1:07 AM
@jrg: this one's for you :)

1 hour later…

2:41 AM
The frequency is the same as small sattellites
I was warned not to stand in front of them because they would make me sterile
It's between VHF and UHF
but cool
@Seth

Oh cool, 150 MHz.

Oh you are there
brb
if you missed it :)

missed what?

I'm sorry I feel like I am sounding like an a-hole.. the about (tech specs) of the gotenna

I'm reading it now.

2:50 AM
Seems more like a VHF transmitter, from the ranges

I'm just trying to understand what, specifically, I am missing.
@NoTime Yes, yes it is.

> "...current FCC regulations don't enable us to store-and-forward messages..."
Lame.

It has to have lower range because omnidirectional

@NathanOsman They'd have to be storing messages on someone else's device, so I can see why they can't.

ok they are under estimating

2:53 AM
@NoTime Do they give a power output?
3.6 miles is a good average.

normal ranges for VHF are usually like 3-5k unless good power source
or 5-10k up to 20 on good days

really depends on the power output.

I mean if you had a direct power source you could do 100k I'd say

ehhh...

If you had HF you can hit across the world depending on weather
and power of course
antenna size etc
@ Seth 2w power out
thats what you asked right?

2:58 AM
They don't ship to Canada. That's the end of that.

@NathanOsman looks like CBC likes it though

@NoTime no way you can get 100k with 2 watts..
with that antenna at least.

@Seth right.. I'm sorry when I was talking ranges I was talking about a regular VHF radio not gotenna :)

ohh... lol.
now it makes sense.

I was trying to compare it
I talk too much though, and miss things when I do. I'm hard to understand sometimes
They said at 150m high perfect conditions you could get 40k (theoretically)

3:03 AM
@NoTime Heh - so there's hope then.

@NathanOsman I used to listen to a CBC broadcast on American National Public Radio
from CBC
jian ghomeshi
@Seth that last thing about being 150m elevation and 40k is written somewhere.. I just closed my tabs
oh the CBC article

yeah yeah, on a regular radio I'm sure you could.

they are saying for the gotenna

I heard a story of a repeater that got ~50 miles on 1 watt.
Which is roughly 100k I think.

yeah
10k about 5 miles

3:07 AM
@NoTime really?

yeah the article linked above

you're right o-O
I don't see that on the gotenna site though..

yeah I think that may be pre release info

My challenge for the evening. Rebuild one of the 2buntu web servers without any downtime.

you guys are all doing cool stuff
I'm lurking and reviewing, sometimes asking or answering questions

3:11 AM
We have three servers - one running nginx+uwsgi, one running PostgreSQL, and a third running Redis.
So far the nginx server seems to be getting utilized the most.
It has the least free memory anyhow.

@NathanOsman I'm looking through your profile
now your site

Which one?

(and 2buntu)
quick media

2buntu is much more up to date.
...and the entire blog engine is open source.

what is it written with?

3:14 AM
Python. It uses the Django web framework.

the __init__ is blank?

__init__.py is required in directories that modules are imported from.

Ok so basic (theory) would be.. Django is holding your library

You mean the articles?

you write scripts to access/interact that
I mean module library

3:18 AM
Django provides a set of modules that include an ORM (object relational mapper), process forms, route URLs, and render templates (the HTML that your browser gets).
The 2buntu blog simply imports the Django modules that it needs.

That seems cool. I am not going to understand all of it, but I think I get main idea.

If you're interested in learning more, I wrote a series of articles on the blog that provide an introduction to Django.
The first one is here.

I designed personal websites using <html> <h1>Stuff</></html>
in 1995 i believe
when I was 12 whenever that was.. 20 years ago
1994

Yeah, I started about when I was 12 too.
...back in the days of Netscape Navigator.

my friend had the gold beta
and you could move it from one computer to another :)
I used mosaic and opera as well
I didn't have internet for the next 5 or so years
after that
had to go to people's houses

3:23 AM
We didn't even have Internet at home until I was about 20 :P
I had to do everything offline or go to the local library.

yeah. I was near a university campus in 6-7th grade
so there were people with T1 even :)
but then I moved and almost no one had a computer, if a modem
but I was the guy that fixed people's stuff :)

Yup, I know the feeling.

when I knew DOS, and how to do stuff like setting interupts for SCSI drives..

