does cmake afford you a way to determine your environment? if it does, then you could throw anything with a makefile - a script run... whatever. so, it's no big thing. the problem with cmake is that it is cross-platform.

I've come to the conclusion that CMake makes some simple things difficult and some difficult things simple.
I think I've got something that works though.

12:39 AM
make and cmake diff?

hrm, the framework I was using for my scope is obsoleted, and the sdk doesn’t have the one that isn't... this is going to be intresting
guess I'll throw the sdk ppa at it and see what happens...

12:58 AM
well, that was fun. just manually edited it to say 14.10 and the policy version to 1.2...

1:17 AM
woo! .5 version is up for RSS Feeds Scope

1:29 AM
\o/
Nothing like a version bump to fix something.
For the record, the 2buntu app also uses the 14.10 SDK.
I think we were having issues with earlier versions too.

yeah, they pushed a bunch of the dev frameworks off the list
gr, there is always someone that can't follow instructions...
got a 2star that said "Does not view custom RSS Feeds"
um... ok, it's been viewing them fine, and I said to leave out http:// so you aren't typing as much on a phone...

Q: "Makefile:29: recipe for target 'siplib.o' failed" - SIP installation

LachlantulaI'm trying to install SIP 4.16.5 for Python 3.4 on Ubuntu GNOME 14.10. I type sip-4.16.5$ python3 configure.py and I get the following: This is SIP 4.16.5 for Python 3.4.2 on linux. The SIP code generator will be installed in /usr/bin. The sip module will be installed in /usr/lib/python3/dist-pa...

Man, the Internet has gone crazy here.
I can't make any outbound connections.
But I had an RDP session open, which is what I'm using to chat right now.
It seems like existing connections are working fine, but anything new is dropped.
Hrm... maybe that isn't the problem.
It seems more like it's DNS lookups that are failing.

what the, my app show "Uknown" for the publisher/creator it is misspelled too, there is something strange going on.
lol, it picked up on company name?

2:07 AM

huh, I wouldn't hold out for those

hmmm
got a new bug report but something tells me not bug report

2:39 AM
I am getting an itch..

2:57 AM
uh oh

3:25 AM
huh cool
should i use a 16384-bit key?

on what
If its Encrypting something, anything but AES is ok

RSA for SSH
or should i go 64-kbit?

3:43 AM
do the 64k

4:13 AM
Is that some kind of dance?
;P

6 hours later…
baba is back :=)

Oli
Yeah not sure how long that'll last this time. The spam-blocking system has had quite a few upgrades since the last sustained attack.

Q: Importing packages from linux ISO

Aashiz PoudelOk, I have isos of Puppy Linux and just now I have downloaded iso for Ubuntu. Puppy Linux does not have gcc installed . But I know Ubuntu 14 has gcc and many other softwares installed. So Can I import those packages(like gcc, etc) from iso file of Ubuntu and install it in puppy Linux or vice vers...

11:18 AM
@Oli Hopefully it's enough. If not, on the lighter side - it's a Free Flag Party

Does anyone know any good disk encryption software if you only want to encrypt part of your disk?

@hbdgaf : what's a PEP. (except the ticker symbol for PepsiCo?) ;-)
@Toroidal: Only one answer: TruCrypt!

user136984
@Fabby: Thanks! :)

@Toroidal (though the single guy who has been maintaining this thing has sold out to the NSA, his latest binaries and sources are still available everywhere including here:

user136984
@Fabby Thanks! :)

11:53 AM
:) I just corrected an error... That's why you got it twice... :P

user136984
:)

12:14 PM
@Fabby: Gibson says a lot of things. Not all of it makes sense
@Toroidal: On ubuntu? gpg

user136984
Yes, on Ubuntu.

user136984
:)

user136984
@JourneymanGeek Thanks! :)

@JourneymanGeek: He never said that... (I'm a bit behind on the podcasts though) It's my own interpretation of the facts... :P

@Fabby: gibson has one major claim to fame
(and while I'm not convinced that spinrite is the best thing since extra mature cheddar, it might have been useful once)

12:17 PM
Yeah, but I like to listen to SecurityNow: if puts me to sleep with a smile on my face...
I owe a license, and though it's not the next best thing since sliced bread, I've solved a few problems with it...

@Fabby that diatribe reminds me of why i don't do as much open source as i could. he's not angry, he's just saying. and i get that. put code out there for people to use and feel beaten about with it? fine, you write all the code. have fun. sort of thing.

@Fabby: the 'explaination' of how it works seems psudoscientific
and its pre sata pre SSD pre...

