Q: network interface counters not working?

ToBeFrankI just built a router and installed it with Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS. It has two NICs in it, one for the internal network and one for the external (p3p1) network. I'd like to monitor external interface usage, but the ifconfig counters are always 0. "ip -s link ls p3p1" shows zero for all counters ...

Hey guys, I have a sound problem with PulseAudio in VLC. when I set audio output module to Automatic or PulseAudio, sound goes on off when I skipping through playback
but when I set it to Alsa, audio is okay

why can't you set it to alsa for always?

Pulse is default one right?
in Ubuntu?

Q: Would creating a Q&A question to cover specific 14.04 sound issues be okay here?

impinballI was looking at the numerous cases in a search of people having sound issues, especially with 14.04, and I was wondering if I could create a little Q&A FAQ (community wiki) about it? Many of these questions happens to be variations of a common complaint about an ALSA bug I've filed, where these...

@fossfreedom This coming from the nation who decided to get rid of the subjunctive and has bastardized the English language more than any other (including the Yanks)!
I had a Scottish friend try to convince me that Where has Dave went is correct English ffs! :P

ah well ... we tend just to speak loudly and expect others to understand

@fossfreedom Nah, that's the Americans.

And you guys killed whom!
Where are you from @foss? Which dialect do you speak?

Oli

@terdon In fairness we've had longer to do it.

@Oli Heh, true, true.

southern part of britain - so hampshire/berkshire dialect - and for anybody who doesnt understand the geographic parts of england - vaguely posh - but not trying too hard english dialect

I got a more important q for @fossfreedom when are you going to get that 543 rep to get 100k?

@fossfreedom At least Southern accents tend to be comprehensible. It took me about a year of living there before I could parse Yorkshire. I still can't understand Geordie but then, who can?

@fossfreedom been there! :=)

I find Geordie a lot easier then Scouse.

@Oli Geordie and Glasgow are the two I've never been able to make heads or tails of.
Haven't really heard Scouse though, that sounds hard too.

@terdon best comedians - lots of jokes - you have to laugh along even if you havent a clue what they are saying

and in case someone states to use a BIOS password: those are weak too since all of those have defaults passwords that always work... — Rinzwind 14 mins ago
@Rinzwind seriously? All BIOSes have default passwords that will work whatever you have set your own password to?

@terdon as far as I know: yes

But, but, but...

So all AM BIA (or whatever is the plural of BIOS) will have the same one?

yes
AMI BIOS Backdoor Passwords:
AMI BIOS PASSWORD HEWITT RAND
AMI?SW AMI_SW LKWPETER CONDO

4:40 PM
PASSWORD!?

so there are 8 for AMI
@terdon yes you read that correctly
heck the "awkward" bios has "awkward" as password
want to see something weird?
check the link and see "lkwpeter" in more than one mobo as a password?! who was that dude?
hmmm @terdon fell of your chair?

@Rinzwind I was trying to find luke peter :)

4:55 PM
Is it just me or is it with Apple's PCs the bang for buck ratio is way off.
@Rinzwind are you there.

Um, Apple's bang for buck ratio has always been way off.

@Seth totally agreed. Oh, you get Mac OS X with it... Yea that is nice since it is nicer than Windows, but Honesty I would rather be using Linux than that high price junk.
By junk I mean the OS, since it is so lockdown.
@Seth don't you like it when Apple or Microsoft rip off our features. EX their upcoming update, will feature the headers bars from Gnome Shell.

meh, everyone borrows from everyone. That is how the industry works.

Yea but can you name something that we rip off of Apple or M$?

If you think about it, Unity is very similar to both OSX and Windows 7.
That's a good thing, because the general design has been proven to work.

5:08 PM
Yea... The only thing that I can think of is the look and feel ie like kde
I like Gnome, Unity, ... Over their uniqueness, and not over their look or feel... I don't like seeing every DE with the same layout.

@Seth Dunno about that. I just had a look at what you get for 2k$ and it seems pretty damn decent:
2.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.4GHz
16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
256GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
Intel Iris Pro Graphics

Intel HD 5000
That is not wrooth the money.

@Andrew ?

@terdon hah, I can get that on a PC for like half the price.

It have Intel HD 5000 graptics

5:11 PM
@Seth Can you? With a 256GB SSD?

