woo, transparent title bars in unity:
Big Bang Theory is the best
@Mateo huh?
rgba works in the css files for the themes :)
forgive me father for i am shipwrecked
00:43
Hmm... It's almost 9:00 on a Saturday, the usual crowd shambles in... nods
you can use Amazon to hire cleaning services now
Hmm... Not sure if want.
I already have my neighbor, I pay her and she cooks a few meals and cleans my house but I don't really make a mess. Usually. Well, not much of one.
yay, my terminal looks awesome now ;)
Screenies @Mateo?
@Mateo new font?
00:54
LOL
Your terminal looks like mine.
Gimme a minute. I'm slow.
@Chan-HoSuh hm, interesting
I don't actually have a screenshot utility. :/ I'm installing one now.
I have no idea how to make it an inline image.
Paste the direct link by itself
01:01
Also, I don't go transparent - just a faded gray like worn out old-school monitor. It warms my heart.
nice
uh oh
I need to find a terminal Zork and then I'll be... Well, I won't be anything. I'll never play it but I'll be happy.
GNOME is missing textures
I like using this every once and awhile
01:04
Matrix?
and stare into the matrix ;P
Very Matrixy.
Do you have the screensaver?
you can install with cmatrix
Also, matrixy is now a word.
01:05
@KGIII definitely
Do I really want to install cmatrix? I mean, c'mon now.
it is command line, also a good screen switch - drop to tty and run it ;)
I am one of a select few who don't spell "definatly" or "defiantly"
:p
This could be a minute... I blame you @Mateo if something breaks.
Knowing Ubuntu, that isn't far-fetched
01:07
did it require anything for install?
Nope.
I thought all it did is throw letters in your terminal
it does want cmatrix-xfont...
Well how would it work without its font?
ah, also try the -l in tty
01:08
apparently the original idea behind The Matrix is that the AIs are using humans as cheap parallel processing units, rather than as an energy source
huh
Ugh. Why can't I play any flash videos?
Heh... With the cmatrix font it's nice in tty.
I'm gonna run that in public, at the library. I bet I get arrested.
Maybe I'll do it outside of the city hall building. Or the police station. I'm not home so I can get away with it.
I wanna see how Buffalo's finest cope. :D
Buffalo ... quiet place, right?
I have food coming shortly so I'll leave a laptop open with it running and see what the delivery person says.
Fairly quiet. It's a big city but not bad. I'm just visiting and met someone here and now we're dating so I'm still here. I'm over near the arena. It's nice here.
follow the white rabbit ;P
01:14
I'll let ya know if the delivery person says anything. Should be amusing. I'll crack it open in full TTY mode with the -l switch.
Text says he's coming up. Heh... BBIAM
-a is cool they all scroll different speeds
hmm, I just realized I should get another display
mmmn, yeah. I was thinking of getting a 40in
something like this: ebay.com/itm/…
although, I think tires for the car comes first this year
for watching movies? Or is that size helpful for doing work ... ?
I think they say the resolution is equivalent to having 4 1920x1080 monitors in a quad formation
01:22
my neck would hurt too much
and as long as those new ultrawide's
would probably have to set it back a bit...
I've used that kind of configuration (quad formation) before, I prefer to just have a couple wide ones lower
01:35
Well... Not nearly as interesting as I was hoping. "Neat screensaver."
lol
So I had a long conversation and was told about a LUG that meets tomorrow, I guess. I haven't checked. He has "geek friends."
being geeky nowadays is much cooler than it used to be
I'm nearly 60. I don't change. I do keep going in and out of fashion though. For a while, I was a 'hipster' it seems even though I'm not a huge fan of strange coffees and I don't wear skinny jeans. I'll be "hip" again before I'm dead, probably. I won't have even had to change my style of dress or my hairstyle.
well, hipster-ism is related, but not quite what I was talking about
01:54
No, I was off on a tangent. I thought I mentioned, yesterday, that I don't do "on topic" very well? :P
If I was geek before it was cool, does it make me a hipster?
Yup.
nah, might make you a neckbeard
Graybeard...

