And another reason to blacklist goo.gl links...
All fourteen of you who clicked that link, You are The reason they keep spamming!
32? Really people? Stop clicking on spam links.

@mateo_salta Are you talking about the number of people who viewed the spam post on AU? (That doesn't matter.) Or are you talking about the number of people who clicked the actual obuscated links they contain, based on the statistics offered by the link-shortening services? The same link spam that gets posted here on AU also often gets posted all over the Internet...
(Or are you talking about the number of people who clicked the link where we were the referrer? Some services offer that information. 32 for that would be bad, and suggests spammers are finding substantial value in spamming AU.)

Oh ad if you get the chance report the link to google as spam here is the stats goo.gl/#analytics/goo.gl/Xoxby/all_time

1:09 AM
@mateo_salta Thx. I've now done so.

its 47 now...

@mateo_salta From Ask Ubuntu?

on the up-side one of them could be locating the target to feed to shortened link crawling engines to blacklist domains

Yep.

(There was a third one, too, but when I flagged it, that was enough to delete it.)

1:13 AM
@EliahKagan if you highlight the slices of the pie chart askubuntu.com is in there

@mateo_salta Thx.

@mateo_salta do you think maybe some of it is browser pre-cache-ing?

So, your saying that askubuntu may be auto folowing links? Or wondering how google gets the data, and if google can do that, what use is no follow?

@mateo_salta rel=nofollow is for search engines; as far as I know it has nothing to do with browser pre-caching (when a browser downloads content from a page not yet loaded, in anticipation that it may be loaded, so that if it is loaded it will load faster).

Hm.... that sounds like a bad idea security wise.

@mateo_salta It doesn't render, it just pre-fetches html body. Not rendering JS or plug-in objects solves most issues

If that is the case, is there a way to flag a question without opening it?

@mateo_salta Probably not a security problem. It's extremely rare for a browser to have a security bug where specially crafted data causes arbitrary code execution (or anything) while the data are being downloaded. Most security threats, including cross-site scripting, happen when the data are displayed to the user or allow to perform dynamic client-side actions (like accessing cookies).
@mateo_salta You should only flag a post if you've seen its contents and know the flag you're raising is correct.

But it seems like it is providing view counts to spammers which gets them money...

@mateo_salta 6 spam flags deletes the post. 6 is small compared to the numbers you cited, and the amount of extra money for 6 viewers who flag has got to be very, very small.
Also, I'm not sure if it's good or bad when one bad guy gets money from another bad guy for something that never actually helped the other bad guy.

1:29 AM
@mateo_salta Google ad-bars are off-site includes, so they don't get pre-fetched for example. It's related to pre-fetch not mattering for well designed ad impressions. Believe me, pay by impression folks are fighting that fight harder than you can.

hm, interesting
Looks like the tally is now 56, accounting for %1 of their clicks...

1:52 AM
ok destroying the spam users is not helping
just did like 10 spams right now, going to ban them 24/7 for a couple of days... like 365

Q: Does destroying the spam account actually protects us?

Luis AlvaradoToday I deleted I don't know how many accounts, but noticed that there was one that kept appearing with the same IP. In all cases I did a clean and brutal destroy of the account (Bloody mess actually, account parts everywhere). But then I thought, if there is a way to protect the site (Ban the ac...

is this ontopic?

Sure. It looks good. From what you describe this was an Ubuntu-only supported feature. Right?

8:00 AM
yes probably but he is not very helpful :+)

So, I would just make it clear that this might only available in the kernels available from the repositories and not from kernel.org. +1

@maggotbrain yes ubuntu only. and probably even ONLY 12.10

You have a very eloquent way of saying one is SOL. ;-)

Yeah I was thinking that when I was adding in the text too >:D
but then again... why use a beta if you want something so specific :X
you are asking for it if you ask me

@AmithKK Well, it's very specialized software for this place. It is in the repositories, however.
If someone has the motivation to work with him on it, I guess that it might be useful, however localized the issue might be.
@Rinzwind very true.

8:09 AM
@Kizuka Junki yes it is from Elfen lied ;-)
Now THIS is a new one:
"ubantu 1203"

@AmithKK I added a few pointers for the OP, in the comments, to look at for support if that helps.

@jo
@JourneymanGeek, I posted question in portal too.

Q: Make file to detect if its Ububtu Linux OS

RRRI want to create a makefile that will compile my objects and name them according to the Linux OS (Suse\RedHat\Ubuntu). How can I detect if the OS is Ubuntu or not? can anyone please help me to write this code? Thanks!

I have a 7.04 ISO

I have all Ubuntu in CD that where released on CD >:D

@AmithKK That was my first ubuntu ... loved the brown

I started with suse in 2004 with 2 demands: easy installation, internet working. It failed horribly. I retried with Ubuntu 5.04 and that was the 1st Linux for me that worked.
never looked at other os's for private use :X
suse 04 had this "select package" setup that was so fkking confusing.

have to admit I have a fedora 17 VM ... but purely so I can test cross-distro issues with my developments.
... and yum is crap ... it breaks if you sneeze on it.

