Should have done this a loooong time ago.

anyone else here experience degrading experience when having a lot of tabs open on firefox for several hours? My computer was running so slow that I could barely type into the terminal. I typed "top" and noticed firefox processw as consuming 16.9 Memory. I ran kill -9 pid of firefox and it killed firefox and suddenly my computer was responsive again.

Q: Ubuntu WiFi icon as feedback indicator?

The DOuG TrainerOn startup, I've noticed two animations in the WiFi icon for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS: 1) Back and forth, or up and down, repeating, or 2) Outward, from the bottom point upward to the wider top arc, repeating. 2 questions Are the two patterns indicating different connection stages in its connection...

4:09 AM
@Andrew The "386" refers to the Intel 80386 chip, which was the first Intel microprocessor to support a 32-bit instruction set.
"amd64" refers to the AMD K8 processor, which was the first to implement a 64-bit instruction set backwards compatible with the i386 instruction set.
Interestingly, AMD licensed the i386 instruction set from Intel and Intel licensed the amd64 instruction set from AMD.
It's a perfect example of "mutually assured destruction". Neither one can revoke their license to the other without assuring their own demise.

lol, at first I thought this guy was calling names and then I realized the user who asked the question was "tatty fish pickle". What a name choice.
How does one use gsettings to edit schemas with a (was it fixed path? or something similar)?

how do I find a linux compatible wifi usb adaptor at my local electronics shop?
how do I check if it is ubuntu compatible ?
does ubuntu have the drivers for this kind of stuff build in?

It has more to do with the chipset than the manufacturer.

or do I need an adaptor with installable linux drivers

Speaking broadly here - most adapters will work out of the box on Linux.

plug and play you mean?

6:00 AM
Yes.

i actually bought one cheap one and couldnt get it working so I want to make sure next time

@JoshuaRobison: Those nano dongles tend to be ralink chips and usually work out of the box

its like russian roulette
"ralink"?
I should look for "ralink"

I don't have any USB wireless adapters here. Everything either has a built in chip or it's connected via ethernet.

wish I could take my computer to the electric shop and try a couple out

Actually, one exception - I bought a small USB adapter for my Raspberry Pi.

That might further complicate things.

Sometimes the module that ships in the kernel doesn't work as well as the one provided by the vendor due to licensing issues. One of our computers has a Realtek chip that is quite unreliable with the kernel module that is included in the Ubuntu kernel. I always have to grab the source code from Realtek and compile it myself. Then it works better.

6:25 AM
@NathanOsman yes I believe discourse is in rails
just curious if they used bootstrap css framework with that one, couldn't remember "discourse" was the name of it

Yes, Discourse is a Rails application. No, they don't use Bootstrap at all. It's custom CSS.
But it isn't managed by Stack Exchange at all. A couple of the main developers used to work for Stack Exchange.

Yup, its Jeff Atwood's post SE project

Jeff Atwood and Sam Saffron.

you need a load of ram to run it properly

This is true.

Yeah but you could build some really cool applications with ruby on rails very quickly, and run it with postgresql and nginx and using ruby 2, and you would have good performance.

First incounter - i was working with firefox(tested later on chrome and ubuntu in general.), when the system froze. This is a new laptop - no hardware issues. Also put in a HDD with Win8 on it, tested the touchpad and no freeze. Also under Windows i used PassMark to stress test it, for about an hour, to see if it would freeze. No errors. @Nick Here's a dump of gst-inspect from the LiveCD paste.ubuntu.com/8008117 That should answer your question, it a little over-verbosely.
You can also select to install the MP3 codec during installation but it's not on the CD for legal reasons.

2:28 PM
@jokerdino ah, yes, that is what I meant.
@JourneymanGeek they've actually been working on that, they have deployment time down and say it will run pretty good on 1GB of RAM now.

@Seth: thats still a bit on the heavier side for me.

Oli
That's just the cost of doing business when you optimise for heavy loads.

2:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek you'd run a webserver (even if it is a forum) on less than a GB of ram?

@Seth: actually, yeah. My VPS is ~256mb, though I run a shared db

Raspi runs at half that and gets used as a mini-server all the time...

@Oli too verbose, but answers it thanks :p

If I install ubuntu on a flash drive, will it work correctly on all systems to use it as a portable system to use in cases where I don't trust the installed system?(Friends house that I know knows nothing about computers etc)

if you do it right (unetbootin for persistance, rufus or unetbootin otherwise)

Im a bit worried about the GPU, some don't work out of the box

@hbdgaf Yes, some guy has tested riptide on 1.7.x and as I can see there it has a Gold rating. appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=28103 The truth is, there was an issue on 1.6 and 1.5 when I first tested those, where you had to actually change the API sound option on the config file. That is no longer the problem.

@LuisAlvarado yeah ;) however, the patches in 1.7 broke some other stuff. I thought I had 1.7 earlier, but I guess when I blew out my ppas on dist-upgrade I backed it out and never put it back in

Oli
@LuisAlvarado If you need to install that much stuff, you should only be giving it a gold rating. I thought Platinum was supposed to be reserved for thing that work out of the box (or very close to)

3:56 PM
@Oli there is a large confusion related to the stuff that needs to be installed (for a specific version of Windows) and what doesn't. In that particular case I am mentioning that it does not all has to be installed, that is just my boy scout preparation kit

Oli
Ah fair enough.

The truth is, Wine does a fantastic job at creating this environment for the apps
but then you have dll differences and other components that are native to Windows XP, Windows 7 and others
for example, when you install Windows 7, and an application detects you are using 7, it "assumes" you already have .net installed

Definitely true. then you also have to deal with winetricks that only work on specific architectures on specific OS versions too... so it's a hell of a thing that ANY of it works AT ALL
2

don't remember the version that comes with 7 but it has .net and others like that. So wine gives you the environment, then you have to fill it with the components that "should" be there from the start for that specific windows version. That also includes what @hbdgaf just said.

don't get me started on retro games that expect a specific version of quartz.dll either... >.>

4:00 PM
After several years you start noticing patterns, apps that need to work in 7 also need all components that 7 brings when installed, apps that need the mscoree.dll version 1.21.31.2312#!$@!$@!^#$^$# Beta, needed in the games folder. Then you think, is this an issue also in Windows. You install windows and then the app just to see that it also has the issue. So wine gives a pretty good environment, but the rest has to be fill by us
@hbdgaf OMG yes
that issue is even bigger than all other dll

there should be an iterative winetrick that holds them all, so you can winetrick configure - try_the_next_quartz and run in a loop until it works then kill wine and disable the trick
i wonder why nobody has done that...
anyway, progress on the transmission desktop widget. it's still not pretty, but you can set transparency and sticky now. on to color and the one feature that actually prompted me making it - auto-priority setting for linear downloads of... erm series of lecture torrents github.com/aking1012/torrentWidget

Q: Xubuntu thinks it's Kubuntu

user3915402After I installed KDE my Xubuntu started to think it's Kubuntu. The software updater buggers me that security updates are no longer provided for Kubuntu 13.10 and wants me to update to 14.04. I don't want Kubuntu; I want Xubuntu. How to get the right identity back?
