12:33 AM
surprised nobody suggested just renaming the files to something that is certain to not be an existing file, and then renaming them appropriately at the end

o/ @Chan-HoSuh

\o @KGIII

Did ya have a good Halloween?

I don't celebrate it, but it's a Saturday, so things are good :)
How about you?

I don't normally celebrate it but it turns out there's a traditional event in the parking lot and then in the hotel that I'm at.
So, I spent a small fortune (like a buck or two per kid and had almost 200 of them). :/

12:40 AM
still living in a hotel, eh?

LOL Yeah, we're going to go to Florida this week.

wow, you have a lot of kids

Well, they're not mine! :D
I don't know any of them.

ah, you mean for trick-or-treating
you just gave them money?

We were told that we could just put the do-not-disturb sign on the door.
They do a trunk-or-treat thing. Then the kids all come raid us for candy.

12:41 AM
hmm, you must like expensive candy... not to go on about it, but that's a lot of spending for candy

We ran low on candy so She Who Must Be Obeyed went out and got more.
I got them full sized candy bars and a small package of candy and then they could take a fist full of loose candy from a bowl.

huh, I can't take that name seriously when she's the one that went out to get more :D

If I'm going to feed the little buggers I might as well feed them well.

ok I see

It means she got to decide what candy.
Which means she'll get the leftovers.

12:43 AM
hmm you were very generous
I told the doorman not to let any kids through

I try to be. I've only got one life to accumulate so much karma and I kinda owe a little bit, I'm sure.
They have a whole traditional thing here it seems. The hotel does a trunk-or-treat with a lot of locals in the parking lot.
Then they go begging. :D Lots of goblins and ghouls and vampire costumes for girls. Some angels, super heroes, and even the lion from The Wizard of Oz.

I suppose New York City must be going insane right now with partyers
here I am at home, with my Scala code and documents on preprocessing data ...

I dunno? I'm still up in Buffalo.
You've got priorities!

having my own kind of fun :)
yes I do

I'm going to try a series of hacks to get root on this device...
I can't stand not having root any longer.

12:47 AM
I understand. There's nothing like geeking out on a Saturday night.
I've yet to figure out how to root a device, ever. I suck.

yep, get to make my own coffee on the weekends, which I usually don't have time for on weekday mornings
@NathanOsman you have control issues, dude :D

That's always nice. I'm kind of missing my own kitchen and whatnot. I'm half tempted to go home instead of Florida.

@KGIII It's not usually difficult but Google has made things a bit trickier this time around.

@NathanOsman @Mateo Did you get your pull reqs in?

@NathanOsman I thought Google supported root?

12:50 AM
I honestly haven't tried all that hard. I just can't get into the format. I can deal with my phone. I don't like it but I can cope. The larger screen makes me want a better input device and a keyboard takes the portability away.

@RPiAwesomeness Yup.

@Seth Yes and no. They've never officially supported it.
But they've made it easy in the past.

huh.
But it's easy to unlock the bootloader right?

The Nexus devices come unlocked, don't they?

12:51 AM
Now the stock kernel complains when the system partition has been tampered with.
@Seth Oh, of course.

So you could just load a custom ROM to get root, right?

Yup.

@NathanOsman yeah.

So far so good - TWRP is installed.

1:06 AM
anyone here have any opinions about YUV vs RGB?

For what?

for image classification

I'm afraid color isn't my thing :P
I know what YUV and RGB are but not much else.
Flashing ElementalX...
Rebooting...
Boot complete!
Woot! Root successful!
Not only that but this custom kernel has some other options that the stock kernel doesn't.

very nice

1:38 AM
alright then, maybe this is an easier matter to have an opinion on, what's the "best" way to convert RGB to grayscale?

1:57 AM
this is apparently the default method in GIMP: 0.21*R + 0.71*G + 0.07*B

The NTSC standard is probably the most widely recognized.
It's not as biased towards green as the Gimp.

interesting... thanks, @NathanOsman

2:23 AM
finally got zsh set up the way I like it. I think.

Cool.

