maybe so... but if it were current it would contain exactly what he wants.

@hbdgaf ??
He wants to know the executable files installed by a package, irrespective of whether the package is installed or not (I think)

it's just a database of commands. what if you temporarily modified the search path to not include anything?

12:21 AM
@hbdgaf what do you mean? My answers parse the package info, the list of files. Anyway, I found the best one, I had forgotten this tool and the author used to be active on U&L. By far the simplest (only for installed packages though):
 dlocate -lsbin gnome-terminal

Q: Strip specific option from a response in dhclient

F30I aim to prohibit dhclient from updating my NTP config with servers received via DHCP, as it is the default on Debian/Ubuntu. However, my DHCP server ignores the list of requested options (from the request setting) and its answers always contain an NTP server. So I want to remove the option befo...

12:40 AM
@terdon I like your answer. I'm just pointing out another way to go about solving the problem.
I wasn't calling you a monster for sure ;)

@hbdgaf and I'm all ears! I'm not arguing, I just haven't understood your suggestion/point
@hbdgaf and that didn't even occur to me, I was assuming that was to the effect of "Bam! I made my point!"
Don't worry, no ruffled feathers here

Yeah, pretty much the point. So the idea was, if there's a database of command to package mappings already built-in...why not use it.

@hbdgaf ah, because there are far better tools.
And cause I have no clue how that mapping works :)
I guess it queries the apt db somehow but I don't know how. That might be a god idea though. Great, now I'll spend another half hour trying to find out :)

Fair enough. It was pointed out to me some time ago that apt-file was sub-optimal because it requires you to download index files etc. Where the other option would only require a script to take a command and launch it in a stripped down shell with no search path to return the package name.

@terdon command not found is an static database :/

12:44 AM
@Braiam so command found but package not installed?

wait, found /usr/sbin/update-command-not-found

@hbdgaf hmm, no, apt-file seems to work with no internet connection so it must query the local db.

apparently command-not-found is like apt-file

that's not what i meant at all. i meant that it's not a built-in and requires initial sync passed base install and update... whereas the command not found database IS initially present, but may require updates

Ah, OK.
But the db won't have the list of executables, only those which would end up in your path presumably.
There's a canonical question for "AAaa can't boot weird text black screen" right?

12:50 AM
@terdon how is that not optimal? i want to know what package provides this command seems like exactly what they wanted...

@hbdgaf yes indeed, but some packages install various executable tools that (presumably) won't be listed there cause they're not in the path. The various udev stuff like /lib/udev/collect for example. If they all get listed and the info can be extracted from the db, that would indeed be great!

yeah, that's fair. i think most people asking for executable listings though only want things in the search path though

Doubt it'll get better than dlocate -lsbin gnome-terminal though. That's super simple.

Sure. I just added an alternative answer askubuntu.com/a/435214/5768
nevermind. the OP is going in the opposite direction, i scanned the question and interpreted the answer to find other possibles. when i re-read the question my answer didn't fit.

Q: Can we improve the path from ubuntu.com to here?

terdonIn the time I've spent here, I've noticed a clear difference between AU and the other SE sites I frequent. There seem to be far more bad questions (that show no research effort, don't explain anything about what they need etc) here than in the other sites. I suspect that this is largely because s...

@Braiam Hm, do you think if I forked the Community page, fixed the AU reference and submitted a pull they'd accept it? Or do they only want more "official" people to do that?

@AskUbuntuMeta I love "IE users go home you're drunk"
god love @Oli

1:28 AM
@Seth do you guys have access to stats showing how many users come here through Canonical's pages? Perhaps the spike that occurred after the sites were linked?

I do, but it's non disclosable.
but a lot come that way.

we've talked about this before. a lot of the poor crap that winds up on-site comes from canonical kicking baseline support to here to reduce their snr
i stopped answering questions about the same time canonical started pimping AU.

1:49 AM
@Seth sorry, was away. Could you disclose a percentage? Not if it's an issue, this is just idle curiosity, but are we talking 80% or 10% or what?
@hbdgaf yeah, how did that go down? I was not active here then but I remember seeing posts about it on meta.so. Did the community agree to this?

@terdon Sorry, can't now. If this changes I'll let you know.