And decent hardware? The mac chassis is excellent, as is all the associated hardware. The only ones thta come close AFAIK in the PC world are lenovo.

That is way crapper and you get more:shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y50-uhd

@Andrew Yeah, that's $750.00!

You can get 60 dollars off or so when you tell them you don't want the windows lenl...
@terdon what is $750.00?

5:14 PM
@Andrew No you don't. You get half the RAM and no SSD. Not comparable.
@Andrew The SSD you linked to above.

For 1.6K

I have so far overwritten .conf files in Debian with .conf files from Ubuntu in /...

@Andrew Well, yeah. And the mac one was for 400$ more. That's less than the cost of either the RAM or the SSD.

seems I spoke too soon. I can get cheaper, but not quite half price.

For what version of the mac?

5:15 PM
Got a link for that one though @terdon?

For a laptop?

In terms of bang for buck, macs tend to be great. They just don't have many low end options and are not customizable enough for me.

Never seen a Mac that comes with 16GB of ram default.

Yea

@Seth All the mac book pros do now. You can't even modify that in the shop.

@terdon not true, just checked.

4GB 1600MHz memory

Seriously, I had a choice of Dell vs Mac for a laptop I was not paying for. I finally went for Dell for other reasons but in terms of bang per buck, macs won hands down.

@Seth I think we have a apple fanboy here.

@Andrew Not at all actually. I just like to hate them for the stuff they get wrong, not right.

5:17 PM
@terdon can you do the math do show are why they are creaper?

@Seth Huh? Where? The 15inch ones at least only have 16g and I don't see how I can change that.

13
For a laptop

Ah, OK. Yes, I was looking at the 15 ones.

@terdon maybe by the time you get to the 2k category, but looking at the lower end macbook pro, I'm not paying 1300 bucks for a dual core i5, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD.

5:19 PM
@Andrew Can you do the math to show they're more expensive? You made a claim, the onus is on you to prove it right.

@seth totally agreed.... And I would never paid that much for a laptop since you can't use all of the hardware since it will over heat specially with the thinners ones.

@terdon yeah, doesn't look like you can change that in the 15inch models.

@Seth Oh, the low end is ridiculous. No argument there. The quality is still probably worth it (seriously, cheap laptops are really bad no matter what specs they have) but I would never dish out that kind of money for that kind of power.

That is what we were just saying.... ;)

@Andrew Not the good ones. That's the point. My housemate has a 5 or 6 year old macbook pro that is still serving as the house computer, the one we play music/movies on today.

5:20 PM
The 2k looks ok compared to other models for 2k (I can still get more from dell, for e.g.) but otherwise you can get more for that money.

@Seth don't forgot about the ram is put on the motherboard so you can never upgrade without changing the motherboard.

Bang for buck, the best macs are excellent.

@terdon yea right maybe you want a Mac Os run computer.

@Seth I know but not quite. Seriously, after having owned a thinkpad and having seen what good hardware means, you never go back. The mac HW is brilliant.
@Andrew Not at all. I don't much like OSX though it has some good things about it.

No arguing there, they have great hardware. But it isn't worth it until you are already shelling out 2k.

5:22 PM
@terdon Intel HD graphics are not meant for gaming. and don't forget about you can't upgrade it without change out the APU.

@Seth No. But then, I've gotten used to having my job pay for my laptops since they're a tool so... :)

ooh nice ;)

Can't we all agreed that MAC OS x is better than Windows?

@Andrew Of course not! First of all, no serious gamer would buy a laptop in the first place and they sure as hell would not buy a mac. Who buys macs for gaming?
2

For that money I want a better video card

5:23 PM
@terdon tru dat

And I want to upgarde it latter down the road.

serious gamers build their systems

@Andrew It is a very good OS. No two ways about that. Don't forget it is actually a Unix and even used to be POSIX (which Linux isn't).

I don't have a problem with Apple products (except their mobile offerings), but I really don't like the company itself.

So it doesn't become osluate.

5:24 PM
@Andrew Then don't buy a laptop.

I don't like the company either Seth.

@Seth Neither do I. I don't like the whole walled garden thing. Hate it with a passion actually. But their products are good. Whether we like it or not.

yep. I still don't believe any of their products (except maybe the higher end macbook pro) are worth the price tag however.

