00:00
lol
funny thing? Both my cables are yellow
00:14
tho, thankfully not this yellow cable
@hbdgaf I have a 300 Watt PSU right now and no video card. I figured I'd get a 700 Watt before throwing a video card in.
@RPiAwesomeness: could you give me the output for lsusb? also, is this a text only install?
@JourneymanGeek Yes, text only. Vanilla Arch...lsusb coming
All of it, or just the edimax one?
just the edimax one
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 7392:7011 Edimax Technology Co., Ltd EW-7811Un 802.11n Wireless Adapter (Realtek RTL8180CUB (or CUS - not sure))
I have a really crappy screen
@RPiAwesomeness ssh ftw?
00:34
I can't. No WiFI access on the Pi
that's what I'm trying to get up right now
realtek is usually supported on the kernel
so... tried just setting up /etc/networks?
No...how would I do that?
@RPiAwesomeness Probably.
That's the install command.. so I don't know what you mean by "key presses" afterward.
Kdoke. Waiting for reply...
Like entering 'Y' or pressing Enter
hmm
mind if I start from the start?
00:44
@RPiAwesomeness Oh, I think it's set to assume yes.. Why?
does the device show up in ifconfig?
@JourneymanGeek I don't think it does. I'm going to try the solution here: raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/12946/…
and get back to him...BRB
@RPiAwesomeness Just try the command. After looking it up, you might have to press y but it should work.
I can help get it set up from there, I've done this before.
(granted, it wasn't on Arch.. but it should be similar.)
@Seth It's doing somethin currently...
LNK light is flashing...
Okay. Are you installing via Ethernet?
00:54
Yeah. Can't believe I didn't think of this, but I could hook the Pi up via Ethernet and then SSH in. DUH!!! facepalm
Oh, so you aren't going to set up wireless after all?
@Seth Yes I am, but the setup for the wireless will be a lot easier :P
About 50% now
Oh cool.
23 mins ago, by Braiam
@RPiAwesomeness ssh ftw?
sighs
:)
precisely... /me FACEPALM
01:04
How we doing now @RPiAwesomeness ?
@Seth Downloaded...and then this:
DKMS: add completed.

@RPiAwesomeness you need the kernel sources..
Hmm.
I'm not familiar with pacman..
:P This is perturbing
01:16
can a mod close and delete this Q? askubuntu.com/q/381804/169736
Anyone know how to search the repository in Arch?
@RPiAwesomeness That's not going to fix the problem.
That's the driver...
Could I install it by USB?
You could, but that wouldn't fix it.
01:19
It wouldn't give me WiFi capabilities?
@RPiAwesomeness did you installed the linux-headers package?
I don't think so....
Would I use this? 'dkms autoinstall' and blacklist rt8192cu?
... err.. let's go step by step right?
first install the headers and dkms package
pacman -S abs base-devel dkms linux-headers
Which option? There are 25...
option? aren't you ssh'ing? copy paste the stuff

you pressed Y right?
Was I supposed to? I was waiting for a response. Doing now
This might take a while.
80Kb/s connection is very slow
01:43
I have to go for now, but I should be back later today @rpi
If you need help setting the next part up
I have a puzzle for anyone who is interested.
The MD5 hash of '123' is computed in Python as follows:
nathan@ubuntu-vm:~$ python
Python 2.7.3 (default, Sep 26 2013, 20:03:06)
[GCC 4.6.3] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> from hashlib import md5
>>> md5('123').hexdigest()
'202cb962ac59075b964b07152d234b70'
However, using the md5sum command in a shell yields a different value:
nathan@ubuntu-vm:~$ echo "123" | md5sum
ba1f2511fc30423bdbb183fe33f3dd0f  -
What gives?
The first person to spot the bug gets a star and is entitled to one day of bragging rights to the title "Ask Ubuntu Genius".
The pipe?
Good guess, but no. It's not the pipe.
01:51
ascii versus punicode representation of 123?
Nope. Another good guess but they are both being fed the correct ASCII characters.
it's just a stab. i haven't played with it at all.
(Well, almost... that's a hint :) )
If anyone needs a hint, I can give one.
Oh echo... Line break
2
yup
printf 123 | md5sum
202cb962ac59075b964b07152d234b70  -
01:56
sounds legit
@Braiam Okay...it finished
@Mateo: You win!
Good catch.
The correct line should read:
echo -n "123" | md5sum
Y U wondering it didn't work?
@JourneymanGeek you really only NEED pins 1236 right ;)
I hereby bestow the title "Ask Ubuntu Genius" on @Mateo for the duration of 24 hours.