@hbdgaf: I've read your post 3 times now and still don't get it...
Ah! edit

and now you get it or not?
@JourneymanGeek pseudo-scientific

I thought it was a pun to sudo

12:20 PM
might have been

p sudo scientific?
:D
like the one from xkcd:
fetch me a coffee!
no!
sudo fetch me a coffee!

sudo make me a sandwich. yeah that one

Uh, oh yes..
:)
@JourneymanGeek: SpinRite still works though... SATA, SAS, even on SSD drives! (though anything above a level 2 is not really good for an SSD drive...)

Am I the only one that reads this and thinks - "You shouldn't be running a GUI as root anyway. Suck it up buttercup."
I just have to share this...
sup @Mateo

not too much

12:33 PM
I just, probably in poor judgement, talked back a little at Michael Hall on G+. I think his trumpeting of U-touch is nice, but the articles he's touting would really get more coverage if someone with a significant amount of followers just tweeted the site as a whole instead of piecemeal touting individual articles.

ah, I don't get on there often

I use it as a real news funnel. Facebook is for drama, the people I follow on G+, I follow with a modicum of respect. If they have something to say, I genuinely want to hear it. So, it's sort of a weird place for me to talk.

huh, I wasn't following him. anyway there was this cool article about container data centers that Jorge put up

yeah, most everything Jorge puts up is relatively cerebral or really needs to be said - like good budget video cards - etc etc

so just as I was about to create templates with the channel names on Ardour, they were like, hey lets try Reaper for windows - so ok, switch over on the dual-boot fire up the 60 day trial, and the licence cost seems reasonable for paid software 60 for a non-for-profit, but then there is the think that they really aren't wanting to spend money right now...

12:42 PM
@Mateo I still owe you for that BL2 license. After I cover my rent for the year, I plan on a gift card on that one - since it didn't turn out to be as easy as I'ld hoped and I really had to be working on other things.
You have something that has a pledgie or whatever?

It looks just as good, but you still have to assign tracks inputs/outputs then make templates, name them and all that. I'm not sure they know that all the magic is someone setting down at a computer making it work

@Mateo hah - did you see the discussion of the openshot funding horribly poor timing for bad things happening debacle? people seem a little irritated, but it seems to me that it is without much grounds.

@hbdgaf hm, I don't think I set that up. I have a bitcoin address on my profile, but would need to boot into my 12.04 to to check it

oh, i don't have any bitcoin laying around atm... i was trying to find a way to put something on a project. nobody wants to contribute to a project that has zero backers - so trying to get you over that hump. i've donated to myself before just so that stigma doesn't apply ;)

yeah, hm. I did that bluetooth script. that was a fun thing, but It is pretty much doing all it is going to do. because a) dosn't work on iThings b) I have no real use for it right now

12:49 PM
yeah, the ithings bluetooth stack is really broken. because they don't allow "send to bluetooth" sorts of stuff - the ithings don't even work with photo kiosks. status: by-design

1:01 PM
@hbdgaf how is your main project going?

More of the same. It's progress, but it feels like a wall. I'm at a point where I have to build the reduction set parts. So, not knowing which ones to build is the problem. You spend time building each one - most of the challenge is building the right ones two thirds of the time so you don't just get a bunch of poor results. I'm debating about spending more time on that graph to visualize reductions in the nearish future.
On the bright side, I found a question on SO about calling talib with random strings and picked up another star on github.

ah, cool

I guess 3 stars for something so niche - only two really count since I know one of them - is something.

@hbdgaf: what do you like about this comment then?
(think, not like...)

I like that you're telling them that they shouldn't be doing that. I didn't say it out loud, but you did, so I liked it.

1:23 PM
anyone have any thoughts on this

@hbdgaf huh, don't you usually just type python3, and what would that alias do for changing the install version?

if the installer inspected the "run name" that launched it then checked usr/bin/env for the appropriate launcher - you could wind up with a problem. the user hasn't tried using python3 explicitly yet...
@Mateo you're SUPPOSED to just type python3. aliasing is something that arch does that the pep tells you not to do. so, it doesn't sound like a proper ubuntu question.

yeah, because just python already exists so...

The theory is to use 'python' when it's python 2 and 'python3' when it's 3.x for clarity. Evidently some people disagree on sanity.

that is what I was always doing

1:31 PM
That's what everyone except archlinux is doing...
So, you see where I hit a no support wall?

@hbdgaf: want me to step in on that one and POLITELY ask him why he's not just installing from the standard repository?
>:)

if you feel like it... sure. if he needs a newer version, that would explain what you're asking though - so it might not be THAT productive.

OK.. Thanks for all the back-ground info though...

it's a compound question. i need edge lib so i just install it, but i broke my install because i'm doing something insane. make my insanity work plz - sort of thing.

I like just watching you talk to Mateo and Nathan... I learn more here in the chat room then solving dumb problems... Maybe I'll migrate to U&L...
>:)

1:41 PM
Whats your favorite tool for creating windows boot usbs?

