Q: Contact Users seen on AskUbuntu

Devyn Collier JohnsonThis question was asked in 2010 (Is there a way to directly contact a user?), but I am hoping that the answer has changed. I am wanting to find some way to contact AskUbuntu users. Some users include an email address on their profile page, but some users do not. These are the users that I cannot ...

@hexafraction Did you get my message in the MSO Tavern

2:14 AM
Oops. Forgot the question mark.
@Lucio After Discourse stopped working because of an old chromium. People got things moving after that. They were also waiting for some team to catch up.. I forget which one.
@hexafraction There was a bug report on that...

Q: How do I restrict my kids' computing time?

TakkatAccess to our computer (not only to the internet) needs to be restricted for the accounts of my kids (7, 8) until they are old enough to manage this by themselves. Until then we need to be able to define the following: the hours of the day when computing is o.k. (e.g. 5 - 9 pm) the days of the ...

Q: Parental controls with different settings for different users

Hamish DownerDoes anyone know of a good way to set up some sort of parental controls so that one user account is subject to them, but not another? Q: Is it true that Canonical shares some user's information with Amazon without asking for permission to Ubuntu's user?

Oscar Contreras AvilaI heard Richard Stallman saying it... He says Ubuntu violates the privacy of the user by giving information to Amazon without permission.

@WillKop I'm not sure I understand the question...

user interface changes for people who can't read
i have a bunch of old laptops, this happened by accident, i peeled off the eff stickers and gave it to my daughter

Ah..

3:56 AM
it was awesome!
screen time is already limited
internet can be filtered
this kids can't read
they can navigate an ipad. but that is too portable and they get hooked
and expensive if dropped

How do I get "make" without Internet on a new Ubuntu Server installation?

5 hours later…
9:45 AM
anyone here?
@Jonas download the debs and transfer on server and install?

1 hour later…
11:15 AM
@Mahesh what debs do I need?
I guess there are other build tools I would need for compiling drivers after a new installation

erm, make and its dependencies that you don't have.
try this hack.

I probably need gcc and such tools to

you need the entire development toolchain?

I think so

I have a dirty idea.

11:18 AM
@Jonas That didn't work for you?

do you have another ubuntu machine?

need to compile a driver..
@Mitch the driver you linked to need to be compiled, it´s just source code
no, no other ubuntu machine

I did it without Internet access per the readme.txt included in the archive.

he needs the dev toolchain.
gnu make, gcc, and stuff.
was this server ever apt-get updated?

@Mahesh Can you please take a look at the answer, and the link?

A: No network interfaces detected when installing Ubuntu Server on Mac Mini

MitchI have been trying to install Ubuntu on my Mac Mini, and been having all sorts of problems, one of which is Network. So here is what I did. I updated the firmware Then I installed Ubuntu without network, and when the installation was done, I downloaded and installed the driver, and it all work...

11:22 AM
oh. crap.
okay. try this.
apt-get install synaptic --print-uris
does that give any links?
or does it say you need to run update?
I presume yours is 12.04?
I have a 12.04 machine in the cloud that can prolly help.

@Mitch I only find instructions for installing from RPM package or building from source in that archive....? so I´m going "build from source"-way and need make and other build tools?

@Mitch are you on raring?
here is a workaround.

@Jonas inside the archived file there is a file called tg3-3.129d.tar.gz file. Inside that you will find the readme on how to get it. Look at what I've added in my answer.

If you have the debs for the stuff you need, the problem is solved.

@Mahesh yes on raring

11:27 AM
@Mitch you have the toolchain installed?

@Mahesh No, fresh install
brb

great!
do a apt-get install make --print-uris and give the output to jonas.
he can download those debs from any machine he has access to.
copy them over somehow onto the mac,
and run dpkg -i *.deb in that folder.
he will get the toolchain installed, and can happily compile the drivers.
but mitch's answer says that make is already present in that tar file.
@Jonas

@Mitch I look at the same folder, but there is no Make or GCC binaries in the archive... only C source files and a Makefile
@Mahesh no, I can´t find Make or the build toolchain in the tar file, only source files

okay. wait for mitch to return. he will either show you where the make and gcc are, or he can provide you the urls of the debs youneed to install.
either way, you will have whatever you need to compile that driver.

but a apt-get install make --print-uris would not be enough, since it doesn´t include gcc, and who knows if I need other tools?
is the build chain tools included in the installation media?

11:39 AM
@Jonas I know that, but jut do as I added in the answer, and try :)
I'm going to add an image of what was done.

@Mitch when I typ make I only get a message "The progam ´make´ is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: sudo apt-get install make"
because I don´t have the build tool chain installed...
can I get it from the installation media in any way?

@Jonas I swear to god, I didn't install anything. Ran the server setup from ISO, and then downloaded the file, and ran it, and it worked :)

@Mitch good for you, but it doesn´t work for me :(

@Jonas Let me see if I can find a different file.

is the build tools an option when you install Ubuntu Server?

jrg
11:48 AM
@Seth fantastic.
@Jonas as i recall, no.

ok, :(

12:08 PM
I´m trying with a new fresh install and try to install build tools during installation

Q: Rsnapshot destination full - how to safely rerun?

TobyI ran my Rsnapshot backup today but my external drive became full half-way through the incremental backup (I have about 20 incremental backups now). @Jonas If you wanted to the package name is build-essential to pull in all the useful bits (even if it's not on the menu, I would hope it's on the disk so a quick respin gets it in there)

@Seth You've already told me a bout that proposal :-)
And yes, I'm back from a very long break, just to take another in a few days.
Refer to my starred post complaining about chlorinated water/

@CallmeV do you know in what section "build-essential" is, when selecting manual packages?

