@Lucio: Yup, I tried Android Studio the week before last - if you search the transcript, there should be some screenshots I posted.

Hey everyone, i'm not sure we shoul encourage answering with xkcd comics... it dosnt add anything new to the answers and is making fun of the user askubuntu.com/a/300894/47291

lol
@mateo_salta: there's ONE situation where that was apt, but someone got offended :/
but thats an edited comic for more annoyingness.

yeah, funny. But he has enough rep for chat... and someone allready linked the comic in a comment.

oh, I agree it dosen't belong there
question is, to me is is it not an answer?
commented as such

2:06 AM
Technically... it is the same answer without citation to source and without linking or attributing to xkcd
Since xkcd is cc wth attribution xkcd.com/license.html

@mateo_salta: and its not an answer ;p

Ok, i'll flag it again, it needs more flags anyway

@NathanOsman is there a way with android studio to do usb passthrough (so for example i want to run an app that accesses a vm through adb from a second device i connect to the hardware running the vm)? <-- should probably be asked on android enthusiasts

@CallmeV Whoa... I'm having trouble understanding your question :)
Does anyone here have experience with ASUS monitors?

@NathanOsman I have a nexus 7 running adb. I want to connect to a computer with a usb cable. That computer will be running an android VM. I want adb on the nexus to see the virtual device.
@NathanOsman asus products in general, but not specifically their monitors.

@CallmeV Okay, now I understand.
@CallmeV I was just wondering if their products would compare to, say, Samsung.
I'm looking at an ASUS monitor, but I don't want to end up with a really crumby product.

their gaming laptops are epic. i'm guessing their monitors are similar in quality (also, they make the nexus 7, which is pretty nice on visuals).

@CallmeV I think you're going to need help from the kernel to get that working.

2:49 AM
okay. i know you can blacklist a usb device in modprobe and have qemu explicitly grab it, but i didn't know if the "studio" had an easy-button for it
master slave issues might need kernel help if they exist

I would suggest VirtualBox - I find it much easier to do "USB pass-thru" with VirtualBox (in fact, I haven't even attempted it in qemu).

Yes, but do you get loads of "versions" of android in vbox? If you have a link it would be awesome. If you don't but you're sure it exists that would be awesome too.

To an x86 build of Android for VBox?
Let me see if I can dig one up...
I think I have an image on this flash drive here...

Oh I know an x86 android image exists. I was more wondering if you were aware of versioning coverage (say 1.6 to 4.0)

Are you looking for a range of versions or one particular version?

2:54 AM
I'm looking for maximum width

The Android SDK provides x86 images for each x86 Android release available.
You might be able to load those into VirtualBox.
In fact, I might try that :P

thanks. that's just what i needed to hear. i can convert qemu images to vbox images

Great. I'll see if I can find where the SDK puts the images.
$SDK/system-images/android-17/x86/system.img
...looks like it might be the right one.
Let me fire up VBox and see if it will work.

resists an innate need to post a rick flair woo image

I can't seem to load any of the files into VBox :(

2:59 AM
Why do we even have the low quality flag?

@NathanOsman it's fine. i'll do some testing and post the results somewhere and ping you about it. i think it's a great testing platform for things that would be worth getting working.

I'm curious now.

@mateo_salta because people that make me angry can argue on-topic-ness of low quality questions

@CallmeV: Making progress:
VBoxManage convertfromraw -format VDI system.img system.vdi

next is peripheral support... which would be where it would die if it's going to

3:01 AM
Or not:

:(

That must not be a bootable image. But there are others in the folder.

i'll look in to it. i'm coming up on three days off

Here is what I see (and the .vdi image is the one I just created).
ramdisk.img looks interesting...
Maybe that one's bootable.

possible. the issue is the boot process and chain mounting i think. it could be resolved with naming convention finagling.