"Halp! I can't find the Internet Explorer icon!"

heh
Dude I got a Dell!
Dude... you got a Dell... (wtf)

3:27 AM
lol

I used to absolutely despise Dell
and hated Packard Bells as well
Then HP came along.. I was wary. Dell acquired Alienware.. like hmmm.. now it's pretty much those 2.. or Lenovo

HP isn't that bad.

Packard was though

Their printers are terrible but their computers are alright.

Packard Bells were absolutely bad
Only reason I didn't like HP right away. I actually don't mind the printers :) only from working with like every model.

3:31 AM
Our current printer decided to just randomly stop printing black ink the other day.

99% computers were Dell, 99% printers were HP

I put in a brand new empty cartridge and it would happily print out completely blank pages.

Ok.. yes I don't like non business ones.

...and then a few days later it decided, "hey, let's start working again!" And so it did.

At least there is kinda support with hplip
although I had to set my printer static, because every time it switched IPs I had to reconfigure it

3:32 AM
Yup, everything in my house has a static IP address.
It's much easier that way.
(I have a NAS and I frequently SSH into my machines from outside.)

I don't have an outside IP address

How do you connect to the Internet then?

heh.. yeah I mean an IP address that I own.. its through ISP

Me too, but my router monitors the address and updates a DNS record whenever it changes. That lets me do 'ssh nathan@home.quickmediasolutions.com' from anywhere without memorizing an IP address.

You are hosting DNS?
@NathanOsman I gotta go.. sorry I don't want to stop this conversation.. but wife wants to watch a video

3:37 AM
Yes and no. I manage DNS for quickmediasolutions.com. Actually, home.quickmediasolutions.com is a CNAME for a domain on one of those dynamic DNS services.

ttyl

@NoTime I'll talk to you another time.

ok later

Bye!

3:51 AM
Hello!
Been a long time since I've popped in here.

Indeed!
How's life been @etsr?

Alright, alright.
I started using all sorts of Linux distros, ended up on OpenBSD after 50+ installs and a ruined spinning rust disk.
@jrg can confirm, I may be insane.
While I was gone I ended up with a gold medal. :P
What about you @Seth?
Oh wow, Mod status, I am behind the times. Congrats!

4:15 AM
@etsr Not much.. Having a lazy summer ;P
Been pretty hot here. At least, hot for here. Probably nothing compared to you Ohio guys ;)
@etsr Thanks :)
So, how's OpenBSD?

I like it, it's comfy.
Kind of buggy, but it's a challenge and that's what I've needed.
And not too hot in Ohio, we've been getting a lot of rain.
But I'm not in there now, hard to say. :P

Not in there meaning not in Ohio anymore? :/
@etsr Buggy is cool. I would run a development release if it weren't for the fact that I only have one machine and I need it relatively stable.

@Seth That's how I feel. It's only really buggy since it's built for servers more than clients, although I like to itnker.
tinker*

well I'm off to bed. Nice talking to you @etsr!

3 hours later…
Sadly, no.

@NathanOsman Whould you paid over $5000 on a bunkbed?

Nope.

look at it...
By Unknown.. propbly a sham
I want something like it.. Oh wait I do, and it is called my house.
@NathanOsman whould you trust something like this... amazon.com/Prepac-White-Floating-Desk-Storage/dp/B009I2AL8W

I'd never got both my widescreen monitors to fit on that desk :P

7:16 AM
fin?
So you have it?
@NathanOsman Can you find me a joke?

Sorry, I meant "fit".

Okay
I don't like widescreen... Unless it is big like 40"
@NathanOsman what do you think on office chairs like these? hermanmiller.com/products/seating/performance-work-chairs/…

I have no idea.
It's getting kind of late here. I better head to bed now.

@NathanOsman how much do you spend on a office chair?
Night than.

I've never bought an office chair :)

7:22 AM
Than what do you use?

Every office I've worked at took care of buying furniture for me.

for free?
I guess that is nice.

Anyway, goodnight.

night

what's up @Takkat

everything is in paradise state here @hbdgaf
<-- is sitting on the beach in southern France

awesome. wish i was in vegas, but i'm fine here.
well that's good. i added an external keyboard to my laptop to fix my Q key...

wish I could plug in externals to my elderly netbook here.
This stamp sized touchpad drives me crazy.

you'ld be amazed how quirkily common it is for your query to contain a quintessentially queer character like Q

can't remember when I typed a Q last time.