@Jonas devel

12:21 PM
^that.

@Jonas I will upload a .deb file for you to try in a minute, and I'll give you the link

@Mitch It's a giant metapackage.
You'd be better off grabbing as many dependencies as you find necessary, and work from the leaves of the dependency tree, not the root.

@hexafraction found it, thanks! but how do I "add" it? if I press enter I get five RED "depends": dpkg, g++, gcc, libc6-dec and make

they don't have g++ on the server install media? that's odd...

its the .rpm file included in the drive archive converted to .deb. will that work?\

12:26 PM
@CallmeV I can find g++ in the same directory... but how do I add the packages that I want to install?

last time i chose things to install it was space bar to toggle the selected package and it resolved the dependencies for me

@Jonas Give This a try.

@CallmeV I can´t see the beginning of each line, it seems, so I can´t see what I have selected :(

@Jonas I need to leave for a while, but I'll be back in a couple of hours. Let me know. Thanks :)

ok

1:29 PM
@CallmeV I think + was the right key to hit, for selecting a package... I´ll give it a try now!

2:11 PM
Now I get compilation errors, updated my question with details:

Q: No network interfaces detected when installing Ubuntu Server on Mac Mini

JonasI have a new Mac Mini (MacMini6,1 late 2012) that I would like to install Ubuntu Server 13.04 (ubuntu-13.04-server-amd64+mac.iso) on. But it seems like Ubuntu Server isn't able to detect my network interface, because I get the message: No network interfaces detected How can I fix this issue...

As suggested in askubuntu.com/a/267939/4692 , can I download linux-firmware-nonfree from any place on internet and put it on an usb-stick? from where can I find it?

@hexafraction that was an answer from her on the same question

@hexafraction I can tell :)

Yes ,the gravatar and the fact that my dynamic IP is more or less static.

4:32 PM
I can see your previous username.

now tell me if it is javascript or just java?

Then again, I'm going to be away again this week for a few days, and not in a 3G-enabled area.
@jokerdino I answered both, I'm assuming the former

hey? any Php Programmers in here? :)
I'm in need of some help

I used to be one.
What's up?

@NathanOsman I need to generate random usernames and passwords for users
The usernames are generated from their names and passwords from numbers

So basically you want to take their real name and generate a username using a certain set of "allowed" characters from the name?

is that not easier? :-P
or this is easlily alterd:

function random_password($len = 7, $mixed_case = false)
{
$a = "abcdefghjkmnpqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHJKMNPQRSTUVWXYZ23456789";
if(!$mixed_case) $a = strtolower($a)
$out = "";
for($i = 0; $i < $len; $i++)
$out .= $a[rand(0, strlen($a))];
return $out;
}
(creates a random password; change the $a to the user name and volia >:) )

6:43 PM
@NathanOsman yes
@Rinzwind thanks
@NathanOsman I hadn't even thought of that

I would suggest not to mangle the name. It is too obvious and if the name is short....
plus it probably annoys the users since they need to remember a login they them self did not get to choose.

@mojo706 That would be easy to implement using a regular expression.

@Rinzwind It wasn't my suggestion its part of a project

for the user name you should use NAME+ID
like : artuer1324

@mojo706 aha :)

6:51 PM
@NathanOsman how

@Lucio I agree. Or at least suggest it.

@Lucio great suggestion
Now I am going to code the script I'll put it on Paste bin for you to see

you will get "feedback" if you mess up >:D
LOL

Use that to eliminate the characters you don't want.

@Rinzwind Your answer is great, but that is a duplicated question :)

7:02 PM
@Lucio grrr >:)

anyway I upvoted it
I mention this because the post should be merged

deleted it >:)

@Rinzwind NO!

fine
undeleted it :-P

Your answer is absolutely valid, if the question is merged, your answer should be moved to the duplicated

7:03 PM

tsk ??
I don't speack Russian yet..

@Lucio since when is tsk russian? >:D tsk :=)

jk
But I don't know what does it mean :P

lol
even wikipedia knows it >:D

@Rinzwind Him knows everything
Oh, TSL= The Turkish Armed Forces, (Turkish: Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri)

7:12 PM
@NathanOsman very complicated

@mojo706 you can not say that PHP is complicated dude

@Lucio the method @NathanOsman suggested is complicated and yes sometimes PHP can be daunting

Don't worry, I'm just saying :)

@mojo706 naaa... I rarely use PHP myself but I found it rather easy to use. At work we mainly use JS and perl :D Perl is annoying ;-)

Not really. Let's suppose you want to only allow usernames with letters:
$pwd = "Bob Smith";
$pwd = preg_replace('/[!A-Za-z]/', '', $pwd);
It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it.

7:18 PM
@NathanOsman now with that example its easier. Plus I was reading through the whole page and I only just understood the example :).
@Rinzwind I've never tried Perl probably never will now

Okay, is a mod around?
@jrg ?

Personally, I would tend to steer people away from PHP.

@Seth I did indeed follow it, but unfortunately not actively.

OK, well hopefully I'll see you there!

Yes.
I'll be away for a few days next week as well, but I'm atl east off from the repetitive motion injuries thart are called swimming,

Well it's nice to see you :)
It's been pretty quiet this summer..

Ah.
I'm not going to be much fun; I have RSIs in my left shoulder, so half my chat is grumpy complaining.

I'm sorry to hear that :(
I guess that would be from the swimming?

Why else?

I'm just happy I haven't drowned yet.

Indeed.

Sorry, I wasn't sure what else to say..