3:06 AM
@CallmeV yeah the one time I fonud a use for it on a answer it gets disputed

they could css replace it with "I'm too lazy to edit this, but someone else will like it"

Aha! it appears kernel-qemu is the bootable "image".

yes, but that's like saying i found /boot. getting the kernel to accept the /dev/notmmsomething is the next challenge that is easily solvable. finally you get to peripherals, which could fall over.

I just discovered a problem with my Microsoft Wedge Bluetooth keyboard.
It has no right control key.
...which for VirtualBox, is a problem.

you can remap that

3:11 AM
Thankfully.
^--- We're making progress.
I guess I need another image with Grub on it.
At this point, I think I will take a break.
I could spend the rest of the evening hacking this together, but I have important things to do.
@CallmeV: Feel free to take it from here.

3:32 AM
@NathanOsman i'll give it a look on the days off. on the asus monitor, i wouldn't hesitate. asus makes good stuff

I just checked Best Buy and they're offering a Samsung 23.6" LED monitor on sale for $159.

the walmart where i work has lots of TVs hdmi capable going on clearance. i'll accept that they're not identical for a 50% price cut

4:09 AM
hi!
anyone there?
Am I the only one online here?
...
thinking to ask what
Ok, so I'm online here using my modem
unfortunately, it's not automatically connected
so I using modprobe and wvdial to connected
I want to install apps from Ubuntu Software Center
but the Install button is not available
What should I do?

apt-get?
you can run apt-cache policy program name to check if its available

@JohnMerlino Exactly, but it's too complicated
I just wanna install via Software Center

Oh yeah, any package downloader for Windows?
And downloading its dependencies automatically?

4:25 AM
apt-get does install all dependencies automatically

I know
But sometimes I changed to Windows
And back to Ubuntu

Oh I would just remove Windows, that should eliminate the troubles

lol :D
Did I say which modem I use?
I forget...
Oh yeah, it's CDMA modem

5:02 AM
@AryoAdhi: closest think I can think of is chocolatrey
tho for an initial install ninite is probably easier

<-- wonders who told people that purging and reinstalling pulseaudio will resolve sound issues

yo @takkat :=)
question: is this an acceptable answer: askubuntu.com/a/300894/15811

Hi @Rinzwind :)

mind you: there is an already accepted answer and this feels to me like an answer solely to post the image.

@Rinzwind I don't mind some humor, but its not really something new.
Self answered question rule!

ah well. bbl >:D (need to do some stuff before friday (when my holiday starts))

Noooooooo all people are on holidays (but me)

7:43 AM
@Takkat: I find reloading it helped sometimes

reloading holidays?
Pulseaudio issues rarely if at all fix by reinstalling. Usually you had irreparably messed up your sound system after purging pulseaudio.

8:08 AM
@Takkat Well, there's the assumption that the origin of the error is that pulse is messing with the audio ... Whiiich tends to be the wrong assumption.

I know - audio messes with pulse ;P

A: Run same command again but as sudo

wim Answer: you enter sudo !! straight afterwards to repeat the previous command with escalated privileges. edit: Image found via reddit, and it's a parody of the original xkcd comic by Randall Munroe.

I flagged that as it is not an answer.

Q: Run same command again but as sudo

TrufaSometimes when I run a command I don't notice that I needed to run it as super user to have enough permission. Is there a way to run the same command again but as a super user?

@Rishee shoot
if it's your vsftpd question it seems like a good question

2:19 PM
@CallmeV why did you do that? i don't understand the need.

@jokerdino I moved the funny so it was in the duplicate answer unless you're going to delete the dupe. I just thought a) that's relevant and funny, b) if funny is the goal in addition to functional it should be in the original answer.
Revert the edit if you wish, but now you know why I did it.

@CallmeV wow, that works. I had actually left it alone after the user dug up my e-mail an was spaming me, It was like yikes i actually helped you by having you cite.
Still was something should have only been a comment, or in chat...

@CallmeV but the guy who added a comic is not getting the credit, you see.

Agreed, you see what I was doing though. And that's what's important

i would just leave it to however it was.

