Q: Why this strange editing of my reply?

PyrophorusIt's a question to muru who edited this answer yesterday. At first, I made a suggestion in a comment, and next the OP replied it was a solution. I copy/pasted the working suggestion to make it ans answer and added this little header in it: "Turned into an answer to improve the stats". This to te...

Q: Not a Ubuntu question, but a Linux query in general: MS-DOS like OS for Linux?

monsieurbreakyourpcI'm looking for a Linux OS that runs fully through the terminal, kind of like MS-DOS. I'm using a 100 Mb device that I intend to use for only basic functions like transfer files from various drives and stuff. Sorry if I'm vague or making no sense, Linux is a whole new thing to me, I'm three day...

> Not a Ubuntu question...
Well...... Close than
@hbdgaf Sudo is the D.

PEOPLE THAT USE DROPBOX: See, if your account has been hacked:
^ Note it is stated that, that is just a 'teaser' - to prove he actually hacked Dropbox. So, your account might not be listed there.
Alternatively you can use the Mega Sync Client: Linux, Mac and Windows.

8:18 AM
Dropbox reply:
> Recent news articles claiming that Dropbox was hacked aren’t true. Your stuff is safe. The usernames and passwords referenced in these articles were stolen from unrelated services, not Dropbox. Attackers then used these stolen credentials to try to log in to sites across the internet, including Dropbox. We have measures in place to detect suspicious login activity and we automatically reset passwords when it happens.

Attacks like these are one of the reasons why we strongly encourage users not to reuse passwords across services. For an added layer of security, we always recommend enablin

@blade19899 i know i know

yeah - because my brain is so capable of remembering PINs and passwords and I do not trust any password service I chose different ones for each and everything and I forced their renewal every 2 weeks.

@Takkat For important accounts, i use strong passwords 26 letters and diggits... try to brute force that
Minor account just a random password

Brute force in my case is Alzheimer's...
My bank card PIN is 4 digits only... I should be worried.

@Takkat We should all be worried..
I use Mega cause I know on there end they got everything secure.

8:32 AM
Oh - my login password to my computer can't be 26 letters... it takes too long to type... so anybody who gets into my account will have access to all and everything.
Security will have holes all and everywhere...

@Takkat My pc neither. Mail, Mega and others I will come up with a secure and un-brutable password.

yeah I do that too - but it's a pain to maintain that.

You would not take your pc out in the big bad world... So, mine has a simpl0e passwrod
@Takkat True. Keepassx?

sometimes a feeling creeps in saying that if all were open and unencrypted it may be non-manageable for criminals to find sensible content amongst all that data-waste.

@Takkat According to Snowden, encryption doesn't stop the NSA.
And they manage all that data pretty well....

8:38 AM
I heard that the NSA especially searches for encrypted content, or anonymizers to better find interesting data.

@Takkat Snowden said they get all the DATA, It's up to the annalist to choose what they want to search for. Some annalist want encrypted, others don't.

the one thing that worries me more is that my credit card credentials appear in a list of FRESH CC CRACKS - that would be a real menace to my real life.

@Takkat That would be hell.
I don't have a creditcard. Not rich enough :)

there are so many shops with leaking security. sighs

@Takkat True. For starters, they should stop using Windows.
Many times, I have been surprised on how easy it is to hack it.

8:45 AM
<-- dreams of an application that resets his account each time he draws out a bit
or even better if $BALANCE < 0 then $BALANCE *= -1 ;)

@Takkat I'll remember that when I'm working on my login page(Custom CMS. EuroCMS)
Seriously hope i'm not gonna get hacked.

Actually I seriously hope I don't find out that I was already been hacked...
some years ago I sold my mobile phone on eBay being confident that a factory reset will erase all my private data - how wrong I was.

9:00 AM
@Takkat I would be pissed. Trash my room, laptop, cloths, kitchen, and say allot of creative words, if i found out Ihad been hacked ages ago..
@Takkat Lol... Thats terrible..

some weirdo reading all my private letters to all my secret acquaintances ;)

@Takkat ;)

horror!

I bet
You think this is good enough to keep most out: github.com/blade1989/EuroCMS/blob/master/admin/admin.php
It's not even nightly stage, just mucking about

no idea, I never made an excursion to web dev. Too lazy (or too busy if you like).

9:06 AM
@Takkat To bad. It's my second project(First is the frontend of my website). trying to write a backend for my website... and maybe for others..
EuroBytes - Your video/text tutorial site - Ignore the fact that it took me ages to write it, and I'm actually proud..

@blade19899 looks great to my layman's eyes!!!

@Takkat Yaaaaay, so proud of me right now!!! :D

<.. back to work

.. Same here ...

How to create fake/imaginary network connection (wired or wireless)?
something like pdf-creater creates imaginary printing device port, face cd/dvd drive can be created.
I want to create fake connection and connect with it so-that Software Center feel that pc is connected and "install" button available for this purpose!
something like virtual port?