2:45 AM
lol on my old machine I had caps and escape swapped, so I kept pressing the wrong keys on my new machine. Finally got around to swapping them again but now I'm used to the normal way xD

I'll see if I've "met" you enough by the 4th to be able to leave an accurate and honest review/testimonial for you @Seth. So far you seem pretty damned smart and helpful so, there's that.

You just can't win..
(I was referring to the caps/escape thing --^)

I figured.

just making sure ;D

Yeah, Seth's a great guy :)

2:46 AM
Well, "Nathan speaks highly of him" is probably not an effective testimonial. :D

@KGIII Thank you! I like to at least think I'm somewhat helpful haha

I've read a lot of your answers so, yeah.

Somebody brought up "old memories" earlier and I remember when Seth was first elected moderator. George was the first to announce it :)
Feb 25 '14 at 20:00, by FlackBot
Winners are Seth and Mitch. (results as text)
(FlackBot is George's old account.)

2014 is old, eh?

Hmm... good point.

2:49 AM
LOL It's kind of old, in internet years.

In tech years, yes - it's old.
In actual years, not so much.

I'm kind of old. I love to reflect on how much the tech has changed.

I mean, we were still using Kit Kat back then :P

Oh, heavens!

I'm still using KitKat >.>

2:51 AM
Hmm... I think my phone has 4.2 on it. I'm too lazy to look. I have no idea what that version is.
I don't even know what the current version is.
I'm a straight up Luddite.

I didn't even know what "KitKat" referred to (had to google)

It's also a chocolate bar :)

a good one too.

Can't trick me, man. The candy bar has a space between "Kit" and "Kat"

They've got odd flavored Kit Kats in Japan. :/

2:56 AM
here too

I dunno where "here" is.

I got some nice green tea flavored ones. For some reason, it had Japanese writing on it though
I like to keep "here" vague ... can't make it too easy for the stalkers

The green tea does sound intersting.

they are ridiculously good. I was told they were, but didn't believe it until I tried some :)

I think I saw curry flavored ones being advertised. That doesn't sound good.

2:58 AM
hmm, well Japanese curry is sweet
it could work

I'd try it.
I'm not afeared of nuffin!

maybe this is just an urban legend, but supposedly the fact that Kit Kat sounds like Japanese for "I believe I will succeed" had something to do with its success in japan

I do not speak Japanese so I can not opine.

there's wasabi-flavored Kit Kat of course

That does not sound good to me.

3:02 AM
I thought you weren't afraid? :)

I'd still eat it. I'd have to try it.
It just doesn't sound like it would be good. I'll try most anything once - with some limits.

@Chan-HoSuh that does sound good. Now I want one!

3:30 AM
Hmm... I'm going to rummage and see what Halloween candy is left. We gave the last few kids scads of the stuff.

Pizza is about the spiciest thing I can eat.
(I have an incredibly sensitive tongue.)

don't brag

That's not bragging - there's a lot of food I can't eat.
I can't even drink soda. It causes a painful burning sensation.

huh, sorry to hear that :(
you mean pizza with red sauce on it, or even just pizza with only cheese and no sauce?

No, no - the tomato sauce is okay.
I just can't eat anything more spicy than that.
@Chan-HoSuh Don't feel too bad - my dentist doesn't :)

3:40 AM
hmm, I would never have put pizza as a level for a spiciness scale
how about juice?

Juice is fine.
Anything that isn't carbonated or spicy is probably okay.

I've a sibling who is unable to do much, or any really, citric acid or she breaks out in sores. :/

I can eat lots of normal foods - fish, burgers, chicken, rice, etc.
Oh, and bacon.
4

I know, it's sacrilege but I don't really like bacon a whole lot. Even worse, I prefer the patty known as "Canadian Bacon." (Which is also a good, sort of, movie.)
I'm not sure if not liking bacon is a bannable offense or not. ;)

I'm Canadian so I feel a little bit better hearing that :)

3:50 AM
I'm sort of Canadian.
I am part Micmac, more than 1/4. I'm First Nation's heritage so I'm a citizen by grace of ethnicity. I hold a passport and citizenship in Canada and the US.

Oh, cool.

I come from the Turner's and Hawksworth's in Nova Scotia.

Ah, so we're from opposite coasts then.