All powerful laptops have this issure called overheating. The best one I have hear not truly have the issure is a Lenovo Y50.

@Andrew that's why gamers get desktops with liquid cooling.
Most gamers.

5:26 PM
@Seth tottaly agreed but they are hard to coustomize and upgrade... As getting driver for a nvidea card would be hard.

@Andrew Which is not a powerful laptop by any stretch of the term. In fact, it has pretty much the same specs as my > 3-year old Dell.

@Andrew laptops are harder to: upgrade, repair, customize, etc.

yeah, period.

@Seth yea but Laptop Copanies use the tag as Gaming as a gimack.... How are you going to get the full perforace if the hardware is thortting. to pervent damage.

At least most accept RAM boots though.

5:28 PM
@Andrew You don't. That's why you don't buy a laptop if you want a gaming machine.

@Braiam yea but some are eazyer, and I don't like ram being put direcly on the motherboard.
@terdon agreed.

@Andrew where in the world you think the RAM is being put on?

@terdon You just get better spics if you go with a desktop in geranal.

@Braiam I think he means integrated with the motherboard. Obviously all RAM is on the motherboard somewhere.

@seth yea I do mean it.
I think they might of change it (Apple) but the SSD(s) are too.
@Seth I have 32GiB of Ram in my computer 8x4 but 2 of them isn't connect or anyway with the hardware... It is just in the case.

5:32 PM
@Andrew Not only that. It is also a matter of size, it is much easier to keep a larger space cool.
@Andrew Wha? There are integrated ram chips?

@terdon Yea.... I hate powerful 'Netbooks' or 'Ultrabooks'.

Those aren't computers, they're glorified tablets.

@terdon yea you didn't know that also...

What computer is this?

@terdon they look nice but I can't even upgrade the RAM even IF I wanted too... not because of the CPU doesn't support it or there is not enough shots... but no shots at all.
Apple Laptops... They might of change it thou.

5:35 PM
@Andrew I see. But, again, why in the world would you buy one of those? I never understood why people who don't move around much get laptops.

It has been a few years since I less check... Oops the motherboard want out... All of the data is loss.

Most laptops are upgradeable in terms of RAM and HDD. On the other hand, I've hand some parts of my desktop for more than 10 years.
The floppy drive for example :)

@terdon Desktops win in every way.... If you need something more portable than go for a Intel Nuc or any other mini PC
Don't forget about upgrading the monitor on a laptop...
The only thing that I like about laptops more and that way I have a netbook is that they have long bettery life... Desktop = 2 secs if that.

Desktop = 0.

Lol no it is more like 0.5... It take time for the power to be use up thou... I guess How much Power A... you have and how powerful your computer is.
@terdon you can play with your utrabook all that you want and even say "ge-ge-goo-goo" like a baby but if you want to replace a part like the ram becuase it is like want out, or even worst misfunntioning since there is no way to replace it without replacing the motherboard than you will need a lot of money...
Is anyone on?

5:43 PM
I am not defending ultrabooks, I don't even know why they exist.

A ultrabooks is like a Macbook air or a Razer Blade.

I know. And I dislike them.

@terdon what is the point when they don't have a cooling system or not of a good one.... I would rather it be thinker be upgradable and have a better colling system.
exteral fans don't work as good as interal... unless you take the buttom colver off of the laptop if one exist.

quick question: i'm trying to extract some text using grep. is this possible?

@rlemon Define extract. You mean print only that text? Yes, use -o

5:52 PM
ooo
df | grep someExpression
atm it is matching the lines I want - but I want to get info off those lines. I'll play around with -o flag
huzzah!
thanks o/

@rlemon Welcome :)

@terdon I can't stand it when people call UEFI BIOS or when People Call SSD HDD... IT is so annoying... Or when people as like a stupid question like 'what is sudo?' that is a bad question when you can easily search it on Google and find it...
A better one would be is 'I don't really understand the concept of sudo, and I read all of the Wikipedia artical on it. So can you simply it to the point of me understanding it or could you explain it better to me in more depth. since I am not good in IT stuff'.
Do any one agreed with me?

@Andrew Umm... don't start on the UEFI BIOS thing. It is called that by more people than you might expect: intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/…

Yea...

6:10 PM
one more small question (for now) - (have pitty on me, I'm a javascript developer ;) ) lol how do I remove the new lines?