@OliverSchöning: to be avoided at all cost!
Don't do it!
Just download Ubuntu and put that on a USB stick!

user136984
I just got an email saying: "Congratulations -- you are one of the top new Ask Ubuntu users for the month of January 2015!"! :D

But I wanna try windows 10.. just on my laptop. Not permanently.

(You're in the wrong room to be asking Windows questions. We only like to delete it here)

Hehe yeh

Sorry...
@Toroidal: That's only because the mail daemon doesn't visit this chat room!

I hope that one day Windows will be overtaken and crushed by the mighty power of Ubuntu! >:)

Here's one for you: Congratulations!
@hbdgaf: have you looked at the root GUI guy's response?

It's a legitimate response, but we've talked about it before at length... let me dig it up

A: When I create an account without password, Ubuntu still asks for it!

hbdgafNot TOO bad ideas, but still not recommended: In order to get a no password at login for the gui, you use the autologin options for your login manager lightdm or gdm. lightdm system settings - user accounts - your username - automatic login lightdm is the default, so check the gdm docs if you're...

So, you need to know which root login approach it happening to fix it. Since a single purpose box is almost certainly auto-login.

@Rinzwind What do you recommend doing about: askubuntu.com/questions/580419/….? If the question is not about Ubuntu, should it be migrated to Web Applications Q&A because it is a question about Facebook?

1:55 PM
@karel: you can always flag it for moderator attention...

@OliverSchöning I was whipping up a "Windows boot USB..." "This is sparta" meme lolgif

@Fabby There are a couple of Ubuntu issues lurking in the question. 1. One answer recommends using Tor Browser which is cross platform, but there are other web browsers that could be recommended that aren't cross platform. 2. What about controlling cookies generally, not just cookies that are related to Facebook?

@hbdgaf: a light just went up.. I attended the same school... I never went with him to the same school...
@karel: Aaah! NU snap ik het! ;-)

2:14 PM
wow it's been a long time since I used the old school gnome before . I used to love mintmenu but ... it is hideous
after using whisker menu in xfce for so long
just switching from xubuntu to ubuntu-mate now but.... im gonna have to go back maybe
compiz is hideous too
just slow and ugly
xfce window manager was so nice and lightweight
In lubuntu I used to use xcompmgr a long while back but ... i remember seeing something about a newer nicer xcompmgr
I can't find it on google though
I remember xcompmgr being like... outdated and not supported anymore and everyone was moving to some new thing....
If I could just use like metacity still in mate... I guess that might work
but i've no clue what Im gonna do about the matemenu that thing is horrifying
can't resize it or nothing
it's just there -- in your face -- accept me as I am -- haters gonna judge type thing
what was that... oh yeah... all bass no trebble or what not

user136984
Wow! That first post review queue is rather long today, I hope that I'm not the only one working on it today! :D

@Toroidal: me too!

Well I'm glad that I am not the only person working on it then! :D

20 posts done! Come back tomorrow!

It told me to come back in 9 hours! :D

Me too... that's tomorrow!
And now leave me alone!

user136984

I need to review a bunch of edits by a guy named Toroidal!
:P

user136984
:D

2:39 PM
@Toroidal: I'm going to improve an edit of yours as you changed "power on" to "power" instead of "power-on" right now...
I'll get back to you afterwards to see whether you got any points for it...
Finished...
Did you get any points for the last one?

user136984
@Fabby: Hmm... I don't know, I have got +6 points now, so if you only did 3 then probably! :D When you say the last one exactly which one is that one just to make sure? :)

:) the one I answered!
this one

user136984
@Fabby: Oh yes I did get points for that one! :)

Good, so now I know how to punish someone: open in a new tab; reject and edit myself... >:)

In my Universal Access settings I turned on the on screen keyboard just wondering how it worked, but no sign of it, is there a special keyboard shortcut or something to bring it up? :)

Actually, if the review queue is very full, it allows me to edit some more apparently... One more coming up for you!

user136984
@Fabby Thanks! :)

Lots more for you!
tip:
When someone says: the error message is:
use backticks
When they say "something like"
use quotes.
and always italicize their question!

user136984
Ok, thanks for the advice! :)

That's it! Nothing more... :p

user136984
3:06 PM
Ok! :D

user136984
Does anyone know if that bug in Steam has been fixed yet which could delete your entire home area? I heard about it sometime ago here, so was just wondering what was happening with it! :D Although luckily I don't play games any more (on the computer) so no need to get something like Steam which could delete my stuff! :D And for the games that I do play, like Chess, I don't need a computer! :D

3:24 PM
Nah! It's documented now, so it's not a bug any more! It's a feature!
>:)
BTW: just answered one of ByteCommander's questions: askubuntu.com/questions/579701/…

user136984
@Fabby :D

Thanks!

user136984
You're welcome! :)

user136984
Where is it documented? :D

You should have seen some improvements over the last few minutes!
Where is what documented???

user136984

user136984
@Fabby: You said: "Nah! It's documented now, so it's not a bug any more! It's a feature!". So I was wondering if it was really documented, and if so then where? :D

I saw it fly by here in the chat room (probably Rinzwind who said it)...
I don't use steam, so frankly, I don't give a flying dragon! ;-)

Huh, interesting Jolla reopened croud funding on their tablet.