I've a small piece of unimproved property in Canada.
I don't normally talk politics but this isn't really politics - I don't vote in Canadian elections as I'm not impacted enough to where I think my opinion should aide or hinder a full-time citizen's vote. So, hmm... Sort of politics but not really.
Just an odd conclusion that I've reached. :D
And yeah, I'm guessing you're out in BC way or?

Yup, near Vancouver.

3:56 AM
It's pretty out there.
Damp but pretty.

Yes and yes :)
The mountains provide a lot of natural beauty.
But it does rain quite a bit.

That is true. They're very... Very majestic.

We get used to it (the rain).
This summer we had a nasty heatwave.
In fact, it got bad enough at one point that Health Canada was issuing air quality warnings.

I don't recall seeing you guys get the slugs that they get a bit south of there - down in Washington area. I've only been out to BC twice though.
Heat and humidity means health concerns.

Yup.

3:59 AM
We get pretty humid back home too. It kills a few in the summer and then a few more go in the winter. The cycle goes on, I guess.
I did find it interesting that you have a rain forest up your way, technically speaking.
I think it's further north than you. :/ I'm not really sure, exactly, where it covers.

Yes, it's further north. Though there are patches of rainforest-like areas in various places nearby.
There's a nice little forest with some giant sequoias and coast redwood trees on Vancouver Island.

I'm not too surprised. You guys get a lot of rain. I was kind of surprised to read about it, it was a long while back, as I always conflated rain forest with the tropics. I was mistaken.
Is it a national park type of thing?

I think so. I visited a few years ago, I can't remember if it was a national or provincial park.

I think I've been there. I'd not swear to it in a court of law.
But, I think I have.

Remember that it daylights savings ends today/tomorrow.
and with that I will be off to bed.
@KGIII Yes, lots of slugs down here. Not sure if that's a good thing or not but we have them..

4:13 AM
Yeah, they're huge @Seth.
I think I too shall meander out of chat, browse a few more questions, and then sleep.
G'night all. Save sleeps when you get there.

g'night!

Goodnight.
I'm a programmer, so I tend to view Daylight Savings Time as The Worst Thing Everâ„¢.

thanks seth! i can pay back the favor now. 8 invites.
If anyone needs a Keybase invite, feel free to hit me up

@Whaaaaaat morning
:)

@Ravan o/

4:23 AM
@Seth hello, what is correct decision here.... OP is not available from 5 years--
even though the post is of low quality, I think it needs to be present (my opinion) :)

@Ravan It's a link-only question. It should be edited.
Put the content from the link into the post and link back as a reference.

Q?

Answer, sorry.
I'm busy rewriting and moderating bug reports because people are dumb.

@NathanOsman every problem like time changes, creates a job for someone else :)
particularly developers

@Whaaaaaat cool. here power loss :(

4:34 AM
"oh this bug's been reported 3 times already! I should report it again!!"

@NathanOsman I have a funny recent anecdote about daylight savings and timezones, if you're interested

so i need some management help
my manager (with no coding or managerial or whatever experience) is demanding access to the code base because "i own everything"
what should i do

what does "access" mean here?

access to developer-only chats and access to source code

@Tim you are always right

4:47 AM
well, what I'm getting at is, how is the code being stored, and how is access controlled? If you have a code repository that can separate read from write access, then you could give your manager read access only

The thing is, I don't want him to have any access.
Because he wants it just to see it.
If he would actually do something with it, I'd be okay. But he wants it just for the sake of having it

and you are opposed to this, for what reason?

Well, he has a very interesting way of slowing things down
He'd get in our way more than he would help us.
Out of his last 15 bug reports, 12 were invalid or dupes.

so you think he will look at the code and file more bug reports?

Either invalid bug reports (as usual), or just complain about what we're doing.

4:52 AM
or perhaps object to brace-style convention being used? :)
hmm, I can see why you'd be reluctant
I presume your manager can order you to do such things though

That's another thing. We're compartmentalized.
The only title he has is "guy who pays for servers"

does he actually manage you?

Nope.
He just pays for the servers.

why do you call him your manager?