@NathanOsman - best methodology for bulk import to django ORM? fixtures or something else?
Are we talking importing existing data from another Django instance?
Or importing data from a database that has nothing to do with Django?
Just a massive load of raw data. CSV, json, whatever...
back
@RPiAwesomeness
02:06
@NathanOsman i'm thinking of manipulating the data in to a fixture so imports are fast... since the import is painfully slow now, and i suspect it is because of repeatedly instantiating the model object.
I've only done importing of data I've exported from another Django instance.
@Braiam It completed...what now?
:/ test cases it is then...
Personally, I doubt fixtures would make a huge difference, but it might be worth a try.
@RPiAwesomeness try again?
02:06
@RPiAwesomeness What step are we at now?
Did that. Same error as before :P
@Seth Presumeably installing the driver, but it's still giving me an error:
DKMS: add completed.
Error! echo
Your kernel headers for kernel 3.10.18-1-ARCH+ cannot be found at
/usr/lib/modules/3.10.18-1-ARCH+/build or /usr/lib/modules/3.10.18-1-ARCH+/source.
error: command failed to execute correctly
and modprobe 8192cu returns nothing
What does ifconfig return?
are you trying to build arch the dist or is it not finding an environment variable for architecture?
@hbdgaf I am trying to install via pacman -Sy
@Seth This is connected on Ethernet:

@RPiAwesomeness Is that the output of the entire command?
02:10
Yes
ifconfig
@Seth he's telling pkexec to start as new user (problem is that when you specify none it start as root), I gave a more acceptable answer
Might give up on this for tonight and try again tomorrow...It's almost 9:20 here...
@RPiAwesomeness Then we need to get you the kernel headers.. I just don't know what package it is ;)
@RPiAwesomeness ls /usr/lib/modules/*/build?
02:12
I think that was what Braiam was trying to do.
Documentation Module.symvers crypto include lib samples sound
Kconfig arch drivers init mm scripts usr
Makefile block fs kernel net security virt
arg! install linux-headers-kirkwood!
Was that an arg! of I'm stupid, or an arg! of this is annoying or an arg! for programming? :D
Great install that!
@Braiam but old though.
@Seth You missed the puzzle :)
erm...target not found :P
02:15
@RPiAwesomeness arg! stupid arch...
pacman -Sy linux-headers-kirkwood
Ubuntu!
@NathanOsman Oh, yes I did!
what's the output of uname -r?
Ubuntu be much better. However, Arch is more computer geekish :D
3.10.18-1-ARCH+
linux headers brings up something...reinstall I think
@RPiAwesomeness pacman -Qi linux-headers
02:19
error: package linux-headers not found
....
precisely
Oh boy.
Is there an apt-cache search alternative in pacman?
@hbdgaf actually, up to fast ethernet, apparently yes.
pacman -S linux-raspberrypi-headers-3.10.18-1
02:21
What I don't get is why someone would bundle that cable (which, misleadingly, is labelled cat 5e)
error: target not found: linux-raspberrypi-headers-3.10.18-1
BOTHERATION!
freak!!!
@strugee @RPiAwesomeness is running into this error:
DKMS: add completed.
Error! echo
Your kernel headers for kernel 3.10.18-1-ARCH+ cannot be found at
/usr/lib/modules/3.10.18-1-ARCH+/build or /usr/lib/modules/3.10.18-1-ARCH+/source.
error: command failed to execute correctly
Does strugee know Arch?
02:23
@Seth pacman -Ss foobar
packman -Qs linux header
When trying to install his wireless card driver per this answer: raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/a/12947/7581
@strugee We can't figure out what package the kernel headers are...
Well...using -Ss didn't return an error...
@Braiam the -Q flag is for the local package db; it won't return results from the online repos
local/linux-api-headers 3.10.6-1
Kernel headers sanitized for use in userspace
local/linux-raspberrypi-latest-headers 3.12.6-1
Header files and scripts for building modules for linux kernel - Raspberry Pi
02:24
he needs 3.10.18-1-ARCH+ kernel headers...
Something new :D
@strugee You good at Arch?
we found the reason... headers are ahead kernel... so, how to sync?
@RPiAwesomeness yes.
to search use pacman -Ss foobar, or just search online: archlinux.org/packages/core/x86_64/linux-api-headers
That's because of this: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/13172634#13172634 I was told to use the latest one
to sync, do pacman -Syu. but before you do that, you should read the fine news
02:26
Fine news?
you may want to install pacmatic, which is a nice wrapper that will do that for you: pacman -S pacmatic
look it up on the arch wiki
Okay. Installed, now what?
use pacmatic instead of pacman. so: pacmatic -Syu will upgrade your system
02:29
he should restart to use the new kernel, no?