9:09 AM
wait
I was 6 years old that time

yeah we got clients using Fedora, CentOS, AIX and OpenServer. But we do not depend on the OS alot since our software needs an interpreter

hmm
Did I have the internet at that time?

throw Amith a stick and a hoop ... those were the days.

@fossfreedom O.o

9:12 AM
@Rinzwind: started with mandriva, with no clue, then suse 10.1 with a broken package manager, then kubuntu on and off

nope
I didnt play outside
I used to take stuff apart

@AmithKK I did that too. outside >:-D

Q: how is there a 3.1 gb filesystem WITHOUT hard drives in ubuntu live

EricI am running ubuntu live WITHOUT any hard drives installed in my pavillion and there is a 3.1 gb file system. it is not on the dvd-r that i put ubuntu live on. it also appear s that someone is manipulating the info and tweeking my live session. How is this possible?

Magic!

hello everyone. I downloaded 13.04 but it seems to be a Gnome only version or did i get anything wrong?

10:08 AM
@mojo706 ubuntu = unity.
gnome you need to download the ubuntu remix edition

@Rinzwind I know that so I downloaded the wrong thing?

wait ... q 1st: what did you expext?

"ubuntu gnome"

Unity off course\

@fossfreedom tsk oldbies use "remix" >:)
@mojo706 yeah well.. some ppl would aswser "kde" ;=D

10:10 AM
"remix" ... offtopic ;)

I want unity not Gnome by default

@Rinzwind answered that, for lulz

@JourneymanGeek :D good one

@mojo706 what did you download? ... use sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop for unity.

thing is... you can not get gnome from the ubuntu.iso (???)
that requres alot more installation post-install

10:12 AM
@Rinzwind What? Don't the LiveCD's implement the PFM protocol?

@JourneymanGeek you would assume anyone using a live would know it is a ramdisk....

@Rinzwind: this person obviously does not
I mean, he has a packard bell

rofl

thats one step below a dell

10:15 AM
nothign wrong with dell.... if you do not consider it a problem that our raid tens to have a failed hdd every 10 months or so
and our ibm is running for 8 years w/o a problem...

lol
for home systems? Thinkpads for laptops, DIY for anything else

my dell notebook died due to their stupid way of setting up the notebook.... I changed a hdd once and a screw got into the casing through a hole just large enough to have the screw enter...

if I bought a prebuilt system I'd have to throw out the mouse and keyboard anyway ;)

@JourneymanGeek nah.. acer all the way. I have one of the 1st notebooks that had 2 hdd bays. ssd+hdd ftw
sigh ....

@Rinzwind: I really prefer proper desktops tho

10:20 AM
I am never ever going to get me a desktop again. Notebooks can do all I need and are a lot more portable (desktop are portable too but you know...)

thanks for you help

That's the AU Customer Service for you @mojo706 :=D

@Rinzwind: can't do without em for anything serious. I have one hell of a loaded out desktop, and that massively increases what I do with it

:)

VMs for example

10:22 AM
seems I downloaded the Ubuntu Gnome remix

@JourneymanGeek I have vm's on my notebook. No problem at all :D
@fossfreedom HA HA I WIN! Remix >:D

@Rinzwind: eh, 16 gigs of ram. I was running 3-4 VMs with a gig of ram each with room to spare ;)

@JourneymanGeek I mainly use my own system for watching video's and coding... so not alot needed ;-)

lol indeed >:D

10:23 AM
oh, and my torrid love of mechanical keyboards ;p

I have a foldable keyboard just in case >:)
oh and i love my transformer prime <3

I got a black widow ultimate on my own desktop, have a newer BW on the shared desktop ;p
X220 for portable use, but its mainly a notetaking thing, might swap it for a tablet

+1'd the q just cuz of the pixs _O-

eh, the order of questions
but the one linking to the blog? classic case of why link only answers are stupid

No I meant the newest answer ;)
the one about "idea net setter".

10:40 AM
naw its just a bad one ;p

Anybody heard about the service "flattr" ? what is it - how does it work?

it's a internet payment thingy foss

so like a paypal donate button?

yes but a bit more specific
"Flattr is a social micropayment service that offers one-click payments from fans directly to content creators"
you can not use it to pay someone random like with paypal

yeah - read that ... still dont understand "directly to content creators" ... how does that work?

10:49 AM
you put real money into a flattr account and state what people should get what money on a montly base
(think of it as a pre paid phone).
then you go click the "flattr" button on sites you like
and at the end of the month flattr (pays your montly amount / flattrs you clicked ) to those pppl

that's a better analogy - think I understand. Trying to understand how flattr works with GitHub repositories.

Oh and they make money cuz the creator gets it 10 days later ;-)