1:29 PM
try and ask a question
or say requirement

on request I will query that. ;)

@Takkat with you on that one. but it seems like no winning. it's either too small, so you have to use a stylus on the touchpad to not fatfinger it, or so astronomically large you reposition your cursor while typing

there always is that mouse I could plug in ... but mice and sand don't go well together,

you could use the andorid mouse app if you have a nexus laying about as well

no Nexus but a CMed Samsung should do as well...
... no - no connection to my toothless netbook,

1:32 PM
sure. it's just an android app over on google-play. it connects via wifi.
the flaw i see with it is that it doesn't pretend to be a bluetooth peripheral. it requires a local server app on your device.

<-- is searching...

seems like an interesting bit of code to fuzz from my end, but the installation base is probably small. one second, i'll get it for you
here's the blog article that pointed me to it nexus7.wonderhowto.com/how-to/…

steppschuh?

crap... looks like it got pulled from market

merde - it asks for a PC server app to install... 99,9% it's Windows-only

no it has a linux server iirc

WiFi mous install atm.

in other news, i'm making a transmissionbt desktop widget with some added features.

@hbdgaf \o/ it works - nice :)
<-- likes the scroll wheel

i didn't write it, but i did think it was interesting when i saw it
glad you found it useful.

the adding of features for a desktop widget is so i have an appindicator to toggle the widget and i can do something like this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/499990/how-to-control-a-torrent-file-to-be-downloaded-item-by-item/500007#500007
all in a transparent/semi-transparent widget with scrolling blobs on the right side of the screen in an always-on-bottom window.

1:45 PM
this was typed from the android
(but edited form the real keyboard) ;)

i found it looking for a solution for my Q key. i didn't decide that i like the keyboard on android for my laptop, but i did decide i would store it away in my brain for someone else's benefit.

how do you access indicator applets from keyboard?

@hbdgaf good you did.

in 14.04 Unity

@reversiblean write in a shortcut key. i'm not aware of a good way to get at them from the keyboard. i'm not really targeting i3 users or anything with the app. it's more an app that is an answer to a question. that has worked well for me in that past

1:50 PM
if the indicator applet had no keyboard shortcut support I believe you may not be able to access it's menu. But I never dug into that, really.

yup to set up a keyboard shortcut, you should at least know the command. I can't find it anywhere

i answered that already askubuntu.com/questions/166464/…
mir may break it, but it works for now

Q: Possible to "electronically disconnect" the fingerprint sensor on my laptop? // X41 Thinkpad

nutty about nattyI'd like to fully disable the fingerprint sensor on my IBM X41 Thinkpad. The first place to look which comes to mind is BIOS: I will double-check on my next reboot and update the question accordingly, but as far as I remember there is no BIOS option to fully disable the fingerprint sensor: only t...

help appreciated!

@nuttyaboutnatty does the device support suspend at all? If not then there is little hope.

the devices name (according to lsusb) appears to be "SGS Thomson Microelectronics Fingerprint Reader"
no idea if it supports suspend or not
here's a thread on a similar issue, which trails off with an answer which is not quite clear (and reliable) to me: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1030845

2:04 PM
you could just remove the fingerprint board...

Says: "... Go to /dev/bus/usb/<bus number> remove the device number corresp to the Fingerprint reader ... "

this made me giggle quite a bit if you feel like spending 20 minutes on pure happy youtube.com/watch?v=aCv10_WvGxo

@Takkat you mean, open-heart surgery on my thinkpad and physically (try to) remove the fingerprint hardware ?

@nuttyaboutnatty it's more like cosmetic surgery.
support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-60073 should get you to the hardware maintenance manual.

@Takkat possibly a solution; but first I'd like to try a software / command-line-based solution. What do you think of ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1030845 ? How to check if the device supports suspend?

2:10 PM
@nuttyaboutnatty it is trial and error I guess. Note down whatever you do on your software heart surgery to be able to undo if anything went wrong.