10:35 AM
oh - almost missed my AU birthday. Thank you Yearling-badge for the reminder :)

11:24 AM
Anyone know of a good reminder app for Ubuntu?
The funny thing is, with my internet, I really am still waiting :P
@blade19899 What's your theme?
For your desktop, that is
It's Numix, right?

@RPiAwesomeness: eh, I tend to use google keep
Works where chrome does, and on my phone

@JourneymanGeek Google Keep?

Ah! Thanks!
I don't have a phone, but that looks pretty good :)
Then again, do I really want Google knowing what I think? :D

Q: strange network hangs

toptncI have a linux home server. It is a Asrock ION330, with Nvidia Chipset, running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS I has been working flawlessly during years, but since June it has been suffering some kind of strange network hangs. Logged in a remote console everything seems to be ok, but suddenly everything lo...

I recently came across the gnu screen... I am wondering ... is it still useful with tab-capable shells like terminator / guake now available ... is it still useful ... if so in what way ?

Oli
1:26 PM
@user3197452 It's useful if you're working remotely on a bad connection. You can reconnect to an active session.
Similarly if you want to run something (interactively) but don't (or can't) neccessarily guarantee you'll keep the terminal open.

2:05 PM
Welp. I did it. I have transfered my blog to the new domain...jeepers
Now I gotta figure out a new logo and stuff

@RPiAwesomeness Let me see, let me see.

The new blog?

Yeah, or anything

Wanna compare it with mine,

2:08 PM
@blade19899 Yours is definitely better :P

see, if i can get even better

Mine is just a wordpress-hosted one

@RPiAwesomeness Took me tears tho xD

sudodblog.wordpress.com

@RPiAwesomeness Ah.

2:09 PM
:P

You can't learn anything with wordpress
@RPiAwesomeness Nice. And that's the problem... IMHO.

@blade19899 Well, you can, but you need lots of people
@blade19899 ??
Also, Metro: Last Light is a lot creepier than I thought it was when I first saw mention of it

@RPiAwesomeness Sorry boss man walk by my desk

@Oli Ah ! That makes sense ! especially the second one ... I can play music in one screen using mpv :D
Hi any xubuntu users here ?

2:12 PM
Hiding windows and pulling up spreadsheets are we :)
@user3197452 @hbdgaf Is one

@hbdgaf Hi :)

Website should be about content. If i see all those fancy website. It just distract me from the content .
KISS: Keep. It. Simple. Stupid.
Thats what i think of when designing

@blade19899 Yeah, I definitely prefer a good, clean website where I have to click to find stuff as opposed to one where everything is right there in my face
@blade19899 What do you think of mine blog?
Like I said, I need to get a new logo

@RPiAwesomeness Real pretty and disignyy. But, thats the problem. IMO, needs a simpler design...
@RPiAwesomeness To the GIMP and SVG you go

@blade19899 I know. Issue is that I can't find any I like that are free

2:15 PM
I got stuck with the xfce login screen ... when I close the lid the laptop goes into a locked up state and when I do login I get the login again and after the second time of successful login the monitor goes off ... ( I am suspecting sleep mode ) and the worst part is nothing wakes the system from this state ... I have to force reset my system :/ as a result I am unable to close my lid at all ;( any suggestions ?

@blade19899 Exactly :)
@user3197452 Have you asked a question on the main site?

Thats Mine! ^

@blade19899 ik! Very nice, though maybe a tad bright
And, since I don't self-host, I can't do any of my own HTML/CSS

@Rpinot nill now ! Is this appropriate for a question ?

@user3197452 Yeah

2:17 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Thats why i never installed a CMS.

You might want to search the site first, just in case someone does it.

You lose some control

@blade19899 I may eventually get a free host, who knows
@blade19899 What do you use?

@RPiAwesomeness A guy from my old internship wanted to help me get in to web developing, so he gave me the domain and server for free.... I have no idea what i use... Free stuff apparently

@blade19899 Hoooo, nice

2:20 PM
@RPiAwesomeness It's a bit dated tho. One of the reasons why i didn't install a CMS, is cause the baked in php was outdated.... like allot

@blade19899 Still, a free domain+server

@RPiAwesomeness True... Free is always the best.... In the Linux community..

@blade19899 It is :)

lol
@blade19899 Yeah, those plugins are only for self-hosted wp sites :P

2:30 PM
Awh

Yeah
Thanks anyways

^ Didn't even read it - skimmed it - but there you go :D

@blade19899 You ever played Metro: Last Light?
Holy crap! I posted something yesterday and it already has 75 views!
What? I did not think I had that many readers...
Oooh, never mind. My entire blog had 75 views. But still

Q: mount command over existing drive, then deleted

Samuel NicholsonSo I had a directory sitting on /dev/sdb1 /media/SHARE I then accidentally did mount /dev/sdb1 /media/server/BackupDrive (I meant to use /dev/sdc1) I then did: rm -rf /media/server/BackupDrive It appears as if everything that sat on /media/SHARE before was also completely deleted? Is this...