Can't explain why! But just had to share it! ;D :P

@Toroidal yeah, @RPiAwesomeness was following that, I think it was fixed. And it only did it in a strange setup.

user136984
@Mateo Ahh... Ok! For a minute there I thought that you were talking about the image I just posted! :D

Like if you moved your home and steam setup, so with defaults everything is a-ok

Witcher 2 played great on my rig, lots of fun, now they fixed the crashing caused by the kernel :P even better!

5:06 PM
@karel webchat would probably be a good place.

How about this for an answer?
As you didn't specify which exact NVidia hardware you have I can only give a vague answer:
Some "nvidia optimus thingies" take a long time to initialise. The only recourse is to wait until it boots completely!

that's a comment :=D

5:24 PM
Doesn't fast boot mess with LiveBoot too?

5:44 PM
Thanks

@ByteCommander: You want me to tell you why some developer somewhere made a mistake??? I'm very sorry, but my right telepathy antenna is broken off and you and the developer are both too far away from me to link directly to you both right now. ;-)

@Fabby Hi first of all.

:D

Well, maybe you could have known whether it depends on a bad config...

Toroidal was laughing very heard when he read my response to your Q

or anything else that could be repaired (incompatible with some other app or service maybe)

6:23 PM
Looks like a bug to me (but I didn't go hunting for one: not enough rep today; need to solve a few more questions)
I gave up on Nautilus the moment I found that PPA...

And you did'nt answer how to entirely replace Nautilus

My admin user still has Nautilus, but my day-to-day user has nemo

It is still the default app for folders and autoplay

There is a way, but I've never tried it as my
Ah!
For one user?
The only thing I can't seem to get done is FireFox...
that one keeps on using Nautilus...
all the rest I did...
Lemme look how.
This article is what I used...

Go Hawks!

6:29 PM
:D

@NathanOsman: You too???

Why not?

Is there any American in this forum who hates sports??? [Grinning, Ducking & Running]

Our family was invited over to our friends' place to watch the game.
Should be fun.

(My dad played football in premier league, so I kinda don't like sports)
Ah!
Hot dogs, beer, hamburgers...
Shall I come do the catering???

6:33 PM
When reading things on an international site like Ask Ubuntu, I've learned that "football" doesn't necessarily mean what you think.

Nachos, Chili con carne, Surf&Turf (hte best in the world, mine)
I'm talking to you about American football and about my dad as "soccer"
BRB
So trying to use what's inside your brain already when using the word "football"...
To me it would look weird to be talking to an American about "American football". To you it's just "football".

6:50 PM
I'm not an American.
Though I still understand what you're saying.
I'm fairly certain that there are only two countries that don't equate football with soccer: Canada and the US.

@ByteCommander: I remember now why I never completely changed over to nemo: My Admin user still has Nautilus installed and unless I give him nemo too (which I should be doing by now as I have't had any issues) I can't solve the FireFox issue...
@NathanOsman: Ah! You're from La Nouvelle France then?
;-)

Erm... I don't speak French.

"Canadia" used to be called "La Nouvelle France" a few 100 years back...

Uhm... I don't think so. It was a British colony.

In contrast to "Louisiana", which was the country of Louis XIV...

6:55 PM
In fact, Canada is still a member of the British Commonwealth.

Were you born in Canada?

Yes.

Oh... There is a sizeable French-speaking community in Canada...
>:)
That part used to be called "La Nouvelle France"
And I know about the commonwealth...
And Lizzy still being on the Canadian $
:P
It's just that I've been interested in History all my life, so when I met a funny non-French looking but still French-speaking guy in France and told him his French was very good, he told me: "Mais bien sûr! Je suis de la Canada!" ;)
(Off course, I'm from Canada)
So he told me that everyone in Canada is bilingual...

If you live in Quebec, yes.
But outside of Quebec, not everyone speaks French... let me assure you :)

Oooh.... So you don't speak French and never had any French in school?
Canada is still on the "To do" list...
All Canadians I've met are very nice people and have spoken a passable French... (until you now)
just wanted to move the "until you now" a bit further away from "very nice people"... ;-)