2:23 PM
@jokerdino I grasp that. revise it if you want. a comic is not a reason to get upvotes. that is what i was trying to fix.

what's wrong with a comic anyway?

nothing. but it doesn't make a newer answer more valid than a duplicate older answer.
i addressed that in my comment

and that's why it's not the top answer. i don't think there is any issue.

it's fine. i just wanted someone to check behind me on the "is this okay" thing. revert if it's not, otherwise let it be.

He started by posting just a comic that isthe same techincal answer, i posted a meta link
Personally, im offended by the word "noob" but I'll let others handle it from here.

2:33 PM
@jokerdino: it didn't answer the question, and it was designed to be a smartass. He then edited in an answer copied from the most upvoted answer
funny answers are fine if they arn't designed to hurt (and even then, there was an issue with someone posting the xkcd trackpoint comic cause someone felt it was NSFW - DESPITE it answering the question on SU)

guess we can keep our own opinions. i cw-ed it.

cool beans. there's a reason for what i do. i just don't think a technical answer should be downmarked relatively because there's a comic or that a comic should get free upgoats

neither of them actually happened.

fair point, but they could have. i was trying to stop it pre-emptively

@CallmeV: a great technical answer with humour tends to get upvoted
but you gotta walk the line
one of my most upvoted answers on SU was uninentionally humourous, BUT answered the question

2:41 PM
the gray area is why i asked peeps to check. so no hard feelings on editing and reverting. just saying. if it's black and white, i get bent. if it's gray, i just write it off.

i just didn't want the technical answer to eventually get overridden by a comic.

@CallmeV: the original answer was context free and mean
hell, if he used the vanilla xkcd comic, it would not have added anything to the answer

i don't think it was mean, but it was just technical and both barrels. which is how i tend to answer...

it was mean.
and totally missed the point

okay, please explain how this is mean: askubuntu.com/a/300833/5768 , I might just be missing it.

2:45 PM
the other answer before editing?

the accepted answer is AWESOME and covers the point entirely!

yes. when i said original i meant the original dupe answer
/thought

@CallmeV: OH, I see
so it DID answer the question

@mateo_salta if it was only a comic, i would have removed it. but not after the revision.
we aren't getting anywhere until I read more and flip the switch.

And that is why you don't tell people why you downvote.

2:48 PM
@JourneymanGeek they're the same answer. i edited the comic in to the original since it answered the question with the same data. it was removed, which doesn't really matter, but the point remains that i wanted to purgify a comic answer since a technically correct answer existed before...with the same data. and comics should not be rewarded with rep.

@CallmeV: that was less than obvious when I commented
@mateo_salta: I made it clear I didn't ;p
I have no clue why i commented twice tho ><

i'm not complaining, i'm just making my reasons known
@JourneymanGeek lag

lol, Its me being spazzy
been too distracted by my new toy

and my comment got deleted on the dupe answer. sounds a lot like a moderator sock-puppet

I'll be worse next week

2:51 PM
i deleted the comment because it was no longer relevant.

but it is

oh yep.

new comment to the flavour of "this is a dupe answer but with a comic"?

feel free to add it back
he is not going to get more rep from that answer. so, most of the argument with free upvote is gone.

2:53 PM
feel free to upboat it to get it onto the list without expansion: askubuntu.com/questions/300832/…

do i have an option to mark myself retroactively wrong?

no, but you can remember it for the next time i raise a query

yeah remind me.
i am going to ask another mod to relook into the comic answer. <zip>

3:11 PM
@NathanOsman nice update on gitdroid, that is cool that you can now open other files with the editor.

Q: remove/replace/purge evince

who caresI want to use my own document viewer (okular) and never want to see evince again. In Ubuntu 13.04 when I try 'dpkg -P evince' it says that ubuntu-desktop depends on it. Ubuntu, stop this silliness or ubuntu-desktop and/or Ubuntu go out the window as well.

Hmm. It has a good answer....

so I missed the whole controversy over the comic huh.

@Seth unfortunate for the answer
@Chan-HoSuh good