@Chan-HoSuh @Mateo I have UHD at 27 inches. This sweet.
I am looking at a 28 incher once I get another job.
02:03
@JourneymanGeek 4k = UHD?
Not exactly.
UHD is 3840x2160.
4K is 4096x2160.
It gets really confusing when you see advertisements for a "UHD 4K" product.
Thanks.
I don't game so, honestly, I'm pretty comfy with my 16:9 normal monitors. I don't watch television or anything so, I'm good there. I do watch some documentaries but I don't much care about quality.
@Serg yup...
I've got two HD monitors and they work well enough.
@KGIII UHD is the correct name for most '4k' displays
02:14
Yeah, my Nexus 6 shoots UHD, though they advertise it as 4K.
Thanks. I really should consider gaming again. I am way behind on things like GPU tech.
@NathanOsman oh. I upgraded to all the modern conveniences at once :p
I haven't gamed since Fallout 2. I bought Fallout Tactics and haven't gamed since. I looked at Fallout 3 and didn't buy it.
This is UHD, ips and factory colour calibrated
02:17
And well... UHD for gaming is crazy expensive, and there's little 2180p media out there.
You need a killer video card to drive a display that large.
@JourneymanGeek I have some on my YouTube channel :)
But then you need a killer Internet connection :P
02:37
980 ti for gaming and that barely does it.
For normal media.... 650 and up will do
How would that compare with a Radeon R9 270X? :P
02:58
@NathanOsman would probably smoke it unless it's DX12
There's apt-add-repository - why is there no apt-remove-repository? :/
shambles into the GUI to do it
03:13
a 980TI is pretty close to a current model titan (X?) in most workloads
If you have something wierd that needs a ton more texture memory but not much GPU power it may be different
03:45
boy, that was a frustrating two hours of messing with Scala in Eclipse
@JourneymanGeek The 270X does support DirectX 12.
04:02
Well. I knew RMS was radical but... wow.
04:19
what did RMS do?
I was at one of his talks earlier today.
So nothing really 'new' I guess.
is "radical" the right way to put it?
04:37
@NathanOsman: AMD GPUs for some reason are spectacularly better at DX12 rendering than DX11
it seems the calls from CPU to GPU are more efficient
so DX12 would improve performance if the bottleneck is the CPU GPU communication. It's not that the GPU is doing a better job
05:04
I think DirectX 12 gives the application developer more direct access to the card.
For some reason, it thinks I have 6 GB of video memory. I only have 2 GB.
WHOA.
lol
I've had the reverse happen sometimes
This thing really heats up the GPU.
The fans make noises I've never heard before almost as soon as I start it.
lol
It is a torture test
and very few cards can run it smoothly
It runs smoothly. It's just really, really loud.
Is 98° C too hot?
I have the Catalyst Control Center open on another display and it's showing the workload at 100%, the GPU at 1080 GHz, fan speed at 100%, and temperature at 98° C.
05:50
sounds like furmark
what res?
or did you just hit it with a stress test?
1080p with 2x MSAA.
lemme give that a run
I seem to top out at 71 degrees, and 60% fan speed at those settings, 99% core
85 fps avg
I was only getting about 30 fps.
You have much better cooling then.
06:44
@NathanOsman: quite plausible
Its a improved cooler for the GPU, and the case has pretty crazy ass airflow
@cl-netbox o/

Heh... There's a bug in 15.10 w/GParted. I was too late to be the first to report it. :( At least now I know it's not me.
in terminal, "sudo gparted" returns /usr/sbin/gpartedbin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgiomm-2.4.so.1: undefined symbol: _ZN4Glib11VariantTypeD1Ev Description: Ubuntu 15.10 Release: 15.10 Installed: 0.19.0-3build1 Candidate: 0.19.0-3build1 Version table: *** 0.19.0-3build1 0 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ wily/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Pretty drastic - doesn't open at all.
07:38
I'm gonna build it from source and see if if that helps. :D
Building from souce > snuggle time.
Nope. 'Twas fun... On that note. I'm going to shuffle off. G'night. :P

user136984
@Rinzwind: Really? What's buggy about it?
@ParanoidPanda well... want a full list? or just the highlights?
user136984
Highlights.
- upgrade ended up with an unusable system (grub bash minimal). UPGRADE assumed 15.10 as an EFI where I was not using EFI.
- desktop crashes every time I delete a file from the desktop
- deleting files does not send it to trash. dirs do get send to trash
- closing the lid has the system go into suspend even though the settings states to do nothing
- every boot has a 50% chance to be longer than 10 seconds. 30+ seconds even
and those are the bigger problems :=)
clicking a launcher icon when that program is active every so often crashes the program
user136984
What flavour are you using? Because I haven't noticed any of those on GNOME.
10:47
Unity of course :)
terdonny! :-)

@ParanoidPanda why the flag on this one? You should use your voting power on answers like this.

@fossfreedom: Voting power?
up vote/down vote
user136984
13:07
@fossfreedom: Oh right... But surely link-only answers should be flagged as low quality shouldn't they?
there is some vagaries of explanation in that answer - not great but enough to make this an answer of sorts. You could help out the poster here by making this a great answer with some of the stuff you commented on.
remember - "low quality" means that the answer is so beyond irretrievable it should be removed. A bad answer just needs a voting intention. A poor answer just needs a bit of editing.
@fossfreedom How about a duplication case?
flag with a custom explanation - also add a comment to the answer.
@fossfreedom Ok, Comments is subjected to at least 50 reputation :(

GortI have a 2013 Retina MacBook Pro, and I really want to install Debian on it. I have the know-how and have had at least three Debian systems before this. I am very knowledgable with the command-line and Linux's inner workings, and partitioning isn't an issue for me. So, I just have one question be...

I don't think so!
@Chan-HoSuh I especially like Terdon's comment
@RonnieMarlow off course it can!
Linux is just not the cause: bad manufacturing is!
I have never seen a battery explode, while running an operating system before in my life. But it could caused by the manufacture.
Good video, but aol.

No thanks :) I have a question for you sir, since your good at partitioning. I have a hard drive 500 gb. 5gb of ram. How should I set it up for day to day operation. Thanks.

@RonnieMarlow Ubuntu only?

@RonnieMarlow If you want a rule of thumb for your partitioning, read this for your swap, then use 10% of your drive for / and the rest for /home
League Of Legends Championship:
Hey, why no preview of gaming.youtube?
Alright I'll read the article and try to fix my partitioning for a permanent system. Let's just say I don't have swap on my system and let's say I have / directory of 450 and home I don't know the amount for home.
@RonnieMarlow I just told you: 10% for / and the rest to /home. No swap at all is not recommended... Better set the swappiness to 90 then!

I see it im reading it. :)
