Q: Understanding how Synaptic handles local, testing and repos

How is this not Debian specific?

Another AU user registered with chat user #53K

Hi folks, any suggestions on how I can make this question better? askubuntu.com/questions/301691/…

@Private Release of Ubuntu?

13.04

Nah, retag.
Chat user #55K from AU again...

8:10 AM
@AryoAdhi don't use tag 13.04 when the question is not specific to a single release only.

That's what I thought. The question also holds for other releases.

@Private: the question feels alright to me but "speed" questions usually dont get really satisfying answers (likely because an answer is not so easy to find).

@Private Maybe insert one line for releases used?

@AryoAdhi you mean the releases of avahi etc?
@Takkat I did find out that an ftp connection gives better results...

Avahi + speed == 1/0

8:15 AM
@Takkat I just feel that I know to little about network connections to post something about it...

<-- not into networking too
Hope it works then I'll leave it as is.

Somebody suggested in the ubuntu forum (older thread; not mine), that mounting the NAS via fstab had better results... why would that be, though?

no idea, sorry.

don't worry. thanks anyway

askubuntu.com/q/301923/10698 can you give me some help here guys.. He's trying to follow a 4 year old guide with a year old SO question on how to downgrade his Java install.

@Alvar my application wont run but I wont tell you why or what app it is shrug not much to help then, I guess.

@Takkat well he told me
@Takkat in a link to a 4 year old tutorial
that was linked via a year old SO question on the topic

still, the issue they have it entirely unclear from the question.

well the issue is that he's tries to follow an old tutorial with an old fix that doesn't work anymore.
I've told him to find a new tutorial but he ignores my post and jsut asks again -.-
can we close the post?

8:42 AM
...they may want to upgrade the app, won't they?
@Alvar its "answered" now - so we can move on ;)

@Takkat I just want him to get that you can't follow a tutorial form four years ago..
it even says in the tuttorial that it's old and might not work! !!!

@Alvar yeah you told them - that's fine IMO

:P

Some old tutorials are still valid however. We never know until we find out.

well this one isn't..
for the moment at least..

8:47 AM
we found this out ;)

I just want the user to get it..

@Alvar edit your answer with something in the line of "dont follow rusted tutorials".

hehe yeah that might help..

@Alvar good BAM but the system does not allow me to upvote again ;)

@Takkat hehe :)

nohup vs screen, which is better for processes that you want to run constantly on server even after ssh logout? Which does the mysqld server, for example, use?

Q: nohup vs. Screen

nedblorfIn the past, I've used nohup to run big background jobs, but I've noticed that a lot of people use Screen in this context. Does Screen provide some kind of functional advantage that I am unaware of, or is it just a matter of preference?

Literally the first result on Google for me.

yes it is, I just saw an answer to my question. I thought to use nohup but they recommended screen. I guess screen is a better choice.

Q: What are the right settings for Ubuntu Touch under qemu?

user2384250As you can see here, Canonical is releasing the images for Ubuntu touch, the problem is that apparently those are snapshots from a complete installation, there is no installer here and no vmlinuz + initrd. Also in qemu-system-arm -M help there is no platform that can fit one of the 4 that are of...
