000-default.conf in /etc/apache2/sites-available/: <VirtualHost *:80> # Host that will server this project. ServerName 192.168.1.19 ServerAdmin *email* # The location of public directory. DocumentRoot /home/e...

which is actually a broad issue on the educational system, it's one of the reasons I wonder if it would be worth to make some graduation (or course) in the info tech area
03:54
That's exactly what I want. I wanna really learn this stuff, I want to really appreciate the genius of Laplace and Fourier and other methods to analysis. But in the end, it all just comes down to 1 or 2 hours of bull and spooking students about bad grade. That's totally wrong
I want to love that knowledge, I want to be obsessed with it, spend hours upon hours researching that stuff and doing something with it. It's just not happenng that way.
If only we could have the passion and freedom we have to study our hobbies, along with the information access and guidance we have (or are supposed to have) in college, that would be a good mix
educational system does not work the way it was supposed to IMHO, but I'm not sure exactly how I'd do it differently
@NathanOsman Did you happen to grab that in RAW too?
04:11
is the right spelling responsable or responsible?
I think I've been writing this word wrong for years O.O
@Seth It should have saved the RAW yes.
I'll have to check though.
morning :)
as far as I know about docky, this isn't a bug askubuntu.com/review/close/624865
this is really sad to see this kind of question being closed without a good reason. there is not even a bug report posted.
04:36
@Zacharee1 new misspelling detected askubuntu.com/q/832414/295286

yeah
@edwinksl maybe the edit counter on the users page includes the edits that were later lost because the post was deleted, whereas the counter on your activity page gets updated???

morning :)

I have a feeling that you are not really using Ubuntu but just reposting your closed question about CentOS, replacing that with Ubuntu (askubuntu.com/q/832458/367990). Also, if you really use Ubuntu now, we need the full command output with all error messages to be able to find out what the problem is and help you. — Byte Commander 20 secs ago
Anyone else sharing my doubts? ^
sure, but I don't like to be a detective
@ByteCommander you think those are bad? Have a look at askubuntu.com/questions/832422/…
ah you have :=D

@ByteCommander OH I GOT A GOOD ONE

@Anwar okay
@Anwar no need to be sad. people including me make mistakes all the time. point them out and move on.
@ByteCommander I misclicked and did a NAU so rectracted >:)
@NathanOsman I agree on this. systemd is a monstrosity and 1 bug away from rendering ALL our systems unbootable.

@SmokeDetector hmm what should we do?
i could resolve the long url but that answer isn't an answer anyway
09:18
what's the trick? I'm such a noob...
it looks like an answer to this noob here :\
should have slept more than 2 hours...
oh wait it is an answer, lol
maybe i should sleep more
i thought it was more of a comment
since OP also posted it as a comment...
let's all go back to bed hahaha
but the answer got deleted... so maybe it wasn't an answer?
Morning!
I think it got deleted as spam
morning there @Arronical, how do?
09:23
"When playing a video, the cpu usage drops." really? ._.
@Zanna Definitely think this is the best idea of the day!
:)
there is still a lot of time for better ideas...
@Zanna I'm not so sure. Traffic chaos, less than ample sleep, a cold office and workmen downstairs drilling through external walls and listening to commercial radio! Eurgh, bed sounds better.
@Arronical you just need coffee/tea :)
haha that does sound uncomfortable
09:32
@Zanna are you asking how to resolve short URLs? there are tons of websites out there that do this :p
haha I will make research effort before asking for help next time
@edwinksl Don't need to tell me twice, coffee fixes almost everything.
almost, indeed
Learning Swift is like trying to swat Mosquitoes
@Edity so you are saying learning swift is easy?
09:36
@Edity you get blood on your hands?
@Zanna lol no
there's an annoying high pitched buzz in your ears?
Yes
@edwinksl Mosquitos in korea is SUPER fast, so no. It's not easy.
haha Korean mosquitos work harder than those elsewhere?
@Edity getting cold soon, hang on for a couple more months
09:43
Today is the first cold day here, it's the exact pattern we had 5 years ago, when I remember 2nd October was so hot I had to wear shorts and a sleeveless top, and the next day it was scarf & gloves
that is some wild variation
which is common here too :/
our weather is very much determined by the vagaries of prevailing winds... I think at a similar latitude there are polar bears in Canada, yet we are blessed by this Caribbean breeze
Still 20 degrees C here.
Hooray, just remembered I have a fleece here. The most unattractive but practical of garments!
@edwinksl I loled
@ByteCommander it seems it is "ask a weird question on AU"-day :P