are you using archlinux.fr? that's a terrible idea
@strugee I have NO clue.
@strugee This is on a Raspi, as you might have guessed..
I'm using the Arch for ARM from the RPi foundation
> linux-api-headers-3.12.4-1
linux-raspberrypi-3.10.25-2
doesn't anyone notice the problem?
@RPiAwesomeness with no modifications? run cat /etc/pacman.conf
02:31
grr...
I notice it. Mucho differenco
@strugee Nope. None that I know of

Should I go ahead with the upgrade/update? -Syu?
oh, that isn't running? yeah
No, had to kill it to run those other commands
yeah run it
02:34
This will take a long time
you should install byobu :P
@RPiAwesomeness open a new ssh session FTW?
I have ~80Kb/s speed. Terrible
watch the messages as it upgrades, they're helpful. when using Arch reading upgrade messages is expected
@Braiam :) Heh, not again. My forehead looks like the core of the sun already.
@strugee Nothing yet...
02:35
you can use pacman -Syuw to only download. then come back to perform the upgrade later.
just don't install anything before you upgrade
I'm just using -Syu
upgrading the package db is dangerous if you don't also upgrade the packages
@strugee Is byobu in the arch repos?
@Braiam Got it.
Done
Ever had your dad shove a pot of un-cooked saur-brauten in your face saying "Smell!"?
02:40
@Seth I don't think so. I'm pretty sure it's in the AUR
but screen is
Most interesting
wait, I'm almost sure that screen -> byobu
And...still updating :P
byobu is a thin screen wrapper
@Braiam Yes
02:40
screen as in GNU Screen?
Yes
@Seth jinx
> screen-profiles (1.0-0ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low
02:41
@strugee And AUR means?
Blech. This is very annoying
@strugee :P
> Renaming project screen-profiles to byobu
@Seth Arch User Repositories. it's a tiny bit like PPAs although there are a lot of differences. e.g. AUR packages are built from source
Well, this has been an evening wasted...sorta. Bother Arch and its confusicating ways
02:42
@strugee Ah ok.
@strugee No offense to you
@RPiAwesomeness yeah, honestly, if you don't already know Arch I'd go for Debian
Or Ubuntu eh? :P
Well, it never hurts to learn something new! :D
@Seth nope. I'm unbelievably angry with Canonical, sorry!
02:43
true dat
@Seth Would! But Ubuntu-ARM only supports ARMv7+, RPi is ARMv6
@strugee Why?
@strugee Okey then.. shrug
@RPiAwesomeness Yeah I know :-/
Weell...It's about ~50% done...
@RPiAwesomeness I feel like they don't give back to the community enough. Upstart annoys me. and Mir is just unbelievable.
Oh goodness. Big packages
IAh see
02:44
I feel bad for saying that in an AU room, but...
@strugee no worry about it.
Everyone has their own opinions.
I dislike Unity, but I wouldn't recommend something else based solely on that. I'd just recommend something like Ubuntu GNOME. my problems with Ubuntu are mostly ethical :)
I has to goes for now. If it ever finishes I will ping you @strugee and probably @Seth and @Braiam...
/afk
alright, I have to do homework anyway
College?
And he's gone
/afk
02:47
alright guys.
@RPiAwesomeness 10th grade
now I'm gone for real :)
anyone know if the new humble bundle games work on linux - humblebundle.com I don't see the compatibility icons on the latest one
oh the video says it looks like they all will run on linux!
@vasa1 Added my own 2 cents :)
02:56
@strugee Well, it is finishing up now and cool! I'm just a grade below you!
@RPiAwesomeness Hehe, my bad...
@syb0rg That's fine
Have you guys gotten anywhere?
It didn't look like it from what I was reading.
I'm not sure.
I don't think we did.
Turns out selecting that other option through off something:
linux-api-headers-3.12.4-1
linux-raspberrypi-3.10.25-2
02:57
user image
3
difference between headers and actual kernel
@RPiAwesomeness So, can you install the driver again?
OH NO!! GIFS! RUN AWAY!!!
@Seth It's installing those upgrade updates
@Seth I think he already tried that to no avail.
Oh right. So we're still installing updates then.
@syb0rg Yeah, he needs the kernel headers.. and we haven't been able to figure out how to get those.
02:59
@NathanOsman Dude...what is that?
RC bumblebee?
It's a street actor
@RPiAwesomeness Found something of interest
No idea, but it would make a ridiculous halloween costume.
Lol, it would :D