@rlemon From?

sorry, the output of df | grep -o someExpression
sda
sdb
sdc
sdn

Something like df | grep -o foo | sed 's/\n//'

cool. will look up sed

No, hang on, I'm an idiot

6:14 PM
all the examples I found did fun stuff while outputting to a file.

sed can't do that, use tr or perl.
df | grep -o sd. | tr $'\n' ' '

I'm trying to build up a command, then execute it. but I need to know where my usbs are plugged in

df | grep -o sd. | perl -pe 's/\n/ /'
@rlemon Then don't parse df. Start from the beginning :)

I have seen comments like 'what is sudo' or what is Linux' on a Youtube video by someone at the time had like 300k or less Subscribers saying that he most let his public MineCraft sever go since what he said 'they sever host is running MineCraft as Root on Linux... When it doesn't need to. '
And I tell them Spell right or go home there where using that mobile nonsence and I can't stand it for the life for me. And I also tell them can't you span some time with your friend Google and read the Wikipedia page on it, and quit being lazy... And I post it on alot of the identical comments or very smaller. And I get flagged out and block by the channel owner from it and say that I wasn't being nice to people.

unless Ubuntu already has some nifty tool that would allow me to load files to all usb devices plugged in in a speedy fashion

6:15 PM
Oh I guess we are on a differnet topic.

BOOM. awesome edit done. askubuntu.com/posts/508249/revisions

tl;dr - need to put files on N number of usb drives at once. but trying to make it as autonomous as possible. because I need to do this for hundreds of drives.

@Andrew Well, what did you expect? You were being aggressive and rude.

@terdon No....
@terdon I put Please....
I annoy me so much why do people leave identical comments. And comment before they read some of them to make sure they are not doing it.

@rlemon are your USBs always mounted in /media ?
@Andrew In any case, I suggest you don't attack people on their spelling. You know how much trouble you have with that.

6:18 PM
@terdon they appear to be

@terdon +1

@rlemon if not than do sudo mkdir /media/usb than sudo mount /dev/sba1 /media/usb

@rlemon why don't you just write crap tons entries in the fstab?

because... I don't know how? :P

or maybe umount rules

6:19 PM
if i'm being honest

@terdon don't you get anny when people spell words like 'realz' 'kidz'.... 4 you or 2 you... for U

@Andrew Yes, very.
@rlemon And any reason you want the device names and not the mount points?

@terdon why don't they lean how to type and get upto 60 WPM like me. They try but say it is too hard....

well I was going to dd the crap on - but the more I think about it the more that sounds silly.
rsync?
damn, I'm going down the wrong path

@Andrew I don't know. Why don't you? (I think you meant learn).
@rlemon Sounds like a good time to post a question...

6:21 PM
@terdon Yea I did

@rlemon ok, lets step back a moment, what's the problem you are trying to solve?

5 mins ago, by rlemon
tl;dr - need to put files on N number of usb drives at once. but trying to make it as autonomous as possible. because I need to do this for hundreds of drives.

@terdon I am going let you deal with help with him

@Andrew all I'm saying is that people in grass houses shouldn't stow thrones.

s/grass/glass/

6:22 PM
@terdon LOL

@rlemon and ruin a perfectly good pun?

@Braiam hello, btw :)

Old joke about a tribe who kept thrones in their attics. In their grass huts. They fell.
Hence the punchline above.

ahh. yea. I didn't get that. my bad.

@terdon I am 14 and I must deal with like my former Science teacher referring the motherboard to a SSD or a HDD... Since it look like a flash drive when it is open.
OR I think how she got the term....

6:24 PM
@Andrew I know, been there. Then I realized that these people knew a hell of a lot more than I did about most things and decided they might deserve the benefit of the doubt.

@Alvar o/

can we close this as unclear/off topic, askubuntu.com/q/508249/10698

Anyway, @rlemon assuming that your USBs are always mounted on /media, you could do: mount | grep '/media' | awk '{print $3}' | while read drive; do cp /path/to/from "$drive"/ & done

okay give me a few minutes to read through all of that
I REALLY need to spend more time on linux :/

mount lists mounted file systems, so you grep for /media, then print the 3rd field which should be the mount point. You then use a while loop to save that as $drive and launch the cp in the background (&) so that multiple ones can be run at once.