@Seth no problem, as I said idle curiosity. "Lots" will have to do :)

@terdon Trying to branch a package off launchpad bzr branch lp:package-name essentially.

Oh damn, no idea. I read 'bzip'

@Seth dunno, really

Q: How much traffic comes to us from non-search engines sources?

BraiamKinda in the same line of this question, exactly how much traffic comes to us from other sources? This will give us a very specific view of how can we improve our stop-gap before users ask questions without the "minimum research effort" that the SE model ask for any of us.

Q: Would it be beneficial to have answerers to explain how they got there answers?

YES! 3k, I can close vote!

wohoo!
@Braiam Let me try.
Says no gpg key found. Guess I'll need to make another of those >.<
The one I used to sing the CoC doesn't count?

@Seth ssh != gpg ;)
the problem is ssh pubkey

2:10 AM
@Braiam gpg: error reading key: public key not found

err... wtf

yeeah.
guess I'll just start all over bzr wise.

exactly what you are doing?

@Braiam I was trying to branch the community website, but I got the error above --^

ok, let me try...

I thought I had configured bzr already.. Guess I need to do it again.

@Braiam Email? I didn't get a new one, so the old one?
.ssh/id_rsa.pub doesn't exist so.

yeah that one.

Q: RSA vs. DSA for SSH authentication keys

jrdiokoWhen generating SSH authentication keys on a Unix/Linux system with ssh-keygen, you're given the choice of creating a RSA or DSA key pair (using -t type). What is the difference between RSA and DSA keys? What would lead someone to choose one over the other?

debian defaults to rsa... or maybe I did

I don't have an email from when I set this up before, just the email from signing the CoC. Will that SSH key work?

@Seth err, mine always have a comment about user@host, apparently is so I can remember from where they come from

2:39 AM
I have no idea what you're talking about now.

yeah

alright, lemme see if I can configure that.

@Seth since geography gets in the way of that cuppa, have some (deserved) useless internet points instead.

haha, thanks anyway :)
@Braiam So I branched the site, but I can't find a single reference to AU anyway. Just a bunch of PHP files. I have no idea where they're pulling that page from :-/

@Seth you had asked me if I found the AU references I would have told you...

3:20 AM
hm.
ok
@Braiam doesn't help much :-/

Am I missing something or should this not be closed? It seems neither a bug (we don't know enough yet) nor off topic.

@terdon "trusty version of Ubuntu Touch" I guess is what's getting people.

@Seth That's on-topic though right? Ubuntu touch is anyway

However I think that's useful content despite trusty (and IMO has nothing to do with trusty anyway).
@terdon Trusty hasn't been released yet. Normally we close pre-release questions, but it's getting close to release and my message above.

@terdon I didn't understood what was wrong with the question not even after reading the "accepted" answer

3:29 AM
Ah, "trusty" right, so the touch versions mirror the main ones?

@terdon now it does, yes.
didn't used to.

I actually read that as an adjective, as in I called my trusty sidekick and rode off!

@Braiam The 2012 version of the Nexus 7 has been deprecated, doesn't work with the latest release.
@terdon ah. lol.
Code names can get confusing sometimes ;)

Ooh boy, we're going to have fun with this one: askubuntu.com/users/258678/may-decastro

@Seth common, can someone write an straighforward answer once in a while instead of a dump!

3:31 AM
She posted another Q yesterday saying: I need to write a tutorial on this but don't know the first thing about it, what should I do?

I know >.>

@Seth can you undelete Takkat comment? askubuntu.com/q/434890/169736

@Braiam I've come to the (maybe premature) conclusion that the AU page isn't included in the "Community Site" unless they're hiding it in the PHP somewhere, although my scans haven't been able to detect it.
yep.
Why'd you guys close it? Yeah the answer is in the other question, but people searching for a similar problem aren't going to look at "How do I install Ubuntu in a VM". It's a distinct, although similar, problem.

@Seth I know we have an css rule...

@Braiam Yeah, I'm still trying to find it..

mostly, yes.
This is why you need a descriptive summary.
ah, I see now.
Still no need.