Is there a good tutorial or book I could refer a beginner ( knows bash / vi / mounting etc ) to learn and explore more about linux ?
The end goal is to learn more about the linux as an os ... ( aka the advanced stuff ... )
and use it effectively !

5:10 PM
hi @Seth

1 hour later…
6:14 PM
@jokerdino feels left out

hi @Rinzwind

hey! @jokerdino :=)

heard the oranjes lost out to icelands

yeah

:'(

6:16 PM
seems there is discource in the dutch team
and again it is Huntelaar that seems to be the main problem

ah, something about penalties?

don't know about that. Whenever Hunterlaar gets to play with Van Persie both seem to ignore each other. Huntelaar is mosttimes on the bench due to Van Persie being 1st choice and Hunterlaar believes Van Persie is doing crap at Manchester so he should be 1st choice.
During the Polish EC Hunterlaar was a non-teamplayer also.

apart from these two, are there any other credible striker options for y'all?

Sure :D Holland has sooooooooooooo many good players :D But VP -IS- the best if he gets to play his game. Not a lot of players that are better than him in the whole world.
I doubt there are more than 2 better strikers than him.

lol I see that both these players are already 30-ish

6:22 PM
yeah

plus robben and de jong aren't young either

So is Sneijder (he is 30).
and our "young" dutch players just lost 5-4 to Portugal and are not goign to the EC.

I don't know who the next powerhouse would be but it's definitely not England :P

Germany is going to own the next 8, 12 years.
The are playing like Holland did in the 70s.

yeah, the one thing I hate about them is they are always running

6:32 PM
Ill be back. time for some food :-D

cya

7:09 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Yes. In Ubuntu of course. But never finished it. I find codes more fun than Gaming :/

@Mateo um...
major broken PC in 3, 2, 1...

@Whaaaaaat yeah... so. lets close it. I'm not sure how to respond at this point

> sudo apt-get install alien

sudo alien package.pkg.tar.xz

It will ask you root password and once it's process you will get you deb folder.
That is just hilarious!

sigh
@Mateo No, suggest he install Pacman / Arch instead

LMAO
Starred it xD

7:13 PM
It's a valid technological question, and I see no good close option.
(except for dupe)

I found a dupe to get the latest chromium...

Closed it as a dupe.

I saw that. However, this question is "How do I install an Arch package on Ubuntu?"

Just tar.xz is an archive. You extract it.

@Whaaaaaat which probably won't work with chromium, or a lot of packages

7:14 PM
^-- Exactly.

THere was a how to extract X Q somewhere right?

@Whaaaaaat's strange is that he doesn't want to install a custom repo.

he allready knows how to extract, he even said:

It's not a security risk.

@Mateo When I extract chromium-38.0.2125.101-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz it contains etc, usr folders and .INSTALL, .PKGINFO, .MTREE files. It's close to a deb package — kenn 13 mins ago
EXACTLY the same, Right??(sarcasm)

7:17 PM
umm...
okay.
sudo cp /home/$USER/Downloads/chromium-38.0.2125.101-1-i686/* /
sudo rm -rf /.INSTALL /.PKGINFO /.MTREE
see what that does >:D

that might be fun to do to a virtual machine, but at least you can undo a .deb or ppa to some extent

VMs are the testing grounds of destruction.
on an unrelated note, what do you guys think about 0AD?

7:36 PM
@Whaaaaaat Awesome game. But, its Alpha!

@blade19899 As in? What is the gameplay like?

Thats the only reason why i haven't played 90 hours on it yet
@Whaaaaaat Lag. sometimes

Turnbased? RPG?

And on some maps

Fight game? Build?

7:37 PM
RTS
Age of empires kind of
Only oad is better
And pretier

i might look at it.

New version came out yesterday
Thats the intro
Night, Night!
Ow yeah, I made a Q/A here on Ubuntu about oad:

A: How do I Install 0 A.D.?

blade19899To install the Latest 0 A.D. on Ubuntu Utopic, Trusty and Precise, add its official ppa: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wfg/0ad sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install 0ad The above ppa, supports only the following versions of Ubuntu: Utopic (14.10), Trusty (14.04), Precise (12.04). Note: In th...

@user3197452 - you had an xubuntu question or something?
@user3197452 I haven't seen that... When I close my screen it's set to lock the screen, but not to logout.
@Mateo you could do it in a snap with lxc if you already have the lxc requisites up and running.

9:19 PM
yeah, just not sure what the problem was, when a deb was already available

9:30 PM
@blade19899 You were commenting on my blog theme being too busy, what do you think of this one?

9:54 PM
@Mateo is the AUR package ahead of the debian one version wise?

Q: How to revive (get new and better answer to) an older but not outdated question that has old outdated answers?

cipricusThere are questions that are still interesting but have only old outdated answers, that give the impression that there must be some other solutions already there, but that are not posted anymore on that question because it was answered and an old answer was set as definitive. If I ask them they ...