Because that's what he thinks he is
And that's how he acts

4:56 AM
I have a feeling a lot is being unsaid here, but from what you said, there's a guy that pays for your server equipment. He has the ability to complain to you and file bug reports, and he has asked for code access. He calls himself your manager, and you yourself call him your manager, yet you say he is just a guy that pays for servers
taken on face value, I can't even assume this guy is able to access your work facilities, let alone your code. Will security even let him in? Very puzzling situation you describe
is he an employee of your firm?

Here's the rundown:

- Small startup, 7 people
- Highly compartmentalized (Everyone runs their own "department" and we're not supposed to interfere with others)
- Completely online
- I'm head of server management and security
- All he does is pay for the server and act as the "company head" although he has basically zero power

o.o what kind of company is this??

Game server.

interesting, well you must have a boss of some kind
have you asked him/her?

We lead ourselves. The heads of each department run their respective sides and we all collaborate together.

4:59 AM
so you hired yourself?

Yes.

well, then, I don't see the problem

Yeah, that's what I think.
But he can be really evil and pull our funding. Basically, he's just the primary investor.

it's a simple trade-off then

@Whaaaaaat sorry to interrupt, who will pay for you?

5:01 AM
He says he wants code access to oversee development (lead dev's job) and check progress (my job).
@Ravan We each get a share of the profits.
Because he has investor status, he thinks he has the right to bypass the process everyone else has to go through for development updates.
(literally send a PM to one of the devs asking "how's coding going?")

can he pull his money immediately?

Yes.

then I'd say he has whatever right he thinks he has, up to legal constraints

I'm just debating buying him out right now.
That's the thing: he has legal rights to nothing
We haven't launched yet, so nobody's been paid yet. The code legally still belongs to their respective developers.

I think there should be an agreement for such investment, I mean certain fixed time, before which he/she cannot pull his/her money back
Is there any such agreement?

5:05 AM
just curious, but what process do you have in place to update your investors anyway?

@Ravan Nope because of volatility, @Chan-HoSuh Send a PM to the devs or me.
If he pulls funding, it's not the worst thing in the world. We have saved copies of all of our work.
The server is imaged daily exactly for that reason.

well, since you seem to want some outside perspective on this, I'd say from what you said, that this is a guy who is very frustrated with lack of feedback
he just wants more feedback than you are giving him

he gets an email for every single commit

so other than the obvious choices of dumping him and finding another investor or stonewalling him and making him more upset, you could arrange to update him more frequently and even give some presentations or whatever it is that floats his boat

stonewalling him sounds like a good idea.

5:14 AM
unless he's a developer, commit emails probably aren't gonna do it for him. Commit messages frequently don't do it for me or other developers, including the person who wrote the message!

He doesn't even understand Java.

anyway, my advice would be, try to understand things from his viewpoint and see if there's a solution in that direction. It doesn't sound like you've tried that yet

There is zero difference between the developer chat (which he wants) and the commit messages.

well, now you're thinking very much like a technical person, not a people person :)
some people like the chatting aspect, the human interaction

the developers chat is literally a dump for commit messages though.
85% of the chat are commit messages. The other 15% is general dev comments on using this method as opposed to that method (which he doesn't understand)

5:21 AM
oh I see, I thought "developer chat" was something more interactive

Nope.
Most development chatter takes place in the leaders' chat, which he has access to. (Because the developers like feedback)

has anyone actually chatted with this guy asking what he wants?

he wants:

- access to code base
- access to developers' chat
- [previously] root access to all servers

hehe, root access eh

yes.

5:33 AM
"previously", so you were able to dissuade him?

which is worrying because he pays for the servers, meaning he has recovery console access.
so technically he does have root.

generally speaking, when a guy is acting like this, it's because he doesn't trust you guys

I don't trust him either

aha, so it's mutual

I'm still worried he's going to grab the code and run.

5:35 AM
wonderful situation

(part of the reason why i don't want him seeing the code)
I have half a mind to move everything I can to my personal server and boot him from the project.

Only keep obfuscated code on the server :P

HAH
nothing here
@NathanOsman Keybase is awesome. I love it.

Yeah, it's pretty neat.

5:57 AM
George had a fun time this Halloween.
I dressed up as a #PHP programmer this year. I think I frightened a few people. Ended up with a lot of candy tho. https://t.co/4FCQPsTZCq