Well, that was quick:
> Thank you for reviewing 20 close votes today; come back in 20 hours to continue reviewing
I don't think I've seen this before, is it AU specific? I'm sure I've done more than that in one sitting on SU

@terdon You might be allowed more on SU. SO allows 40, but a review limit is standard on all sites.

@Seth OK, must be higher on SU then.

A good way to find out is see how many close votes you're allowed in a day.
The limit is usually just under that.

3:43 AM
Nope, my bad. They just tend to be harder calls there I guess so I never made it through 20 on a single queue.
SU has the same limit.

:)

> You may cast up to 24 close votes per day (50 on Stack Overflow).

24

SO is just... SO

Yeah, just read that. Damn, I must have maxed out before, I remember review bonanzas on SU last year.
No! That's only for close votes, not reviews. I often vote to leave things open on SU, that must be it.

3:48 AM
reviews are always limited to 20
SO has 20 for suggested edits and 40 for close votes and 20 for everything else

Aha!
       <section class="entry-content">
		    <?php the_content(); ?>
	    </section> <!-- end article section -->

?

<?php the_content(); ?> :)

Yep!

Found where it's coming from have you?

3:50 AM
Now for figuring the next bit.

and the_content is?

@terdon I think so.
@Braiam A PHP function/method.

@Seth let me put that thing on a server and see what it does

I'm afraid I'm going to have to resort to parsing ls output
I can't remember the better way..

@terdon Welcome to 3K+ users list. :-)

3:56 AM
@AvinashRaj :)
I can cast close votes!

yes..:-)

that'll be really good for the site actually, we need more close voters :)

How to check if a specific version of an app is available in repos?

apt-cache policy package
it shows all the versions of a particular package available in the repositories.

5:11 AM
@terdon
r u there.

5:29 AM
@AvinashRaj yes, but not for very long.

@terdon if we already set the su root password then we don't worry about purging sudo.Am i correct?

?
Purging? As in sudo -k?

0
A: Can sudo be reinstalled after being removed?

Avinash RajIf you already set the root user account password by this command sudo passwd root then you don't worry about purging sudo.Just login into your root account and then install sudo, su apt-get install sudo

it works for me. :-)

@AvinashRaj So does your first answer which is much better. Why would you need to purge sudo? Who suggested purging it? And why did you post a second answer instead of just adding extra info to your original one?

question is about purging sudo.Here a single user may post many answers for a single question.,

5:38 AM
Yes, but only if they are significantly different, otherwise it is just tricking the system for more votes. Especially since there already is an accepted answer. .
I would just add a section to my 1st answer, explaining how to activate root login and then how to use su to reinstall sudo.

see this question, a single user posted so many answers for a single question

Q: What Application Indicators are available?

user8592I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on one of my systems and I am using the Unity interface. Unity is working quite well so far but I really miss panel applets for net speed, cpu temp, and system monitor. These applets are useful for viewing quick info. Unlike 10.10, there is no other way to get this info...

your 1st answer?where?

@AvinashRaj yes, and that is 1) a horrible question, asking for lists is never good and 2) each answer is completely different and adds another entry to that horrible list.

@terdon

@AvinashRaj I meant your first answer

if i were you, then

5:42 AM
@AvinashRaj yes, that's what I meant
Anyway I'm not a mod or even a high rep user here. Do whatever you prefer. Personally, I think it's better to have few, comprehensive answers and adding extra answers just adds clutter and helps the Q become CW for no reason.

i have some doubt, in my second one so i added it as an seperate answer..

If you really want to post an su answer, at least explain how to activate root login first and what su is.
And you have explained how to do it, sorry, missed it

In any case, it is really late here (closer to very early) and I'm off to bed. You might want to test your 1st answer there. There should be no reason to lose internet when you chroot and I doubt any of the bind commands are needed either. Not for installing sudo, they would be needed for things like installing grub.
@AvinashRaj ???????? And I'm far below both of you. What do you mean? How is speed relevant?

@terdon but the visited days shows 145 how it's changed to 135 days.In my prof page.

@fossfreedom paranoid?
Why are you Angry?