@Takkat if I understand that thread correctly, it instructs to delete the files 001 and 002 (in my case)
regarding noting down steps in order to being able to undo,
trying to backup those files with copy-and-paste,
returns a "can't copy special file" error
a quick google of which returned only few results

@nuttyaboutnatty This may only unwantedly disable a port but not suspend a single device on that port.

good. spam needs more hurdles

Now I just need to figure out how to have it move messages to the junk folder when they are positively identified by the spam filter.
dovecot-sieve apparently is the package I need.

careful about that, i hear there might be code execution bugs in common configs... see immunity posts on their non-official blog

This Question seems off-topic as not for Ubuntu (Asked for Linux mint)

@hbdgaf I'll give'er a go, I don't keep anything important on this netbook

@Mateo i suspect i found the problem see the comments
no need to test. it's documented here
people ask ubuntu questions on UL and Mint questions on AU. feeling trolled

it was a mint question?

the one on UL was an ubuntu or ubu+debian question. the one on AU was a mint question, hence irritation
@Mateo - directed at the question pair not you
in other news, i got a new keyboard

4:53 PM
@hbdgaf ok cool

Haha, I've always heard that song on the radio and I never knew he actually says that.

waiting on both parts to resolve, but it's not worth any more of my headspace.... and moves along.

What kind of keyboard?

the cheap kind

nice, my cardboard came in

4:54 PM
Not going to make your fingers comfortable.

i'm not going to respond to that

google cardboard that is:

nice

so, it is interesting. the part I like best is you can view your own 360 pictures you took on it, I'll have to look and see if you can pull 3ds pictures and view them on here, that would be cool.

5:33 PM
I've tried it without the cardboard.
If you can cross your eyes, you can still perceive the 3D effect.

ouch, did that once on the old psp, hmm, wonder if cardboard would fit on it, would try and play MGS again, they had some special vr thing in japan only
aw, cardboard is too big ;)
can't hit buttons

We might use this to calculate "similar articles" to the one currently being read on our blog.

5:52 PM
oh, speaking of old games, found my old Castlevania games:
hm, sideways...

GNOME 3.13 looks different. @_@

@jokerdino different good? do you have a screen?

@Mateo it looks different but good-good.
i think most changes actually come from gtk

oh, did they ditch the grey theme?

6:03 PM
yeah, its very white now

ew, still going for the rounded gradient thing...

you mean the edges?

the buttons and decoration

yeah well, it sticks out somewhat
and gedit looks barebones

and those are built in, so can you change to get a numix look on them?

6:06 PM
i suppose yes.

I find it strange that since getting rid of the menus, they are opting for larger buttons, at least it is a all in one deal though

lol too true
they do it pretty well to hid it somewhere deep

1 hour later…
7:25 PM
@jokerdino eew... that just looks abrasive to my eyes

i think there's a darker variant of the theme
i like white personally but this one's just too white

7:42 PM
@jokerdino my eyeeeeeees! ;_;

i would invert that contrast. save the planet and all

hey @hbdgaf
how goes the new project? looks like you have a good target audience based on the star wall ;)

I know right?
I set up using the icon in the applet, and it looks like it needs to be simplified to be useful as an applet icon. it's still great as a toggle/app icon though. I'll let you know when it sort of works. I have the applet, config, and main window launching from that template i made a while ago. I also have the window acting transparent and loading in about the same space as occupied by notify-osd if you got a screen-full. Now it's on to the widgets and functional bits

hm, maybe taking out a set of lines and fill in the center for a small version
what is a applet icon normally, 32, 24, smallest 16px?

I'm looking at just theoraclemachine.net/sites/default/files/images/… for the small version
in other news...
@Mateo looks about like that size. i'm on a high-res screen though.

8:46 PM
not perfect, but, something like this maybe:

that works
dammit... you're too fast on the icons, now i have to right more code not to be the weak link

just kind of a "take out the complex bits" version

@Mateo i get it. it does look good.

@hbdgaf that was interesting
he needed a giant set of stairs to tumble down

i know... it's vine-ing going viral right now.
started about two days ago
and now i have an 80s song in my head... youtube.com/watch?v=-kw3ziKi3aU ... darn vines
alternately, i wonder what he used to make the controls for the extending and contracting slinky arms. would be nice to see it on github

@hbdgaf here this might get it out of your head:
might not be better...

i'm not playing that... on purpose.

but you might forget the other song ;)