6:28 PM
I should get you guys/gals to sanity check my other scripts one of these days

fish, Y U no have bang bang?!?

@terdon Yea right I did ask a question 'Where in Coal does the energy comes from?' and she she 'between the comical bounds where it is store'.... That is wrong because if it was then the module would just decay away to get to a lower energy state.... The right answer would be 'It takes less energy to make them decay, to lose their lower energy state to a higher one. Which basically make more energy in a simply term.'

also, while i'm thinking about it (not related to my issue at hand), is there any sane reason that dd'ing a image of a full system to a sd card would corrupt a mysql database?

was the database on one of the disks?

sudo dd if=~/img of=/dev/sdb bs=1M

6:30 PM
thanks seth

the img was taken by doing the reverse just targeting the source sd card
1/20 copies mysql doesn't launch because db is corrupt

@Andrew Ummm, no she's right. Sorry, look up exothermic reactions.

@rlemon dd isn't smart, if the SD card was too big or not big enough things could get messy.

not a huge issue, it gets caught in QA.

@rlemon Probably just a corrupt transfer then.

6:31 PM
@Seth all sd cards should be equal

emphasis on the should part.

@terdon but the energy is not there... She was using the context of it is always there and you just need to let the energy free from there.... It is not that simple.
@terdon the energy is there when it decays only since it must go to a higher energy state.

@Andrew Weeell... It kind of is. The idea is that breaking these bonds releases energy. The bonds keep the molecules in a stable state which uses less energy so in a way, they are actually storing it.
@rlemon Might also have been a hickup in the connection to the card which dd did not notice, attempted to write, failed, and continued resulting in a corrupt file. I think that's plausible anyway.

@terdon yea... But the energy isn't there until it decays

6:34 PM
maybe.
in any case, like I said i'm not too worried - it gets caught in QA
just curious

@Andrew If so, where does it come from when it decays?

@terdon one... let me think how to explain it....

@andrew no >:) gaming ;)

@terdon If Partitals/or atoms can go to a lower energy state they will... If the bounds break than they go to back to their original energy state. If it take less energy to take them back to their original energy state than that kinda of gives us the illusion of it makes energy.

@Andrew Yes and no. They are in a low energy state (stable state) when they form bonds. Breaking these bonds takes energy but since once they're broken, the atoms are now in a higher energy state (that's not really a thing but never mind) and energy is released.

6:39 PM
@terdon I am I right or Am I highly misunderstanding something....

That energy was essentially stored in the bonds.
For example, your body stores its energy in a molecule called ATP. This has certain bonds that are broken and this releases energy that powers most of the chemical reactions in your body.

@terdon than why don't the bonds break since it has more energy than the outside of them?

@Andrew Because they are stable. It takes energy to break them. Once they are broken, then they release energy as the atoms switch to a different configuration. There are bonds that release energy when broken, others that release it when formed.
The real gritty details of this go into quantum mechanics and I don't understand them anywhere near well enough to explain. On the macroscopic (well, kinda, atomic anyway) level what we see is energy released when certain bonds are broken.

@Braiam Got a minute to help this poor soul? askubuntu.com/questions/507815/libpcap-install-errors

@terdon Yea, but I still don't understand it... If they are stable than why is the energy is store in the bounds can you explain it to me? And I know some stuff about GM.

6:45 PM
@Andrew I think your main issue is what you understand by store. For example, if I keep a rock a meter above the ground, a certain amount of kinetic energy can be said to be stored in the stone. That energy will be released when I let it fall. The energy stored in the bonds is stored in a similar way.

@terdon Yea I think I readly knew that....

Energy is not something you can count or point a finger at, it is basically the ability to do work (in the physical sense). So no, there are no buckets of stored energy in chemical bonds, however, energy is released when some of them are broken.
Therefore, since when you destroy the bond, energy is released, energy can be said to have been stored in the bond.

@terdon I know.... Energy is not a real thing. It is only a thing to discrale something.

@Seth "but it is not going to be installed" means that the package isn't available, which isn't surprising considering he's using EOL

@terdon I did watch this youtube.com/watch?v=AAmqeHCFq_8 and got the from... It made since over the reason for it... But I know Scishow is Bias to Anti GMO and site bad research to ...