@AdityaPatil yes - why do you think otherwise?

what's the border between pure programming questions and on topic programming question?

its a fuzzy border - generally - if you are using ubuntu to compile stuff - on topic. If its a general "what does this C++ thing mean" that is Stack Overflow territory
however - I said "fuzzy" - if the pure development instructions include core ubuntu stuff like QML then probably on-topic

Q: Is there a way to get a new identicon as profile picture

souravcI really like the identicon as profile pictures. When I am going to change my profile picture it is only showing the old one. I got a few new identicons in past but forgot how they were changed. Now I am stuck and have no clue, how to get a new identicon? Or they just get changed periodically?

is that possible to change the default identicon? how?

Q: Recommending upgrade or dist-upgrade

saiarcot895I've seen many times where users do or write apt-get upgrade, but not apt-get dist-upgrade, which, according to the man page, automatically handles dependency conflicts and installs any new needed packages automatically. This might get rid of a few dependency problem questions from ever coming up...

@Braiam I'm also overtake you in this

@AdityaPatil I preferred it when I was higher up. Put it back.

BTW the list is same upto fossfreedom.
wait a minute.The days are not correct yet.

@AvinashRaj meh, that query is flawed since it counts one question of mine that was migrated here, my first answer on AU was about 7 days after :P

ohhh
it will calculated from the 1st upvote you got.

@Braiam tsk whatever you come up with you will beat me >:D
@Oli agreed :D I propose a difficulty curve to be included. the longer ago the more it should weigh :=D

@Rinzwind huh? you want me to pull how much people actually voted?

@Braiam I voted for you :=D
(my prev. comment seems to lack a "never" before "beat"

Oli
@AvinashRaj I forgot to comment on this earlier... Be careful who you boast about that to as it's likely that some of these people contributed to your reputation. You wouldn't want them to stop voting for you now, would you?

you mean some one frequently put upvotes on my answers.
@Oli
If yes, then i don't want that kind of reputations.Please revert it back.

@AvinashRaj happens all the time :=D The system will catch it and restore it. So no worries :)

3:45 PM
but i didn't upvoted frequently for any users

same with downvotes :D you post a comment on a website and all of a sudden all kinds of downvotes appear _O-

Oli
@AvinashRaj Yeah. The top 20% of your reputation is from just 8 people. I'm not saying that's in any way improper, just that if you annoyed one of those people by saying, for instance "haha, I'm beating you", you might get fewer updates in the future.

oh that's a lot :D
unless those 8 people are all from chat _O-
then it makes sense

did you check my upvotes?

@Oli O_O

Oli
3:48 PM
In fairness, a lot of people will have similar vote profiles... Some people vote a lot more than others and some people post a lot more than others. There's likely that those two groups will intersect more often than the people who don't vote much with the people who don't post much... If that makes any sense.

@Oli stats doesn't make sense most of the time, so don't feel bad :P

@Braiam ooh, yuck!
This is just getting harder and harder lol.

Man, it takes a lot of patience to leave polite messages to new users. I do, but it gets harder:
"I can not boot my ubuntu after I installed another ubuntu": put yourself in our position, would you have understood this line? What Ubuntu did you install over which one? How did you install it? Do you maybe mean Linux and not Ubuntu? When do you get that error message? Please explain your problem clearly, we can't read your mind. — terdon 6 mins ago

i was checking if i received any response for the comment I left the other day. Left me shaking my head.

@Seth I did. I tend to avoid downvoting 1rep users cause they have no idea what's going on and often take it the wrong way. I did vote to close though.
@jokerdino which one?

Hi and welcome to Ask Ubuntu. It would be helpful if you could supply us some more information. You can start with linking us to the specs of the laptop you bought. I saw a review that talks about "slowest cursor movement settings, the cursor is still difficult to land on a specific point". If you could confirm the specific issue, we can get from there. Good luck with Ubuntu! — jokerdino Mar 10 at 7:47
Thank you for responding jokerdino. If you have read a review you know as much as I do. Setting system preferences is not the problem. Buying more expensive computers is not a solution. More expensive computers just have more stuff I don't understand. See my profile if it is still there. I use internet and I use e-mail. If I am blocked out of those it is nearly impossible to exist in this world. I used Ubuntu for 6 years on older and even more primitive Asus boxes and had no trouble. I am not using any program I wasn't using before. I am using no fancy hardware. I am cut off here. More info? — user255928 Mar 10 at 13:33
